My favorite Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes

Reader mjboese requested that I do a "My favorite Sally Hansen CSM colors" post and I was happy to oblige! Given that the entire permanent collection (NOT limited edition colors) is currently on Last Chance clearance at most Walgreens locations right now for about $2 each, I hope this post might give you some ideas if you don't already own many of these polishes.

Before I get into my favorites, I want to reiterate that if you don't see these polishes on clearance at your Walgreens, take some bottles to the register and ask a cashier to scan them. Hopefully they'll come up on clearance in the system. And if they don't, hopefully they will be on clearance for you soon. (Click here and check the comments to see where these have been spotted on clearance across the US). And thanks SO much to everyone who has left comments on that post letting other readers know where you've spotted these on clearance. That's incredibly helpful and much appreciated!

So let's get to my all-time favorite CSM polishes:

Left to right: Gray by Gray, Plum Luck, Commander in Chic, Thinking of Blue

Swatches, after the jump...

You may be asking yourself why only cremes made my top picks. Well, the answer is easy: these are not all of my favorites from the CSM line. They're just my favorites from the permanent collection (I have lots and lots of other favorite non-cremes, but they're all limited edition and thus, not on clearance).

But let me tell you, I think these CSM polishes are some of the best cremes in my (rather large) creme collection. In terms of color, ease of application and performance, these four polishes are pretty darned amazing for me. Tip: try skipping a base coat for longer staying power. This seems to work really well for me!

Also: I noticed that some of you commented this week about the CSM brushes, and how much you don't care for them. When this line first debuted a few years ago, I remember complaining about the brushes too, but I have since grown to love them. I think they make application really easy, as long as you wipe down the brush first. And when I say wipe down, I don't mean wipe down the front and back of the brush, but rather the sides of the brush. I've noticed that if I run each side against the opening of the bottle before I apply my polish, it delivers the perfect amount of polish to the nail. I wish I could remember which one of you told me that trick a while back, because I would really like to thank you. It totally changed my feeling about these brushes.

(Note: any bubbles you see in these photos were caused by my top coat and not the polishes themselves. I did these swatches as quickly as possible today and that's what caused the bubbles.)

 Gray by Gray

Gray by Gray is the most chameleon-like of all the grays I own. In certain lights it looks like a dark cement gray, and in other lights it veers more told dolphin gray, with the blue becoming more apparent. I just adore this gray--it's one of my favorites, and I own a lot of grays. Two coats for perfect opacity (you might even be able to get away with one thick coat).

 Plum Luck

The reason why Plum Luck made my favorites list is because I have a lot of vampy reds and vampy purples, but this is the only true vampy plum that I own. It's not the greatest formula (it's sheer and requires three coats for the opacity you see above), but the color makes it one of my favorite vampy cremes of all time.

 Commander in Chic

One of the first polishes to start the whole greige freight train that blew into drugstores a few years ago, Commander in Chic will always hold a special place in my heart. I made such a big deal about this color when it first appeared at the drugstore--It was so original at the time and I remember feeling so stylish when I wore it. Sure, there are dozens and dozens of dupes out there these days, but this one's still a favorite. You do need three coats for perfect opacity, but I think the color is so classic and, at two bucks, it's worth the extra coat if you don't have any other greiges in your collection.

 Thinking of Blue

I think everyone needs a classic, inky-blue creme in their collection. It's one of those colors that is "serious" yet still a tiny bit "edgy" at the same time. Thinking of Blue has been a go-to for me for a while now because it's just so stunning on the nail, it goes with so much in my wardrobe, and it's almost a one-coater. The formula is so easy to work with, and it's not a stainer. No "smurf hands" after removal!

So there you have it! My favorite permanent-collection CSM polishes. What are yours? Please share with us in the comments!

All of the polishes featured in this post were purchased with personal funds.

  1. Nice selection. I have Grey by Grey, I love it too.

Did you put it first for a reason or was that random?

    1. Glad you love it too! And nope, no order. Just random. :)

  2. I spotted sets of these at Big Lots. A set of 5 polishes was priced at $8. I wasn't sure if that was a nice formula but I see several of your favorites were included!

