Spotted: Essie Starry Starry Night...at Big Lots

This just in!

Reader April just left a comment on the You Tell Me page that will probably cause many of you to grab the car keys ASAP.

April writes:
RUN TO BIG LOTS!
Essie polishes are 3.20! Opi as well! BUT THERE IS MORE! I found 4 bottles of Essie starry starry night! All for under 15 dollars!!! Good luck! I had to dig for them!!!

I know that many of you have reported seeing Essie and OPI polishes at Big Lots over the past few months (in addition to Sula Paint & Peels), but never have I heard of a Starry Starry Night sighting!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this Essie shade, Starry Starry Night was released in 2008, I believe, and it's been a much-coveted and hard-to-find-shade ever since. If you see it at your Big Lots, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it...especially at just $3.20.

Thanks so much, April, for the great heads-up!

  2. If I weren't at work, I'd definitely head out the door this instant!

Gah, I hope there's some at my local Big Lots.

    1. No, she left a comment on the You Tell Me page. April is a frequent commenter and I didn't doubt this info because several readers over the past several months have found other Essies and OPIs at Big Lots. HOWEVER, it seems to be a regional thing, as not all Big Lots carry Essie, OPI, and other higher-end products.

I believe that certain Big Lots receive close-outs from local stores (beauty supplies, etc.) and the Big Lots locations in those cities will carry certain products. People have sent me pics of products (with Big Lots price tags, receipts, etc.) that I have NEVER seen at my local Big Lots, so that's another reason as to why I had no reason to doubt April's sighting info.

    1. Hi Kalee--please see my comment above as to why I think this info is credible. This is just my best guess, of course, but based on the volume of info I've received over the past several months (from separate, longtime readers) regarding Essie and OPI sightings at Big Lots, it does seem plausible.

    1. That was my post on MUA you're thinking of. I put the wrong pic in a Big Lots haul post.

    2. I'm *guessing* this was sarcastic. I heard about someone saying there was a Gosh sighting at Big Lots but I never posted that info on my blog, because the reader who let me know about it presented it to me as a "be careful--this is a troll" type of alert. :)

      Delete
    3. Hi Sophie: Thanks for clearing that up. I received an email from a reader saying that a Gosh sighting at Big Lots rumor was going around, that they were basically telling me it was false and to watch out. That's all I knew about it, so thanks for clearing that up!

  13. I was in Big Lots today- all we have are some old Revlons, and a couple of Elf sets! Not a single Essie....unless they are not in the cosmetic section?
Is it just in certain areas, or does Big Lots stock different items in different stores?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sometimes with higher-end products, is IS just certain areas. There have been plenty of credible sightings I've received from readers for things that I personally never found at my local Big Lots locations. It really depends on where you are, but I like to put this type of info out there so that we all can at least look for something that's been spotted. :)

  15. I just really think you're being trolled. There is no way in heck Essie SSN is at big lots. Until I see pictures/receipt/proof, I'm gonna call BS on this one...

    1. I definitely understand where you're coming from there, V. I guess that since I have seen pics/sightings from readers of things at Big Lots that I could never DREAM would show up at Big Lots, this info is not terribly shocking to me.

I remember when Revlon Perplex came out and I was hearing from readers all over that they couldn't find it, and every display was wiped out at their drugstores. Then, about a year later, full displays of Perplex were showing up at Big Lots for $1 each.

I know that Essie Starry Starry Night is in higher demand than Perplex was, but I'm just trying to say that strange, strange things sometimes end up at Big Lots due to retailers closing up shop, etc. It's hard to believe, but I sincerely had no cause to discredit this sighting since other Essies have shown up at Big Lots all over the nation.

Hope that helps you to see my side of it! :)

      Delete
    2. Oh absolutely, G! I thank you for bringing us the news, but until April perhaps shares a quick pic of her little haul, I remain...skeptical. :D Naturally, that doesn't stop me from stopping at 3 Big Lots in hopes of finding one... haha!

  16. I can believe this information! I found a pretty Essie shade at my local TJ Maxx and when I looked it up, I found out it was from the Fall 2008 collection. Not sure how or why it showed up there just now, but the makeup fates are mysterious beings... I will definitely be hunting around for this!

    1. Yep, i've seen those too! And let's not forget about the Sally Hansen Nail Prisms at Dollar Tree! I almost fell over when I first saw those at my local DT...I literally couldn't believe my eyes since they were so old and had been gone from drugstores for what? Ten years maybe? So strange!

      Delete
    2. That's why I'm not doubting it, stranger things have happened. It also could be as you said, a regional/local closeout. Which means the rest of us may be SOL, while April is still telling the truth. Oh, and I keep hoping another cache of SH Nail Prisms shows up at DT!

