My Top Ten Beauty Pet Peeves

MY TOP TEN BEAUTY PET PEEVES

If you follow me on Facebook (which, by the way, you should if you'd ever like to chit chat with all of us over there!), then you know that I sometimes post status updates expressing my frustrations (aka rants) about beauty and other things in life.

So this post was actually born of a few status updates I did a while back, which received lots of "likes," meaning that many of you seem to share the same types of frustrations (soooo glad I'm not alone in my misery!). So here are the things that tend to the bug me the most when it comes to the wonderful world of beauty:

Number 10

Having to sneeze immediately after applying mascara.

Number 9

Having perfectly clear skin on days when no one sees me. Why do I always get a blemish (or three) on a day when I have an important engagement or meeting or have to have my photo taken?

Number 8

Getting a chip on a manicure that I really wanted to keep perfect for just one day.

Number 7

Turning my favorite shampoo/conditioner/body wash upside down in the shower so that the very last drops go to the top of the bottle so that I can get just one more application. And then getting in the shower the next day to discover that I didn't quite click the lid closed all the way.

Number 6

Realizing I just ran out of makeup remover towelettes on the exact night when I'm just too tired/lazy/cold to stand at the sink and properly wash my face.

Keep reading to see my top five beauty pet peeves...

Number 5

Using an old, stretched out ponytail holder that isn't tight enough after two wraps around my hair but it just...won't...make...it all the way around to a third wrap.

Number 4

Digging through my purse to find the lipstick I want to wear...and pulling out seven other lipsticks instead of the one I want (why is the one I want always the last one I pull out of my purse?).

Number 3

Standing at the drugstore debating for an hour over which shade of eyeshadow to buy, only to come home and realize that the one I ended up buying doesn't look good on me. (And then going back to the drugstore to get the one I should have bought...only to discover that it's now sold out.)

Number 2

Using a bath pouf that is floppy and old (and overdue to be replaced) with a chord that is dyed the same color as the actual pouf. I swear I have to spend a good 15 minutes standing in my shower because I cannot find the darned chord. I turn the thing over...and over...and the chord is just hiding inside the folds of the bath pouf, taunting me! Fifteen minutes later, I finally find the chord so that I can hang the pouf back up on the shower caddy.

And my Number 1 Beauty Pet Peeve

Being somewhere without any hand lotion...when I have 186 bottles of hand lotion sitting at home.

  1. Those are all totally true! I would say, off the cuff, that my top five are:

5- when one eyeshadow in a palette crumbles to dust all over the rest of them

4- when lipsticks break off or fall out of their tubes (this happened to my CG Flipstick, sadly, the same week i bought it!)

3- the way the beauty aisle at my local Walmart is consistently and thoroughly TRASHED

2- never seeing the one LE display you most want to find with all your heart, and

    1- PACKAGES WITHOUT SAFETY SEALS.

  2. hahaha this is the best accurate funny truth post I've ever read!!All way to 10 I have exactly the same issues! lol
Have a Happy new year honey.

    1. Thank you so much, Irene!! And right back atcha, love! *hugs*

    2. I agree with the no safety seals on products
I think also how in the drugstore the last item left in color I want has been opened and used/swatched

  3. You pretty much covered it with 1, 3 and 5. But I would add glitter polish that peels off in sheets when you take your first shower and/or wash your hands. Also, never being able to find my tiny eye pencil sharpener (or forgetting to pack on when I go on vacation). Dull liners suck and can be painful!

    1. But it is just oh-so satisfying to peel a nail polish off in nice, big sheets after a few days. It's a bored habit, I can't help it. But it's a good excuse to repaint them!

      Delete
    2. Gotta agree with tinfoil on that one! Lol!

      Delete
    3. Ok, I do agree that I like peeling my polish off too (shame face). However, I also like it to last just a bit longer than an hour! I just put on a sparkly glitter for NYE, then showered and ta-da! One nail fully GONE! I had to laugh because it was right after I posted my comment. Should have known better. Needless to say, I am not wearing glitter tonight :)

  4. Love it. As an allergy sufferer, I totally relate to #1. As well as messing up mascara in general--more often than not I bump into my nose or stab myself in the eye with it.

