Review: Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil

Over the years, several of you have mentioned that you like to use pure jojoba oil to remove your eye makeup. I've always loved jojoba as an ingredient in skincare and body care (it works so well to hydrate my skin) but I'm ashamed to say that, until I purchased this bottle of Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil from iherb a while back, I actually had never used this oil in its purest form.

Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil
(retail: around $10, 4.0 oz)

The four ounce bottle retails for $9.41 at iherb, but you can also purchase it directly from Desert Essence for $13.99 and they offer a 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee. They also have a store locator here, in case you want to try to find it locally.

And let me tell you, this is a serious multi-tasker that I now find myself reaching for constantly. In fact, check out the Desert Essence website here to view all of the ways you can use this product (scroll to the bottom of the page). You can remove makeup, hydrate your lips, moisturizer your cuticles, massage your scalp and so many other things with this one little oil.

Keep reading for my full review...

First let me start with what this oil feels like, smells like and tastes like. To me, it's like a thinned out olive oil, but it absorbs much quicker than olive oil. When you pour it out of the opening, it comes out quickly because it's not thick--I would say the closet comparison would be baby oil in terms how of how thin it feels. But unlike baby oil, jojoba oil does not leave my skin feeling greasy after it soaks in, and there is no shiny, oily-looking residue on the skin (as long as you just use a few drops--if you overdue it, it WILL look shiny/greasy).

Of all the pure oils I've used on my skin, jojoba oil definitely absorbs the quickest. I can pour a few drops on the back of my hand and within less than a minute, it's completely absorbed and my skin feels so soft and hydrated. As for the fragrance, to me there is just teeny, tiny hint of a nutty aroma. It kind of smells like sesame seeds, but it's very, very subtle. The flavor (because duh, I've tried it on my lips!) is a tiny bit bitter, but the flavor is quite subtle and dissipates quickly.

This bottle does come with a safety seal which you must remove before any product will pour out of the spout (I accidentally removed the seal before I took these photos--sorry!)

As eye makeup remover: I have used this quite a few times to remove my eye makeup and I am seriously impressed. I pour about a dime-sized amount into my palm, work it between my hands a bit and then massage it onto my (closed) eyes. Within seconds, I can feel my eye makeup literally start to melt off my skin, and even stubborn mascara melts away with a few gentle motions. After working it in, I then rinse my face with water, but that's not really enough for me, so I do follow up with a gentle facial cleanser (right now I'm using this and it works wonderfully) and afterwards my skin is like a baby's bottom. No greasy residue, just lovely, soft, CLEAN skin. No trace of eye makeup is left behind. Seriously, it's like magic, this stuff. Also, it doesn't sting my eyes or leave me with foggy vision.

As face makeup remover: After such success with eye makeup, I started to feel bolder and decided to use this to remove my long-wear foundation, etc. Now, if you've used an oil cleanser before, you know that water instantly breaks the cleanser down, allowing for an easy rinse. Well remember that this is pure oil, so it's not going to break down much with water. It DOES break down my face makeup (with ease) and removes every last trace of makeup on my face, but I do need to follow with a regular facial cleanser.

As facial moisturizer: I recently had a mishap with my skin where I tried to test too many facial masks back to back, and certain areas of my face were left feeling very dry and bumpy. All of my regular facial moisturizers weren't really helping return my skin to normal, so I figured I'd try using a few drops of jojoba oil at night (after cleansing) to see if that might help. The first night I did this, I washed my face as usual, and I skipped my nighttime moisturizer altogether. I simply poured a few drops of jojoba oil into my palm, rubbed my hands together a bit and then started working the oil into my face. The results were amazing. I obviously can only speak for myself here, but my skin LOVES this stuff. It's like my face takes on a natural glow the minute this oil starts to sink in. My face just looks more rosy, and it feels so soft and hydrated, without looking greasy or feeling slick. The next morning, I was delighted to see that I still had a rosy glow, and the dry patches and bumps were GONE. I mean, gone gone. I couldn't feel the bumpiness or dryness at all. I can't believe how quickly it returned my skin to normal. I have used this as nighttime facial moisturizer several times in the past few weeks and I have not encountered any breakouts whatsoever. But since I have very oily skin, I cannot use this as daytime moisturizer--it's too heavy for me in the daytime.

As moisturizer for hands and feet: Since I only bought the 4-oz bottle, I have been trying to ration it out and not slather it over my entire body night and day (though I kind of wish I could). I have only used this oil on my hands and feet a few times, and I do think that it really depends on how much (or how little) you use. Too much and it's going to feel way too oily (like, slip on the kitchen floor oily). If you use too little, you might not feel much in terms of hydration. Overall, this oil makes my skin--wherever I use it--feel incredibly soft and hydrated, but I do think I prefer it for my face at this point, just because the results are so wonderful in that way, for me personally.

For cuticles: This oil is very nice for cuticles, especially if you prefer a cuticle oil that doesn't leave your fingers greasy for a while after application. A drop on each cuticle is all I need. I spend a little time working it in and my cuticles look and feel so much better when I'm done. If you were to buy a bottle just for your cuticles, it could easily last you a year (and probably much longer).

