Dollar Tree sightings and haul (NYC, L.A. Colors, Maybelline, L'Oreal, CoverGirl and more)

Over the past year or two, Dollar Tree has really stepped up their game in terms of the variety of drugstore brand cosmetics you can find at any given time for, of course, $1 a piece. And now that they accept manufacturer's coupons, there's tons of opportunities to score free products, which is pretty amazing.

Last week I stopped by several Dollar Trees in my area and here's a summary of everything I spotted. I obviously can't guarantee that you'll find everything featured in this post at YOUR Dollar Tree, but it never hurts to look, right?

In fact: the LA Colors Value Kits I showed you back in June of 2011 still haven't shown up in my area, but I did find some similar palettes the other day and bought them all for a future review (I'll show you pics at the end of this post). And reader @JCRineer spotted a totally new-to-me L.A. Colors product that I'm super excited to show you as well, so keep reading for all the details...

First up, some NYC products:

NYC Jumbo Lipstick Pencils and Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder in 741 Translucent

Lots and lots of additional pics after the jump...

NYC Green Cover Stick, NYC Matte Powder Foundation and Maybelline Moisture Whip Lipstick

NYC Kiss Glosses and Smooth Mineral Eyeliner/Eyeshadow Kits

I seem to remember these cute little quads from a while back--I think they were limited edition but a quick check of my blog didn't turn up anything. At any rate, there were six different palettes at my Dollar Tree and here's a better look (they all seem to be shimmers and satins but there may be a few matte shades here):

Moving on to CoverGirl:

CoverGirl Gel Eyeslicks Gel Eye Color 2-packs

I believe the Eyeslicks were discontinued in 2009, but I know a lot of you still love them.

CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit in Glazed Ginger

Old packaging and a discontinued shade.

Moving on to Maybelline:

Lip colors (again, if you have $1 off Maybelline coupons, these would be free):

Maybelline Moisture Whip Lipstick and Hydra Time Lipstick

I know a lot of you love the old Moisture Whip lipsticks (I think they're great too) but I was surprised by how many positive reviews the Hydra Time lipsticks have received on the internet. I don't think I've ever actually tried one!

Moving to L'Oreal:

L'Oreal Eye Highlighter Line & Shadow Pencil

My Dollar Tree had just this one lime shade and lots of it (I think these were discontinued a while ago).

L'Oreal Mattique Oil Free Foundation in Coffee

Don't remember Mattique? That's ok, because according to the internet it went away in 2006. But there's a review on Makeup Alley that states that a single bottle was selling for $30+ on ebay back in 2009. Yikes! My Dollar Tree only had this foundation in the shade Coffee. But to be honest, even if they had a shade that would work for me, I wouldn't buy a liquid foundation this old...but that's just me.

Now for my haul:

I just had to try one of these NYC quads--I can post a review if you'd like to know my opinion of it after I've tried it (by the way, there's a safety seal on these quads, which is much appreciated). Also, how could I pass up NYC Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder for just $1? I've loved this powder for geeze, probably over a decade now.

One of the Dollar Trees in my area still has some of the older Sally Hansens (no Nail Prisms, Insta Dris or anything really great though). I decided to get this one because of the pretty orange microglitter:

Have you heard about these Donna Michelle Nail Art glitter sets?!?!

Donna Michelle Nail Art glitter sets

A few weeks ago, some of you reported spotting these at Dollar Tree and I finally found them (thanks for the heads-up, by the way!). They're teeny tiny jars of loose glitter that you can either add to nail polish or sprinkle on top of your nail after you've painted it.  I bought every single variety that my store offered. Check 'em out:

 Large hex glitter

Little balls (for a DIY Caviar manicure)

 Flakies!!

 Bar glitter

 Fine glitter

I am sort of freaking out about these glitters--$1 for eight little jars? They're kind of amazing. I'm going to dig through my polish stash for any boring shades that I can add glitter to, so expect to see some frankens in the near future!

