Review: New Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo

Longtime readers of this blog know that I fancy myself as a bit of a dry shampoo connoisseur. I've reviewed many drugstore dry shampoos over the years from brands such as TRESemme, Batiste, got2b, Psssst and Salon Grafix (just do a search if you'd like to see them).

Since I have oily hair, oily skin and side-swept bangs, dry shampoos really come in handy for me and I use them probably once or twice a week. Since my bangs rest on my forehead and my skin is oily, that means I can never go more than 24 hours before my bangs start to look stringy and greasy.

Last year at around this time, I reviewed the then-new Suave Dry Shampoo and today I'd like to show you the newest dry shampoo from Sauve, Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo, which was given to me recently for review.

The above pic was taken about 48 hours after washing my hair. I pulled back the top layer of my bangs to reveal the greasy, stringy hair underneath (this is the hair that rests on my forehead).

The above photo was taken after immediately after applying Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo as directed. I held the can 8-10 inches away from my hair and sprayed directly onto my oily roots. I did NOT work the product in with my fingers or a comb before I took the above photo.

NOTE: It may appear that this product leaves a slight white cast behind, but it actually does NOT. This product makes the hair look matte (before you work it in) but there is NO white cast and I will prove that to you a little later in this post.

I told you that I would prove to you that this product does not leave a white cast behind, so now I'd like to show you what happens when I spray this product onto a dark brown t-shirt:

It's difficult to tell but if you look closely, you'll notice that some of the sheen on the shirt in the first photo is gone. In other words, this product gives my t-shirt a slight matte finish. But honestly, when I look at my shirt after applying this product, it looks NO different to my naked eye than before I applied the product. There's no white residue at all. (I've even tried this on a black t-shirt and the results were the same as above.)

I am very pleased with the performance of this product, for a variety of reasons. First, I like that it doesn't leave a white cast behind, which can be problematic if you have darker hair. I also like that, after I work the product in with my fingers and comb my hair into place, the shine is restored to my hair and it doesn't leave a matte finish behind. I find the fragrance of this product to be fresh, clean and pleasant (I don't like it as much as the grapefruit scent of the original Suave Dry Shampoo, but if you don't care for the scent of grapefruit, you'll be happy to know that this product smells fresh and clean with no heavy fruity or floral notes). To my nose, it smells more like a hairspray, but sort of a higher-end hairspray, if that makes sense.

My only complaint about this product is that, on the days when my hair is very oily, it doesn't absorb every last bit of oil on the first try. The good thing is that I can spray more of this product into my hair if needed, and it doesn't become cakey or overly-powdery. Just be sure to work it in with your fingers and then comb or brush your hair afterward and you should be good to go.

FINAL VERDICT: Compared to the original Suave Dry Shampoo, I think the new Keratin Infusion version has about the same level of oil absorbancy, but it leaves my hair a tiny bit more shiny than the original. In terms of added volume, I find it to be equal to the original. My hair has a little bit more "oomph" to it after I use this product, and it gives it some nice added texture without any heaviness. If you like the original Suave Dry Shampoo, I'm willing to bet you'll enjoy this version as well, and if you didn't like the grapefruit scent of the original, you'll probably find this a welcomed alternative. But just like the original, you might require a second application if your hair is extremely oily, so just be prepared for that. All in all, I think this is a nice, affordable option in the world of drugstore dry shampoos and I've enjoyed using it these past few weeks. Considering that the retail price of this product is around $3.50, I will definitely make a purchase when I run out--the value makes it hard for me to pass up considering how often I use dry shampoos.
