My live-tweet of my first experience with the new L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream

As I mentioned yesterday, I bought the new L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream and will give it a full and proper review after I'm done testing it.

New L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream in Light
(retail: $10.95 at Rite Aid, 1.0 oz)

HOWEVER, if you don't follow me on Twitter, I thought you might enjoy a live-tweet I did last night, during my first experience with this product.

For your reading pleasure, here's how my first application went last night:

@NouveauCheap Fair warning: i'm about to live tweet my first experience with the new Loreal BB Cream. Opening the tube now...

@NouveauCheap It's white, no strong fragrance but it's gritty...there are tiny micro beads in the formula....

@NouveauCheap The micro beads disappear quickly when you work it into the skin. Doesn't feel thick or heavy so far...

@NouveauCheap This is clearly a self-adjusting color...which makes it like self-tanner...hard to know if you're applying it evenly! Help!

@NouveauCheap I'm totally guessing and HOPING i'm not missing spots...

@NouveauCheap Feels like a thin exfoliating scrub at first...them becomes smoother.

‏@NouveauCheap Done with application...looking in mirror waiting for the ”magic” to happen....

@NouveauCheap Whoa. It literally changed color right before my eyes.

@NouveauCheap I applied to clean, bare skin, no concealer or anything. Just went from a natural NC20 to probably an NC35 in two minutes!

@NouveauCheap I clearly picked the wrong shade. I bought Light, should have bought Fair. I never buy fair b/c that's usually the pinkish shade. Ugh.

@NouveauCheap This is not good...it's turning orange now. On the plus side, it feels like a mattifier on the skin...may be good for oil control.

@NouveauCheap Coverage is not bad! I'd say a step or 2 above a tinted moisturizer. Better than I thought it would be in that dept.

@NouveauCheap Wow, when I touch my skin, it really feels like a mattifying lotion. Same tight, almost tacky feel to it. Yet it feels VERY light.

@NouveauCheap Just applied my concealer and setting powder. I now have reverse raccoon eyes since my concealer is abt 3 shades lighter than the BB cream.

@NouveauCheap Applying rest of my makeup now...have to go to dinner like this! Will tweet later regarding wear time, etc.

@NouveauCheap Thanks SO much for reading my live tweet of the L'oreal BB Cream! Wish me luck out in public! :)

To follow up where my last tweet left off, I wore this product from about 8PM to Midnight last night. Hardly long enough to comment on wear, but when I looked in the mirror before I removed my makeup, it was still going strong.

So far, I've got mixed feelings about this one (obviously), but things can, and often do, change after multiple applications. After I've tested it for a few weeks straight, I'll be sure to post an in-depth review here for you.

Thanks for reading, and I'd LOVE to know how the L'Oreal BB Cream is working for YOU, if you own it. I'm probably going to exchange the one I bought, Light, for Fair, because these do run dark.

  1. I tried it and it turned soooo orange on me. I sampled it at Walgreens and tried the light. I didn't want to risk getting the fair and having it be horrible too. I really didn't like it.

  4. Hm interesting. Thanks for mentioning the color because if I do pick it up, I'll grab the fair. Although I may wait for more reviews first before spending money.

  5. I'd love a review comparing "real" Asian bb cream vs US versions. I do love my Missha bb cream but it is pretty pricey!

  6. I have the fair color and it worked well for me, i'm around an nc 10/15 probably closer to 15 now that its summer. I definitely agree with the mattifying aspect as well as it having more coverage than i expected

  7. Any chance of a comparison between "real" Asian bb cream and US versions? I love my Missha bb cream but it is NOT cheap!

  10. I prefer Asian BB creams over American BB creams. More coverage, claimed benefits, and just feels more authentic. Only con is most only suit fair complexions. About $15 for 50mL of Missha Perfect Cover or Lioele Beyond the Solution BB creams isn't bad at all.

Maybe in a few years American markets will improve their formulas, but I can't imagine them outdoing Asians, mainly Koreans, who've been at it for years.

