The Wednesday Question (and a reminder)

Before we get to this week's question, here's your reminder that the

If you use razors, what's your current favorite brand/model, and why?

For more than a year now, I've been really, really happy with the original Gillette Venus razor. This razor has the least expensive refills in the Venus family, and I find that it gives me a close shave and very little (if any) irritation, even when the razor becomes a bit dull. Plus, one cartridge lasts me a long time if I don't shave my legs every single day (hey, it happens. I'm lazy sometimes).

  1. Mine has been the mach 3 since I was a teen. It gives a close smooth shave. Way better than any woman's razors. I love men's razors!

    1. How funny! For probably the last 20 years (until recently) all I ever used were men's razors. But now that I'm getting older, I find that they tend to irritate my skin a bit (the skin gets thinner as we age, so that's my theory as to why I'm super-sensitive to them now). Totally bums me out because they DO give such an incredibly close shave.

    2. I agree, I've been using the Schick Hydro 5 blade system for men and it is the only razor that gets every bit of stubble on the bikini area, and without irritation. I contacted the company since they sold to Enegizer more than a year ago and they were able to confirm in writing that they, nor anyone else does animal testing for them! :) Prior to that I had been using blades by The American Safety Razor Company, who are one of the few brands of blades/razors that are totally cruelty-free.

    3. Btw- as for shave gel, I looove the fragrance-free formula from a brand called Every Man Jack.

  2. I love Venus razors, but my boyfriend is trying to get me into double edged razors because they're more sustainable/less expensive over time. They look both badass and moderately dangerous, so we'll see. Really looking forward to seeing others' reviews - good question, miss G!

    1. Same here! I take advantage of the drugstore deals. As long as it has more than 2 blades I'm not real picky.

  5. I also, for over 10 years, use the original Gillette Venus razor.

I have tried others like the Schick Hydro Silk razor that came in a Birchbox and even a couple of the newer Venus razors, but they don't give a close enough shave for me; I still end up with stubble and I think it's because the moisture strip things impede the razors from getting close enough to my skin

  6. Shame on me for not knowing the actual brand name, but I am loving a particular kind fro Dollar Tree. They're in a blue cardboard sleeve, the razors themselves are aqua, 4-pack. 4-blade, with some type of cushion/layer in btw each blade...they work so well! Repurchased many times.

ALS0, check out the CVS brand ladies 4-blade refills and razor. By far, the least expensive (yet best shave) system I have found.

  7. I've also been a Venus razor kind of girl for at least 10 years now. I've always bought the original one with the green handle. I tried the yellow one that they did with Olay - hated it. I tried the pink one which I think was for the bikini line maybe? Hated that too. I kept the pink handle though and now I just by the refills for the original and put them on the pink handle. I recently tried Rite Aids version of this razor in the disposable kind and they were ok. I needed something on vacation since I forgot my razor

  8. I went to Walgreens today! FINALLY picked up the Fergie WNW eye primer and the LE Milani shadow eyez (that I couldn't find anywhere else but at Walgreens!) I also FINALLY got the Herbal Essence old school shampoo...YAY! I'm looking forward to using that tomorrow! Overall, my total was going to be some $35...with the discount and coupon I had it was $27....! Thanks so much for letting us know G!

Also, to answer your question...I recently found this "store brand" razor pack that I LOVE! I use to swear by Venus as well but after you buy so many...eh, LOL! I'm actually saving up for a good epliator but I needed to shave (obviously) so I picked out those store brand razors and they turned out to be so much better than I expected and than the Venus ones! They are so sharp and haven't dulled! They were seriously under $5 for three of them (which is why I didn't expect much of them) but I lucked out!!! (:

  9. Schick intuition!! I'm on my third one. I love it because I think it does a good job and I don't have to add shaving cream. I have tried the hydrosilk I got in a birchbox and it was okay. I also am trying a venus one I just received in my $5 target box.

  10. Schick Quattro is my favorite, but I am currently also rotating with various Olay versions of the Venus due to coupons/good deals...they seem to be better than I remember from when I tried in the past, but still think for some reason I feel more comfortable with the Quattro.

I also use and love Kiss My Face Shave Cream, which I believe you've also mentioned in the past, G. :)

  11. I use an old fashioned double edged safety razor - the long handle Merkur - and either Feather or Merkur blades - Merkur are my preference, but the Feather are much, much cheaper. Like $0.10 cents a blade. I usually just use some cheap hair conditioner for shaving cream. Definitely has the edge in terms of cost and environmental concerns - I paid $30 or so for the Merkur, but I just ordered another DE with good reviews for $2.

  12. I love the Mach 3 by Gilette. I HAVE to have something that rinses out easily, other razors get clogged for me the first swipe. I have a lot of hair lol.

I use a homemade oil/sugar scrub mix to shave. (1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup oil. I like grapeseed oil, or rice bran oil. Whatever they have at Big Lots) I scrub/shave/gently scrub again. So soft! Just have to make sure to clean the tub afterwords, it's slippery. :)

  13. I am an Intuition girl through and through. Why not adding that extra step of shave cream really works for me. Its not like shave cream/gel takes that much more time or energy but I prefer not to. Ever since having my middle child (who is now 16) I have one patch of hair that just doesn't shave close. And until I started using the Intuition, everything started irritating me. So non irritated skin vs super close shave, non irritated skin wins hands down.

I just wish that they would come out with a drugstore version of this soon. My daughter just started shaving her legs this summer, and we are using them up quicker than when it was just me, and it is getting expensive. But the flip side is, she hasn't nicked herself at all. And who doesn't remember the horror show when we all started shavaing LOL.

  14. i have been pretty loyal to the Schick Quattro for several years, but after hearing that the refills for the Venus are so affordable, I may try that out to see if I like it!
As a teen, I never used shave gel (didn't really need it), but as you said, as we age, the skin thins out. I never liked the foaming gels, so these days, I use either Bikini Zone Anti-Bumps shave gel or the CVS version of it -- whichever is cheaper that day. I only need a tiny amount, so it lasts a nice long time, and it just provides a nice, slick surface for the razor to glide across without foaming up.

  15. Whatever is on sale or cheap. I feel very fortunate that Native Americans just don't have a lot of body hair. I can't even remember the last time I shaved my legs but it's well over 10 yrs ago. Unless you look really really close, you can't tell. The hair is so fine and so few of them. So I just shave under my arms with whatever.

  16. I'm still trying to figure out what razor I like best, since I find that most seem to miss some hair, probably because I tend to ingrowns. Lasering helped a lot there, but didn't get rid of all the hair. So far, Venus seems to be the best, though I liked those older Schick purple razors (Silk Effects, apparently), which are either discontinued or uncommon now. My husband LOVES safety razors, but I'm still learning to use them. I can tell you that Salux cloths do make it easier to get rid of dead skin, and get a closer shave, and are okay to use anywhere except your face.
