Review: Naive Rose Facial Cleansing Foam by Kanebo

Purchased by Me

A top seller at Marukai (which is where I purchased this tube) and arguably a top seller at most Japanese markets, Naive Rose Facial Cleansing Foam by Kracie (a division of Kanebo) is an extremely popular drugstore-level facial cleanser in both Japan and the US.

If you don't have a Japanese market in your area (for my fellow San Diego peeps, this product is sold at just about every single Japanese market in SD  including Marukai Living, Mitsuwa and Nijiya) you can also purchase it on sites like Sasa, as well as on Amazon, etc.

Naive Facial Cleansing Foam in Rose
(retail: around $7, 6.7 oz)

Naive Facial Cleansing Foam comes in several different scents/formulas, but the Rose formula is the most popular, so that's why I went with it (I had to see what all the fuss was about!). I've been using this product off and on for about three months now, and I definitely have a strong opinion about it. Keep reading for my full review, after the jump...

standard flip-top tube

paraben-free

This product has a very thick, yet slippery consistency. The amount in this photo is equivalent to the amount of toothpaste you'd put on your toothbrush. This is definitely enough to cleanse my entire face:

I suggest getting your hands wet before you apply this product to your palm.Once you start rubbing your palms together, you will probably need to add a tiny bit more water to your hands because it takes a bit of time to get a foam going, due to the thick consistency. Once you add more water, this product eventually breaks down and creates a nice, thick lather.

In this photo, I added a bit too much water to my palm, but you can see that there are plenty of bubbles:

Texture and consistency: This is a thick, rich formula. It basically looks like toothpaste when you first dispense it into your palm, but it has a slippery consistency. It takes some effort to break down with water, but once you get it going, the lather is thick and luxurious and it feels amazing when you're working it into your skin.

Cleansing abilities: This cleanser easily removes waterproof mascara, waterproof eyeliner, long-wear foundation and sunscreen. The first time I used it on a full face of makeup, I was shocked after I rinsed it off, because there was not a trace of mascara or eyeliner left on my eyes.

Ease of rinse: Surprisingly easy to rinse! I thought that, because of the thick, rich consistency, it would take some effort to rinse this product from my face. But the moment I splash my face with water, it easily rinses away with little to no effort.

After effects: Here's the weird part. After I rinse this product from my face, I can feel a very slight oily residue on my skin. It makes it so the water that's left on my skin forms little beads (sort of like if you apply pure olive oil to your skin and then try to rinse it, but not nearly as heavy-feeling as olive oil). I'm guessing that the residue that's left on my skin is the castor seed oil. But here's the strange part: once I towel-dry my face, the residue is gone gone. I don't know how that happens, but when I touch my face (after towel-drying) it just feels soft, not oily. I can honestly say that I've never experienced a cleanser quite like this, because it's so efficient at removing my makeup, but yet it doesn't ever leave my face feeling dry or tight. Also, I have not experienced any breakouts or irritation in the three months that I've been using this product.

Fragrance: This product has a nice, creamy rose fragrance to it. I would classify the fragrance level as medium. Not barely-there, but not "knock your socks off" strong.

FINAL VERDICT: I now understand why this product is such a top-seller in both Japan and the US. It is extremely effective at removing every last stitch of makeup (even waterproof mascara) and it does not leave my face feeling dry or tight in the process. I adore the consistency and the fact that this formula produces such a thick, luxurious foam, and I love how this product feels on my skin when I'm working it onto my face. It rinses easily and if you can get past the slight oily-residue you'll feel once you've rinsed (which goes away after towel-drying), I think you'll be quite happy with how soft and clean your face feels after use. I love this cleanser so much that I'm excited to try the other formulas (Pomegranate and Aloe are next on my list).

Have you tried Naive Rose Facial Cleansing Foam? I would love to hear about your experiences!

