Review: Maybelline Limited Edition Queen of New York 100 Years Collection Colorsensational Lipstick in Purposeful Mauve

So I had been looking for the Maybelline 100th anniversary collection pretty much ever since I showed you the displays back in middle of April (click HERE if you missed that post). I finally found a small display with only some of the products in this collection, so I did manage to take home one product...

Maybelline Limited Edition Queen of New York 100 Years Collection
Colorsensational Lipstick in Purposeful Mauve
(retail: $7.99, 0.15 oz.)

My full review, after the jump...

Made in USA

I love the special limited edition NYC skyline art on the packaging, don't you?

One swipe vs. three swipes

I've reviewed many Colorsensational Lipsticks over the years, and I'm guessing that if you're reading this, you've probably owned your fair share as well. So this review is just going to cover this specific color.

But just in case you are new to Colorsensational lipsticks, I find them to be very creamy and hydrating on the lips. The staying power can vary depending on the shade, but for the most part I can usually get up to about three hours of wear (this is not including the Moisture Mattes; we're only talking about the regular Colorsensational lipsticks here) before I feel the need to reapply. The fragrance and flavor of Colorsensational lipsticks have always caused some debate here on the blog--some of you can't stand the way these smell and taste, while others (like me), don't mind the flavor or fragrance at all. I do get the slight "Play-Doh" scent and flavor that some people say these have, but again, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm probably in the minority here, but I rather like the fragrance and flavor!

So on to the color of Purposeful Mauve. This one's hard to pin down. I was drawn to this color in the tube, because it looked like it could be a good warm, midtone pinky-brown. You know my love of pinky-brown lippies ("buy all the pinky-browns" is my motto), so I was actually surprised to find that, on my lips, this color turns into a light, pinkish nude. It is far lighter on my medium-pigmented lips than I was anticipating. I wasn't looking for another nude lippie, so this was a bit of a letdown.

I so badly wanted to show you a lip swatch of this color so that you could see how different it looks in the hand swatches vs. my lips, but I could not for the life of me capture the color accurately on my lips in photos. I would rather show you no lip swatch at all, than show you a completely inaccurate photo that will give you absolutely no idea of what this color really looks like. So I think the important thing to take away from this review is that this color looks pretty true-to-tube on my hand, but on my lips it's a whole different story. This is obviously going to vary depending on the pigmentation of your lips, but I just don't want anyone to be surprised if they're hoping for a midtone pinky-brown shade and end up with a light, pinkish nude. You've been warned.

FINAL VERDICT: Not what I was hoping for, but it's a pretty color nonetheless. I think that, for most people, this lip color is probably going appear as a warm nude with pink undertones or a Your Lips But Better type of shade at best. If you were hoping for a deeper, more midtone shade, I'm not sure you'll get it here, unless your natural lip pigmentation is very fair.

Do you own any of the lipsticks from the Queen of New York collection? If so, please do share your thoughts with us below--I would love to know how you're liking this collection!

  1. I love the swatch on your arm. I may have to hunt this one down. I love pinky brown lippies, too, but this looks kind of a like a sheer rose that leans nude, which is very appealing to me.

    1. I actually wish it were more rose on me. It really ends up turning to a light pinkish nude on my lips...if it were deeper and had more brown to it I'd be in love. I would love to know what it looks like in you if you get it! :)

    2. I'm going to hit Bed Bath & Beyond, because I saw a display there. See if it catches my eye. I was looking for the Baby Lips, but they didn't have them. (Oddly, those are at Rite Aid, along with what looks like a full display.) I did pick up the LE blush, which is really pretty. And the Ra-Ra Red Baby Lips is pretty; more pigmented than the regular BL.

    3. I picked this up. I do like it a lot. I really wish Maybelline would dial down the powdery scent of its lipsticks, though. But I have others and get used to it, but at first, distracting! It is more a pale pink-nude. I really was hoping it would be more like your swatch, a bit rosier, but it wasn't. I don't dislike it, but I was hoping for more pink and brown.

  3. There is another color in this line, Strike a Rose, that looks to be a perfect dupe for a Guerlain lipstick I own called R'eve D'or. I need to get it and do a comparison. It's a gorgeous color!!

    1. Yes, I almost bought that one - - very NARS Orgasm -ish. But I felt like it was almost a bit too shimmery/frosty for my tastes, so I left it behind. :(

  4. I got it as well and experienced the same thing. It's not really brown and it's not really pink. It reminds me a bit of MAC's Twig. It almost has a reddish undertone on me. I'm finding that on my skin tone with my over pigmented lips, it looks best if I mix a lighter pink shade over it. Then I'm able to get the coveted pink-brown we're all coveting.

    1. Oh I wish it looked like Twig on me! Lol! It just reads as a light nude with strong pinkish undertones on me. :( But I like your idea of layering...will give that a shot! :)

    2. How about a post for top pinky-brown lipsticks? I have more lipsticks than I'll ever need, but I can't resist a pink-brown lipstick.

  7. I got Purposeful Mauve, Berry Chic and the Magenta one at Walgreen which was BYGO 1/2 off. They only had one of each color in the huge end cap display. The mauve looks like my lips, but not better, the Berry is streaky, but love the Magenta color, but berry colors look best on me, haven't met one that I didn't like.

  8. My all time favourite shade from the Colour Sensational line is Born With It 015. Nude pretty pink. Obsessed with it, bought a tonne so I won't ever run out. Second favourite is from The Buffs, Blushing Beige.

  11. Did you get the Makeup Forever birthday gift from sephora last year? The swatch reminds me of that. If you did and you think it's a dupe then that would be awesome because that's one of my favorite lipsticks of all time!
