Review: CoverGirl Blast Flipstick Blendable Lip Duo in Flashy

I recently received one of the new CoverGirl Blast Flipstick Lipcolors for review, so today I'd like to share some swatches and thoughts. And before I forget, CoverGirl is BOGO1/2OFF at Rite Aid and Walgreens this week (through tomorrow, 5/5). Also, CVS is running a sale on CoverGirl this week: if you spend $10 on any CoverGirl products (excludes LashBlast mascaras), you'll get $3 back in Extra Bucks.

CoverGirl Blast Flipstick Lipcolor in Flashy
(retail: around $7.99, 0.134 oz)

Available in 13 shades, CoverGirl Blast Flipsticks are dual-ended lip colors that are paired in complimentary shades that you can wear alone or together.

The sticks themselves are of the narrow variety (not as wide as traditional lip colors), allowing for nice precision during application:

Flashy contains a shimmery pink on one end (the pink actually contains some silver sparkle that my camera did not pick up), and a deep, intense magenta-purple on the other end (there's a violet-blue flash to this color, which might be why it's named "Flashy"):

Here's a pic of me wearing both shades together (I tried to blend equal parts of each color together for this look):

In person, this lip color is just as vivid and intense as it appears in my photos. Flashy is not for the faint of heart! When both colors are worn together, the deep purple shade totally dominates the lighter, pink shade, and no matter how much of the pink I apply over the purple, the purple refuses to become more subdued. So unless you were to wear the light pink all by itself (or use just a touch of the purple on top of the pink),  this will be one of those "notice me" shades would look absolutely stunning on deeper skintones (or fairer skintones if you have some sass, which I don't, but now I'm rambling).

Because I'm pretty conservative when it comes to lip color, I cannot wear this shade in the daytime (it's a traffic stopper!) and even at night, it's a bit too intense for my skintone. For reference, I wear the shade Medium Beige in CoverGirl Tone Rehab foundation (you can click here to see my review of that foundation, by the way).

But let's put aside the color for a second and talk about the lipstick itself. I LOVE the texture, feel and staying power of this product. Admittedly, I'm more of a matte lipstick kind of gal, and I prefer thicker, drier lipsticks to sheer, glossier types of lipsticks. I'm not saying this lipstick is dry (for me, it's quite moisturizing) but since I'm used to drier lipsticks, you may not feel it's as moisturizing as I do if you prefer sheerer, more lightweight lipsticks.

There's a substantial, creamy, thicker feel to this lipstick, which gives it stellar staying power. I can easily get five to six hours of wear from this product. After it's worn away, it leaves behind a strong, even stain on my lips. Of course this might have to do with the boldness of the shade I received for review, and I obviously can't speak for the other shades in the range because I haven't tried them. But Flashy is built to last...and last.

The fragrance of this lipstick is pleasant (vanilla-based) and the flavor is vanilla-ish as well (with a note of generic "lipstick" flavor). I don't find the fragrance or flavor to last long on the lips--after about 10 minutes, the fragrance is gone and the flavor is barely detectable to me.

FINAL VERDICT: If you love bold, intense lip colors, you might very much enjoy Flashy. The staying power of this lipstick is quite impressive (five to six hours for me) and, even after it fades, it leaves behind a stain that can take me through the rest of my work day. Those who are used to sheer, glossy types of lipsticks might not appreciate the thicker, creamier feel of this product, but if you're a matte lipstick lover, chances are you'll find this one moisturizing and quite comfortable on the lips. I personally love the consistency of this product, because I know that when I put it on, it's going to last and last. I honestly cannot wait to try other shades in the range.

Have you tried any CoverGirl Blast Flipsticks yet? If so, what shades do you own and how do you like them?

  1. The deep purple looks like Sea Violet from L'Oreal of old. I love bold purple lippy but that shimmer pink would be of no use to me.

  5. I love the concept but none of the colors in this line appeal to me. I don't know. I haven't seen too many swatches online though. Blastflipstick has to be the clunkiest product name ever. I think CG has run the Blast thing into the ground.

  6. I got this color too some time back - I also had trouble with the color and had to really work with it before leaving the house! I like the concept of these, but something in the formula irritated my lips enough that I'm probably not going to try it again. I must have sensitive lips...lol. I'd be interested in reading about the other colors though - thanks for the review!

  8. Love the color! Also, what setting do you have your camera on for your lip swatches? I can never get mine to look as good as yours! And what camera do you use? :)

  9. I got this very same color because oh my word it is gorgeous and looked fantastic with my skin color and all I loved it so much! However it ended up making my lips feel very chapped and raw. It also left a really awful weird bright pink almost coral-ish stain behind that lasted for days and looked awful on me. I thought maybe I was wrong and the stain was from another one of my older lipsticks that I had worn that day (even though it had never given me that problem and wasn't that color) so I swatched it and the other lipstick on the back of my hand, left it on for about 1-2 minutes then wiped it off and the old lipstick removed cleanly the blast flipstick however left that same bright pink/coral color behind and it remained on my hand for the next 4 days through showers and multiple hand washings. I might be the only one who experienced this but it makes me look at the flipstick with longing because I adore the purple color but I can't deal with the awful raw and stained lips.

  10. That is a close dupe for the new Violet Shimmer from Estee Lauder. It's pretty (and about $10 cheaper!)

  11. As much as I would love to jump in the fashion trend, ombre lips are just not for me. Plus, I feel this lipstick gives quite a cheap finish, that I absolutely hate.

  12. I'm more of a natural eye make up with a bold lip color. I purchased "Smooch" but was nervous about the darkness of the darker end. I was very happy with the color it actually ended up looking like once I put it on. As far as the 'shimmer' end of the stick, it's not really my thing, and I wish that I knew what color the other end is, so I could just buy that.
I don't know how you kept it on for 6 hours, is there some kind of primer type thing that you use? It left the lip stain, which I liked and appreciated, but it didn't look right with the stuffs left on the edges of my lips. Like an unwanted lip liner.