  17. Please let us know which location (City, State) these SSNs were found? Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  18. ^ That's my question, too. But I just may be heading to the Big Lots very soon out of extreme curiosity. If I found a SSN, even one, at any place around here (I'm in South Jersey), I think you'd have to call the paramedics.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Darn, our Big Lots closed last year. :-( I agree that there's just no way to know what older products you can find at Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Ross, etc. Yesterday I went to Ross and in with a bunch of mystery polish and unexciting Wet n Wild stuff was a beautiful set of four bright foils from Color Club for $5.99. I pounced!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Boy I hope this is true! Remember not long ago Big lots had lots of Maybelline Colorama's.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I stopped at a Big Lots today hoping to find the Too Faced makeup that was mentioned some time back. I didn't see any Essie though. :(

    ReplyDelete
  22. I went to the Big Lots in town (vacaville, ca), but there was nothing good. There never is. There was a four polish set from ELF, with a pinky nude, a mushroomy taupe, and a very pretty dark purple shimmer and dark blue shimmer. There were several different brightly colored crackle polish sets that I didn't pay much attention to.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah I went to mine and didn't find anything. Got all excited for nothing. :(

    ReplyDelete
  24. I haven't seen any at mine - but I've certainly found other goodies there. I wish there was more uniformity with stores like Big Lots, but it is what it is. I've been seeing lots of Essie and Nicole O.P.I. at Marshalls and TJ Maxx lately. Some really hard to find shades too ( for me) - like "Canadian Star" - I never saw that in any stores here.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh also - I recently found full sets of Color Club polishes at Burlinton for 7.99. I got the new "Take Wing" set - and the set with a bunch of foils. 7 full size bottles in each package !

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well this is causing quite the stir, isn't it? lol. I understand that SSN is incredibly HTF and released several years ago, but one of the fun things about shopping in these types of stores is you truly have no idea what you will find! I was recently in Big Lots and another discount store that is similar, but regional. At both locations there were huge amounts of Essie, and I even found a Sally Hansen Star Opal, but I didn't get it because the bottle and label were in unbelievably bad shape. However, the one store had mis-marked Essies, and they all were named "Clambake" lol. Those were the original Essie labels! I grabbed one that was correctly named, Aruba Blue, which I believe is from 2008 or 2009. It would be nice to see a picture and receipt, but I won't discount it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Amelania, you wouldn't happen to be in New England, would you? I found those "Clambake" Essies at Ocean State Job Lot and picked up a couple, even though I don't know what the actual name of the color is, they sure looked pretty anyway! lol

      Delete
    2. OMG, Donna, I was visiting my family in MA and ran across all those mislabeled Essie Clambakes at Ocean State Job lot too! hahahaah

      Delete
    3. Yes I am! lol. I couldn't believe it when every single one I picked up said "Clambake"! I didn't have much time to search the bin, so I grabbed my Aruba Blue and left. I think I'll go back (there are 3 in my immediate area) and see what I can dig up this weekend. I'm so glad others have seen them though! OSJL has actually become my favorite place to search for old LE polish, they always seem to have lots of Loreal, Maybelline, Revlon, and Sally.Hansen.

      Delete
    4. Ladies, with all the awesome OSJL sightings i've heard about over the years from you all, I swear that if I ever travel to New England, that will be the FIRST place I visit! Lol! ;)

    5. G, I wouldn't blame you! IMO, they are a bit cheaper and have a better selection than the big lots in my area. They always offer "Internet " coupons on their sale items, so last month I got a 2 pack of Physicians Formula Organic (Organix? ) eye liner pencils for $2! I'm totally new to this chain, and I can never believe the cosmetics (current and D/C'd ) they havefor such great prices.

Back to the topic of this thread, there is a BL that opened up not long ago, and I'll be checking for SSN this afternoon. I'll post my findings later on!

      Delete
    6. No SSN for me. It was the "inferior " BL that I went to tonight, not my usual location. I did get a couple ELF sets/palettes and a 4 pack of Revlons all for under $10 so I was pleased nonetheless. :)

I do wish there could be SOME uniformity within this chain. I do understand the concept of a close-out store, but it's still annoying lol

    7. I got one of those mislabeled "Clambake" Essies at Ocean State Job Lot, too! I think it was actually Rock Star Skinny, based on the other ones there from the same collection.

  27. I went to my Big lots and no dice.. did score the Elf eye primer 3 pack and various other goodies. Bonus, found a lunch bag for the girl.

Lets all tweet Essie and beg for a re release of this color =)

  32. I think it's sad that people are being THAT skeptical over this. I'm really excited, personally. But I also know that you really have to be prepared for failure with any of these hunts. I never found the special Sally Hansens and don't usually have much luck with Color Club. But it's fun to try!

