Scherer (makers of CQ, Petites and Chameleon nail polish) goes out of business

A very sad day in the world of drugstore nail polish, my friends. I just received word from my pal Jess of the fabulous nail blog, Polish Insomniac, that Scherer Cosmetics has officially closed its doors. If you click on the parent company link listed on the Scherer LinkedIn page, you'll find that the link is dead. And if you click on the CQ Cosmetics homepage, you'll also find that website is dead as well.

For those unfamiliar, Scherer makes CQ polishes, Chameleon polishes (duocromes), Petites polishes, Petites Color Fever polishes and Pretty Nails Instant Polish Remover. All of the lines I just mentioned are sold at Rite Aid stores (and perhaps elsewhere in your area), so if you like any of these affordable drugstore polishes (they retail from between $1.99 and $3.99 each), get them while you can.

I was just at my Rite Aid yesterday and didn't notice anything on clearance (yet) but sometimes when a brand goes under, they'll go on deep clearance AND the might start showing up at Dollar Tree, Big Lots, etc.

I've put together a little list, with photos, of some of my favorite CQ polishes, in case you're new to the brand and want to grab some while you still can. I would LOVE if you'd share your favorites in the comments, so we can all grab them before they're gone for good.

First, from the Chameleon line:

 Nucleus

From the Petites Color Fever line:

24K Gold

CQ was doing textured polishes long before it was a "thing."

Pink Diamond (over a pink creme)

Vintage Gray

Still one of my favorite greiges of all time...

From the CQ line:

 Rustic Dream

Rustic Dream is still one of the prettiest duochromes I own. I'm really sad to see this one go. There's rust, gold and pink to this one (so technically a multi-chrome).

 Slate

I also did a dupe comparison post of the Petites shade Utopia here (compared to Wet n Wild Teal of Fortune and Jesse's Girl Glee). It's a lovely teal duochrome that I also recommend.

Again, if you'd like to share some of YOUR favorite CQ, Chameleon, Petites or Petites Color Fever shades in the comments (and why they're your favorites) I would much appreciate it, so that we can all stock up before they're gone forever.

Thanks again, Jess, for the heads-up about this. I really appreciate it. I'm so incredibly sad to see this company, and all of its wonderful products, leave us forever.

  1. To be honest, I personally can't be too sad because I've never heard of any of these brands of polish! We have never had a Rite Aid in or near Cincinnati, and I've never seen these anywhere else, not even my Big Lots. Still, I can sympathize with those of you that have enjoyed this brand. It always sucks when something you like (and is affordable) gets discontinued and/or gets pulled from production. :(

    1. We used to have a Rite Aid in Price Hill but it went out years ago. You can sometimes find petites at Dollar Tree or Family dollar. Our Dollar Tree just got the sinful Colors in this week.

  2. How sad! I love these little drugstore polishes.
    My faves are:
    Chameleon Corona
CQ Golden Green and Tahitian Green (Rustic Dream is a fave of mine too)
    Petites Utopia and Wicked

  3. What a bummer :( I only have petites color fever in black diamond and I love it! But I think sally Hansen has a dupe for it in their gem crush line. I will have to find pink diamond! Soooo gorgeous!

  4. This is so sad. This company had some of the best (and most overlooked) drugstore polishes. I'll definitely be looking for closeouts on this one.

Makes me wish I could buy the company, leave the manufacturing alone, and just work on increasing sales. Really, the thing they needed most was brand recognition.

  5. My fav is 24k gold from Petites. I have 4 back ups because its the perfect gold when you need it. So sad!

  6. I have a bunch of polishes from all three lines. Some faves are Petites' Black Diamond and Candy Green, and CQ's Golden Green. I'm going to have to look for Rustic Dream; I like the look of that.

  7. I'm so sad! I've always wanted Petite Vintage, but never found one without separation in it. :(

Everyone, get CQ Golden Green while you still can! It's a dupe of Butter London Wallis!