    1. Aaaah, I haven't seen those 5-pks at my BL yet, but I've heard about them! Thanks for the reminder--hopefully they'll be at my BL tomorrow for the F&F sale! :)

  3. yay, I also bought Plum Luck! I don't remember seeing Thinking of Blue so I'll go to another Walgreens to see if I can find it :)

    2. I found Thinking of Blue in the clearance bin at one of the Walgreen's, priced differently than the rest. I only found it at that one store, though, and not displayed with the rest of them. You'll probably have to do some scrounging.

  4. Love Plum Luck and Commander in Chic! They've been on my list for a while. I guess I can't wait any longer.

This last chance sale is very strange though. Maybe Sally Hansen is thinking about changing the brush (since quite a few people don't like it)? Well, we'll see.

    1. I've worn that color on my toes many times and it's so pretty. I think you'll love it! Also, believe it or not, pink glitter polishes look really pretty layered on top of it, if you want to give your toes some extra sparkle. :)

    1. Sorry you missed my earlier sale alert par about this sale!

The objective for last chance clearance sales is to get rid of all remaining product, so there usually isn't an end date. They'll probably be on clearance until the bottles are wiped out.

  7. Thank you for doing this! I was hoping someone would get a discussion about favorites from this line going.

Commander in Chic is so much prettier on the nail than it looks in the bottle. I saw it featured as one of the colors in this greige comparison video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjGxBnP0bm0 and had to have it. I've been rocking an ombre mix of several different greiges for the past couple of days and CiC is easily my favorite of the five.

And how funny that you mention comparisons...you just reminded me that I actually did a huge greige/taupe comparison about a year ago! :)

    2. And thank you for the greige comparison. I just went out today and picked up Nyx Girls The Taupe and Chocolate Taupe because of your post. You know, it's funny, before I started reading your blog I was not a fan of cremes, or nudes, or grays at all. It was glitter and pearl all the way for me. But you raved about them so much that I finally dipped my toe in when I found Revlon's Stormy in a 2-pack at Big Lots. I was hooked. :)

  8. I don't own any of this line from Sally Hansen, just the Xtreme Wear line. I don't particularly like that line because the formulas differ so much from color to color. But now I will definitely have to check out Thinking of Blue. Blue polish is my absolute favorite color, and I'm always a sucker for one that won't stain! I'm also a sucker for cheap nail polish! :P

  9. Just got a few of these polishes from my Walgreens (Buffalo, NY), however not all colors were on sale there(but the vast majority were, there were only a few that were not on clearance for some reason...)

I got Peachy Keen, Choco-Latte and Calypso Blue. I've only tried the Calypso Blue so far and it is stunningly gorgeous, went on smoothly, and was opaque in two coats.

    1. Maybe the ones that weren't on clearance were limited edition colors?

  10. It's odd that Target has them at the regular price. I have to check my CVS later today. This might point to them only d/c @ Walgreen's. Is this an idea you might agree with, G?

    1. At this point, I don't know what to think! Lol! I keep seeing/hearing about these polishes being spotted at Ross, Big Lots, etc. and then remember my mom spotted them at the dollar store a few weeks ago? Those sightings lead me to believe that maybe they are getting rid of them, or maybe changing something about them (formula, packaging, colors?). I guess time will tell! :)

    2. I left a comment about your Mom on the You Tell Me page. Did you see it? ;D

  11. Thanks for the tip on the brush sides. Maybe that will make me like ALL the big brush lines more. Why do they have to make the bottle openings so small when the brushes are so large? The fit is too tight and I feel like I'm playing Operation - if I touch the top I'll get buzzed (and my bottle will be sealed shut the next time I go to use it).

The one big bush I do like is Rimmel's. I never see anyone talk about that one. I noticed in the Sally Beauty Supply sale ad that Nina Ultra Pro polish now has this same double brush.
http://www.sallybeauty.com/sales/sale-flyer,default,pg.html?cgid=Specials (on the bottom right on page 1)

My theory on why CSM is being clearanced: to make room for their two new lines. Since they have only so much allotted shelf space, they have to eliminate something. Someone on Facebook asked about this, but so far they've not responded.