    ReplyDelete
  33. No Big Lots around me - can someone pick up a SSN for me? Please? I thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh boy.. I'm surprised at Some ppls rude reaction to this post.. If big lots can have philosophy cosmetics and a bunch of other high quality brands- why is everyone so doubtful that this is true? Further, why would someone waste their time writing in and trying to share the news? What benefit do they get from it? And especially after G mentioned that April was a frequent Commented and trusted the info... Just be happy that this info is being brought to you.. What you do with it is up to you, but come on! Stop being so sore for someone else's find!
A few months ago I picked up several milani runway shades eyeshadow palettes at my local walgreens that were discounted to $1! These weird freak items/ sales happen so I wouldn't be so quick to call troll..

    1. There will always be skeptisim. Honestly, the fact that some people are and others arent is pretty realistic. It is easy to understand why some people would be skeptical that a polish released 4 years ago, is vhtf and super expensive could be found at Big Lots.

  35. Long time lurker, first time commenter. I'm in NE Indiana and just wanted to say that the Big Lots selection here is so much better than the ones I've been to in SoCal. The store I ran to in Culver City had NO Philosophy, whereas the one here still had everything. It may have something to do with the company being headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, or the fact that Columbus is a test market. That said, I thought it was impolite she was accused of trolling. Who has the time?

For those who haven't seen it yet, be patient, the Big Lots here only just got in the PF Healthy Wear foundation, and has quite a bit. These things seem to trickle in to stores. Just because one store has it right now doesn't mean they all will. Mine also had a big selection of Revlon and L'Oreal, as well as some higher end hair products right now. Oh, and Maybelline's define-a-brow in dark brown at the Dollar Tree.

  36. On the same note, I saw a few bottled of Essie's Absolutely Shore at the TJ MAxx in University Heights, OH a couple days ago. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. *sigh* never get this kind of stuff at my big lots. Was there yesterday, same OLD stuff they've had there for months.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I went to two different big lots in Elizabeth NJ and Plainfield NJ .... not a single Essie or OPI in site ... all they had was ELF, a no name polish brand and some revlons 8( maybe next time

    ReplyDelete
  39. There are too many people calling "troll" for me to answer individually...so here is my take on this.

Most cosmetic companies don't give a flip whether a particular color is "VHTF" or an "HG" or anything like that. They just know that they have cartons of backstock in their warehouses that they want to clear out. Even if someone in that company reads these blogs and has a clue that a discontinued color that they have crammed into a corner somewhere would cause a stir, what would they realistically be able to do with it? They don't have any channels available to clear out the old stock other than selling it to discount chains like Big Lots. So while I am shocked to hear that SSN was found at a Big Lots, I don't doubt that it happened.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. T-Rex is right. If old stock is found in a warehouse, the company doesn't care about its rarity; they just want to sell it. I play the collectible card game Magic the Gathering and have found the same thing -- sometimes old valuable packs of cards will surface because some retailer is cleaning house. It happens.

But on the subject of this Essie color Starry Starry Night, does anyone know of a dupe? thx

      Delete
  40. My Big Lots here in Southern California sucks. There's never anything good, except maybe Revlon nail polishes but even then, there's never much to choose from. I just went the other day and there was literally like two nail polishes. It's kind of disappointing, but I might go again just in case.

  41. I looked this morning on the way to work with no luck. My sweet boyfriend looked at a BL near where he lives (I had to send him a picture and describe it to him) and did not find it - he asked a store clerk who said that maybe they'll get something like that in...lol, not sure what he told her that he was looking for. I'm remaining hopeful though, I've been lucky with some of the BL finds in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I just spent an hour digging through many many MANY bins at the Big Lots in Westland, Michigan. I can confirm that there were TONS of Essie and OPI but alas, no Starry Starry Night. I did however find Marshmellow and Watermelon for about 2.40 each. YAY !

    ReplyDelete
  43. sadly, i've never seen any essies or OPIs at my BL, just those elf sets (that we also got at TJMaxx--the EXACT ones haha} and a bunch of pink sally hansen nail strips haha. I'll have to keep my eye out because SSN is one of my all time lemmings.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I lost out too-went to Big Lot's yesterday late and no Essie or OPI anything. I was so disappointed, but I've never really seen any makeup of value at mine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I went to the Big Lots in West Bridgewater and Raynham, MA but all I found were a few bottles of some brand I've never heard of (Paint & Peel???) Neither one had a very large selection of cosmetics and an even smaller subsection of nail products. But at least my husband & I found an interesting restaurant nearby, so the evening wasn't a total loss!

  46. We got a Big Lots in the town about a half hour to the west on the interstate fairly recently and I still haven't been to it. I guess now I have a reason to go!