Another one: getting lipstick on my teeth. I'm not good at keeping it off them...

Finally, the fact that I never run out of shampoo and conditioner at the same time.

    1. Tip for the lipstick issue: right after you apply, put your (clean) finger in your mouth and slowly pull it out, like you would a popsicle. I swear it works every time...a makeup artist gave me that tip 20 years ago and i've never had lipstick on my teeth since! :)

      Delete
    2. can't you just blot with a tissue? I know that trick but hate the lipstick on my finger! (a pet peeve)...

  5. Number 5 is THE WORST! Along those same lines, it's also infuriating with you're just about done pulling your hair through and *snap* the stupid thing explodes in your hand. And then you don't have a spare. Ack!

    ReplyDelete
  6. 5. When I buy a pencil eyeliner only to find it not creamy enough or way too creamy
    4. My hair being oily even if I don't use any styling products
    3. Not finding a foundation shade that fits me in the drugstore
    2. No pump on a lot of the drugstore foundations
    1. When something looks better in the packaging than it does on you, or swatched. But unable to return it for whatever reason.

  7. Sneezing and waiting for liquid liner and mascara to dry are mines.

  8. Being somewhere without lip balm when I have 186 tubes sitting somewhere!

    1. I think that's my #1, too -- I never seem to have chapstick when I need it (and I NEVER need it at home LOL)

  9. Great list! To which I'd add: eyeliner pencil tips breaking off when you try to sharpen them! Happens to me ALL the time.

    1. Oh G., dontcha HATE that?? And then it becomes a nub like two days after you bought it! Argh!!

  10. Ecotools makes a great bath poof/loofah, and I use a cheesey hair clip to hold it in place in the shower. The poof is pretty inexpensive, too! And the hair elastic thing is annoying. I hate getting in the shower and as soon as I step in realizing I forgot to grab a fresh razor. Also- today, my eyebrows are fine but tomorrow I will wake up and find my monobrow happily laughing at me from the mirror. Okay- one more. Doing makeup in bad lighting and getting outside and discovering you wayyyyyy overdid on your blush, the hardest thing to fix.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oooh, the forgetting the razor is the worst!! Lol!

  11. These are trully beauty problems! I have done all of them. Hopefully 2013 will be better for you! :) Have a happy one G!

  12. I have all of the same pet peeves. Plus:

When a new makeup product that I want to try is listed as "in stock" online when I go to the store to buy it, it's not in stock or it is in an odd location.

Staring at products forever to figure out what shade of lip stick/gloss/eyeshadow looks good on me when there aren't many swatches online yet, no testers, and the packaging makes it hard to see the actual product color.

Ohh the joys of beauty! lol

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. nicking any product
    2. forgetting to bring an eye pencil sharpener on a trip
    3. finding out a mascara does unspeakable things to your eyelashes
    4. buying a lipstick then finding out it just doesn't work with your colouring
    5. having a basket full of products you won't use and can't return but still can't seem to toss
    6. not having lip balm
    7. having to use a non-fast drying top coat

    ReplyDelete

    1. Replace ”basket” with ”half a room” and i'm totally with you on #5! Lol!!

  14. Using the bath pouf and having to rinse it 3 or 4 times just to get all of the soap suds out of it once I'm done showering. That's why I went back to using wash cloths.

  15. My number 1 is seeing that the store's last of a lipstick, eyeshadow, nail polish etc was opened and swatched!!!

    1. Mine is when, as a store employee, I watched someone open a foundation with a safety seal, swatch it, then put it back on the shelf. Since I am not a manager, I can't say anything. By the time I got back with someone, they were gone. Seriously?

      Delete
  17. Oh gosh YES!! Number three is like... My life, haha!

    ReplyDelete
  18. 5. Putting on just a little too much eyeliner on one eye and having to do it to the other because you don't have time to re-apply.

