Breaking it down: a comprehensive list of Urban Decay Naked Palette dupes

UPDATED 10/24/2012: New additions are starred**

There's no denying that the original Urban Decay Naked Palette (retail: $50) took the beauty community by storm when it was first unleashed into the hands of beauty fanatics. In its wake, many, many brands have created dupes/lookalikes of this infamous palette, which is a great thing for Nouveau Cheap readers who don't want to spend $50 on one palette, right?

Due to the crazy popularity of the UD Naked Palette (this post is mostly about the Naked Palette but there are a few Naked2 Palette references below), there are now tons of lookalikes on the market. Some are close dupes and some not so close (but still in the same general ballpark). So I thought I'd put them all together in one post for reference (and if you know of others, please leave a comment on this post and enlighten us!).

(Click the title of each product to go directly to the brand's website, when available)

**Profusion Midnight Fever Palette and Sultry & Neutrals Palette (retail: $4.50 each)
As of the time of this post (Oct. 24, 2012), these are Holiday 2012 palettes that are currently available at Walgreens (in-store). Click here for pics and swatches.

**(CANADA ONLY) Quo Back To Basics Palette (retail: $25CAD)
Quo is a beauty brand that's sold elusively at Shoppers Drug Marts in Canada. You can only purchase this product in-store. If you live in Canada or have a nice friend who can get this for you if you're not in Canada, check out Sparkled Beauty's comparison post with impressive swatches here.

**Stila In The Light Palette (retail: $39)
Click here for a great review.

**Sephora Collection Primal Instincts Eyeshadow Palette (retail: $26)

Click here for a review and swatches.

**City Color Special Effect Bright Eyes Palette in Dark Room (retail: $3.99)
This one's a bit challenging to find, but I know that select Rite Aid and Walgreens stores carry this collection, which I believe is limited edition (although I could be wrong). Check out a review with swatches here.

**Sigma Bare Palette (retail: $36)
Click here for some great swatches.

**Kat Von D True Romance Saint Palette (retail: $36)
Check out some swatches here and here to see the similarities.

**LORAC Unzipped Palette (retail: $40)
Click here for some great swatches and here for a side-by-side comparison post.

**Mally Beauty In The Buff Palette (retail: $45.46)
I believe this is a QVC exclusive. Click here for a video comparison to the UD Naked and Naked2 palettes.

**MUA Heaven & Earth Palette (retail: £4.00)
This is a UK brand, but they ship to the US and their prices even with shipping are VERY affordable. Check out some gorgeous swatches here.

(NOTE: MUA also has another UD Naked palette dupe called the Undressed Palette (retail: £4.00). I've heard from some readers that this one is a closer match to the Naked2 Palette, however looking at these swatch comparisons to the original Naked palette, I'll let you be the judge.)

Sonia Kashuk Instructional Eye Palette (retail: $19.99)
This is an all-matte palette but the color range is similar to the Naked palette.
Check out some great photos and swatches here.

Silk Naturals UD Naked Palette Clone Set (retail: $36)

The Balm Nude 'tude palette (retail: $36)
Note: this can often be purchased on sale, and was reported as being $18 on HauteLook at one time.
View Temptalia's swatches here.

Check out some swatches here.

e.l.f. Beauty Look Book Neutral Eye Palette (retail: $5)
NOTE: this palette is no longer available on the e.l.f. website. You may still be able to find it in-store at Target, Big Lots, Ross and Burlington Coat Factory according to several helpful readers.
Check out Wing's comparison post and video here
And there are also some good side-by-side swatches here.

**NYX Bronze Smokey Look Kit (retail: $12)
Click here for a review with swatches.

NYX I Dream of St. Marteen Palette (retail: $8.75)
This is currently on sale (as of 6/25/12) on Cherry Culture for $6.99.
Check out some swatches here.

