Review: New L.A. Colors Color Craze Nail Polishes from Dollar Tree (Matte Glitters and Milky Glitters)

As far as I can tell, the new crop of  L.A. Colors Color Craze shades first started to surface at Dollar Tree around January or February. I only recently have been able to find them at my local Dollar Trees, so I apologize if some of you don't consider these "new" but they're definitely new to me!

There were lots of new-to-me shades at my Dollar Tree a few weeks ago, but three matte glitters and one milky glitter came home with me. It's been quite a while since I reviewed any Color Craze nail polishes, so let's take a look at these babies!

L.A. Colors Color Craze Nail Polishes
(retail: $1 each at Dollar Tree, 0.44 oz.)

Fruity

Fruity

Fruity contains yellow square matte glitter, as well as yellow, pink, orange and lime green hex matte glitter in a clear base.

Craze

Craze

Craze contains multi-colored matte hex glitter and blue metallic hex glitter, in a clear base.

Cupid's Arrow

Cupid's Arrow

Cupid's Arrow contains various sizes of light, medium and dark pink and white matte hex glitter in a clear base.

Candy Sprinkles

Candy Sprinkles

Candy Sprinkles contains various sizes of multi-colored metallic hex glitter in a sheer, milky lavender-pink base. This combination reminds me of the Blue Cross holiday polishes that have been popping up at Rite Aid for the past several years (see my swatch of the lavender milky glitter here).

But of course, Candy Sprinkles is just one in a loooong line of lookalikes for Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop (retail: $20, 0.5 oz.). If you don't already have Candy Shop or any of its dupes, well you now have a $1 version you can grab. Yay!

Base colors:
Sinful Colors Curry Up, Milani Blue Jay, CoverGirl Pink Lady

Since three of the four polishes I purchased are glitter toppers, I wanted to show you the polishes I used for the base colors for the swatches below. I did not use a base color for Candy Sprinkles. For Fruity, I used Sinful Colors Curry Up. For Craze, I used Milani Blue Jay. For Cupid's Arrow, I used CoverGirl Pink Lady.

For all of these swatches, I used two coats of NYC Grand Central Station as top coat, just to give my nails an extra smooth, extra glossy finish. Without top coat, all of these polishes have a dull finish (not matte, but just not super shiny). All of these polishes are slightly bumpy to the touch without top coat, so I definitely suggest two coats of a nice, thick top coat, just to make things really smooth.

Candy Sprinkles - three coats, no base color.

Fruity - one coat over Sinful Colors Curry Up.

Craze- one coat over Milani Blue Jay.

Cupid's Arrow - one coat over CoverGirl Pink Lady.

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by these polishes and I'm super happy with each of them. Sometimes I find that the Color Craze polishes can be hit or miss (I own some that are just so sheer, they require four or more coats for decent opacity and saturation), but all four of these polishes are in the "hit" category for me.

Candy Sprinkles is sheer and requires two coats or three for good opacity (in its defense, milky glitters like this kind of have to be sheer, otherwise you won't see the sparkle of the metallic glitter as much). But they are easy coats to apply (no fishing for glitter required) and the opacity builds up effortlessly with no streaking or careful maneuvering requiring. This polish also dries very quickly.

Fruity is also great in terns of application. No fishing required--there's plenty of glitter on the brush every time you pull it from the bottle, and the clear base is not super goopy or watery. The amount of glitter in this polish is abundant, which I think is all we can really ask for when it comes to these types of polishes, right? Application is as you would expect--you can't really brush this type of polish on; strategic dabbing is required for good glitter placement. Dry time is average for this type of polish. I HATE glitter polishes that take forever to dry (or never dry at all) and this isn't one of them. Sure, this doesn't dry as quickly as a non-glitter polish, but I wasn't waiting around forever, either. A good quick-dry top coat helps speed things along, of course. So definitely use one with these glitters.

Craze and Cupid's Arrow are exactly like Fruity in every way (as described above).

