Review: ChapStick Limited Edition Cupcake Creations Collection

After I posted about how these new Limited Edition Cupcake Creations flavors from ChapStick were popping up in stores last month, I was sort of frantic about finding them. Much to my surprise, ChapStick reached out to me after my original post and offered to send me both flavors for review.

If you haven't spotted these in your area yet, and you're a dessert lover, I'm here to tell you that they're definitely worth the hunt. Take a peek:

ChapStick Limited Edition Cupcake Creations Collection
(retail: around $1.69 each, 0.15 oz)

Keep reading for my full review...

Let's start with Velvet Cupcake:

ChapStick Limited Edition Cupcake Creations Collection lip balm in Velvet Cupcake
(retail: around $1.69, 0.15 oz)

For the record, I'm a huge red velvet cake fan, and I love anything scented like red velvet (candles, lotion, you name it). So this is the ChapStick I wanted the most of the two, and I'm happy to tell you it did not disappoint. This doesn't just smell like regular chocolate cake (the main ingredient in red velvet cake is cocoa powder, I know, but it smells distinctly different from chocolate cake, to my nose). I don't know how ChapStick did it, but the essence of red velvet cake is there. It's chocolatey, creamy and a tiny bit spicy. And it tastes like red velvet cake too (I think I even detect a very, very slight cream-cheese-frosting note).

Tip: don't peel off the safety seal from the top of the lid--twist the lid off, while keeping the label intact, so that you can keep the cute cupcake graphic on the lid!

Next up, Cake Batter:

ChapStick Limited Edition Cupcake Creations Collection lip balm in Cake Batter
(retail: around $1.69, 0.15 oz)

Coming from someone who's owned her fair share of supposedly-cake-batter-scented products (body mists, lotions, shower gels, candles, etc.), the one thing I can tell you is that even though the label may say "cake batter," sometimes the scent is more along the lines of buttercream frosting (so different, aren't they?). This is NOT one of those products. Once again, ChapStick nailed it. To my nose, it smells like true, gooey vanilla cake batter that's sitting in a mixing bowl, about to be poured into a cake pan. I detect vanilla extract, sugar, butter...it's all there. And it tastes exactly like cake batter as well (not that I've ever licked a mixer after whipping up cake batter or anything...naw...not me.)

I love that the lip balms themselves are colored to match their names:

In case you're wondering, there is a very, VERY subtle tint to the Velvet Cupcake ChapStick. I had to go back and forth on the back of my hand about 20 times before I could detect even the faintest red tint, so you would have to really layer this one on thick to get the red tint to show up on your lips.

FINAL VERDICT: If you love bakery scents and/or lip products that smell and taste like bakery scents, I think it's definitely worth your while to hunt for these. Of all the limited edition flavors that ChapStick has released to date, these are my very favorites. Both the flavors and fragrances are spot-on, and hello! Could the packaging be any cuter? In terms of moisturization, I know that everyone's got their own opinions about ChapStick (it works wonders for some, while others don't find them hydrating enough) so let me just give you my personal take on these. For me, they work beautifully underneath lipsticks, tints, etc. If you have a lip color that's a tad drying on its own, I think ChapStick works wonderfully as a base because it's not super thick, so it won't dilute the pigmentation of your lip color. On its own, ChapStick isn't always hydrating enough for my chronically dry lips, so I reserve these to use a base for my drier lip colors.
PS: I want to thank several of you for the generous outpourings after my original ChapStick post. I had mentioned that I couldn't locate the ChapStick Limited Edition 2012 Holiday flavor, Apple Cider, in my area and that I really wanted it. So many of you offered to send me one and you have no idea how grateful and touched I was by your offers. I wanted to let you know that ChapStick sent me the Holiday 2012 flavors and, if you can still find them in your area (I've heard they've been spotted on clearance at Target), they're super yummy and definitely worth a look. Here's what they look like, in case you haven't seen them:
ChapStick Holiday 2012 Limited Edition flavors:
Candy Cane, Chocolate Truffle, Apple Cider

Have you purchased either of the ChapStick Limited Edition Cupcake Creations flavors yet? If so, please let us know where you spotted them (I've heard that they've landed at CVS and Walgreens so far) and what you think of them!