For lips: If you've seen any of my recent lip color reviews lately, you know that my lips have been chapped due to the weird weather we've been having in San Diego lately (super hot in the day, chilly at night). So lately I've been taking a drop of jojoba oil at night, right before bed, and rubbing it across my lips. In the morning, my lips feel much softer, to the point of even feeling a little bit more plump. I've also noticed that it has helped to make the fine lines around my mouth look a little bit more plump as well. Also, I haven't experienced any breakouts around my lips (which sometimes happens with oily products).

FINAL VERDICT: The ways in which I have used Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil as outlined above have truly changed the way I feel about jojoba in general. In the past, I always viewed jojoba as a nice ingredient to see in my skincare and body care, but now I feel like I've become kind of snob about it all. I want pure, uncut joboba oil and nothing less. This oil is a game-changer for me, and I feel like I need a vat of it on hand at all times. Stubborn eye makeup? Try jojoba. Tough-to-remove long-wear foundation? Try jojoba. Dry, bumpy patches on your face? Try jojoba. Parched hands, feet, cuticles or lips? Try jojoba. It's not magic, but it is magical, in my humble opinion. I highly recommend it.

  1. I like Desert Essence's products. I'm using their daily moisturizer right now and I love it. I use grapeseed oil to take off my makeup. I've never had something remove mascara so well and be a lot cheaper than the eye makeup remover I was using.

  2. I bought a bottle of jojoba oil at Trader Joe's and love it. My face and hands get really dry in winter, so it's been a huge help on those lines. I also found a recipe where you can refresh your curls if you mix a couple drops each of jojoba oil and lavender oil with distilled water and spray that on your hair. That's worked very well for me, too. I haven't tried it as a makeup remover, but I will now.

    1. I have the same one from Trader Joe's, love it! Funny enough I just finished doing a shop there and I'm in the parking lot right now, hahaha! Well stocked on the jojoba though, as my bottle has lasted me 7-8 months! Great stuff!

  3. G, I've been using jojoba oil to cleanse my face every day for the past 5 months. It's actually called the Oil Cleansing Method, or OCM for short. I highly suggest you and the readers of this blog do some research on the OCM. i have never heard of this before and was blown away by this concept of cleaning your face with oil! It sounds counterintuitive, but it really does help your skin. I have oily acne-prone skin and this doesn't break me out at all. I love it!

    1. It works great for me too, I have combination skin (oily in some areas, dry in others) and using oil-based cleansers really helps balance it out, without making the oily bits worse -- they actually got LESS oily!

I use Burt's Bees Orange Essence facial cleanser, it's just glycerin mixed with oils and a few things like aloe juice and vitamin E. Smells fantastic and works great, takes off all my makeup easily and keeps pimples to a minimum. :D

    2. i've been cleansing with coconut oil mixed with MCT oil or olive oil. First I wipe eyes with a cotton pad with oil, then wipe face with cotton pad with oil, then put oil onto Clairsonic and "wash" then wipe off with dry wash rag. Been doing it for 2 weeks and skin is beautiful! I do wash with a facial cleanser in the a.m. I think I will add jojoba oil to the coconut oil next round of mixing.

  4. Sold! I've been considering trying jojoba oil for a while. Have you tried using it in your hair? I've gone sulfate-free, and I need a leave-in conditioner for my coarse, oily, dandruff-prone hair.

    1. I use olive oil in all the ways mentioned above.. but I do use it in my hair as leave in. I find it best to mix it with something else, if I put it in straight it tends to grab onto the first area it hits and does not distribute evenly. I have used aloe vera gel, and also my shine serum. Just put an equal amount of them both in your hands, rub them together, and run your hands through your hair. I find flipping my head upside down helps me get more on the ends and less at the roots. Long term use has done amazing things for my hair... it's thicker, stronger, and much more healthy.

    2. Jojoba oil is one of the best oils for hair, particularly oily type hair. It's light enough to absorb quickly so it won't leave you greasy. I've stopped using conditioner almost entirely since going sulfate-free, but for those occasional dry days a few drops of jojoba (mixed with sweet almond, another nice light oil... my all-purpose blend is half and half with a few drops of lavender essential oil) rubbed between my fingers and finger-combed through fixes it right up.

Have you tried the "no-poo" method, or are you using a sulfate-free shampoo?

    3. I'm currently trying out different sulfate-free shampoos. I tried the no-poo method, and my hair went "LOLno." I gave it a solid run, but it just didn't work for me.

  5. I had the same version as you G. and I enjoyed using it for eye makeup remover but it broke me out when I used it all over my face :( wish it didn't since it's so cheap and moisturizing but happy to hear it's working well for you! xxx

  6. This is very interesting! I am using Moroccan oil in my hair and Marijuka (sp?) on my face so it would be interesting to use only one product! Thanks G.!