The only negative things I can say about these polishes are that, for the glitter toppers, there was some very slight bubbling (you can kind of see it in my swatches) that mostly occurred with Fruity. But I honestly cannot see it with my naked eye (I only discovered it was there after I saw it in these photos). So I don't think it will be noticeable for you either, if it happens at all for you. Also, and this is kind of nit-picky, the stem on these brushes is pretty short. For now, that's not a problem because these bottles are full, but I can foresee it being problematic to pick up glitter with these brushes when the bottle is more than halfway empty. But I mean, for $1, you can just go out and buy another bottle if it becomes difficult to use these later on down the road.

FINAL VERDICT: If you're a matte glitter lover (or glitter lover in general) I think all four of these polishes are most certainly worth $1 a piece at your local Dollar Tree. I absolutely love that matte glitters are becoming easier and easier to find these days, and I especially love that now everyone can experiment with them without breaking the bank. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Fruity because you know I'm a sucker for square glitter (I can't wait to wear it over a neon orange on my toes this summer).

Do you own any of the new L.A. Colors Color Craze polishes that are now at Dollar Tree? If so, I would love to hear which shade you have, and how they're working for you!

  1. I got candy sprinkles at my local family dollar. I haven't tried it but it looks so pretty in your review. I have also been trying to track down the new la colors gel polishes, I can't find them anywhere.

    1. I have been seeing the gel line at Family Dollar only. I think they tend to go quickly so keep checking if you have the store near you. They are gorgeous and the ones I have are one coaters!

  2. Every time I go to the dollar tree I pick up a couple of these nail polishes, so I have a variety of colors. And I must say they have all impressed me, great color pay off in two coats, no streaking even on lighter colors and they last a long time. I have not had chipping issues with any of them yet. They are quickly becoming my favorites and they are only a buck!

  3. This line makes some really great polishes, especially for the price. Cactus is one of my all time favorite greens.

  5. Ohhh. I just made a promise (somewhat half-hearted) to refrain from buying more makeup for a while. Even the person I promised said, "Except nail polish, right?"

Your swatches are so nice! Those glitters are so cute, and at a dollar a pop, well, they won't break the budget.

Question: does matte glitter remove easier than other types of glitter? I don't think I have a true matte glitter in my collection (quelle horrreur!).

    1. In my experience, matte glitters are just as difficult to remove, unfortunately. But, they are ever so cute! :-)

  11. I have these too, nice for the price. Walmart currently has two $5 sets of color craze polish in mini bottles with extras like nail stickers, toe separators, etc. I got a mini bottle of craze and another glitter in my set.

  13. Oh I hear Sollar Tree calling me again. Since it's literally three blocks from my house. I love to shop there. I made brush holders with their candle holders and stickers. Turned out cute and forget the organizers to completely organize your house. I love it. I have to stay away from the Dollar Tree haul videos.

  15. I picked up Spring Flirt, which is similar to Candy Sprinkles but in a baby blue, and Speckled, which is another topper with mostly white glitters with some pale blue and pink. I tried the Spring Flirt tonight: it's slightly thick but not in an unmaneuverable way, more like it's just viscous rather than dry. Could use more glitter but I am not a fisher and a couple coats was good enough for my purposes.

DT also had a number of Revlon Colorstay polishes in various pinks and reds: I picked up one called Red Carpet. We'll see if it makes me look funny; reds are so difficult. And they had something called Physician's Formula Retro Glow that I gave to a friend.

My DT also rearranged so they have several shelves just for the L.A. Colors, organized by color, not just pegs with all the colors mixed together. Ours is not the largest DT I've seen, so that's quite a commitment to summer color.

  16. L.A. Colors polish does not last at all. It usually takes a few days before my polish begins to fade. But L.A. Colors chips, cracks and fades within 24 hours. It's a bit maddening. You almost HAVE to buy the more expensive polishes to get it to last for close to a full week.