4.When an employee has the big stock cart right in front of the brand section I want to look at.

    3. Putting on just a little too much eyeliner on one eye and having to do it to the other because you don't have time to re-apply.

    2. Having lipstick fade and drying to lips out to be chapped, with no lip balm in my purse to save me

    1. Buying an expensive foundation, finding out it's the wrong shade, and finding you lost the receipt and box. ( Never again! )

    1. I hate it when #2 happens!!

      Delete
    2. The eyeliner one happens to me more often than not!

Also, when attempting cat eyes, my right eye is just a tad thicker/pointing slightly higher, so I try to add more to my left eye, but i add too much, so I go back to add more to the right, etc.
Then by the time ive finally evened them out, the wings look like a ridiculous Cleopatra Halloween costume... so I have to vigorously rub it off with makeup remover and vow never to try and "perfect" the wing... I still do it EVERY freaking time.

That's the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

      I'm insane.

  19. (Sorry if this posts twice!)
AKA major First World Problems! LOL
I agree with everything here & what misssomayea commented, foundations without pumps frustrate me!
And concealers that come with a brush and not in a squeeze tube- the brushes can get so unsanitary!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm not alone! Lol I also agree with what everyone added. I hate how I swear my mascara always looks crappier on my left eye than my right :( BUT I'm left handed :/ GAH

    ReplyDelete
  23. How I love all of these lol :)
Some of mine are...lining my waterline and my eyes start to tear or lining my waterline with a new product and two minutes later my eyes are on fire.
Hand lotion tht isnt moisturizing. I feel like I hve to put on 3layers bc the first or 2nd layer didnt attack the dryness

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sneezing WHILE you are applying mascara. Not only does it get everywhere but you stick yourself in the eye with the wand and then you have smeary liner and one red eye on top of everything else.

Empty displays that stay that way.. forever. Five of the product in the display.. all have been opened. Products (especially end cap displays) with no price tag. Is it free? Am I supposed to guess? The cashiers nasty attitude when I have to wait in line five times and "bother" them to check the prices on all the stuff that has no price tags. Sale tags that are either two months old no longer available.. or never put on at all.

Last but not least.. my stupid mini Sephora in JC Penny's (the ONLY place to buy high end cosmetics local to me) that stocks 300 items I don't want but never a single one of the ones I do.. makes up it's own rules regarding company policy on exchanges and returns and reserves the right to charge more than Sephora.com for the exact same item while at the same time refusing to honor sale prices.. and which has the most obnoxious, rude, and ignorant sales staff in the world. They know next to nothing about the products they carry and will flat out lie to you to make a sale.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure which Sephora in JCPenney you go to, but I've gone out of my way to visit 2 not too far from my parents' area (Maryland suburbs of DC -- Gaithersburg and Silver Spring) and find it's always less crowded than the Sephora at the closest mall (Montgomery, which is pretty upscale) and that there are usually a way huger section of the stuff on sale. They don't have some of the super high end stuff like hourglass or givenchy, but I think the sales associates there tend to spend a lot more time with you and be a lot more generous with advice and samples. I have never found the prices to be different at any Sephora from what's on the website. I'm sorry you have a bad experience with your local, but I think it's nice that women have an opportunity to try out higher end products at the Sephoras inside JCPenneys, since they tend to be in communities that are not very upscale.

  25. The hair tie one is the worst. This happens to all my hair ties lol.

My number one complaint is when I spend like an hour painting my nails meticulously, only to get a major smudge or dent in a nail. I just did a manicure with Revlon Heavenly, only to peel off each nail's polish in one solid sheet. :/

    ReplyDelete
  26. Having to buy a whole set of something for the one product/color you really wanted... nail polish, eye liner, eyeshadow, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  27. in no particular order--

-beautiful nail polish color, awful formula that doesn't cover and/or bubbles, chips, streaks, etc!

