The Wednesday Question (Fantasy Edition)

If you could pick any existing beauty brand and give it a complete makeover (products, packaging, shade selection, etc.) which brand would it be, and what would you do to it?

  1. I don't think I'd give any brand an overhaul, but I would give stores overhauls in that they offer sampling stations so I could get a better idea of what a product looks like out of the tube, jar or pan. A few brands, however, I'd love if they offered unscented options, or at least more mildly scented versions: Milani lipsticks and Garnier skincare are two that come to mind.

  2. I have to say CoverGirl. I feel like the company is trying to promote their line through hiring fabulous celebrities and shows like America's Next Top Model, but the quality of most of their products are just not very good. Companies like Wet n Wild and even Maybelline are already improving their formulas, that CoverGirl gotta pick up the slack and begin working on improving theirs.
I'm not saying that all of their products are bad (their 3-in-1 foundation and Olay products are quire fabulous) but that's about it..

  3. NYC. I feel like it could be so much more than it is!

  4. My pick would be Spoiled. I love their color selection but I would change the color names and brushes.

  5. I think I would give Jordana a complete makeover. I think new packaging and product expansion (face products!) would help drugstore buyers realize how great of a line it is!

  6. I'm gonna have to copy your answer from the last time you posted this and agree- Almay. I was at Rite Aid yesterday to take advantage of the 40% off sale and the $5/2 item coupon, and it was a real struggle to find any products that I was even remotely interested in trying. I did try one of their mascaras once, and it made my eyelashes fall out. So yeah, Almay, you need some help!

  7. I agree with those who are naming lines like Jordana and NYC. I feel like, yes, they are on the inexpensive side but they certainly do not have to look like it! Revamping logos and packaging can give a product the air of luxury that reflects the *quality* of the products and not necessarily the price.

    1. Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadows: Some mutted/matte shades, I don't want Tenacious Teal or Painted Purple or Orange, why was Barely Beige just a limited edition?

Pianogirl I agree about Covergirl, I hardly look at their items anymore.

Almay & Phys Forumula always seemed boring to me.

L'oreal is somewhat boring also, except for their nail colors

Revlon needs to lower prices, after all these years of buying Revlon waterproof eyeliner, I discovered the Wet n Wild & Hard Candy Brands, I was a loyal customer Revlon & you lost me.

  8. CoverGirl lipsticks: get rid of that perfume smell/taste! Make eyeshadows and blush more pigmented new packaging.

Almay: New packaging, make it more modern.

Physician's Formula: Get rid of the useless applicators and bulky packaging, chop the price down a few bucks.

NYC: New, more up-to-date and exciting packaging.

  9. I would have to say LA Colors. It's extremely affordable, but it could definitely use a makeover with new and better quality. Jordana and N.Y.C. would be some other ones.

  10. Wet n Wild: I find the eye shadow and blush packages flimsy and hard to open.

  11. Definitely L'Oreal Paris. None of their products excite me, their packaging looks bulky and overdone and they are too expensive. The only thing I would keep is their True Match Mineral Makeup, my HG summer foundation.

  12. I would actually prefer retro makeovers...I am so nostalgic for the old packaging that I would want them to release at least a collection in the old 90's packaging. Would love to see the old school Wet n' Wild packaging, or a complete return to the old Clinique green compacts for everything. On that note, I would love to take todays Hard Candy and revert it into the brand it used to be. I still have some of my original Hard Candy nail polishes and I would love to have the old brand back!

    1. I love this idea! I'm also with the first poster in wishing stores would offer sample stations. I'm guessing drugstore brands make a lot of money off of us buying blind though, so this may not happen.

    2. I think that they have WAY more returns because of that. So, offering testers might actually save them money.

    3. My wish is similar in that I would LOVE to see Urban Decay go back to their original packaging and products. Runner up would be Too Faced, their packaging was sooooo cute!

  13. I would expand the Cover Girl Nature Luxe line, rather then discontinue it. In addition to the foundation, mascara, and gloss balm, I would add a cream blush, eyeliner, and highlighter. That line had such potential when it was first launched, it's a pity that it is being discontinued...

  14. Hmmm, maybe Almay or something - I totally overlook them every time. They need an update!

  15. Almay. The products are uninteresting and of poor quality.

  16. I would have to agree with those who are saying N.Y.C. The products might not be bad, but it looks that way with the cheap packaging. I always overlook their products. Another person mentioned Hard Candy and I kind of agree. I have nothing against the brand, they seem to have great products, but I just loved how cute the packaging for the eye shadows used to be. I actually bought one of my first eye shadows and lip glosses from them when they were sold in Sephora, so I wish they would bring back some of their old products and colors.