    1. Target has a great selection. They have EcoTools, Sonia Kashuk, and if you find a larger Target, ELF. Also, they may have Target's own brushes. I have the EcoTools and the Target ones, and they are great! Hope this helps you. ^^

  12. you went out wearing a badly matched foundation? I just want to say how much I appreciate the things you go through for us! Are you going to go back and get the lighter color? Thanks for sharing!

  13. I tried this in medium. I honestly really like it. It feels light and even out my skin tone. I didn't even mind the micro beads, i thought it was cool. I love the finish. The lasting power in Vegas heat isn't that great, but then again, nothing really is especially for someone with combo skin. However, touching up here and there seems to work for me! Anyway, I liked it. I also tried the skin79 bb cream and I HATED that.. the grayness never went away (for me, anyway).

Anyway, I can't wait to see the in-depth review :)

  14. I've read about Maybelline/Loreal having BB creams and have been wondering if they were any good but based on your review I'll skip them. The LUMI concealer though is great though! I recently (late on the bandwagon) had bought BB cream from Holika called Peach Girl due to reading about another blogger's experience. It is fantastic! Doesn't turn orange/pink as american foundation seems to do. $13 including shipping so buying from ebay doesn't make it that much more expensive than the american bbcream. It also has very good wear and coverage. Before I used to wear Revlon Colorstay, but it is too time consuming to stipple and does feel plastic-ey like a bit of a mask. The BB for me stays on as long as Colorstay. Haven't tested overnight but for my needs it lasts a whole day. Also no breakout or reaction. It doesn't turn greasy and slimy. I like it is an all in one product and has spf and I can skip moisturizer. I will probably try to finish up my foundation stash and plan to only buy BB cream in the future. Will save myself space!

  15. Haha, that was a a fun read.

I'm surprised you still went out with the wrong foundation shade on your face!~ O.O

I'd like to try this out in the drugstores, sample it before I buy. The mattifying quality sounds nice.

  16. Ugh I hated this. I tried it for a day and didn't see any improvement in the color it was just way too orange. I returned it. I really wanted this to be good too. I guess we'll see what Maybelline has to offer.

  17. I agree with the other commenters who said they tried it at Walgreens & it was ORANGE. It's disappointing American ""BB creams"" aren't like Asian ones :(

  18. I agree with the other commenters about trying it at Walgreens and the product being ORANGE. It's very disappointing that the American ""BB creams"" aren't even close to the Asian ones.

  19. I'll stick with the Korean versions..and not really impressed much with those either. Didn't figure the Loreal one would be worth much, haven't heard any good reviews anywhere about this product.

  20. I use Asian BB Cream from Ettude House.. It's light weight and never turns cake.. It absorbs in your skin and gives you that fresh look in minutes ,..

  21. I've read a few other reviews for this product and I'm not impressed. I HAAAAAAAAATE "self adjusting" (time released/ oxidizing) products. It's impossible to apply them evenly and get a good color match. I'm super pale and can't deal with a product that looks good when I leave the house then makes me look like I have the skin of a pumpkin by the time I get to work.

Also, what is with US/ Euro BB creams being nothing like Asian BB creams? When everyone and their mom is raving about Asian BB creams why go and create something that is just a glorified tinted moisturizer? I have to wonder what these companies are thinking we want out of these products. I'll stick with my Skin Food BBs, they apply like a dream and make my skin look great and not makeupy.

  22. I bought the Maybelline BB cream and I really like it so far. It's not white, it looks more orangy on my finger but not on my face. It's maybe two steps up from tinted moisturizer but that's all I really need. After I apply I noticed I look more.....glow-y, I guess you'd call it. But not as though I just bought foundation for a teenager, full of sparkle and shine and whatever it is they put in some of those. I use concealer under and powder over. Not sure if this would work in the winter but I think it's perfect for summer.

