Big Changes to Color Club The Uptown

Bye bye, gorgeous!

As many of you know, The Uptown is my all-time favorite Color Club shade. To refresh your memory, here are some pics (worn shiny and mattifed) from my original review:

I have some very sad news for you today if you are also a big fan of The Uptown. Keep reading for the scoop...

Thanks to my pal @sunonwater11 on Instagram for letting me know that Color Club has officially changed the formula of The Uptown, effective this month (September). It is now a completely different polish. @sunonwater11 let me know that etailer Llarowe included a note on their The Uptown listing to let customers know of the change:

And @sunonwater11 also let me know that a blogger on Instagram swatched the NEW version and posted some pics HERE

Did you click that link? OK good. Now that you've seen swatches of the new version, you can see that Llarowe's description is 100% accurate. The Uptown is no longer a jelly. It's an opaque, deeper purple. And it no longer contains large, color-shifting flakes. The flakes are now small and more like shimmer, and they appear to be mostly silver in nature.

Needless to say, I'm incredibly sad about the change. I'm assuming that Color Club no longer has access to the materials required to manufacture the original formula so...it is what it is (my boyfriend hates that saying but it seems quite fitting right now!).

I just wanted to let YOU know about this, so that you have some time to get back-ups of the original version if you're also a fan of this shade. Also, if The Uptown has been on your lemming list for a while and you find it out "in the wild," you might want to get it ASAP before the new version fully takes over. I bought my bottle at a Bed Bath & Beyond with an extended beauty department, if that helps. As of the time of this post, there's at least one Amazon seller that is selling The Uptown, and their listing says "15 left". I don't know if those 15 bottles are the original version or the new version, but it might be worth looking into if you can't find it locally. There's also eBay, but I would hurry before everyone and their mother gets wind of this change and starts trying to sell the original version for $100 a bottle (because you KNOW that's going to happen).

Thanks again, @sunonwater11, for the heads-up about this. I really appreciate it!

  1. Welll...phoo. (I bought three bottles a long time back, and I think I'm just going to have to be satisfied with that.)

This, and the recent "formula changes" by other companies, make me want to stop posting manicure swatches altogether. Because, hell, if a color changes that significantly, not discontinuing the shade is kind of a "bait and switch", isn't it?

  2. Well that's a drastic change! Gonna run and check my stash. Pretty sure I have it!

  3. Sally Hansen Treasure Hunt, anyone? Thanks for the heads up, G, I'll cherish my bottle!

Btw, both Head2Toe Beauty and Trans Design have it in stock, but I've no idea if it's the old version or the new.

    1. Psst, I think you mean Hidden Treasure lol. It is gorgeous and such a downer that they changed the formulas on both HT and Pacific Blue...their 2 most gorgeous polishes. smdh

  4. Aww man I live in Texas so no brick and mortar stores that sell it. Gonna have to risk buying it on amazon, hope it's the old version!!

    1. T.Lillian.N try Bed, Bath, & Beyond. There's at least one with a Harmon's makeup section in every major city. There are 3 in the Dallas area. (On that note, I'd be happy to look for this for you when I go to BBB on Thursday. Just email me at paradigm.rouge at gmail dot com.)

    1. If you live in a big city, find a nail supply. I know Houston has a bunch. I'm bummed I didn't take the time to go last week when visiting. Won't have access to a nail supply now for months.

  6. Yep, gone from Amazon.

I have been meaning to get this for a long time. I found a store called LA Lacquer that has it (well, a picture of the old version) so I ordered from there. I'm concerned it's not the same but I have no ability to purchase locally.