    2. My take was they are doing a major clearance on some of the older classic shades in this line...sad to see some of 'em going...esp Gray By Gray. SH released new shades into this collection just 2 months ago so I find it odd if they are axing it now totally.

    1. Maybe it's just taking a while for them to go on clearance at all locations? I'm not really sure! Lol!

  13. Is that formula hard to work with? Some of the pics show bubbles, but didn't know if that's just a photography issue or topcoat issue.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I explained the bubbling in this post. :) It's the top coat, not the polishes.

  14. Although I was fortunate to get a few of these at my Walgreens I am assuming that soon other venues like CVS, Rite Aid, Target, etc will also be discounting them if the line is going to be changed in some way. I noticed that at one of the Rite Aids I frequent they had many open slots and do not seem to be replenishing the stock... I am hopeful for more sales elsewhere soon.

    1. Aaah, great point!! I have noticed that at Rite Aid too!

  15. I have Grey by Grey and like the color but found that it dried rather dull. So it needed a shiny top coat and therefore wasn't the "complete manicure" that SH claims. No big deal, especially on sale, but I do think these are overpriced at their original cost.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, most of the colors I own don't have a true, shiny top coat finish. But I don't mind because I feel ”naked” without my top coat! Lol! :)

  18. My Walgreens did not have any sale/clearance signs up for the SH Complete Manicure line. They were shown at the full price of $7.99. Fortunately, I asked the clerk to scan the six I picked out and all of them came up as $1.89! Don't forget to check!

  20. So glad you posted this (I think!) - I have already picked up probably about 20 (no kidding!!), but of your faves, I only have one - Gray by Gray. Skipped over the Griege color (which I guess I am late on the band wagon with, 'cause I have none!), so maybe I should go back & get this one. Also passed on the plum one, but re-thinking that & unfortunately in my area (South Fl) they do not seem to have that gorgeous blue - only Calypso Blue, which I did get. Bummed now, because I really want THAT blue too!! Off tomorrow to hit more stores :))

  21. Gray by Gray reminds me so much of Butter London's Artful Dodger, or am I imagining things?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like Thinking of Blue, so pretty!!!♥♥

    ReplyDelete
  23. Great choices - I would add in Fairy Teal to this group as well - it's always spot on right for a teal cream that is not too green - too blue. I am a big fan of this line and love the brush.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Of the 7 CSM polishes that I have, 5 of them look noticeably darker on the nail than in the bottle. So be sure to take that into account when making your hauls, ladies. Bittersweet is the biggest culprit, going from a cocoa color in the bottle to a dark rich chocolate on the nail. I also want to mention that Purple Pulse is an extremely close dupe for NYC "Purple Pizzazz Frost" and The Icing "Forget You." If you have either of those, you probably don't need Purple Pulse. Also, Purple Pulse has a very thin consistency; definitely a 3 or 4-coater.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're not kidding about the number of coats needed for Purple Pulse; it took four coats for me - same with Black Platinum. I have never used polishes that needed more than three coats and figured they'd look thick and awful, but that wasn't the case (both were beautiful).

G - I picked up Thinking of Blue on clearance earlier this year; are you sure it's part of the permanent collection? I don't see it listed on their site and would hate for people to be running from store to store looking for a shade that's no longer available.

      Delete
  25. IDK why, but Grey by Grey definitely looks blue to me, here on the swatch and the bottle shot, and in person in the bottle. Anyone else see this, or am I seeing things weirdly? (I usually do XD)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Enabler! :) I may have to hit my local Walgreens. Even though we don't usually get the national sales, if it's a clearance, I might get lucky!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I loooove Thinking of Blue and C in C, don't have or feel like I need the others. My favorite CSM is definitely Fedora, a light beige/taupe with pearly shimmer, but it was LE. I totally agree with these polishes tending to dry darker than in the bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I stopped at Walgreens yesterday before I read your post. I picked up Gray By Gray (after a lot of thought), Calypso Blue (I think it looks better in the bottle), I Pink I Can (not sure why) and Hidden Treasure. I had given my friend Hidden Treasure, which I found on clearance at CVS a few months ago. I really wanted my own bottle. There was a red that was very pretty that I wish I had purchased instead of the second bottle of Calypso Blue.

