Review: CoverGirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation|Base

I've said it a zillion times but in case you don't know, I'm not a liquid foundation gal. My oily skin prefers powder foundations and, in the past few years, only one new liquid foundation has seriously impressed me: CoverGirl NatureLuxe. So when CoverGirl recently released their newest CoverGirl & Olay product, Tone Rehab, I was excited to try it (especially since I really enjoy the CoverGirl & Olay blushes). I was sent two shades for review a while back, so now that I've been wearing nothing but this foundation for a few weeks straight, I'd love to share my thoughts with you.

CoverGirl Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation|Base in Buff Beige & Medium Beige
(retail: around $13.99 each, 1.0 oz)

From CoverGirl:

Before I get into the performance of this foundation, let's talk about the two shades I received:

I am a MAC NC20, and I normally gravitate toward the second-to-lightest shade in any given foundation range. But since there are 14 shades in the Tone Rehab range, that's not the case this time around. I'm LOVING the color Medium Beige for my skintone. It's a tad darker than my skintone but I actually like that during this time of year because I tend to look pale and pasty right after winter and going into the spring. Medium Beige gives me that extra little kick of color that I crave, but if your skin is what I like to describe as a "pale NC20" then definitely go for Buff Beige. When I wear Buff Beige, it's almost like I'm wearing no color at all--it blends perfectly into my natural skintone.

So now let's take a look at my before-and-afters:

Bare skin (moisturizer only)

In this "before" picture of my cheek, I'm not wearing anything other than moisturizer. No concealer or primer. As you can see, I have fine lines under my eyes, large pores near my nose, darkness under my eyes, redness on my cheeks and old acne scars. In other words, my skin is FAR from perfect.

After applying CoverGirl Tone Rehab in Medium Beige with my fingers
(no setting powder)

In this absolutely un-retouched "after" pic (FYI, I have never, ever retouched an "after" pic or any pic on this blog for that matter. I may do color-correcting for things like nail polish if the color is not accurate, but that's it), you can see that Tone Rehab in Medium Beige gives my skin an almost airbrushed quality (hard to achieve when you're 41, let me assure you). It gives my skin a very smooth-looking appearance, it minimizes my pores, and it evens out the redness. It doesn't really do anything for the darkness under my eyes (to be fair, NO foundation takes care of that for me--I must use a separate concealer), but it does seem to "plump up" the fine lines around my eye area a bit.

Texture, coverage and blendability: this foundation reminds me of NatureLuxe in that it's very silky and creamy and super easy to blend. It's not a runny liquid, but it's not a super-thick cream either. I would consider the coverage light-to-medium. If you prefer a lighter foundation, I think you could apply this sparingly and be very pleased with it. If you prefer medium-to-full coverage (like me) then you might need to build a bit to your liking. I find that one application is good for the non-problem areas of my face, but I do need to go over the problem areas of my face and do some additional spot applications before I'm happy with the coverage. The good thing is that this never seems to get cakey or feel heavy, no matter how much I apply. AND, it doesn't pool up in my larger pores, which is something that makes me very happy.

Finish: I find that this foundation provides a very natural-looking finish, but not in a tinted moisturizer type of way. It has much more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, but yet it doesn't make me feel like I'm wearing a lot of makeup. I can't really describe it, but I'd say my skin looks luminous and almost dewy when I wear this. It's definitely not a matte foundation but it does not contain any sparkle or shimmer either.

Staying power: When I first saw that this was a 2-in-1 foundation, I assumed that meant it was a foundation and PRIMER, not foundation and serum. Even though I was wrong, this foundation really surprised me because it FEELS like there's a built-in primer here. I have very oily skin, and I have heard that people with dry skin were loving this foundation. Well, let me tell you that this oily-skinned gal loves it too. I've been putting this on at 6AM every morning, and by 6PM my skin still looks smooth and even and my blush is still in place! I can seriously go the entire day and only feel the need to powder my nose at around noon. I really can't stress this enough: the staying power of this product has been incredible for me. Oh! I should add that I've been using my CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Pressed Powder that I reviewed here on top of this foundation (applied lightly with a big, fluffy powder brush) and that combo has been working very well for me.

Fragrance: If you like the fragrance of Olay skincare, you'll probably like the fragrance of this foundation as well. It doesn't have the signature CoverGirl scent that you find in the CoverGirl Clean Makeup line--it smells sweet and clean and a lot like Olay moisturizers.

FINAL VERDICT: For me, this foundation absolutely lives up to all of its claims. Not only does it make my skin's texture look smoother, but it also evens out the redness, plumps up my fine lines and minimizes my pores. And on top of all that, it lasts all day on my face, despite the fact that I have very oily skin. I only need to powder my nose once during the day and I'm good to go. My makeup stays in place for a good 12 hours, no problem. I'm seriously impressed with CoverGirl Tone Rehab, and I think that if you can find a shade that works for you, you might enjoy it as well.  I know that $13.99 may seem a little steep for a drugstore foundation, but the fact that you're really getting a foundation and serum in one bottle makes the price more justifiable to me (plus, as you know, CoverGirl products often go on sale at the drugstores). I say give it a shot, and even if it does not work for you, you can easily get your money back. Per the CoverGirl website:  "...we're so sure that you'll love COVERGIRL & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation, that if you're not satisfied with the results, we'll refund your money." Have you already tried CoverGirl Tone Rehab? If so, I'd love to hear what you think of it, and if not, I'd love to hear if you think this might be a good fit for your particular skin type.