  7. I love dessert essence tea tree oil face wash, it is a little drying but not to bad (nothing a good moisturizer can't take care of) and it has cleared up all of my acne:)

  8. I love pure jojoba oil - I use the Trader Joe's version, which is around $7 for 4oz. Actually, after looking at the bottles - and in particular the fact that they have identical text on the back of them - I'm 99% sure that the TJ version is relabeled Dessert Essence jojoba oil :)

  9. Haha, I needed some of this for a pair of natural earrings I have (animal bone and horn spirals - don't worry! No animals were harmed; the artists only reuse the leftovers of dead animals) and I do love it for my skin. It can be used to loosen and get rid of blackheads but I haven't had the best luck with that. Still a great way to moisturize!

  10. I use olive oil instead because it's easy to get (any grocery store), cheap, and it worked for me so I never wanted anything else..but I use it in all the same ways, plus in my hair as well. I would never be without oil again.. it's the best cleanser and moisturizer ever and has done so many other amazing things like making my brows and lashes grow, removing blackheads, and almost completely eliminating my acne. I do get one or two hormonal breakouts but they are tiny and gone in a day and I have not had a cystic breakout in over a year. Olive oil has done nothing but improve my skin, but I will mention that I tried Argan oil and it not only did not do as good of a job.. but irritated my skin and caused a minor breakout event... and I know a lot of other people swear by Argan. So if anyone is interested in trying an oil you may want to try a few and see what works for you.

  11. Jojoba oil is an excellent moisturizer, it's one of the most similar oils to natural human skin oils, so of course it moisturizes fabulously! I love how fast it absorbs.

I like to make a blend of half and half jojoba and sweet almond, with a few drops of lavender essential oil for scent. I put it in a cute bottle and carry it everywhere. Who needs pricy lotions anyway? :D

  12. I have been using jojoba oil for years and absolutely love it. I first found it at Trader Joe's under their brand, it is around $7 and has pretty much the same exact packaging, I will always buy it as long as it is sold.

  13. Sounds like a great product! I love using oils as moisturizers and beauty products. I've recently been using unrefined coconut oil and a body moisturizer/deep conditioner/eye cream and it's fantastic. It breaks me out though, anywhere else on my face. I'll have to try jojoba oil, thanks!

  14. You said that it was like a thinned out olive oil? I want to try this but I've tried pure extra virgin olive oil (and I rinsed it off) but it broke my normal face out terribly. Do you think that this is very similar to EVOO?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jojoba is around the consistency of EVOO. It absolutely isn't as heavy or greasy. Think of it in terms of a spritz of water as opposed to a deluge of water.. does that make sense? Haha.

  15. Jojoba oil, olive oil, and coconut oil all broke me out. I'm currently using grape seed oil and while my skin hasn't reacted badly to it, it isn't as moisturizing as I'd like. I'll be mixing almond oil to grape seed oil in my next batch.

  16. I bought this same exact Jojoba oil from VitaCost recently. I use it for my nails & cuticles, love it!

  17. I use Hobacare pure Jojoba. Been using it for years! So many uses for it from head to toe. Love this stuff!!!

  18. I use this too! You can add it to about anything from lip scrubs to hair masks. I also enjoy camellia oil, which removes make-up even better and washes off without residue. An amazing one is sold through Tatcha company (expesive though) but you can also find other Japanes brands for cheaper on ebay.

  19. I have a fairly large bottle of this stuff, and it's great for all the reasons you've mentioned so I'm glad to see you spreading the word. I just wanted to let you know that I got mine off of acne.org (where I originally found out about it) where it goes for $14.75 for an 8 oz bottle so it's a little bit cheaper. I've never had any issues with it on my acne-prone skin.

  20. This is the same jojoba oil i use! Its my HG for the winter time when my face gets so dry here in Arizona. for day time I Just add 2 drops (3 drops for night time) in my palm and mix it in with my CeraVE face lotion and my face stays nice and smooth ALL day with no dryness in sight! So beats buying a separate lotion for winter! my bottle has last me almost three years! I LOVE this stuff so much during the winter and cant go without it. I once had a FIT when i found out my boyfriend took my ONLY bottle with him when he went out of town for a week!! i was so upset because i had just showered and i i was about to put on my lotion when i noticed my jojoba oil was missing! look all over the house for it and when i called my boyfriend and he said he had it i yelled @#@#$%^@ then got in my car and went to the store ASAP to buy me another bottle LOL! DRAMATIC i know, but thats how much i love this stuff! The boyfriend does too, so now there is a bottle for each of us :op

  21. I have been itching to try jojoba oil, so far I've just used sweet almond, olive, and grapeseed oil on my hair. I think vitacost would have it for cheaper.

  22. Ooh interesting! I have a bottle of this for making makeup with, now I'm interested to use it on it's own!

  23. Totally late here, but I picked up a bottle at Trader Joe's and am loving it. My skin's been really unhappy lately--flakes and breakouts--so I'm trying pure jojoba oil as my nighttime moisturizer to try and calm things down. I haven't been using it long enough to see results, though, this is only the second night. I'm also trying a bit on my scalp, because I have seborrheic dermatitis and a lot of flakes, and this is supposed to help with that (I already use a prescription shampoo, which takes care of most of the flakes, but not all). Here's hoping!
