The Wednesday Question

Loose or pressed face powder?

As much as I try to love loose face powders, I always go back to pressed. I love the portability of pressed powders, and I really love the lack of mess on my vanity. I know that loose powders can provide such a lovely, airbrushed quality to the skin, but I use a big, fluffy face brush with my pressed powders and that seems to do the trick just fine for me. How about you?

  1. I'm with you - I tend to go back and forth between Bare Escentuals and Laura Geller, but lately I've been grabbing my LG Balance 'n Brighten more than anything else. It's easy, conveinent, portable, and I really love how it looks on.

  2. I use loose powders, usually bare minerals. I could do without the mess, but I have yet to find a pressed powder that I like as much. I really can't wait to try Bare Minerals pressed mineral veil! I just have too much loose mineral veil right now to justify the purchase. Hopefully soon!

  3. My skin is really dry and I have better control w/pressed powder; a little goes a long way for me.

  4. Though I use a loose powder because it has a mattifying formula that works best for me I find that I prefer pressed powders. So much cleaner and I find they have better coverage too. *sigh* now if I could only find a good one!

  6. Here, Here! I love the airbush (as you mentioned) finish that the loose powder provides however, it's just easy to travel and use a pressed. I too use my Large Powder brush when applying using a light hand! Great question! Happy Hump Day! ;-) -Leslie

  7. In general, I don't use powders too often. I don't wear a lot of foundation or much face makeup at all, but if I'm using a powder, I like pressed the best. Mostly because I like to have something in my purse for on the go.

  8. Pressed pressed pressed! I can't deal with loose anything (face powder or eyeshadow), it's too much work for me.

  9. Pressed! So much easier to carry with you and gives you the flexibility of applying with a brush or a puff/sponge. Often I'll use a brush at home and a puff or sponge when I'm out. Also I'm lazy and it's easier (IMHO) to buy a new puff or sponge than wash my brush! They are cheap and easily replaceable. I have acne and oily skin so keeping my makeup application tools clean is a priority. Also I find loose powder settles into every line, wrinkle and crease.

  10. I use NYC loose powder to set my makeup. It is really fine, and sets really well without looking cakey or dusty. Instead of pulling off the sticker on the package, punch out just a few of the holes, this really helps get just the right amount of product without the mess. If you have already removed the sticker, wipe out the package really well and apply some tape to recover holes. I tip the container upside down, turn it back over, and tap on the lid to settle the product. Dip my brush in, tap it in the lid to distribute evenly, then tap it on my face focusing on the areas that need it (like T zone), then lightly buff all over with the empty brush to get the rest. This applies just the right amount. It takes very little. I do use pressed powder if I'm traveling, need a quick touch up, or going for a powder only look (I prefer either Maybelline dream matte, or Rimmel stay matte for that, both are much thicker and have more coverage than the NYC, and also more color). The NYC compact powder is ok for touch ups, but seems to be a lot more concentrated and you have to be careful with it, easy to get too much. I use a replacement puff (the one that comes with it is awful) and just touch it to the product, press on, and lightly buff. A little off topic, but I have found that proper priming, and good foundation selection are much more important if you are trying to control shine than constant reapplication of powder. All it does is cake layer after layer of product on, with the oil creating a nasty "paste", and can look really icky by the end of the day. I have really oily/combination skin, and live in a hot and humid area.... within a couple of hours I can wipe a sheet of oil off my forehead normally. With MOM, and BR primer (as well as wise choices in moisturizer and sunblock- they have really amazing products now) that no longer happens. I wear it even if I'm not wearing makeup, looks natural like you have nothing on and completely prevents oil slick face.

  11. This is tough, but honestly, I prefer the loose powder. The only reason I love pressed powder is for the portability. However, as far as performance and air brush, I get the best quality from loose powder. I am a huge fan now of Ben Nye's visage powder.

