Lipstick Question of the Week
Do you think cosmetic ads should have a disclaimer if they use excessive photoshop, false lashes and such?
G's answer: Absolutely! I can't think of anything more misleading than adding (or taking away) elements in an image that are meant to represent a product--and not telling consumers that the images have been altered. I really long for the commercials of the 70s, 80s and even early 90s when they actually had the models use the product in the commercial, and you saw exactly how the product looked on them. Like this:
(I also miss the catchy little jingles in cosmetics commercials. "Marathon looks just put on...until you take it off!". Aaaaah, memories.)

How do you feel about photoshopping, etc. in cosmetics ads?
The 'we heat this' link does not work.
ReplyDeleteagreed. I feel like marketing for cosmetics is pointless if the true result has been enhanced or altered for advertisement. How is anybody supposed to know how it performs?
ReplyDelete& that commercial is so cute. I forgot how cheesy the '80s were...well I wasn't alive for most of it, so I guess I can't speak too much for that decade. =]
That commercial was so much fun. Ought to make them a weekly feature.
ReplyDeleteIMO they should not be able to use artificial enhancements at all, disclaimer or not. It's false advertizing, plain and simple. The other thing that really bugs me is when they state the model is wearing a certain product in a certain color... yet it looks nothing like the actual product.
It is very misleading. I'd rather a company be truthful and actually stand behind it's products. It sets up impossible standards and expectations for women.
ReplyDeleteI especially don't like when anti-aging products are shown on 20 year old models. Why believe any advertisement we see?
I remember that commercial! (Showing my age here ...) I do wish ads would post disclaimer. Mascara ads are the worst with obvious fakery. No on has lashes like you see in all those ads! I think only Cover Girl puts a note that "lash inserts" were used, which is much appreciated! But how about a real before and after? They have better technology these days with all the fibers and whatnot!
ReplyDeleteYes! It is annoying, and very deceptive. I would also like it if they listed all the makeup used on the models and not just thr featured product. I have similar coloring to Halle Berry and can never find the revlon shade of lipstick used on her for the natural/nude lips. I only see the highlighted products.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to see ads featuring before and afters!!! Especially for mascara. I'm sure other women feel the same. To think "my lashes look like this, let me buy this so they can look like that" ..certainly effective