NYX Champagne & Caviar Palette (retail: $10.99)
No longer available on the NYX website, the link above will take you to the Ulta site. It's also still available on Cherry Culture where it is currently on sale for $8.50 (as of 6/25/12).
Check out some swatches here.

NYX Nude on Nude Palette (retail: $25)

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Nude Palette (retail: $10.99)

Forever 21 Natural Eyeshadow Palette (retail: $6.80)
NOTE: this palette is not on the F21 website, but it's still available for purchase in-store.

Rue 21 Natural Eye Kit (retail: $6.99)
This is kind of a dupe of a dupe, if you will. Packaging-wise, it's a near-perfect dupe of the Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eyeshadow Collection Palette (retail: $36), but I think that the Too Faced palette was  Too Faced's response to the UD Naked Palette. So...yeah!

Coastal Scents 88 Warm Palette (retail: $24.95)

Avon 8 in 1 Neutral Tones Palettes (retail: $12)
You can see some pics and swatches here.

Sleek Storm Palette (retail: $10)

Victoria's Secret The Nakeds Eye Kit (retail: $28)
No longer available on the VS website; perhaps you can still find it in-store (not sure of that as of the time of this post). Here is a review containing photos and swatches of this palette.

Various Wet n Wild eyeshadows
Not a palette per say, but I did a very detailed post a while back comparing several Wet n Wild eyeshadows to the shades in the UD Naked Palette. You can view that post here.

Hope that helps those of you looking for a low-cost alternative to the Naked Palette! And if you own any of the dupes mentioned here, I'd love to know what you think of them!

  1. Love this post, there are so many nudes in the world!!!!!!! I've been trying to find a pic of the new VS palette too, it's like trying to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow :o)

  2. whaaat I think VS is looking for some sort of lawsuit with that packaging since it looks so similar to the naked 2

  3. Awesome post ! but where i can find the elf one? its no longer available online! the link in your post its for a different palette :( i want thaaaat!

    1. Gah!! You're absolutely right. I'll have to fix that when i'm near my computer! So Sorry! I thought it was the same, but it looks like the real dupe was available at Target...and maybe not available anymore? I'll have to do some more research.

Thanks so much for pointing that out!

    2. I've seen it as recently as, what, a week ago? At both Target and at Big Lots. Check out your local discount stores, you might find something!

      Delete
    3. Also check Ross or Burlington Coat Factory, I've seen it at both places. I love love love this palette but am going to have to get another one soon as there are a few colors that I've used up!

    4. I just saw it one the ELF website, and it's 50% off!

  4. I have both the Naked Palette and the PP Shimmer Strips, and I have to say that though the colors look similar swatched, they look different on the eye. On the eye, the differences in finishes, I feel, are really noticeable. Also, the texture and quality of the PP palette isn't nearly as close. So while I think it is a nice alternative, I would still argue that the Naked palette is worth it. The biggest problem I have with the PP palette is that the colors start to blend together with use. It has been driving me crazy.

    1. Completely agree about the PF "smushed shadows" issue. If they had only separated the shades I would enjoy the palette so much more. I actually used it this morning, I use a flat brush to do my crease (weird, I know) and it was driving me nuts because I could only get the very tip of the brush in the color- it was one of the thin strips. I kept getting stripes of color and having to blend them out. Frustrating. It WAS pretty once you get it on though...

      Delete
    2. And I don't know why I kept calling them PP...I must have been tired.

  5. That was amazing.. and very helpful. Especially since I was just about to break down and buy UD Naked. I won a Sephora gift card and I am so confused about what to buy... especially since I never buy high end. I want to get something I will get a lot of use out of, and eyeshadows are my weakness... but there are so many palettes out there.