Isis, I have Gray by Gray on one of my fingers. It is not blue. It reminds me of construction site metal grey, if that makes any sense. I do not know how I feel about it.

  30. Yay! Thank you so much, G! I love these discussions and also I love having the pictures and smaller scope of list to help me work through what I might want to pick up.

I don't think I noticed any of those at the nearest WAGS (9 miles away), but I'm pretty sure they only had 28 slots, definitely a smaller store. If today's experiments work out well, I may have to do some extra looking around!

Isis04, it looks like a light gray blue to me, and G even refers to it as "veer[ing] [to] dolphin gray." Although it *could* just be my monitor, I always drove my first boyfriend crazy by referring to his car as being "steel blue," even though his family (it was a hand-me-down car) always referred to it as "the gray car." Could it be that some of us are extra sensitive to blue undertones?

    ReplyDelete

    1. @mjboese: I think you are absolutely right in saying some of us are extra sensitive not only to blue undertones, but others as well. Great point. Thanks a bunch!

    2. My $.02 cents worth about Gray By Gray: It seems to be equal parts blue and gray, so that if you swatch it with other blues it looks gray, and if you swatch it with other grays it looks blue. It's tricksy like that.

      Delete
    3. Gray by gray looks even more blue in these photos than in real life. When I looked at it in store I was thing the name was inappropriate and was greige gardens because it looks light purple (lilac maybe!) to me. Guess our eyes just work differently ;)

  31. Has anyone else had a core line CSM ring up at full price? I picked up a few today and Gray by Gray rang up full price. The supervisor said that Gray by Gray was not on the list to be clearanced out, which he agreed was strange since every other color they carried was marked down. Unfortunately their selection was really picked over, so I'll try another Wags tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gray by Gray came up full price for me too but when I asked the cashier why, she just did a manual override. Nice!

I've been to 2 Wags and 1 had the polishes clearanced for $2.29 and another had them for $1.99.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just picked 4 bottles up for $.95 each (discount and $ 1 off coupons I've had stashed away) I might pick up 2 more colors at the end of my shift

    ReplyDelete
  34. I actually picked up Thinking of Blue and Fairy Teal on clearance at CVS earlier this year, ahaha. I can't go buy anything right now though, which really sucks because I'd like to have more of these polishes :\

  35. plum luck is one of my favorite. and after seeing your swatch, i want 'commander in chic' so pretty and perfect for fall!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I found a bottle of Plum Luck at Duane Reade for $2.29, so I snagged it and did a quick polish change just now. I LOOOVE it! Perfect fall color, especially since I just cut my nails short. Gray by Gray, at least in your photos, looks a lot like L'Oreal's Now You Sea Me, which I just got last week. I may still have to get a bottle to compare. I passed on Commander in Chic, only because it looks so similar to polishes I already have. But I'll probably cave and go back tomorrow. Heh. Thanks for the list!

    ReplyDelete
  37. This Haute Chocolate looks pretty similar to my beloved L'Oreal Jet Set in Rhythm! (Yeah, I didn't buy anything for a few years there.) I can't wait to see it in natural light!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well, down here in sunny Florida at least, the clearance still has not reached the store level at Walgreens. I went in today to get a few more shades, and there were no sale or clearance signs. I had to ask the clerk to scan the price for me and her jaw literally dropped when she did! She thanked me 3x for coming in today and letting her know about the formula change. She's going shopping tonight, with her employee discount. I may go back for one or two more colors.

Just wanted to thank EVERYONE again involved in letting us know about this. What a great deal for those of us who like the CSM line!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gorgeous colors, I must try them. I hope that I can find them in my area.
