The Wednesday Question

Do you disagree with any of the standard beauty "no-nos"?

Heck YES I do! For instance, I have heard for years that redheads shouldn't wear red lipstick. What?!?! I think redheads look absolutely stunning in red lipstick. I also have heard that you should rinse your hair with cold water after shampooing/conditioning and, while I understand the logic in this, I think that I have probably done this a total of 10 times over the course of my life. And I don't think I've suffered any real consequences after rinsing with warm water, so I give that "no-no" a big "WHATEVER." I hate being cold in the shower, so I'm just never going to comply.

  1. I feel that a cool water rinse makes my blond hair shine! I do followup with hot on the rest of me. However w beauty no no that I buy into is not matching makeup to outfit! I like do that

  2. Of course I disagree with blanket beauty "no nos". I wash my face with soap because I have yet to find any facial cleanser that doesn't feel like it's left a layer of grease on my face. (I use a mild goat's milk soap most of the time and my skin looks great.)

I have blue eyes and I wear blue eyeliner. And blue eye shadow. I hate browns, even though they're what are supposed to make blue eyes "pop". I find eggplants and plums work so much better for me, and I love purple.

I wear glitter cosmetics even though I'm well over 40. No, not everywhere all at once. The older you get, the more wearing glitter is like real estate: location, location, location. A little glitter or shimmer in the right spot perks up everything.

I wear horizontal stripes even though no one over 110 lbs is supposed to. When done right, they take pounds OFF, not on. No, not circus tent stripes - those look good on nobody.

  3. hmmm, A beauty no no that I don't agree with is when they say certain colors go with certain ages.. I say if you like it wear it! Right now can't think of any other but I'm sure I will come back with more later lol

  4. Thanks, G! I'm a redhead and I just wore Revlon Candy Apple lip butter today and I think it looked great on me (if I do say so myself). ;)

  5. I disagree with the "no bold lips with bold eyes," or vice versa rule. I think you can do a bold eye and lip look, so long as they complement each other.

  6. I disagree with the notion that it is passe to match lipstick to what you are wearing. I do this all the time and get compliments on it! I love a bright pink lip with a bright pink shirt (or red, or orange...)

  7. I think that rules are meant to be broken! Life is too short to be worrying about whether or not you *should* be wearing that glitter at the age of 33.

  8. I was always told, no red lipstick if you're pale. Heck no! I wear red lipstick, but make sure it's the right tone to compliment my skin.

Also a no to the cold water. I don't get it, I've tried it, I never see a difference.

Also a no for me is "if you have dyed your hair dark, seek a professional salon to get the dark dye out", another no-no for me. I was told, ages ago, that only a salon would be able to get the black dye that stained my hair out, and that my hair would 99.99% break and be damaged from the process. How about no to that, and let Mom try her hand at it. My Mom bleached my hair, twice, and removed all the black dye from it. Yes, I was platinum, but my hair never broke, nor fell out. It wasn't straw either, it was silky smooth with no tangles. So yes, a bleach out job can be done at home, without damage occurring :D

  9. I find the coolwater rinse theory to only make sense if you air dry, bc if you are going to heat style after, you're just opening that cuticle right back up. Which is why every time you blowdry to style it should be followed w/ a cool shot...not only to lock the set, but to close the cuticle for added shine. As far as fashion "rules" I disregard nail colours based on seasons, pastels aren't only nice in the spring they look great in the wintertime as well as neons. I do tend to only gravitate toward plums and berries in the autumn though. I don't pay much mind to those things, I wear what makes me feel comfortable and put together. I also try to choose cuts that flatter my pear-ish shape. One rule I totally always believed in (even before it was a rule) is that if you are going skimpy on top you should have more coverage on the bottom half, and vice versa...all about balance, and not looking like a hoochie-mama. ;)

  10. I disagree with so many of them! Redheads look fabulous in red lipstick, as do pale girls. I love to wear white after Labor Day. I'm currently wearing a dark wine nail polish in the middle of summer. There are many more. However, I hate dark pantyhose with light shoes. I hate pantyhose with open-toed shoes. I don't want to see anyone's bra straps; I don't understand why that became socially acceptable. It's underwear, keep it under. Just because it zips, doesn't mean it fits. Oh, I'm sorry, I just started ranting in both directions.

  11. I probably disregard a lot of them but only a couple come to mind at the moment. One, I always wear waterproof mascara. Washable doesn't hold a curl for me, plus I'm active and don't want my mascara smearing if I go for a walk during my break at work. I have blue eyes and once in a while *gasp* I wear blue eyeshadow.

  12. Rules? We don't need no stinkin' rules!

I've always just done what I want, and pretty much ignore any attempts to control me ;)

  13. I totally agree with everything you disagree with (if that makes sense)! Yes to red lipstick on everyone and who cares about cold water rinsing! I don’t listen a lot of beauty “rules” and am perfectly happy making my own rules. I think whatever works for the person is what you should follow. For me I can’t to heavy liner and bold lips, but I see other ladies all the time who rock it!

  14. I agree about disagreeing. Sometimes those "rules" are interesting for guidance or ideas, but ultimately you have to do what feels right for you. I keep going back to certain things that I've loved for more than 20 years because it calls to me on some deeper level. Remember how it used to be a that a woman shouldn't have long hair after a certain age or you shouldn't have blonde hair if you had brown eyes and now we see women breaking those rules and so many others and looking awesome because they're being true to themselves.

  15. Oh my! I'm right there with all the comments. My "no-no": I wear my blush blush wherever I want rather than where I "should", and I like it to show instead of doing the "naturally flushed" look. I do what I like with my makeup!

  16. I love doing a dramatic smokey eye using browns with a red lip in the winter time for an evening out. I find I can balance it out if I use the right colors. :)