Now for those L.A. Colors palettes I referred to at the beginning of this post:

L.A. Colors Bold Eyes Eyeshadow Palettes

There are six different palettes in this collection and my Dollar Tree had all six...so naturally I bought them. I will definitely do a full review of these, with swatches, in the near future.

And last but certainly not least, check out the new L.A. Colors Little Black Books that reader @JCRineer spotted at her local Dollar Tree:

L.A. Colors Little Black Book of Eyeshadows in Smoky

There are 15 shades in each of the Little Black Books and there are THREE different books to choose from. @JCRineer was nice enough to share some additional pics of the Natural palette (there's also a palette with greens and purples called Glam):

L.A. Colors Little Black Book of Eyeshadows in Natural

@JCRineer writes:
...I was super excited so I played with it as soon as I got it home and I was pleasantly surprised how pigmented and smooth the colors are (and pretty)!  They last quite a long time too. I've been wearing them for about 6 hours and they're holding up very well. They are very small but still, 15 colors for a dollar! And the small size is still perfect for a small round brush or a flat brush. I think I'm going to go get the other two! Very impressed for Dollar Tree makeup.

I'm sold! Check out how cute these are:

Whew! That's it for this Dollar Tree post but, as always, I would LOVE to hear what you've been spotting at your local Dollar Trees these days. Leave a comment and let us know!

And thanks so much, @JCRineer, for the fantastic sighting, pics and mini-review. So incredibly helpful!

  3. I have been going to Dollar Tree's so much lately, but all I have found at several locations near me is the green concealer stick from NYC.

  6. I actually bought some glitters that appear to be just like these from eBay a week ago. They're coming from China so I haven't received them yet but they really look the same, they had several different sets...fine glitter, flakies, the little balls, and hexagon shaped. I got 12 little bottles (same style, different colors)for around $2, so if you can't find them at your Dollar Tree, try eBay!

  7. Great haul! You found some good stuff that I didn't see at my usual Dollar Tree! I did see the nail glitters but I didn't know they had caviar! Now I'm definitely going back >_>

Thanks for including my review and pics! Glad I was able to help! I saw that deal and immediately thought of you and other thrifty beauties.

    2. I bought those bar glitters a while ago and mixed them in a blob of nail polish to test them and the colors ran in all of them except the irredescent/pearly looking ones. So I decided to not dump them into my bottle of clear nail polish. I have yet to try this but I am hoping to be able to sprinkle them on a wet nail and they will not run since they will not be saturated in polish. I was also able to get larger shapes like hearts and stars., too.

  11. Every time I look at a post I add something to my list! I have to search for some of those glitters along with one of those black books.

  12. The glitters look awesome! But, you may want to test the glitter to make sure they're solvent-resistent before adding a bunch of them to a bunch of nail polishes. If they're meant for sprinkling over, they might not be & then they would turn into a big glop.

    1. Oh definitely! But at this price, it's ok to experiment, even if I end up with a bottle of goop. Lol! ;) I'll just use a polish I don't like/never wear!

  14. So many glitter bottles! They look so pretty. Makes me want to play with glitter too, haha.

The L.A. Colors LBB looks super cute too! I like the natural shades.

I haven't seen much good stuff at my local Dollar Tree.

  15. Oh I wish my Dollar Tree were this cool. They still don't have the glitters or anything in make up except for 3 L.A colors polish and so really bright red lip sticks :( So happy you were able to find such cool stuff!

  16. I have the Glam version of the Little Black Book, it was (as I recall) the only one available in my Dollar Tree when I bought it (which had to be at least a month or so ago, before I came back to school). I love the colors in it, especially the greens. I can take a picture of it, if anyone wants one....

  17. My dollar general has every single l.a. color nail polish for a dollar each so I picked up two glitters and I tried out their top/base coat. I'm on day 3 on my mani with no chips so you can't beat that for a buck :)

  18. I was very reluctant to buy the little books the shadows were so tiny. The bold eyes are pretty good nice smooth colors.