    1. get the Urban Decay! So worth it, you won't regret it! :) :)

    2. I agree! I just purchased UD Naked two weeks ago after holding out this long and I wish I'd gotten it much sooner.

    3. Yes, get the Naked palette. The best thing about Sephora and Ulta is you can return anything at any time. I just returned some things from last summer! They have great return policies. But you probably wont want to return it :)

  6. Sonia Kashuk has a dupe palette as well. http://www.target.com/p/sonia-kashuk-instructional-eye-palette/-/A-13348177

  7. And I have a different NYX dupe palette than those two you showed...this one in Champagne & Caviar. http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?skuId=2213602&productId=xlsImpprod2150062&navAction=push&navCount=1&subdoc=22130offwk2310nyx&categoryId=cat940003#sku2213603

    1. I have this palette too, but they no longer make it. It's a good palette if you are just looking for neutral shades, but it's quite a bit different than the Urban Decay Naked Palette.

  9. Amazing article! Thank you so much for this. I'm going to take a second look at physicians formula nude set for sure.

  10. Wow, I'm quite impressed with the Sleek palette! I've never tried their makeup before. Even with international shipping, the palette is still only $23.50 total, so it's still a lot less expensive than the UD Naked.

Thanks for the post! So helpful.

  11. MUA - a UK cosmetics company - made a palette that was meant to be a dupe of the Naked palette and it has a pretty good price tag on it.

They named their palette "Undressed" lol

  12. Oh my God! Thank you for noticing my post about the Sleek and UD Naked comparison! You totally made my day! Thank you!!! Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Absolutely brilliant, thank you SO MUCH G for this post! I would have never realized Elf's neutral palette was a dupe, but it the resemblance is downright eerie!

    ReplyDelete
  14. why do you say it is "infamous"? I have never read anything negative about the palette. What's the bad stuff?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The ” infamous” reference was in regard to the price. In many peoples eyes (including my own) that's the ONLY bad thing about it!

      Delete
    2. Another point about the 'infamous' labeling is the fiasco about UD's recent announcement that they are now going to sell their line in China, where animal testing is mandatory. This is contrary to the UD initial stance, and one of the reasons it reached near-cult status here in the US, that it absolutely was against and never conducted animal testing. It has many loyal users in an uproar (no pun intended).

  15. here is another UD naked palette dupe, but 100% vegan and in mineral makeup form: http://host.silknaturals.com/creb/naked-palette-clone-p-1200.html

i haven't tried it yet but it's on my wishlist!

  16. I love this blog because I'm always looking for a great bargain, and I wanted to put in my two cents, since this intrigued me. I have 4 of the named palettes in this list (Physician's Formula, ELF Beauty Look Book, Coastal Scents 88 Warm Palette, and Avon 8-in-1 Palette), but there's another good Nude palette that I'm always reaching for. It's from ELF called the ELF Studio Endless Eyes Pro Mini Eyeshadow Palette in Warm. You get 32 colors, all for $5!!! I don't have the UD Naked Palette to make comparison swatches, but it's such a bargain, the colors are gorgeous and pigmented, and you can create many looks with it. Since those ELF Beauty Look Books tend to be seasonal, you might find it at Target or Big Lots, but the 32 palette has been on the website for quite some time, even though it lists as being limited edition. So here's the link in case anyone is interested.

  18. I was at my local victoria's secret the other day and I was able to see "the nakeds" eyeshadow palette and although I don't personally own either one of the urban decay naked palettes, I can say that the victoria's secret eyeshadows are very reminiscent of the urban decay eyeshadows, they're soft and nicely pigmented. The VS palette has 10 eyeshadows and comes with a soft kohl pencil eyeliner and dual-ended eyeshadow brush that's pretty decent. As for the packaging, it definitely seems inspired by the urban decay naked 2 palette but one of the employees there told me it's supposed to be their neutral summer palette to go along with their "the nakeds" line of bras. Hope this helps out anyone curious about the victoria's secret palette, sorry for no pictures, I wanted to take a pic but it was too awkward w/ employees watching me like hawks!

