They're Back: The Return of the Maybelline Great Lash Colored Mascaras

Starting in the spring of 2011 and for every spring/summer since then, Maybelline has released a limited edition collection of colored mascaras in their Great Lash line. Every year, people seem to get very excited about these and, every year, many people seem to think this is the first time Maybelline has ever released colored mascaras. So I thought I'd set the record straight about this!

Here's a quick summary:
  • For Summer 2013 there are SIX shades in the collection: Teal Appeal, Green With Envy, I See Blue, Vision in Violet, So Very Berry and Wink of Pink

Here's what the Summer 2013 display looks like (with thanks to longtime reader Tara):

Wink of Pink and So Very Berry

As you can see, Maybelline seems to be adding new colors to the collection each year, and this year they've added a pink and a berry (Wink of Pink and So Very Berry). I can't confirm that the teal, blue, green and purple shades in this new collection are the same shades as in last year's collection (with different names) but Tara did offer some insights about these shades:
Tara writes:

So Very Berry - this looks like a cranberry red irl, really cool!
Wink of Pink - from the display and packaging, this looks like it's a super hot pink (maybe even borderline neon!)
Vision in Violet - looks a bit more vivid this year but I'll wait for reviews as last year's was pretty blah
I See Blue - super duper electric ultramarine 1980's blue!
Teal Appeal - looks similar to last year's teal shade which was really gorgeous, even though the formula was meh
Green With Envy - again, looks like last year's shade, maybe a touch more vivid
Tara mentioned in her description of Teal Appeal that the formula was "meh" last year. This is what I also heard back in 2011--I hope the feedback this year is better! If you have tried the 2013 versions, I would absolutely LOVE to hear from you. Do you think they're better than past years' versions? Can you see the color on your lashes when applied? Please do tell!

Thanks so much, Tara, for the great pics and info!

PS: I also want to give a special thanks to several of you for sending me pics of this display. Unfortunately, I am super behind on my "new product posts" and Tara sent the above pics to me a few weeks ago, so I was already working on this post when additional pics started to come through. I wish I could have shared ALL of your pics here and I really appreciate you taking the time to submit them to me.

  1. Thats what it is the formula is blah. I need VOLUME!!! LOL I just apply these on top of my every day mascaras.

  2. I don't really care for the great lash formula, but I really want the berry color for football games this fall!

  3. YES!!! That berry looks amazing!!!! It must come home with me!

  4. I'm not a fan of Great Lash (actually I hate the formula) so these will be a pass for me.

  5. I don't think the formula is great on these so I usually top of my usual mascara with the colour so I still get all the volume I want with a touch of colour. They also look so cool on the bottom lashes!

  6. I got the berry-colored one about two weeks ago now, and though the Great Lash formula doesn't do much for my lashes, the color is stunning on my light brown eyes! Mascaras always smudge on me (including waterproof formulas) but when this mascara smudges, it's very minimal and I think the berry color actually makes the smudges look more intentional and sultry instead of panda eye-ish! I also find that the berry color doesn't quite show up when layered over black mascara.
    Just my two cents! (:

  7. Those display pictures are just too good to be true... I have Royal Blue and the formula is really bad, and it takes longer time to dry than most mascaras. Still, I'm curious about the berry-colored one.

  8. The pink, violet and Teal Appeal was my favorite colors on paper !

  9. Interesting, I sorta want to try the blue one. vegas_nay on instagram posted a gorgeous eye look with a neutral eye with holo glitter on the lid and gorgeous blue mascara on her bottom lashes.

  10. I bought Vision in Violet and really regret the waste of money and I can't find my receipt to return it. 4 coats of the mascara and it still looked like I had no mascara on. Then I tried over a coat of black and couldn't see the Violet after 2 coats. Someone on your IG suggested over a white primer so I may try that...

  11. I got the purple one, I've tried some pretty good purple mascaras, but this one just looks black, even on my blonde lashes, so I won't use the rest of the tube, as it doesn't make my lashes look good, or purple.

  12. I just saw an ad in a magazine for these. I kind of want them all, except for the pink. I did that in high school in the late 1980s so I got it out of my system then. I only wish these formulas were a bit more volumizing so there'd be more impact.

  13. I love the colours but the formulation is terrible for me!!!! Also since I have dark lashes I can barley see any colour payoff and it burns my eyes which is a huge turn off for me!!!!

  14. I got the violet and it has ZERO color payoff. So sad!

  15. Looks fun! I think I'll search for Teal Appeal to use as a top coat.

  16. I've been on the hunt for an affordable berry/auburn/reddish mascara for a while now (since Max Factor's Auburn 2000 Calorie mascara hasn't been available for a while,) but I really dislike the Great Lash formula.

It might be worth it to do what others have suggested, and that's swiping it over the top of a better formula mascara, just for the color.

  17. If these are just color payoff, they're just what I'd want! I don't want length or volume because I usually wear glasses and my lashes will hit them. Not only does that leave streaks, but it's really uncomfortable. But I'd love a bit of color.

  18. OH how did I miss this?! Can't wait to try the teal, berry, and pink ones! Yay!

  19. I absolutely love the Great Lash formula. One of my all time favorites... can't wait to try these out (I would love the pink but I don't know that I could pull it off... my makeup is pretty conservative). Saw them at CVS a few weeks back. Walmart usually has the best price on Great Lash... has anyone spotted this there? (I hate going in there)

  20. The display doesn't look like that at every store. Just letting some of you know so you do n0t miss out. Im a fan of the pink and teal just love them the purple one isn't my all time fave. But when I use a white primer and let it dry before adding the purple and teal it really stands out. The pink doesn't need the primer help. My sister in law got the very berry one and she didn't really like it because she says it looks like brown. Although i might just go get it cus im a horder like that.

  21. Gaah...why must they make such beautiful colours in such a yucky, outdated formula?

  22. If you're gonna purchase one, get the teal one! I bought it a year or two ago (don't remember when exactly) and wore it during high school (which was bad on my part, I was obsessed with it). It really is noticeable! So many compliments from it (except one person who thought me wearing blue mascara with blue eyeliner was weird lol)! Just put it on the tips of your lashes, or on your bottom lash line for a pop of color. (:

  23. ugh, i WISH i could wear these! I am extremely allergic to Maybelline Great Lash as they contain shellac. my eyes swell up huge for days. :(

  24. I reviewed the purple pop. It sucked to say the least. The color didn't show and it caused them to clump and create v shaped spikes.

  25. I brought the teal one but I have not used it yet. I am hoping to use it with my Muse and Carouse Pop Art shadow.

  26. I had never owned Great Lash mascara before, but i knew i had to get some when i saw the colors available. i purchased Wink of Pink, Teal Appeal, Vision in Violet, and I See Blue. The pink one is EXCELLENT, very bright and shows up over regular black mascara. By far my favorite. The blue one is also very bright, even over black. Teal was cute, maybe it would look better over white primer, but it still showed up enough to be noticeable. Purple was extremely disappointing. Although I haven't tried it over primer, it showed up completely black. Clearly they haven't improved that one at all

  27. Also, they are not volumizing or lengthening in the slightest. I would recommend curling your lashes and using a primer before using this mascara. More than 2 coats ensures clumping. I'm going to go back for the Green With Envy. I was very interested in the berry color until a friend of mine used it, and it only looked brown to me (would not recommend).

  28. I love colored mascara, but Great Lash is the worst mascara I have ever used, so I will pass and get the ones by Hard Candy.