  19. i got the same mineral eyes eyeshadow kit last year! I TREASURE MINE SO MUCH! I love using it over my eyeliner to smooth out the harshness every once in a while! ive regreted so much not getting another one! the colors are smooth and so easy to ccarry in my purse! thanks soo much for the post!

  20. I picked the glitters up last month. I was freaking out when I found them, and the cashier there was all like "omg Imma grab some right now!" I grabbed 2 of each glitters. The microbeads were the best find!

  21. Wow. My DollarTree does not have anything close to all this.

Great score(s). Good for you. :)

  22. 24. A few months ago I found an old l'oreal lipstick in the color mist at dollar tree,I tried googling it to find out more about it, but the most I could find was one makeup review on makeupalley from 2004,and they said they found it at big lots so it must have getting old then, so I'm super curious if you happen to know anything about this lipstick! Also, the packaging is translucent purple, and the lipstick is a weird silvery seafoamy metallic color.

  25. I bought those glitters (just like you, one of each!) from the Dollar Tree several weeks ago and nope, not solvent resistant. I had dreams of beautiful frankens, but they broke down and turned into little chunks in the nail polish (I used the big hex glitter in white and one of the fine glitters). I actually think the white "coating" came off of the glitter because I can see the clear hexs still in there and a bunch of tiny foil-y pieces. Oh well - can still used to nail art and the little balls work great for the "caviar" effect!

    ReplyDelete
  26. My goodness G. you must have had a blast buying all that! I bought one of the glitters but haven't tried them I am going to go find those pallets!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I picked up some of the glitters to send in a care package! Also bought the one with the stars and hearts and stuff for myself. I see a pretty epic Caribbean pedi for my trip next month!

    ReplyDelete
  28. excited for your reviews on LA color!!! :)

  29. Would love a review on the NYC shadows...

Wanted to mention I grabbed a 2pk of the CG eyeslick pencils several months ago, a beige and a hot pink, and was amazed at how nice they are. Not as good as the new Milani ones, but way better than most other creme shadow pencils I have tried from other brands. Work very well as shadow bases, I have also used them as liners.

Looks like I need to take a trip to DT. For those of you who cannot find anything good at yours, try a nearby city.. I have three here that never have anything good, but there is one in a smaller town ten minutes from me that has a completely different, and much better selection.

  30. I found all the glitters at my Dollar Tree today, and I also found Donna Michelle nail strips. I've had bad luck with the Sally Hansen ones, but I figured for $1 I might as well try these! I also got a Maybelline mineral liquid foundation for free because I had a coupon =)

  31. Sad to see the NYC Loose Powder at the Dollar Tree! It's my favorite to set my foundation and was SO cheap! Guess I'll go and stock up if they have some.

    ReplyDelete
  32. what's the difference between buying that foundation from the dollar tree and buying say a lipstick (maybelline hydratime I believe was discontinued in 06 as well)from the dollar tree? I'm not trying to be mean or rude, but that sentence (especially the "but that's just me" portion) sounded really smug/condescending. like I said i'm not trying to be rude or anything-I actually really like your blog, and I check up on it pretty much every other day. But as someone who picks up foundations from the dollar tree very regularly-especially since they usually have colors for my skintone-that portion of your entry threw me off. I mean if it's not rancid or hasn't turned, I don't mind taking the $1 chance that the foundation just might work for me.
I say all of these on the backdrop that the purpose of your blog is as a go-to resource for inexpensive/heavily-discounted makeup...I'm just saying. Just some constructive criticism. Hopefully I don't get my head chewed off.

    1. Hi missbele,

I would never chew anybody's head off for constructive criticism! :)

I think maybe you misinterpreted what I said in this blog post. Let me explain: I think that anybody who has read this blog for a long time knows that I'm in no way, shape or form a snob about makeup. I post about Big Lots finds, Kmart finds, Dollar Store finds, etc. all the time, and I treat the least expensive brands out there with as much respect as any high end brand. So when I said, "But that's just me" I was referring to the fact that since this foundation was discontinued in 2006, it's now six years old (or older if it was manufactured prior to the discontinuation date) I personally wouldn't chance it. I've mentioned many, many times here that I do not buy even BRAND NEW foundations without safety seals, unless I know the display was just put out and untouched. So if a foundation that's six+ years old and has perhaps been "tested" at some point when it was for sale at another location ends up at Dollar Tree, I personally wouldn't risk it, but because I said, "But that's just me" I was implying that I would never tell anyone else not to do it, nor would I judge if you did purchase/use this foundation.