  3. I am all over the Cake Batter Chapstick... to the point where I bought two back ups. I introduced it to a friend of mine in Virginia a week ago, and we ended up on a hunt for the stuff... never did find it in her town. I came home, bought 2 from the store I'd found mine, and sent them to her. She's in love. :)

  4. I think I saw these at the registers at Walmart. They were in magnetic (?) things and sort of stuck to the back of a soda cooler or something.

  5. I have the candy cane chapstick .. I bought it last minute on a whim (I think it was at a checkout stand) and I've been obsessed. with. it. It's that good. It's not just regular minty, it really does feel candy cane-y.. and I don't even like to eat candy canes! I am a bit of a lip gloss/ lip balm/ lip anything addict and have a bunch of the new lip balm variations currently out (like baby lips, revlon lip butter, etc) but I keep finding myself reaching for this chapstick... and plus last month when I had a head cold and my nose area got all chapped I rubbed a bit of this minty goodness on and it was like heaven.

  8. Red Velvet is nice.. but Cake Batter is divine. A definite must have. As to performance I use them to top my lipstick on the go.. they are creamy enough to add slip and moisture without being so emollient that they break down the product. They work great with my Maybelline 24hr lipcolor which is quite sensitive to oily balms.

  12. I went out and bought these the very first you wrote about them. Your review on them is on point. I'm not a Chapstick lover because they really don't moisturize my lips, however, as you stated they're great for as a base for lipsticks, tints, etc.

  14. I first heard about the Cupcake Creations from you and immediately went on the search. A couple weeks later I found them hanging on a strip by the travel size products (of all places) at CVS, sort of on the corner of the aisle. I agree with everything you said here about them! Love 'em. I still see Apple Cider and Candy Cane at Walmart all the time, but these are loose tubes-- not on a card. They have these as well as Chocolate Truffle on a plastic display (sort of like a reusable, open blister pack -- if that makes sense!) with a magnet on the back, and they're stuck onto the self checkout poles.

  15. Yeah. This sucks. Everyone who found out about these are now selling them on Ebay and Amazon. Why people? Why do you have to do this with everything? I really wanted just one of these.

  16. I found mine (both flavors) at Shop Rite grocery stores in CT for $.99 (on sale this week), but have not seen it at ANY of my Walgreens or CVSes.

  17. Update: I went to my WalMart today and found the following: Red Velvet, Cake Batter, Orange Cream, Apple Cider, Candy Cane and Chocolate - they had oodles of them, but they were in different parts of the store. Some were back by the pharmacy, some on sort of a side end cap near the shampoo, and the RV and CB flavors were, of all places, on one of the the center islands where the baking supplies are!! I bought several of each so I don't run out ;).

  24. I just found both of them at my Southern California CVS hanging on a strip at the end of a random aisle. They are both pretty yummy but I think the Cake Batter is my favorite.

  25. I *just* found this after searching pretty extensively in my area (San Jose). I've been everywhere ISO the WnW LE eyeshadow palettes, and have been checking for these, too. So far the only place I've found them is the Milpitas Ave. Walgreens off Dixon Landing Road. HTH!

  26. Found these (and other flavors) by the registers at Walmart for 98¢!

  27. I bought one cake batter, lost it in my room so bought a new one (it's so good!), realized I needed a backup, so got that one, then found a HUGE display when I was traveling out of state and bought 5! Then yesterday I found the original one I lost. So, 8 ChapSticks later, can you tell I'm in love? I really hope they're just kidding about these being LE (a girl can dream, right?).

  28. I have the cake batter and it's amazing. It helps my lips and smells yummy so I'll actually keep it applied. I got a pack of 3 at Target.

  29. I am a huge fan of the velvet cupcake. Usually I buy 25 tubes at a time because I'm so afraid of them being continued. Our Wal-Mart has all the new flavs but no more velvet cupcake :( 2 spare tubes in my purse with be guarded with my life. Guess it's time to start google search & buy up every tube I can find :( Sad customer I am