-doing an awesome eye look, then getting mascara all over your lid and you have to swipe it all off with a q-tip

-gorgeous (and expensive! ::cough:: ysl! ::cough::) lipsticks that crease or streak when applied.. i have this problem a lot :( lol

-when the loufa completely falls apart and becomes a single strand of meshy material!

-5 words: hair stuck in lip gloss!

have a beautiful new year, g!! thanks for all you do!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. The challenge of getting both eyes looking the same.
    2. Brands discontinuing the product I JUST decided was amazing. That's happened four times to me this year!
    3. Double duty base/top coats. How do they expect a single product to do completely opposing things? Give me a proper top coat any day!
    4. Doing your nails in the early afternoon or morning, then dinting them all overnight when you're sure they must be dry.
    5. Hair elastics that go through this process: too tight (at risk of snapping on the third pass), perfect for two uses, too loose (at risk of snapping when I try for a fourth pass). I swear none of mine are at that middle stage at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No drugstore testers!! That's the worse, also the rising prices at the drugstore. I mean don't get me wrong, they're doing great with all these dupes Of cult favorite highs end products, and I don't mind paying a bit more for those because they're a cheaper alternative, but honestly it's not very much inexpensive than high end. Their prices are getting very similar, and it adds up very quickly!! They still are cheaper than the high end, but I feel we are losing a bit o the margin-it went from pretty big to pretty similar price wise in the last couple of years.

    5. Shaving. Just. Yeah. Its a necessary evil.

    4. having to run into a drugstore for a hand cream/ lip balm STAT! when i have dozens of them at home, hence WHY i have dozens of them at home >:(

    3. Having to reshape my brow to compensate for the first muck up just so that they are even. I just... don't want... to.. start.. all over again. Hmmph!

    2. Airbubbles on my newly manicured nails, just think of the "No Wire Hangaaaars!" scene in Mommy dearest. LOL

    1. I JUST had number 1 happen! I got a new purse out of the deal (which i had to buy myself and couldn't really afford but - yay, new purse)! However, I HAD to get the purse, because the entire inside was pink! Every time I put my hand in, or my phone, or my keys, they came out pink. It was like Barbie exploded in there. So not cool.

  32. Some of your beauty Pet Peeves are so true,I can agree on just about most of them.
I have to say mines have to be when I just apply Mascara,I have this sudden urge to blink,in which I do.lol Oh! Just getting done doing your nails I either have to go to the bath room or get a drink of water. And,also buying a shade of lipstick/eyeshadow because I thought it look nice on me,and usually doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha, the bath pouf one is SO true!

  34. G,
You should do a round up of all the recent spotted items! I can't keep track of them all, and I know it's not just me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL! By the time I read this I think that every beauty pet peeve has been mentioned! I heartily "second" every single one and simply cannot come up with anything new! Great reading this tho'! Nothing like a laugh and groan to start the day! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

  37. Number 7 couldn't help but smile bc that's so me!! Thought I was alone on this but clearly i'm not! cute post G! Thanks, Leslie

  38. Being totally unable to get eyeliner to look the same9 on both eyes. One eye will look ok, then the other looks better, but not the same. So I go back to fix the first one,but they still don't look the same. Then trying back on the other one, messing it up, and giving up altogether, only I now have so much product on my eye that its going to take about an hour to take it off.

    ReplyDelete
  39. HAHAHA this made me laugh! Sneezing after mascara happens to be all the time! The sucky part is, it only happens when my eye makeup looks awesome LOL

    Happy new Year!

  40. Hey G,
Regarding the lipsticks in the purse: it's always the LAST one you pull out, because if you find it earlier, you'd have stopped pulling out the rest of the lipsticks!

It happens to me all the time. ;+)

Happy New Year, G and Mr. G!

