Mini-review & swatches: Urban Decay Skull Shadow Box

Since the Urban Decay Skull Shadow Box is still on clearance for $12 on the Urban Decay website (retail: $36), I wanted to get a mini-review and swatches up ASAP in case you were thinking of picking one up. I purchased this palette shortly after the Urban Decay clearance sale started, and now that I've had some time to play around with it, I'd like to share my opinion of this palette with you.

Urban Decay Skull Shadow Box
(9 x 0.03 oz, retail: $36; clearance price: $12)

This palette comes with nine small pans of shadow and one double-ended sponge-tip applicator (though after reading the reviews on the UD site, it's apparently supposed to come with two).

Six of the nine shades in this palette contain sparkle. Since my camera sometimes has a hard time picking up sparkle in photos, I've circled the shades that contain sparkle in the following photo:

(shades circled contain sparkle/glitter)

If you're not a fan of sparkle, I'm afraid that you won't get much use out of the majority of the shadows in hits palette. There are two mattes here (Oil Slick and Twice Baked) and both contain a fair amount of sparkle. The other seven shades are shimmers, and four the seven contain sparkle.

All of the following swatches were done on bare skin (no eyeshadow primer):

Cherry -  a light pink shimmer that's highly pigmented and contains a fair amount of sparkle. Easy to apply, easy to blend and very impressive color payoff for such a light shade. (If you want a full-size version of this color, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Midnight Cowboy Rides Again - a deep, neutral champagne shimmer with a high amount of sparkle. There's so much glitter in this shadow that it makes the overall texture crumbly. Lots and lots of fallout with this one, so proceed with caution. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Grifter - medium lavender shimmer with glitter (although not as much glitter as Midnight Cowboy Rides Again. The texture is smooth and buttery and the pigmentation is wonderful. (If you want a full-size version of this color, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Vert - if you're a longtime lover of Vert, you better get your fix while you still can because this shade has been discontinued. It's one of my favorites from UD--a vibrant, shimmery, electric green that's wonderfully pigmented, goes on like butter and contains no sparkle/glitter.

Oil Slick: a black matte with a fair amount of glitter. We've seen similar shades by Wet n Wild, etc. so I just can't get excited about this one, although I will say that over primer, Oil Slick is a very intense matte black. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Shattered - people either love or hate Shattered, and I'm in the "love" camp. I've never had a problem with the pigmentation of this color, although some say it's too sheer for their liking (you can build for more intensity and I do suggest wearing it over primer). This aquamarine shimmer has the loveliest golden duochrome effect--my pics don't due it justice. By the way, this, along with Vert and Blunt, do not contain any sparkle/glitter. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Blunt - if you're a warm-tone junkie, you're probably going to love Blunt (which pairs very nicely with the color next to it in this palette, Chopper). Blunt is a golden champagne shimmer with no sparkle. It has that signature UD buttery texture and blends like a dream. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Chopper - not as much of a glitter bomb as Midnight Cowboy Rides Again, Chopper does contain a good amount of sparkle so you'll need to be careful during application. This is a beautiful shimmery copper with great pigmentation. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

Twice Baked: like Oil Slick, this is a matte shadow with some sparkle in it (not a lot, but you can see it when on the eye). It's a very pigmented matte chocolate brown. (If you want a full-size version of this shadow, it's currently on clearance for $9 here.)

One more thing I'd like to add in case you've never seen this palette in person: the pans are very small--almost like children's play-makeup:

To whom would I recommend this palette?

If you're new to Urban Decay eyeshadows and you want to try a variety of different colors and finishes without breaking the bank, then I think this is a great way to do that. Even though the pans are small, you'll still get dozens of uses out of these shades and I think you'll be able to easily determine which colors you might want to purchase in full-size options. If you're drawn to colorful eye looks, then you'll probably enjoy this palette. Also, if you love shimmer and sparkle, you'll probably enjoy this palette as well. Oh, and if you are a Vert fan and you're running dangerously low, this could be one of your last chances to get this color since it's now discontinued.

To whom would I not recommend this palette?

If you're not big on color and you don't like sparkle in your eyeshadows, then this palette is not for you. Six of the nine shades contain varying degrees of sparkle, and you can also expect some fallout with some of these shades. If you're more of a neutral, earthtone person, there are enough shades here to catch your eye, but only if you don't mind sparkle along with your earthtones. Also, if you don't like working with small shadow pans, then you'll probably want to skip this one as well.

If you think you'd like to purchase this palette, get it while it's still on clearance for $12 (I have no idea how much longer this sale is going to last, but it's been up for a couple of weeks now).

