My purple lipstick love is quickly turning into a fetish. This baby got the whole ball rolling, but when I saw Violet Frenzy in the new Expressionists collection, I just had to have it.
Sidenote: is it just me or can you keep up with all the new Revlon collections at the drugstores right now? Between Edgy Elegance, Expressionists, Masquerade, Grit & Grandeur, etc., I feel like I'm constantly getting them all confused with each other (not that that's a bad thing, mind you!).
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Violet Frenzy
(retail: around $8)
Even though there are tiny bits of light-reflective particles in this lipstick, on the skin, you don't see sparkle/glitter--it really just lends a vibrancy to the overall color:
I don't really even want to show you this first pic of me wearing Violet Frenzy because the color is WAY off. But I'm showing it to you anyway because I think you can really see the finish in this photo:
Purples are incredibly difficult for my camera to capture, so you would not BELIEVE the lengths I went to to get the following photo (which is as accurate as I can get in terms of the color I see on my lips):
I had to stand in my bathtub and tippy-toe near the window and hold the camera just so in order to get this shot. I tried every form of light and flash and lighbulb combination I could think of, and finally I got the shot in my bathtub of all places.
There's a beautiful blue undertone to this lip color that really comes out when you apply it to your lips. The color is a BIT darker in person than what you see above, but I think this photo really captures the blue in this shade.
So how does Revlon Violet Frenzy compare to Maybelline Amethyst Ablaze? Well, they are similar, but there are a few big differences.
Number one: to put it simply, Violet Frenzy is more of a plum-purple, while Amethyst Ablaze is more of a magenta-purple:
Number two: texture. If you're on the fence, your choice could come down to whether you prefer the texture of ColorSensational lipsticks or Super Lustrous lipsticks.
Number three: wearability. In my opinion, both shades are sheer but buildable, but the sheerness of Violet Frenzy imparts almost a stain-like look to my lips when applied lightly. Since there's a plum undertone to this purple, I feel like, for my coloring (MAC NC20), Violet Frenzy is a tad more wearable for me on a day-to-day basis, whereas Amethyst Ablaze is more of a WOW type of shade that I'd prefer to wear at night.
I think that Violet Frenzy is a great daytime purple while Amethyst Ablaze is a great nighttime purple. Do you need both? I'd say yes but remember, I'm currently obsessed with purple lipsticks.
Do you own Revlon Violet Frenzy and/or Maybellline Amethyst Ablaze? What do you think of them?
If you want to try an intense purple lipstick, Wet n Wild's "Vamp it Up" is perfect. It's one of my favorites :)
ReplyDeleteI really like that you are being more daring with your lipstick colors. The purple really suits you. I can see you wearing it with some nice liquid liner and big vampy lashes!
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous shades!!! I am obcessed with purple lippies too! :) You are making me want to run out to the drugstore!
ReplyDeleteI am OBSESSED with purple lipsticks, I have been for about 3 years now. All Revlon's "violet" or "plum" tones, if they have that in the name, I MUST buy. I also have a really nice round lipstick from NYX called Medusa, and the Covergirl Lip Perfection in Fusion. Both are darn awesome purples.
ReplyDeleteJust became obsessed with purple lipstick after picking up Maybelline Colorsensational Lipstick in Yummy Plummy on clearance for 74 cents! It's gorgeous and the perfect complement to Milani Baked Blush in Berry Amore!
ReplyDeleteI recently got Amethyst Ablaze after reading your review and I absolutely LOVE it. Now I might have to try to find this one too on a good sale.
ReplyDeleteI just put on my new revlon nail polish "Fierce" and it looks exactly like the color of the lipstick in the tube. It's from one of the new Revlon collection's too. The one with Halley Berry on the display.
ReplyDeleteThis would be the perfect lip color for Fall/Winter. I don't own it but I guess I might just have to pick it up :)
ReplyDeletePurple lipsticks are my favorite as well, love them. But I dont really like the frosty/pearl finish, they just don't look good on me for some reason, but I may have to try this anyway because it looks pretty.
ReplyDeletemy favorite Revlon purple is called Berry Haute , maybe you know the one I'm talking about.
Do you happen to have any recommendations for creme finish purples/mauves/plums, I've been wanting more for fall.
I am going to look for this color G. so far I havent found any of the LE displays for Revlon tho'
ReplyDeleteBoo hiss!!
I agree, my purple lipgloss/lipstick kick is going to get out of control. It started off with NYX's power and castle, MAC's purple lipgloss from the Disney Villain's collection, then Illamasqua's Fierce and now these two. smh And let's not forget Revlon Berry Haute
ReplyDelete*sigh* I hate living in a small town. There are only two choices here for makeup- Walmart and an indie drug store with almost nothing in makeup. So I never get to see the seasonal or limited editions that companies put out!
ReplyDeleteBoth of those purples look awesome- I love purple lipstick, but like you I suspect that the 'Violet Frenzy' looks to be the more acceptable color for everyday use.
I have Amethyst Ablaze. I heart it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful shade. I have to get this lipstick. Revlon was the first brand I ever bought. I also love purple lipsticks. I just love lipstick period.
ReplyDeleteCan't find this one yet! Almost bought the Maybelline one. I went to 5 different drug stores and Ulta and no luck on this revlon one :(
ReplyDeleteWhere did you purchase this lipstick G?
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm I think I shouldn't have gotten this one. Not because is a bad lipstick, it is good and very pretty, but it is awfully similar to #625 Iced Amethyst, also by Revlon. Violet Frenzy is a tini tiny bit more purple (and less pigmented), but on my lips, I can not see a difference. Ugh
ReplyDeleteThanks for your efforts. I hurts to be beautiful!I'm just getting up my nerve to try one of these shades..
ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite is Violet Light, Revlon 11, or 26. Impossible to find. Just found 1 tube on eBay for $20 !