  43. I love the sneezing one. I've done that way too many times to count, and then of course you're wiping mascara off from under your eyes. My single biggest pet peeve is that most stores have no testers. Just let me swipe it on my hand so I can get an idea of the color already! My second one would be to have less scented products. Never been a fan of putting on a face cream or a lipstick that smells like fruit cocktail, soap or a mish-mash of flowers.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Omg #10 and #1 definitely apply to me lol! A couple of mine are: No foundation testers at the store! And when people wear black liner on their top and bottom lash lines....and no other makeup! It just doesn't look good on anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  45. trying to finish a product (lotion) and can't find it so you open up a new package just to find it later, now two unfinished items.

  46. A pet peeve for me is getting my hair to look perfect but when I get out into the car, I see that it has mysteriously flopped. :/

I feel your pain, beauty folks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. In no particular order:

    - being 100% convinced my manicure is completely dry, only to find dings later.

    - finding the ONE tube of lipstick I want is the only one left, and it's been used by who knows who!

    - NEVER finding a drugstore foundation that matches my ultra-light skin color

    - product packaging that means you'll never be able to get the last of the product out.

    - actually getting my temperamental curly hair to look great *in* the house, only for it to frizz the instant I step outside, no matter *what* Holy Grail product I've used that day

    - lining my waterline, only to have it migrate under my lower lashes a few hours later.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yellow nails.... :/
annnd.... most annoying of all for me, having black liner residue left over from the day before that I can't remove and it messes up my intended new look with a lighter liner color :(

    ReplyDelete
  49. You know for me pimples pop out of nowhere when I'm stressed.

I have lots of pet peeves but I'm going share a few...

    1. Messing up freshly painted nails. This drives me nuts.
    2. Not realizing my eyeliner was misbehaving and I spent half the day unaware of it and no one cares to help a sister and tell me I have racoon eyes, lol.
    3. Going out of my way to buy a product other people rave about just to find out that I don't like it as much as they do.
    4. I know how to do my nails, my makeup, but I am helpless when it comes to hair.
    5. Nice packaging, bad product or vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I feel all of your pain...lol. I have been in both wholesale & retail beauty for about 20 years and have heard many, still a beauty junkie though.

My #1 pet peeve is finding a brand with a formula that is fabulous only to realize that it turns some unholy color on me.
#2 Realizing that the older I get (I'm 46), my skin chemistry has changed and having to find new basic products, cleanser, moisturizer, etc.
#3 This one comes from my managerial back ground...when I ask a SA about a product and they look blankly at me with that head tilt reserved for dogs that hear noises I can't. It's your job to know, why is it that you don't?

    ReplyDelete
  51. One of my absolute pet peeves, is finding out that my lipstick cap has fallen off in my purse, and a) either gotten all over everything in my purse, or b) gotten little bits of gunk in the lipstick.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I didn't realize so many people had the problem of nail polish peeling off. That has never once happened to me! Weird.

I hate the hair-tie thing too. Well, I did when I had long hair. Now it's short so I don't have to deal with that anymore. Yay!

Also, every time I try to line my waterline, it ends up all underneath my eyes. Same thing with mascara. So I just stopped doing it. :(

Sharpening liners is such a PITA. Seems like the tip always breaks off inside the sharpener, making you waste product. That's why I don't buy a lot of pencil liners anymore.

I hate it when products settle into every single fine line and make me look old! What's the point of even wearing it if it makes me look worse?

Also, foundations with sparkly stuff in them should be illegal.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hey G... for your #10... here is my solution, when you feel that sneeze coming, use thumbs and index fingers to open the eyes wide and when that sneeze comes due to the automatic human body reflexes, your eyes will shut, but since your fingers are trying to keep them open, they won't shut so hard, causing mascara to go everywhere. Hope this helps!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. My number 1 pet peeve hasn't been mentioned yet...

#1: Developing an irritation/allergy to an ingredient: and then trying to isolate the common irritant in your beauty stash.

#2: Buying new products WITHOUT the common irritant as replacements. Only to discover that some of the new products also contain some sort of irritating ingredient. The entire cycle begins anew...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mine hasn't been mentioned either
I go to the store and am wanting a certain shade and it isn't in its right home. Revlon Lip Butter displays I'm talking to you!
