Beauty Bite: e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow in Bark

The e.l.f. Baked Eyeshadows debuted on the e.l.f. website back in the summer of 2012, but they only started to appear at Target stores in 2013 (I believe they were first spotted at Target in the spring of 2013, but don't quote me on that).

I actually had a negative experience with Enchanted, which was the first shade I purchased in this range (there are ten shades total). I found it to have a very hard consistency with zero color payoff unless I foiled the heck out of it (applied it with a damp brush) . I didn't even want to continue testing it for review after trying to use it a few times.

But after talking to some of you about these eyeshadows, apparently I picked the only shade in the range that's difficult to work with (just my luck) so I put my trust in you and picked up an additional shade, Bark, at my local Target about a month ago. So here's my quick take on this one!

e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow in Bark
(retail: $3 at Target stores and on the e.l.f. website, 0.12 oz)

 PROS:
  • True to its description. You get a subtle wash of color when worn dry (without primer) and very intense pigmentation when applied with a damp brush (foiled).
  • Excellent pigmentation when worn over primer (my favorite way to wear it).
  • Firm but easy-to-work-with consistency--you don't have to dig with your brush to pick up color. A few swipes with your brush should deliver all the color you need.
  • Excellent staying power when worn over primer (I can get a full 8 hours before I start to see major fading).
  • Versatile shade of brown that would work with a variety of skintones (it's not too warm--it has some cool undertones to it).
  • Lightweight, functional packaging (not big, bulky or heavy).
  • Strong latch that shuts securely and doesn't open up unexpectedly.

CONS:
  • The lid feels a tiny bit flimsy because it's made of thin plastic. Although it clicks shut firmly, I could see the lid itself cracking over time if you're rough with your eyeshadows.

THE LAST BITE: Once again, your fabulous advice did not steer me in the wrong direction (for the record, it never does!). I'm so glad that some of you convinced me to try another shade in this range, because Bark is quickly becoming one of those shades I reach for when I just don't want to think too hard about my makeup. It looks great as a crease shade and also as a wash of color from lashline to crease and then blended upward. You know I must love this shadow when the only "con" I can think of is that the lid might crack one day! If you're looking for a new "workhorse" shade for your stash that you can rely on, I say give this one a whirl. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Do you own any e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadows? If so, what shades do you own and how do you like them? I'd love to hear your recommendations about other must-haves in this range!

  1. I don't have any of these shadows since I don't feel like they are unique colors. I own two of their baked blushes though, and my experience with them is not that great. I hardly get any color payoff if I try to use them dry. I think it's probably just me, but I always apply too much when I use them wet, and it kind of messes up my foundation and powder underneath. Have you tried the baked blushes? Do you maybe have any tips for me on baked blushes in general?

    1. I haven't tried their baked blushes, but if you want intense color payoff without having to apply wet, I HIGHLY recommend Milani's baked blushes. I love every single shade in the range...search my blog if you'd like to see swatches (I've done multiple reviews of them over the years). Hope that helps!

    2. I have one of their baked blushes - I really like it - subtle, yet not washed out. I have a medium/olive complexion and dry skin, so I usually avoid dry blushes. The reason I tried this one was because their liquid blush didn't come in any more-red-than-pink shades. I'm always amazed how the same product can be so different for people!

  2. Oh crap... enchanted is precisely the one I bought a while back... I haven't used it yet. I can't believe it won't work! It's such a pretty color! Ugh.
I do like this color though... although I have most of elf's little black book palettes so I'm sure I can find this color in one of the pans. One of the reasons I hardly buy the single eye shadows.

    1. Hopefully you can get your Enchanted to work, but I couldn't do it! I would swipe and swipe with my brush and NO color would be picked up unless my brush was basically soaking wet. :(

  3. A bunch of the YouTube gurus were raving about the Burnt Plum shade in this range this fall - I have both Toasted and Burnt Plum but I honestly haven't really played with either one!

  4. I have all the singles and greatly enjoy them. So much so that I would buy all the baked palettes but apparently they are a different formula. My absolute favorite is Burnt Plum, such a beautiful and unique color. They released four new colors recently that are only available online, I have used three of them so far and they were all beautiful.. a dark chocolate, a bright purple, an ivory, and a really pretty copper.

  7. Chocolate Dreams, Moonlight, Purple Passion, and Burnt Plum are all amazing. Purple Passion, especially, is gorgeous foiled. Not too red, not too blue, not too lavender - just a perfect medium purple.

  8. I highly recommend 'Toasted'. It is the most beautiful rose gold shade. It's probably my all time favourite single eyeshadow. xx

  9. Thanks for the review, G! I've never tried a baked shadow before, but this one seems like a good quality, inexpensive way to try it out. The color reminds me of the UD Naked palette, like a combination of Smog and Half Baked.

  14. I almost picked up the pink shade, not sure what the name is, from Target. I wanted to use it as a pink highlight. I've seen it swatched in person, it's really pretty but just ended up buying 4 eyeshadows from the Inglot counter to use as face highlights.

  15. I have a studio baked elf palette in California and I hate it :(
