The Wednesday Question

I'd like to talk primers today. Specifically, eyeshadow primers. I'm sure you've tried and loved one of The Big Two (Urban Decay Primer Potion and Too Faced Shadow Insurance), but do you have any favorite affordable eyeshadow primers (or products you like to use as primer)?

What's your favorite affordable eyeshadow primer?

I continue to love the Jesse's Girl eyeshadow primer, and I also have had very good luck with the Palladio eyehshadow primer, as well as as the Sally Hansen Carmindy primer. I also enjoy using jumbo eye pencils like ones from NYX, Palladio and Wet n Wild in place of primer from time to time. How about you? Got an inexpensive trick to keep shadow in place all day? Tell us, please!

  1. The plain old ELF eyeshadow primer works really well. Even on a heavily made up smoky eye. I haven't tried the ELF mineral one but i've read it's even better.

  2. Cheap? UDPP samples. Honestly, I've never used primer for eye shadow before and if I can continue getting Urban Decay samples I'll keep using them!

  3. I've never ever used an eyeshadow primer. I always use concealer to even things out. I suppose my shadow does last for a decent amount of time though.

  4. my go to is definitely my elf eyelid primer. I tried hard candy eye primer but it creases.

  5. i've used Amphigory Cosmetics primer for a few years (i think it is/was called SensationalEyes?). I find that the more liquid-y bases don't work so great on me, so the drier, pastey consistency of it was awesome.
Alas, I don't see it on their website anymore, which is very unfortunate because i'm almost out!

  6. The one I use is by Jordana. It works just as well as Urban Decay, even seems to have the same consistency, but it's only $1.25

  7. Maybelline used to make this 'Cool Eyes' cream shadow in a little tube that came in a champagne color...I used every little bit of that because whatever you put on top of it looked like you just put it on 10-12 hours later. When they stopped making that I moved on to a similar Mary Kay product and used it the same way. Now I'm using a discontinued Avon to do the job.

As far as all-over face primer, someone (Probably on MUA) tipped me that Monistat Chafing-Relief Powder Gel makes a great primer. (This has no medication in it, its not like the medical-line Monistat products). Its about $7 for a 1.5 oz tube and a pea sized amount is about all you need. Works great!

  8. I have used Palladio (and like it a lot) and the ELF one (like it almost as much as UDPP). :)

  9. It has to be the new NYX HD primer, so awesome! For $7, it's about as close to UDPP as one can get ;)

  10. Clinique Touch Base for eyes works well, but at 14 bucks a pop it shouldn't dry out so quickly in a closed container. Lately I've been using Loreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base. Seems to do the job pretty well.

  11. I love the ELF Mineral Eye Shadow Primer, it is hg for me and it only costs $3. The new NYX HD Eye Shadow Primer is also really great for around $7. I have tried Urban Decay Primer Potion but I still prefer ELF.

  12. I like Sephora's "glitter primer" (nude color, comes in a small pot) because it's very sticky and really makes shadows pop, but on my oily lids it creases unless I use UDPP under it. :(

  13. I like Palladio eyeshadow primer. But id like to try the new NYX HD primer. Now that ive heard a few people say its good i might order some with my next Ulta or Cherry Culture order. Has anyone tried the NYX HD foundation?

  14. *Long story short - Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance is my fav.*
I like all the primers mentioned (UDPP, TFSI, Palladio) but have not tried elf's yet (should I try the studio version?). I really like TFSI because its in a tube and I don't feel cheated because with the Palladio and UDPP I have to dig around in the tube like a junkie. Plus once I think the tube is empty, I can just cut it open and scrape it into a jar. I *kinda* want to try the NYX primer in the jar but I don't really like putting my finger in a jar (I'm picky!)

  15. I use MAC paint pot everyday under my eye shadow and it lasts all day. I know it isn't cheap but I love it. I've tried UDPP and TFSI and they never work for me! My cheap version that I also love is the NYX eye shadow sticks.

  16. Since this one isn't any more expensive than UD or TF, I'll throw in my ultimate favorite primer: Laura Geller's Spackle Eye Primer. Her mini pot is $10. This was my first primer and I still love it the best.

  17. e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer is my HG primer. I have loved Clinique Touch Base in the past but for cost and staying power, e.l.f. reigns supreme!

  18. The Maybelline concealer stick. I use this in cheerleading competitions and bright shadows stay vibrant and crease-free through the hours of sweat and exaggerated facial expressions O.O

  19. I have tried all three ELF primers and was disappointed with the mineral one and especially the studio one. They both creased like crazy within an hour. However, the one from the one dollar line works fantastic! When I don't use that one, I'll use UDPP in Sin which works great for a natural look.

  20. I've used UDPP but the tube dried out too quickly, so I haven't repurchased it. I'm using up a tube of Lumene eyeshadow primer, which I'm really like, but sadly CVS doesn't carry it anymore. Based on your raves, I bought the Jesse's Girl primer, which is great too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm also using up a tube of Lumene primer, and like it a bunch. After that, I'm moving on to my half-empty TFSI. I'll probably keep buying the TFSI because it does work. I like my primers in a squeeze tube for sanitary reasons. I'm also excited about the new TFSI candlelight.