  3. I love anything that comes with a pump, so bonus points for Cover Girl to offer that! I like the smell of Olay, my only concern is that stuff with strong scents usually breaks me out....i wonder how this will be...thanks for sharing!

    1. The pump is awesome. :) I'm not particularly sensitive to fragrances, so for what it's worth, it hasn't broken me out one bit. I hope it works for you if you try it, hun!

  4. I'm impressed. Never thought this product is so highly pigmented.

    1. It actually isn't SUPER pigmented, but it magically smooths and evens out my skintone while making my skin look luminous at the same time. So I guess that makes it LOOK super pigmented, but it's actually a sheer-to-medium coverage foundation, I would say. The good thing is that you can build for more coverage without it getting cakey. Hope that helps!

  7. I'm always very reluctant to try anything Cover Girl, because I tried a foundation YEARS ago and it broke me out horribly. But I'm trying to branch out and try foundation. Maybe I'll give this a try. If anyone HAS had breakouts, please let me know.

  16. The last covergirl foundation I tried was the simply ageless foundation... which was horrible for me, wwaaayy too greasy, it was like I put night cream on my face. Have you ever tried that one?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know, I never tried the foundation from that line, but I like the concealer and blushes a lot. However, I can understand what you mean--they have a thicker consistency so the foundation could be a bit much if you have oily skin. I think since this is more of a creamy liquid, it might work better for you. It works extremely well for me, and I have super oily skin. Hope that helps!

  17. Very tempting.... just one more test for me to buy (or not) a foundation: does it transfer?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it does. That's not a deal-breaker for me personally, because *all* foundations transfer when it comes to my oily skin. lol. I can minimize it with an oil-control powder, but it does transfer more than say, Revlon ColorStay or any of the other long-wear foundations I've used in the past. Hope that helps!

  22. I love CG's foundations...before this I love the aqua one and I have also pre-ordered this rehab one last year because I was moving back to my home country, Thailand. Now I almost never touch the rehab one only because I'm soooooo afraid I would use it up. We don't have CG here in Thailand and I LOVE this foundation. I'm keeping it for when I want a more polished natural look.

  25. Looks promising. I'm a NW 20 so I wonder which color I should try. I have tried tons of liquid, powder,TM & cream foundations for my oily skin. I have found some work others not so much. I will have to try when I'm out of what I'm using now.

  27. I just picked this up from Ulta! Can't wait to try it. I don't use foundations (bare minerals is my go to) but I want to give this a try. I just hope the shade I got works for me.

  28. I've been loving this as well! I got it when it first came out, and it definitely does all it says. My skin looks smoother, and evened out all the redness. However, like u my skin is oily, so I dont wear it every day.

  29. I have oily skin as well. I'll put this on my list to try if I end up unhappy with my L'Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Smooth Souffle. Excellent review!

  30. No need to be modest, your skin looks great without makeup! I think my fine lines are comparable and I am only 23.

  31. My sister loves this one, but I didn't really take her opinion seriously, since she's not really into makeup that much. Now I know it really was that good! lol I'll have to pick this up sometime too, but first I just got thebalm tinted moisturizer and will use that through the summer.

  34. I bought this on Monday and I'm loving it so far. I have combination skin, and now that i bought it and read the reviews, most say to stay away from it if you have oily skin. I don't have this problem though so it's perfect!

    1. "most say to stay away from it if you have oily skin."...

I have combination skin as well, and can be really oily.. I love it. So creamy and smooth, it just feels good on and that feeling lasts all day..and I have no problem with it making me oily.

  35. I love your review! And I am in awe of this product. I tend to use only CoverGirl products because my skin is very dry and so sensitive just about everything seems to cause me some kind of irritation. I was like you though in that I stuck to powders mainly because they didn't clog my pores too much (clogged pores for me meant skin irritation). However I have this nasty habit of picking bumps on my face and neck and over the last year or so that's caused some serious discoloration mainly on my neck. I tried EVERYTHING to either cover or get rid of the spots (from Ambi cream to home remedies) but nothing was working well.

On top of that I'm African American with a medium skin tone so most concealers were far too light for me while concealer brands that were geared toward African Americans (including CoverGirls Queen collection) were too dark. So I was at my grocery store one day when this girl who was shopping too(I point out that shes white only for the sake of the story) recommended that I try tone rehab, she let me try a bit of hers just to see how it felt (obviously it wasn't my shade) and I liked it but I was skeptical because of the difficult time I had had matching in the past. So I got a shade that matched the pressed powder I use (145 Warm Beige, and 155 Soft Honey in the summer) and went home to try it and was sorely disappointed because it was seriously too light, I looked like a geisha (not joking, I wish I had a picture). Still I liked the way it felt so I decided to give another shade a try and this time went way darker than what I thought I needed (160 Classic Tan). I got it right before my cousins wedding because I did NOT want the dark spots to show in the pictures and it worked PHENOMENALLY! Not only did it, along with the pressed powder, completely cover the spots but it didn't look or feel cakey at all! I've been using it daily for about the past 4 or 5 weeks and I've noticed that the spots are actually significantly faded to the point where I feel comfortable not wearing make up again. Also, the bumps that were causing me to pick at my skin (most likely an irritation of some sort) are appearing less and less frequently and my jawline and neck finally feel smooth again. I love, love, love this product. It seems like the common advice for it though is to go a few shades darker than what you think you need (I think the shades are more fine tuned and varied than other CG products but that works for me perfectly). I know this was long, but I had to share that for all the ladies who suffer with skin problems like me (btw skin problems aren't limited to acne, I've never had acme in my life but still have difficult skin). Hope it helps whoever bothers to read it through!