  2. Another reason I love that you post the ingredient lists -- Myristic Acid is a coconut oil derivative that makes my (And several people who suffer with acne) skin freak out. This sounds lovely and I wish I could use it! :(

  7. They have this in Korean grocery stores too. I'm always tempted to try it, but I have a lot of cleansers to go through before I think about getting a new one.

  8. Does it make you nervous to apply fragrance to your face?

    1. Only if the fragrance is REALLY strong. I generally don't have bad reactions to light or moderately scented face products.

  9. I put in / take out my contacts right after washing my face. Will the oily residue cause a problem?

    Thanks,Mary

    1. I'm sorry, I don't wear contacts, so I have no way of knowing if this will effect that. However, I keep my eyes tightly shut whenever I use ANY cleanser because cleanser stings my eyes. I have never had this cleanser seep into my eyes or effect my vision, but again, I do keep my eyes tightly shut during use.

  10. Ooh, this looks promising. And I need a new facial cleanser--I have a cleansing oil I love, but I like to wash my face with a regular cleanser following the oil. I'll see if I can find this locally, as we have many Asian groceries around here (I'm in the Seattle area). If not, Amazon is my friend *g* (Love Amazon Prime!)

    2. Hi G! I haven't tried this yet but I did order it and a couple other cleansers from sasa.com the other night, so here's hoping I like it when I get it. Also thinking of you, I picked up a bottle of pure jojoba oil at Trader Joe's tonight, because I'm having some flaky skin issues and am hoping this can help restore my normal skin *g* I thought of you when I saw the bottle.

  15. Oh yay! I would have never tried this product but now I can't wait for Marukai to open tomorrow so I can run in and buy it!! I have tried the Naive oil cleanser (in olive oil) and I totally hated it ... it didn't remove makeup as well as other oil cleansers (my HG is softymo oil cleanser - it comes in a yellow bottle and it takes every. single. trace. of make up... but it does leave a slightly oily residue that I always wash off with a second face wash (my mom uses the oil only and she loves it, but she has dry skin and I have oily). Have you ever tried the shiseido perfect whip cleansers? they come in a blue tube - I bought one months ago and it also has a very weird thick texture, I'm wondering if it is similar to the naive one?

    1. I have not tried Perfect Whip yet, but i've been eyeing it for about a year now! Lol! I actually just bought the Biore (Japanese) cleanser in the tube (blue label) and the consistency is also very similar, but it doesn't seem to remove my eye makeup as well as the Naive. :(

    2. The shiseido perfect whip doesn't have an intentional fragrance (it kinda smells plastic-y... like puff paint that you use to decorate fabrics if that makes any sense?) but the smell is not very strong, so it might be better for those who don't like a scent. It totally lasts FOREVER though - I think because you literally need a tiny pea sized amount and it foams up and washes... but I don't know if it takes away all the makeup without a pre-oil cleanser first .. I'll try tonight and let you know!

  16. I really like Naive's body wash, too. It leaves you feeling clean, but moisturized. I wish we had good Asian supermarkets here...I get mine from my aunt, who lives in the Los Angeles area.

  17. Hi, I am so happy to see you reviewed this. I bought some on a whim yesterday and was really unsure about using it until I saw your review.

So, I used it last night on a full face of makeup with some heavy gel eyeliner on, and while it did work really well to get most of the make-up off, I found that there were still places around my eyes that the foam couldn't reach because they were closed. I am wondering, do you have any tips as to how to get that last little bit of eyeliner out from the inside of your eye without needing to have some separate cleanser?

    Thanks!

  18. I picked up this face wash at my local Marukai because of your post. I can't wait to try it! I always want to try Asian face products but there's not as many reviews about them.

  19. Glad to know that you're also a San Diegan. =)
I've been trying to find a good facial cleanser, but I'm always on a budget.
Since this is less than ten bucks I'll give this a try especially since you stated that it didn't make you break out. Definitely need that. Thanks for the review!