  17. I would love to redo black radiances packaging! So 80's...and I would also like more drugstore foundations to come with pumps!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Black Radiance - The typeface is too masculine. The black and gold is irritating to look at. The old nail polishes, and blushes need to come back. The packaging looks awful. I wold love to see Black Radiance do a feminine look.

Covergirl - the blushes need more pigment. For a drugstore brand alot of the products are made cheaply. The pressed powder still gets pills, the eyeshadows are under pigmented. No matte lipsticks or LE shades. The loose powder packaging has to go!

CG Queen - needs blushes. I'd make the color of the packaging pink, and leave the rose gold. The pressed powder doesn't have anything for my dark red-brown skin. There needs to be more 3kit and 4kit shadows

Posner and Zuri - these companies have a serious advantage of being old and yet they do nothing about it.

Iman Cosmetics - needs more variety in colors, textures, and finishes. Nail polish!

L'Oreal - isnt doing enough for darker women

    1. To be honest all of the brands targeted towards women of color would be sold internationally.

  19. Covergirl - like he reader stated above, they spend all their $ on celebrity endorsements rather than improvement in quality! In this current digital age, Internet word of mouth is much more powerful than advertising.. So c'mon, step your game up covergirl! Wet n wilds eyeshadows is so much more effective at upping your reputation than, say, taylor swift... I wouldn't be surprised if brands like Wet n wild and ELF made more sales than Covergirl.. They do have some great products like their lipsticks which are a total underdog (maybellines have a playdoh smell and Revlons are way overpriced!) and the 3-in-1 foundation which is my first ever full coverge foundation! I love it and I'm actually wearing it now..but other than that? STEP YO GAME UP.

other than that, I guess Almay could use a makeover.. T just needs to stop with the "coordinated for your eye color" and "adapts to your skintone" crap: this is 2013, we ain't falling for that shiz. Neutrogena... Great skincare brand, not so much on the makeup. Both needs to up their quality and repackage to target the younger crowds that make up the majority of drugstore makeup users

    1. Good points! I stopped buying Cover Girl ages ago, except for the odd eye shadow palette, though I really like the 3-in-1 foundation. I've had allergic reactions to Almay -- this was in the 1990s, mind you -- and I've avoided it like the plague ever since. Neutrogena, their makeup has never impressed me much either. Skin care is good, but the rest, meh.

  20. Bonne Bell. They have some good color products, but they have limited themselves to a very narrow market range. Their powders, bronzers, lipstick and glosses have good potential but it seems that the company is half hearted about that end of the line.

  21. Since we're having a fantasy...

I would outlaw fragrance and propylene glycol from all cosmetics. Polish would come in square bottles and all would be .5oz, no more of this .4, .33 and .25 crap at .5oz prices. No more foundation in tubes, only airless pump bottles. All foundations would have an spf of at least 15. All lipstick would have to retract all the way into the tube (looking at you, WnW!), and also have an spf. No more use of fake eyelashes to advertise mascara. (I feel like I am running for a political office, lol)

There are so many things I would change, most brands are guilty of at least one thing I don't like :P

    3. I like foundations in tubes as apposed to bottles with no pumps. It's easier to control. I know it's not the most hygienic, but anything that comes out, I don't let back in to try to minimize it. I also only use freshly washed hands and whatnot when opening it.

  22. I would change Milani packaging. One of the reasons I have never bothered trying out Milani products is that they look like makeup for old people from the early 90s.

    1. Their blushes break up for sure, and the lids break off. Milani has alot of bulk.

  23. I would change Covergirl's packaging. It's so boring it comes across to me as old fashioned...like makeup packaging from the mid 90's. I literally stopped buying their products because of it. Even my husband remarked their packaging looks "retro". I'm sure their current lines are great but I can't bring myself to risk the money on products that are packaged with such minimal effort.

As for what I'd do to make it better...I'm no designer but I'd think adding more color to the labels and more stylized or graphic fonts would do wonders for them.

  24. I agree with the Almay bunch here. I think they used to be better before they started 'bundling' for eye color. I know what looks good on me, but don't necessarily want to have to buy a whole palette for my blue eyes (when the selection for brown or hazel looks better).

  25. I am actually happy to see Drew Barrymore's line becoming more popular (too bad it's still not available every where). Since I feel like her line actually feels high end and looks it too. I don't feel bad paying money for her line at all because I know I am getting a quality product. I hope she does expand it so it doesn't get old and that other companies follow her lead.

    1. I think that's funny since her line is sitting in a Walmart right now fully stocked.