  19. Yay! Great post! I have to say that mua's heaven and earth palette is amazing.. And they ship very quickly to the USA for a decent shipping price .. Considering it's overseas.. The browns in that palette are wonderful, no fall out, buildable and last all day- through a 3 mile run even! Too bad that elf palette is no longer available.. The colors appear identical..The nyx nude on nude is great if you want a more natural look as their colors are more powdery/ lighter.. But still good and have great staying power! I actually own the ud naked palette and tend to use it with other palettes since some of the colors are too heavily pigmented and need To be blended out quite a bit.. plus some are way too glittery and I experience fallout with many of them.. All in all there are so many just as good if not better alternatives and it's alot of fun playing around with different options.

  23. It took me a long time to finally buy the UD palette, but it is worth it. The quality and variety are great, and I use each one. If you think you'll use most of the shadows, I would say to go for it instead of wastig money looking for dupes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you wait for friends and family from Ulta and Sephora, you can get the Naked palette for $40. At $40 or full price, it is a fantastic value for the quality of the shadows. I have many similar colors in other palettes including UD Book of Shadows IV and The Balm's Nude Tude (which I also love) but I always reach for the UD palette! Love it. On a side note I got the Book of Shadows($24) and Nude Tude($18) from HauteLook.

  27. I have to admit that I have almost all of these palettes. So sad. But in the end, UD's Naked is just so fabulous and original with the colors that you have to have it. Not really the Naked 2 though. I gave that one away. :(

  28. thank you for this list, G! it's very much appreciated, and even THAT is an understatement!

  30. Thanks so much for this post and all of your hard work compiling the list! I, for one, am on a very tight(read: almost non-existent extra $$) budget, but still like to look nice and treat myself once in a while. All of your much more affordable alternatives will fit the bill for me! Thanks again!! ^^

  31. My daughter bought me the VS Nakeds pallette for my birthday. I don't generally wear eye shadow but since she was so excited about getting it for me I have been trying to wear some everyday. I was suprised that the color payoff was so good since the colors are so soft. Also the color wore well on me all day with no creasing and I did not have on a primer just a little Maybelline Superstay concealer on my lids

  32. Saucebox Cosmetics has a palette with six large pans (5 grams each) that can dupe a few of NAKED or NAKE2's colors. She will eventually have individual pans later this year for $8 for 5 grams of product. Check her out at.

  33. Hope I can found the elf beauty book when i arrived in US!

And I think its worth mentioning, Stila in the light palette is another "dupe", maybe?

  34. I just got the 32-color e.l.f. palette yesterday at Walgreen's for $5. They had just received it and the clerk went and got it out of the back for me; all the products were still shrink-wrapped together. If I like the warm shades -- looks like every brown I'll ever need! -- I'm going to go back and get the cool shades palette.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just got the Forever 21 natural palette. I have yet to play around with the colors. I also picked up another palette from Forever 21, it is the 21 color eyeshadow palette. It was $9.80, and the shadows are a pretty good size. Why isn't the coastal scents 28 neutral palette up there? Is it a dupe?

  38. I found a great one.. and it is a true dupe, unlike some of the others on this list. City Color special effect palette in Dark Room. It is at Rite Aid right now for only $3.99. A bit dry in formula, but quite pigmented. There are two other palettes in the collection as well.

  44. I just bought three Profusion mini palettes at walgreens, each palette has 6 colors and if all the shadows were in one single palette i'd have all the colors of the naked palette! i don't own it but iv'e swatched it at sephora and these shadows are REALLY close! The pigmentation on them is great too!!!! I found them on an end cap that was marked as "stocking stuffers" and they were only 99 cents. :)

  48. Has anyone tried the 28 Neutral Palette that you can get from Coastal Scents, BHCosmetics, and makeupgeek?

    ReplyDelete
  49. You should add the Revealed Palette from Coastal Scents! It's a color for color dupe for both Naked and Naked 2, and apparently the quality is amazing! (:

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sonia kaskuk's all matte palette is a more affordable dupe for UD's naked basics, and it has more colours!