As for the lipstick, first of all, I thought those were discontinued in 2009, not 2006, but I could very well be wrong. Either way, they're sealed products, which means less of a chance for them to have been "tested" when they were sitting in a drugstore a few years ago.

From what I can tell, dollar stores and Big Lots get these products after they've already been in drugstores and didn't sell. That overstock then gets sold to a distributor and it can sit in a warehouse for several years before it gets sold again to dollar stores or big lots. So...yeah, I just don't trust anything that's very old and doesn't have safety seal, but I think that if you looked around my blog for a bit, you'd see that I have reviewed and recommended many, many products that would be considered to be on the lowest end of the scale when it comes to beauty products. :)

I hope that clears things up a bit for you!

  33. I found a bunch of ELF when I went there today, including their brow kit, which wasn't there last Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Stopped by a local store (not the best for cosmetic selection, but closest to me) and they did have the little elf books.. picked up the one in natural. Not a fan of elf shadows normally, but these are actually nice (at least in swatching and playing with them a bit haven't worn them yet)... nowhere near as chalky and fall out city as most of the ones I have tried in the past. They are teeny, but still big enough to get a small/medium brush into. Might be really handy for travel. The entire palette is about 3x4".

  35. Went to the dollar tree near work on my lunch break and saw some similar items (I'm in Atlanta). I bought the color book (natural edition), the flakie looking nail glitter, a pair of elf eyelashes (they had a ton), and 2 LA colors polishes (mega watt, a pretty neutral and sparkling diamonds which has 2 sizes of silver glitter in a clear base). I might be spending my lunch at the dollar tree more often!

  36. Those glitters are solvent stable, yea! Into an empty seche bottle Imixed some of the gold with: sh hidden treasure,cg ick a body, orly so so godiva and watch it glitter.. it made a very interesting fall polish.....

  37. I saw those glitters at my Dollar Tree but made the mistake of not getting them at the time. I'm kicking myself for that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love the LA Colors eyeshadow. Back when Deals was still a thing around here I bought some of their circle trio palettes and the huge 50 pan eyeshadow palette and it's amazing how smooth and brightly pigmented they are for the price.

Looks like I need to pay Dollar Tree another visit sometime!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Have you tried the BOLD shadows? Or the little black book? I was tempted to buy them but even a dollar is too much to waste if its not a good product for me. I will be getting some cleaning supplies this week and was wondering if they were good pigmentation?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi! I bought the little black book today, and the bold shadows in "lively". I swatched them and took pics of the bold colors.I can send them to you if you like? They have the extra little color swirled in so for some it was like getting 2 colors! The pale ones didn't show as 2 different colors, and two were almost dupes for each other so for me, this palette was like getting 8 shadows! Not bad for a buck! I also got a covergirl lip liner for free with a coupon, and a revlon photoready under eye highlighter and eye primer at ocean state job lot for 4 dollars with a manufacturers coupon attached! I love your blog! Thanks for the great buys!

  41. Hi I also happened to find some really good makeup at my local Dollar Tree. Just last week I picked up 25 free L'Oreal Paris eyeliners. I had coupons that took $1 off any L'Oreal Paris eye product. Yesterday I got 6 eye shadows because I had 5 coupons that take $1 off any L'Oreal Paris eye shadow and one coupon that took a dollar of any L'Oreal Paris product. I also got four free liquid makeup bottle because I had a coupon that took a dollar of any Loreal Paris cosmetic face products. Weather the makeup is old or not I am definitely willing to take a chance. It was free so why not. By the way i love your blog