Do you already own the UD Skull Shadow Box? If so, do you think it's worth $12? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. G, you rock! I've been wanting a sparkly gold eye shadow and thought UD was my best bet but I don't wear makeup very often and didn't want to take a chance even with clearance price. I knew single eye shadows were on sale but didn't think to check palettes. I would have if I'd known about this one because it has a couple of colors I think might be what I want and the rest look fun to play with. I just ordered it. Thanks so much for reviewing this!

  2. Thanks for sharing this deal and these swatches, I think I am going to pass on this deal simply because the shadows are so tiny (thanks for the coin comparison) and I have too many shadows with sparkles/shine so I'm trying to purchase more matte shades. Thanks again for the quick review.

    1. I bought this palette more than a year (maybe two) ago and STILL have a good deal left of all but one of the shades, and I'm a liberal applier. For me it was learning how to get the shadow carefully out and onto the brush. All the colors blend beautifully with more neutral matte shades and (for me) were less sparkly.

  3. I saw a bunch of these are Nordstrom Rack for $11.97 (pretty much the same price). Perfect for those who only want the palette and not want to pay for shipping. They had stacks of them (like how they did when they had the BOS4) and the Midnight Emergency Kit. I debated against it since it was so sparkly and I had more than half the colors in the palette.

  4. Hi G, I ordered this and the black palette when the UD clearance first started and I love it! Totally worth the $12! Oh and I was sitting in a patch of sunlight when I first pulled it out of the box and the silver cover on this palette was blindingly sparkly in the sun lol!

  5. I won a Sephora gift card a while back and decided to try UD shadows since they are supposed to be the best.. bought the Ammo Box because it had a good selection of colors and neutrals. It has several of these shadows. Although the colors are beautiful (shattered and grifter were two of my favorites) they drive my eyes crazy. Feels like I have salt in them all day and even after I take them off. I have never in my life seen shadows with so much fallout.. even if you are really careful it winds up all over your face, and with the glittery colors, keeps falling off throughout the day. I was seriously considering buying the Naked palette.. but after this experience I do not think I will ever buy UD again. I really wish I had bought another brand instead, it was a huge purchase for me and they will probably never get used. I would rather wear my Maybelline silk finish quads.. just as pretty colors, better formula, no burning eyes, and I can buy twice as many colors for the same price.

  6. I ordered this on sale as well. I made the mistake of wearing one of the sparkle shadows to my semi-professional job, where I work with alot of men. Midway through the day my face was covered with glitter, so much so, one of the vendors asked me why I had glitter all over my face. I felt so stupid. Please do not wear these shadows if you are looking to be taken seriously at work.

  7. I think I'm in love with Shattered. Oil slick and Chopper are in the Naked palettes, but the rest of those colors would be new to me... This might be worth purchasing since I hardly own any colors. Just neutrals.

  8. This palette brings back a lot of good memories. It was my very first eyeshadow and Urban Decay purchase in college after I borrowed it from my roommate and fell in love. My go to look was always Midnight Cowboy Rides Again with Oil Slick as a liner. Just wet your brush a little and the black will apply just like liner but not as stark. Also I learned later that the individual Midnight Cowboy Rides Again is a LOT more chunky and has more fall out then the one in the palette. It obviously was the first one I ran out of so I was surprised by this when I bought the individual of it to replace it. Just an FYI for those who like the color.

  9. that does look cute. I'm glad you did this review which helps me decide I do not need it, as I do not need any more colored eye shadows, nor do shiny things look good on me. Thank you for being so informative!

  10. I like the variety of colors in this palette, but too bad they're small and mostly shimmery. It still seems like a great deal for $12 though!

  11. I picked this up along with the Vegan palette and a single of Mary Jane shadow. Urban Decay is just way too expensive for me unless it's on sale. Personally, I love the really sparkly shades. They're probably not the best look for a professional or daytime look but they really rock for nighttime/special occasions when you want more glitz. I usually apply regular shadow then use a little Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy and lightly pat one of the glitter shades on top. The Pixie Epoxy is amazing and really makes the glitter stay put all night with no fallout. I see people complain about glitter fallout in shadow all the time and I think it's a bit silly. Glitter is not the same as powder--it's much heavier--so you need something that's stickier and specifically designed to make it adhere. It's like when you use glitter on craft projects. You would never try to get glitter to stick to something on it's own. It just wouldn't work. You use glue instead. Cosmetics are no different. You need the proper adhesive or it will just fall off. And it should go without saying that you should apply glitter shades carefully and try to avoid getting any in your actual eye (stay away from the tear ducts!!) or you will get that unpleasant gritty sand-in-the-eye feeling.

  12. Thank you for the honest (as always!) review of this palette. I think my $12 would be better spent elsewhere. There are too many sparkly shades and the shadows are so small. I think I will be better off buying one or two Maybelline Color Tattoos in shades more useful to me. Thanks again for taking the time to review this!