  23. I haven't seen Maybelline's yet but I try every BB I come across, samples or otherwise if convienient. Etude House ia my fav so far, followed by Dior, Missa, and Garnier as least fav. This L'oreal would be okay if it wasn't leaning so orange on me too. Ugh. Going to exchange for Fair ( I apparently didn't read the 'self adjusting' part, duhhh and thought Fair was almost white when I peeked in the tube so I chose Light oops LOL! Hopefully Fair isn't pink. I do wish it had some SPF though, and a decent level of it like some of the Asian brands. I like your tweets!

  25. I just want to let everyone know that there are actually 2 different BB reams out from L'Oreal. There is one I saw at Walgreens that comes in 3 shades and only has a 15 SPF. That is NOT this one. They were unpacking this one at one of my local Bed, Bath and Beyonds - I 'll have to go back!

    1. I think you are talking about the youth code line that loreal has from walgreens, right? :]

    2. Yep, the other one is the Youth Code version, and from what I can tell,.that one has SPF and also had more skincare claims. I'd like to try it too!

    3. More info - the display for the Magic BB cream had an actual tester (at CVS)! The tester color was light and I was thinking of your twitter narration as I blended it on the back of my hand, which turned incredibly orange and was almost impossible to remove even with a disinfectant wipe from my car! I think this will be a pass from me!

  26. This is a great product if you take it for what it is. It is not a tinted moisturizer, nor is it a BB cream (as I have understood traditional Asian BB creams to be, I have not used one, I have used the American versions). They call it a "skin beautifier" and I would say that is accurate.
First, it runs dark... and there is a huge difference between "fair" and "light", with "light" being the tester available. If you would normally pick up "light" get "fair", it is MUCH lighter. I am currently a W3 in true match and "fair" is fine. I do believe from using it that there is some adjustment in tone when applied, and it is quite sheer, so one shade would be able to be used by a range of skin tones. I believe "fair" would be acceptable for even very light skin tones.. However "light" is definitely more like "medium" compared to most foundations. It has not oxidized on me, and does not appear the slightest bit orange.
The product comes out clear, with beads that break and adjust the tone when rubbed in. It is quite thin, and very lightweight. You really want to apply this with fingers, to work in the beads. It dries quickly, so apply in sections. It does smooth skin texture, and "give an improved appearance to bare skin" as advertised.. the key word there is "bare". It is not a foundation, it is not going to cover blemishes, etc. It does improve the appearance of my skin though- it looks like I have nothing on, but my coloring is much better and more even, my skin looks healthier, and much smoother. The first time I applied it I did half my face to compare- and could definitely see and feel a difference. My face felt very smooth, like I had applied a silicone primer, but dry (in a good way, not dried out) at the same time with no oily, wet, or sticky residue. It has lasted all day in the heat, and I was outside for a few hours.
It does not contain sunscreen- which is a plus for me. I am very sensitive to them and can only wear a few products, most that contain sunscreen break me out terribly. I can put my compatible sunscreen under it, or powder with spf over it and all is good. It is supposed to improve skin over time with the inclusion of vitamins etc., only time will tell if that is the case.
The finish is matte- which is a big change from every other TM or "BB" cream I have tried. They all leave me greasy and shiny, this does not. I think it is a great product for those who have oily skin who are looking for a product to improve their skin tone, especially in the summer. I don't know how much actual oil control it has, I do wear a good primer so I had no problems with breakthrough, but it did not add any additional oil or interfere with the performance of my primer. It did give a luminous, brighter quality to my skin, without any trace of shine. I don't know how to explain it.. but it did.
I think this is a great product for someone who wants to improve their skin while not wishing to wear a foundation, or those wearing a powder foundation. It is excellent for days when you do not want, or do not have time, to apply makeup. It only takes a second to rub in, and it makes a difference. It may make a great primer as well, if you have normal skin. I found with a bit of concealer and a good powder it made a big difference in the appearance of my skin while having next to nothing on it.