  12. I love my bare essentuals! I find loose powders to provide me with better coverage/application but use pressed on the go. Pressed seems to look more caked on sometimes

  14. Without hesitation, pressed powder. As much as I do love Bare Escentuals Matte Foundation, it's simply too much of a high maintenance product (tap into the lid, swirl brush, tap the brush, repeat). Not to mention, I feel like I waste so much product in the mess of it all. I've recently made the switch to MAC MSF Natural, and although I prefer the look of Bare Escentual's loose powder, the user-friendliness of the MSF is what will cause me to repurchase.

  15. Neither. I'm combination (just starting to get a little less oily) and it's hot/humid here.

Shortly after applying powder I'm so oily, so I have to powder multiple times. It's just awful looking even before the end of the day. I now use one of the silicone based finishers (Mally's Poreless Perfection) and it's changed my life.

I press in a small amount and my pores and fine lines almost vanish; it gives me a matte finish and my makeup lasts for hours - 12 hours later and it looks as fresh as when I first applied it and I'm not even oily. I usually don't even have to touch up, so none of that cakey mess from too many powder applications. It takes very little product (less is best), so one compact will last forever. Before discovering this I preferred pressed powder with the puff.

If you order directly from her site she has a 2 piece primer/finisher set that comes with free shipping and a free lip product for $39.95. That same Poreless Defender on QVC is $36.48 + $4.97 shipping = $41.45. The only difference between the two is that the one on QVC is in a compact that stores the sponge; the one ordered directly from Mally has no place to store the sponge. So, not only do you pay less, but you also get a primer and a lip product (all items are full size). If you're sensitive to silicone, then you won't like it. If I wear it to long before washing my face, I'll have little white heads the next day, but it's a small price to pay for flawless makeup all day long.

  16. has anyone ever tried pur minerals pressed powder? it is the best and makes my skin look so much more even and stays put all day. it's my favorite product.

  17. I use a loose mineral makeup. I think that the last time that I used pressed powder was more than a decade ago. I feel like I have better control over the application with loose.

  18. I would prefer loose powder, but I am picky about it. The one I like is Makeup Forever's HD powder, but I don't like to pay for it. I've been using Physician's Formula pressed powder, which is my favorite drugstore pressed powder. It gives a natural effect and it's much more affordable than Makeup Forever.

  19. Pressed - so much cleaner in my makeup bag. I find that I use less as well. I like Laura Geller's Balance and Brighten if I want more coverage, and I'm liking the new Physicians Formula if I just want to set my makeup.

  20. I go back and forth... But I have to say, the only pressed powders I've been truly happy with have been very expensive, and it seems like I can find loose powders inexpensively that work for me, so I tend to go for that to set makeup! However, I use pressed powder exclusively for touch-ups; I am really liking The Body Shop's Face Base for that right now, although L'Oreal Infallible pressed powder is what lives in my purse, and it gets the job done without looking awfully cakey. I think my favorite setting powder was Fresh's pressed powder, though. It absorbs oil but is luminescent enough to look natural and air-brushed, but with absolutely no glitter, and applies like a dream with a sponge or with a fluffy brush.

  21. I love pressed powder too..its just much easier and doesn't get all over the place like you said.

  22. Loose. I used pressed for years before finally deciding to try a loose powder (NYC translucent, actually, nice and cheap!) and it turns out I MUCH prefer loose over pressed. Who knew? It's interesting how different products work for different people!

  23. I've honestly never used loose powder, but I'm addicted to my Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Face powder. It gives me just enough coverage and is about as lightweight as you can get :)

  24. I prefer pressed powder. I usually don't have time for loose and it's too messy

  25. I use loose powder to set my makeup and use pressed powder for touch-ups. I use a brush for applying pressed powder so it doesn't look cakey.

  26. I set with loose when I put my makeup on in the morning. I carry pressed powder & blot papers to address any shine during the day.

  27. I've never tried a loose powder. They seem too difficult for someone as clumsy as me. I've only ever tried Maybelline Fit Me & Rock & Republic - Cashmere.
