Sears to feature drugstore beauty brands

Longtime readers might remember a news article I posted back in 2009 about how Sears was planning to open expanded beauty departments in stores located in LA, New York and Chicago. Well, I guess this plan was a hit, because I just spotted the following article today:

(from drugstorenews.com)
Following the success of its 13-store test in 2010, Sears has announced that it now is expanding its in-store cosmetic departments to more than 100 stores and online.

The staffed beauty departments include such mass brands as Revlon, L'Oréal, Maybelline and CoverGirl. The concept also includes nail care from Sally Hansen, Nicole by OPI and Essie, as well as skin care and fragrances.

"We are pleased to offer our customers a comprehensive assortment of the cosmetics, skin care and nail care brands not typically found in department stores at the mall," stated Gary Schettino, VP and GMM of Sears men's apparel and center core at Sears Holdings. "Our foray into beauty creates the perfect complement to our new approach to fashion at Sears. The introduction of affordable and well-known brands is another example of our continued commitment to offer our customers incredible value at a total style destination."

Sears shoppers: are you happy about this news? Thoughts?

  1. I rarely go to Sears so I would only be excited about this IF they had exclusives only to Sears or had awesome sales. Otherwise its just easier to go to the drugstore.

  2. So, they're turning into K-Mart, basically? :P

  3. My Local Sears just got a beauty department a few weeks ago. I saw posh brushes, Iman, Milani, Nyc,(um... I think cover fx?)and a pretty wide range of well known skincare brands. Oh and Sears has sales too, like Buy one get one 1/2 offs, last time i went.

  4. This is too funny you posted this...cause last Thurs. I went to Sears and was so surprised to see drugstore makeup! I live further south of LA in San Bernardino,Ca. I meant to email you G and ask if you knew about this change...but completely forgot until right now when I read this. :)
I think it's a great addition to Sears. I didn't see any type of sales going on, and it did look like regular prices as drugstores. So all in all I think this would be more of a convienence thing. If I'm at the mall where my Sears is I can do a one stop shopping trip. <3

  5. I hope they do that here in Puerto Rico! I went to Sears last week and notice they removed a big counter from a high end brand, wonder if it would be for the drugstore products?

  6. Do they at least have testers?

  7. Know what's funny? Back like two years ago I started shopping in Sears for makeup because they were the only ones who carried e.l.f. near me. But I've been coming back because they have awesome sales and great stock! I feel like you just blew the lid off the "Sears Secret" G! :)

  8. This is great - I shop for Cosmetics at Sears' sister store Kmart, all the time - large selection and inventory and often discontinued colors are placed in the back spots behind other colors. Also my closest Kmart has been putting out clearnce bins of makeup and I've stocked up on some great Revlon, Cover Girl, Rimmel, etc. The reward card can be used at either store (you get points for every dollar spent). So if I buy a large appliance or tires or something, I can splurge on makeup. The online section at Kmart/Sears is also very good.

  10. My local Sears already have this department up. I found that most of the items they offer are more expensive than Target or Walmart, but they do offer Buy One, Get One 50% Off deals on certain brands. Not sure if that's permanent, but when I went, I bought 2 Sally Hansen Nail Polish, which were bogo 50% off. Also bought a Revlon polish for $5, but Revlon didn't have the bogo deal.

  11. I think it's a fun idea. Actually I LOVED Sears' Circle of Beauty makeup and skin care, still have a lot of it (I bought TONS of stuff when they were discontinuing it), and I'm still hoping that just maaaaybeee they'll bring it back. But any place is a good place to have makeup available, IMO, heehee!

  12. Hey, I can't argue more stores carrying drugstore makeup! I don't know if they've done this in Canada yet, but I'm going there sometime this week so I'll report back.

  13. I just did a Sears cosmetic reset in the northern Virginia Washington dc area. I do merchantising and it was major work. We had to do all the shelving and place all the cosmetics up. It was fun because I love makeup

  14. This seems odd because Sears has always meant to me riding lawn mowers, washer and dryers and Dicky overalls. lol

I always wonder if Sears will make it after Christmas. When I did merchandising there, when I lived in VA Beach, they had so much stuff that didn't sell and was on clearance, it was insane! They had so much overstock that the buyer should have been fired.

The makeup dept isn't going to have me running into Sears. However, if anyone wants to shop in a store that isn't crowded at all and is OK with mot finding any associates to help you out, you'll be quite happy at Sears.

  15. Wow! Thank you all so much for all the great feedback. How exciting that some of you already have the new and improved beauty departments at your local Sears stores!

I didn't know that Sears ran BOGO1/2OFF sales OR that they had a rewards program, so thanks to everyone who confirmed that.

I heard from a lovely Twitter follower that Sears also carries Bloom cosmetics, which used to be at Sephora back in the day. That's pretty exciting since I haven't seen Bloom products in a long, long time!

Thanks again, everyone, for taking the time to share your thoughts and info here! xo