  7. Remember to check your Bed Bath & Beyond for mini bottles! Also, the Urban Outfitters "Mystic" polish is very similar, just a bit more sheer <3

    1. All the BB&B in my area don't have an extended beauty department. So sad

    2. That's where I found mine a few days ago! Grabbed it up because I saw this post and was curious.

  8. Wow, this is sad news indeed. So glad I have the original. Now I'll have to ration it because I know I'll never find it at a store. Again, this is ridiculous that another company is changing the color but not the name. At least we got a heads up about it, however, would've been nice to hear from the company itself instead of a third party seller. I can just hear the dollar signs being racked up by all the ebay sellers. Once this info gets legs all bets are off! Oh and the new color is ok, but nothing epic like the original!

  9. Just bought two from Ebay, my original bottle is a bit old and thick. Hope it's the old formula!

  10. I just don't understand why they don't discontinue the first formula, and rename the second version. How hard could it be/ could've called it "Downtown" or something...

  11. So annoying...why not just discontinue it?? So glad I snagged one of the old ones awhile ago

  12. I saw this change in July when I went to their booth at Cosmoprof. Asked if it was incorrectly labeled and they said that this new color was always how it looked (but I knew better).

  13. Aw, what a shame! I wonder why they did this...

  14. Where can you buy color club?

  15. I still haven't tried this, but I think I spotted a mini at a local Bed Bath & Beyond. I think I'll have to go back and try and get it. Why keep the name and change the formula, though? Makes no sense.

  16. Oh no, why is Color Club just doing that? I fortunately have the mini bottle of it, but I wanted to buy the bigger bottle one day. :( They had to discontinue the old version!

  17. This is crazy! Why would they do such a thing? It was perfect!

  18. I have never seen Color Club in my area. Where can we purchase these and are they a good nail polish - what would you compare them to? Thanks so much!!

  19. Heads up ladies, a seller on EBay has the old version for $5.95 free shipping. I just purchased one. If you search it in Ebay I'm sure you'll find it. :)

  20. Ive seen a dupe of this polish also called the uptown at duane reade. Its part of their prevail polish line. Last i checked it was the old formula so hopefully theyre not changing this one too!

  21. After reading this post a few days ago, I bought a bottle at BB & B today because I couldn't pass it up. So sad this will be going away, but glad I'll get to try it in the short term.

  22. I sincerely hope the 2 bottles I just ordered from the birchbox store a few days ago are the original formula or else I am going to be sorely disappointed. The picture on the site looked like the original.... I guess I'll find out on Monday!

  23. Beware the online listings- I bought 8 bottles on Amazon from Head to Toe and though they said original formula they are NOT. Ugh.

  24. I audibly gasped at the new polish! The Uptown was on my wish list since I started blogging but when I got my hands on the similar Nfu Oh Opal "Nfu 51" I stopped actively looking for the Color Club version. It's a shame because the new polish is really not as pretty :(

  25. I stopped by my BBB and they had a ton--both large and mini bottles! They had just pulled all of the discontinued Color Club, so ask a clerk to check the shelf pulls!

  26. Waaahhhhhh! In just got mine in and no... Not the original formula... My hunt continues...

  27. Lol I don't suppose anyone would want to trade an original formula Pacific Blue for an original formula The Uptown?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can confirm that Trans Design is selling the new formula. I ordered it a few days ago before I even heard about this. I was confused when I opened it, and went looking for answers. Disappointed that Color Club didn't change the name or discontinue the polish to avoid the confusion.

  29. Does anyone know if any of the other Color Club shades will be discontinued/reformulated? I have a few other shades on my wishlist (Beyond, Cosmic Fate, Snowflakes, Port-folio, Winter Affair, etc.)

  30. Bummer! I'm glad that I have the original. Before I had it, I got a really good result layering Essie Shine of the Times over OPI Dutch Ya Just Love OPI. I would rather that they discontinue a polish if they can't make it anymore than create a different polish under the same name.

  31. I just got a bottle that I ordered on Ebay. It cost me $15.44 ($12.99 + $2.45 shipping) but it was worth it. Such a GORGEOUS polish. I have a ton of flakie polishes but I just had to have this one too lol.
