Swatches: Chunky Nail from the Halloween 2013 Pumpkin Polish Collection

You know I love my Pumpkin Polishes, so I was very excited to FINALLY find the glitter Pumpkin Polishes for Halloween 2013 at my Rite Aid the other day. Here's what the display looks like:

(NOTE: There is also a glow-in-the-dark Pumpkin Polish display, which you can see here. If you're looking for the Pumpkin Polishes and you don't live near a Rite Aid, check the comments on this post. Several kind readers have shared info about other retailers across the nation that also carry these polishes every Halloween.)

Sadly, there was only ONE polish in this display that I didn't  recognize from last year:

There were some empty spots in this display when I got to it, so perhaps there are other glitters that are new for 2013, but I didn't get to see them. Boo!

Here's my review of the polish that I think is new for 2013:

Pumpkin Polish in Chunky Nail
(retail: $3.99 at Rite Aid)

If you've never seen Pumpkin Polishes in person, they have little ghosts and witches on the handles.

The formula is Big Three Free

This polish contains small holographic and black hex glitter in a clear base.

First, the name of this polish cracks me up. Chunky Nail? I mean, I can think of about 20 other more fitting names for this glitter combo, but moving on...

The formula of this polish is difficult to work with. The clear base is quite thin, so when you brush the polish onto your nail, the glitter applies in uneven clusters. I had to do some serious "dabbing" to get the glitter where I wanted it. Also, the clear base dries to a "foggy" finish. It's not quite matte, but it's not clear either. You can see the fogginess best on my ring finger above (second from the right).

Dry time was poor-to-average. It took a while for this polish to dry in the areas where there was a higher glitter concentration. The other areas dried at a normal rate.

FINAL VERDICT: I love that there's black glitter in this polish, but I think this is one of those combos that looks better in the bottle than on the nail. I don't think it's worth $3.99, but if you can get it on clearance after Halloween, it might be worth a shot. The fogginess kind of bugs me, and the overall feeling this polish leaves me with can be best described as "meh." I love the Pumpkin Polishes every year, but if this is all we have in terms of new offerings for Halloween 2013, I certainly hope that Blue Cross does a better job with Holiday 2013 (their Holiday 2012 collection was so much fun). Heck, they did a great job with their Summer 2013 collection as well. So hopefully there's another Halloween 2013 Pumpkin Polish display lurking out there somewhere that has some new, fun glitters, because Chunky Nail just isn't quite doing it for me.

Once again, if your'e looking for the Pumpkin Polishes and you don't live near a Rite Aid, check my note at the top of this post.

  1. Maybe it would look neat in a jelly sandwhich? I was thrown off by chunky nail too...but that's what I call the texture polish sometimes Bc I can't think of the right name :p

  2. I like the copper bar glitter, but I'm with you--Chunky Nail is a resounding meh.

  3. I think they're all called "Chunky Nail" - I have one with holo crescent-shapped and hex glitters, and the sticker on the bottom says "Chunky Nail" lol. Unless you meant the glitter line in general - in which case, I can only agree that it sounds awful. =P Thanks for the review. ^_^

  4. I just picked up the green & chunky nail & mine has crescent moons too, really had to dig around to get one moon on each nail. But it was 50% Goff at rite aid so I can't complain :)