  8. Did they also make lipsticks? I ask because a few years ago I purchased a lipstick from Walmart, the brand (I believe) was CQ! I remember thinking how much I loved the lipstick, the color, the texture, but not seeing anymore on the shelf made me think it may have been a discontinued brand! Those polishes look pretty, Vintage Gray is definitively something I would wear on my nails on a daily basis!

  9. I picked up a bunch of these this week on clearance. Had no idea the company was going under I just assumed they were older polishes.

  10. I don't think we had this brand in Canada, so I can't empathize but they look like they made great polishes (those duochromes!) Sad to see them go.

  12. Soo sad! I count Charmeleon polishes as the ones that started my nail polish love. I loved the colors but back then they barely lasted a day on me and I never came back to the brand. I'll have to watch out for sales!

  13. I'm so sad to hear that an company that makes arfordable polish is going under. I've eyed Rustic Dream before, I will definitely be picking it up now. There was a Petites shimmery seafoam green that I threw away as a teenager because I used it up. I still think about that color and don't have anything like in my huge stash.

  14. This makes me so sad! I've been buying Petites since they were .99! Their duochromes are hit and miss. Some bottles will have a great duochrome color, others of the same color, but different lots, will dry without the color effect, like Idyllic. The one I have dries with none of the gold shimmer I've seen in swatches. I guess I'll have to hit up Rite Aid and grab a few backups of Golden Green and Rustic Dream.

I think Walmart sells regular Petites, but not the CQ or Chameleons, for those that don't have a Rite Aid.

  15. This polish brand really must have been asleep at the wheel to go under when sales of polish have exploded in the past few years.

    1. Well they are fairly hard to come by, and they don't really have collections, just core. They're just kind of there.

  19. This is very sad news. I have always liked Scherer's polishes - especially the Petites Color Fever line. For those of you that aren't in an area with a Rite Aid you should check your WalMart, I have picked up some of the Petites polishes at my local WalMart.

  20. These were (generally) low-quality but SUPER CUTE and trendy polishes. I'm guessing they weren't too great in the promotion and marketing dept.. I always found these at the hair dye aisle at my local Rite Aid, instead of the actual makeup section. Sad to see these go.. I wanted to try more of their other duochromes, no matter how flaky and streaky they were.

  22. Sad! I was just googling petites silver polish because I've had a bottle for years that is by far my favorite nail polish ever. Dries fast, one coat, great silver. I guess I better make this tiny little bottle last...

  24. Their clear coat is SO shiny! I love it. It gives your polish a wet look.

  25. Grrrr crap cakes...I was at target getting an essie color and then I started wondering "hmm...whats the name of that dog gone brand of polish walmart stopped selling" it bugged me all that evening and all through the next day. Even Walmart didn't know what I was talking about via email lol yes I actually emailed them! Then while watching survivor it hit me like a ton of bricks and so I was like "PETITES!" and went on the search...and then found this post.....yea....and it's Thanksgiving tomorrow lol. That's okay though I have a gel nail system, but sometimes it's nice to just do your nails without having to do the extra steps and setting up stuff before doing it. Thanks for the post but dang this is sad because the manufacturer was slept on and the free U.S. shipping was NICE. :'( They need to come back!

  26. I don't know the specific name but i have CQ 231 (it's a light blue, sky blue-ish color) and i love it. Kind of sad that the company went out of business :(

  27. We are very upset that PETITE nail polish is no longer being sold :( I went to Rite-Aid yesterday to buy a couple bottles - and was told they do not carry it anymore. I was shocked !

  28. I'll miss Petites a lot. CQ, too. They had some wonderful polishes as good as many a salon brand.
    That's for sure!!!

  29. I was shocked to hear they went under. I LOVED the Raspberry Rush color & never got the chance to get more before they stopped. Too bad another company couldn't or won't or can't pick up their great colors!!!
