The Wednesday Question

How do you store your makeup brushes?

There are a zillion ways to store makeup brushes and I think I've tried them all (decorative vases filled with glass beads, brush rolls, tumblers, etc. etc.). But the one storage solution that seems to work the best for me personally is my little $5 desk organizer. When it gets dirty, it's easy to run under the sink with soap and water, and I just store it upside-down for a few hours to dry. I love that it rotates and I can pick the whole thing up and move it from room to room if I need to. It's not terribly pretty, but in this case I prefer function over aesthetics!

  2. I use vintage vases and milk glass compote dishes - they look beautiful and they're perfect for brushes. I also have one I use for lip glosses and lip balms.
They were all under 10 dollar finds (including shipping!) on etsy.

  3. for Christmas, my MIL gave me a craft caddy (similar to this, only smaller: http://content.vcommerce.com/products/766/149754766/fullsize.jpg?896008601)

i think she expected me to use it for my sewing, but i found it perfect for my makeup! im amazed how much i can fit in there, and since i can keep it on the counter, i actually USE more of my makeup than i did when it was all in drawers, put away. what little isn't kept in the caddy is still in the drawers, but i love that i can swap things out now + then. the side pockets are perfect for brushes, eyeliners, and other long, thin tubes. i have most of my lip products in the middle, and some of my compacts/powders in the pockets.
granted, i have much less makeup than you or many of your other readers, but i bet this method would work for a lot of gals -- just get a larger caddy or more of them!

added bonus: its pretty much all ready to travel!

    1. That is SOOOO awesome! I'm going to look for these! Where do you get them?

  4. I keep mine in a ceramic container, but I will be looking in Staples for one like yours, I like that can hold many things.

  5. I keep my brushes in glass containers (from slatkin 3-wick candles) that I then keep in BBW candle sleeves. I use the silver Basket Weave sleeve for my eye brushes and the silver Waves candle sleeve for my face brushes.

  6. Currently, I keep my daily products in the Ikea Godmorgon Box but it's kind of a pain to use since you have to lift up the front where pencils, brushes, and gloss are stored to get underneath where I have my powders because everything lifts up and shifts or falls out :-( I have been looking for a good brush roll and a different product organizer; I will have to check out these lazy susans

  7. I went the vase and glass beads route. I like it for the most part. I also recycled my Bath & Body candle jars, added some beads and use it for eyeliners and another without beads for lipglosses.

    1. I use the $1 Target pails, too! I think they're the perfect height & size for brushes; I also have one for my most used lip glosses.

  9. A little desk organizer I bought.. it looks like two cups stuck together. Eye brushes in one, face brushes in the other. Simple yet effective.

  10. i don't have too many brushes at the moment, so i just have all of my skinny things (liners, brushes, even a mascara) in a pencil holder and all of my palettes/powder/flat things in a small drawer organizer thing. I have a couple of other containers for smaller, standing up things and a little box for my lip products. :)

  11. Mine are in a red Solo cup! Super ghetto but it works! I am hoping to upgrade my whole makeup/vanity setup soon though!

    1. I had mine in a neon green Solo cup... it was the prrfect height! Haha.. I have my brushes in an elf 3 compartment brush holder but I have my everyday makeup in the staples organizer G has. I bought it for $5 when she did the blog about it.

  12. Well this post made me realize I need something for my brushes. I usually just leave them on the counter or in my make up bag.

  13. I have various tall mugs and tumblers in shades of aqua/robin's egg blue (aka my favorite nail polish color) that hold brushes by category. I got a couple of tall, skinny shot glasses from the $1 section at Target a while back, and these are great for holding pencil liners.

  14. I'm in desperate need of a way to organize and store my brushes. Your idea is ingenious! I'm sorry I missed it when you originally posted it.

  15. Since no jars or vases are safe from my cats my brushes live tucked away in a drawer right now :( I also travel quite a bit with mine so I tend to use the brush roll setup when I have to go somewhere.

  16. We think alike! I use the EXACT same organizer to stash my brushes. It's perfect. I just give it a spin to find what I need.

  17. I use my pampered chef tool turnabout - it's like a bigger version of your organizer G. When it wouldn't fit in my kitchen cabinets, I repurposed it for makeup and brushes!

    1. That sounds like exactly what I need.... G's looked to small to house my semi-large brush collection, and that turnabout could be perfect once I move and have a larger space for my bathroom! Thanks for the idea, Jill!

  18. Recently Michaels had (possibly still has?) some brightly colored flower pots that are perfect! I wish they were a bit smaller so that I could have one for face and one for eye brushes. I hot glued the hole at the bottom of the pot so nothing could get stuck in the (un-attatchable) tray on the bottom of both pots. I put all my clean ones in one flower pot, and the dirty ones go with some clear pot filler from the bridal section. I love the color it adds to my bathroom! Here's a picture I took of them the day I found them in Michaels in case anyone wants to go look for them! (I'd link to just the picture but instagram won't let me) : http://instagram.com/p/XxT6xgNSxG/

  19. If my husband ever met you he'd probably hug you - ever since I saw your idea with the 5 dollar organizer (I had to buy mine at full price!!) I decided to clear out the bathroom vanity - all my less used cosmetics are put away and all the daily stuff I use is in that organizer - now everything has a place and it actually cut down my prep time in the morning bc I can find everything so easily, and put things back so easily in their little compartments ... now the vanity is cleared off and looks great! I've been a makeup fanatic for the last 15 years and all the other things I've tried (caboodles, cute cups, plastic drawers, etc) never worked for me, and yet somehow your magical $5 ($9.99 for me) organizer works! It's been like 3 months now and it's still completely super organized!! My husband is amazed, lol. So seriously - thank you!! I can't believe how well this worked.

  20. You can always get a can of spray paint and make your organizer a more "girly" color. With tape or round stickers, you could even make a pattern on it!