  22. i use elf primer too, for $1 it works well enough for me.

  23. just bought the $3 e.l.f. mineral primer, and so far, no luck! it keeps things in place for a few hours longer than no base, but then creases horribly before the end of the workday.

am nearly out of a discontinued Fyrinnae primer that i suspect was made to dupe UDPP as it very much resembles it (though it works even better for me).

just got a sample-size UDPP with an eyeshadow palette i bought, and i like it but it sometimes gets flaky for me and also seems to irritate my lower lid a little....very odd. i want to try NYX (primer not pencil) and Palladio next, and would consider buying TFSI since you can get at the product more easily than with UDPP (i refuse to buy into that rig).

occasionally i use cream shadows (Revlon, HiP, etc) as a base. HiP works decently but Revlon is often creasey too.

  24. the only eye primer i have ever used is from ELF it was either $1 or $3 and it works beautifully! ive never had the need to try more expensive brands!

  25. Formulation wise, eye primer is the same as a matte finish foundation or concealer. I usually use Almay bright eyes eye base + concealer. I tested it against my UDPP and the performance was the same.

  26. I swear by Loreal Decrease! Couldn't live without it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I use the ELF mineral primer! That's the only one I've ever used so I can't compare it to others, but it gets the job done so what else could I ask for? Perfect for my strict budget.

  28. Jordana eyeshadow primer is awesome. It's hard to believe that this primer only cost $1.

  29. elf mineral eye primer works ok for me too ^ ^

  30. You know what, I would have to say my NYX shadow base, MAC MSF Natural and UD Primer Potion combo (in that order) is the best primer I have tried. It's seriously fade and crease proof!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have UDPP, and I honestly can't see any difference between it and my ELF mineral primer. I've used concealers as primer and I like those, the L'Oreal HIP paints are nice, and I'm trying out a Pixi Eye Primer that I got off AllCosmeticsWholesale.com.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have the ELF dollar primer and I have to say it's ok. It makes my shadow pop more, but as for creasing it usually only last through half my day. I would have to say my favorite would have to be Palladio herbal primer. It lasted through a full day of working out on my ranch, even stayed put when i got soaked.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i used to love my urban decay primer potion, until the company disclosed that it isn't 100% vegan (after at first stating that it was). i'm now using the elf mineral primer and i love it!

  34. Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel. It's really inexpensive for the amount you get and it works wonders as an eyeshadow primer as well as a regular foundation primer. I also like to use Detrivore's eyeshadow primer-- a little sticky, a little shimmery, and doesn't take much (http://www.detrivorecosmetics.com/primer.html). And, of course, NYX jumbo pencils :D!

  35. I actually really like the Victoria's Secret "VS Pro Lasting FX Eyeshadow Primer". It's about $12 and you only need the tiniest amount to cover each eyelid :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like the $1 elf eyeshadow primer. :D

I don't find it to be quite as good as UDPP or last quite as long, but it's really close, and costs a heck of a lot less.

  37. I like the $1 dollar elf primer. It consistently works for me and no matter what eyeshadow I am wearing over it, people(mostly strangers)are always complimenting me on my eye makeup. I have even fallen asleep for a couple hours and woke up and my eye makeup still stayed on. So, it is a winner for me.

  38. When I use eyeshadow primer (which is not often), I just use concealer. It works well for me, but my lids aren't very oily. I also have a Clinique cream concealer (a precursor to Touch Base, I think) from a few years ago that I got as a GWP. The color is all wrong for use as a concealer on my dark skin, but it's great at holding onto shadows . . . and cost me nothing! Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Another vote for Monistat anti chafing gel! I also use it as primer on blemishes to get concealer to stick.

    Good for running too, iykwim.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The new NYX HD eye primer is every bit as good as UDPP in my experience and it's less than half the price! I have oily lids and I wear it sometimes when I'm not even wearing shadow because it keeps my lids matte all day (& night!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I've only used the Too Faced Shadow Insurance... I got a sample-sized tube from Sephora a couple years ago, and have been hooked ever since. The tube lasts FOR-EV-ER, so I don't mind spending the $18 on it. It may not be inexpensive, but you definitely get your money's worth out of it! I'd be interested to try the ELF primer, though!

    ReplyDelete
  42. TFSI is my favorite primer and 1 tube last me 13 to 14 months. You know how much I wear makeup, so that's pretty impressive.

That said, there are some inexpensive indie primers I like:
    Sobe Botanicals eye primer
    Concrete Minerals eye primer
    Detrivore eye primer

I'm pretty sure those three are under $10.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Concrete Minerals Electric Eye Primer - HG - hands down. Oddly enough, more is more for me (rather than 'less is more'). I check my eye makeup CONSTANTLY and am AMAZED every time! It stays for 10+ hours! Full disclosure: the only other 'primers' I've tried are concealer set with powder, oil-absorbing powders and Monistat. Although the Monistat doesn't work on my lids, it's an AWESOME face primer (and again, more is more, in my case) - and WAY cheaper than primers offered by cosmetics companies. (Hee hee - my verification word is 'unpro'. SOOO appropriate!)
