Review: New Wet n Wild Megalast Nail Color (PART TWO)

If you missed PART ONE of this series and would like to see my thoughts on the consistency, dry-time, brush, etc. of these polishes, please click here.

Today I'm going to focus on one polish in the newly-reformulated collection from Wet n Wild. I didn't plan it that way (I was actually going to cover four shades, like I did in Part One), but thanks to a comment from reader Impoverished by Polish, I felt the need to focus on just this one particular shade (more on that in a second):

Wet n Wild Megalast Nail Polish in I Need A Refresh-Mint
(retail: $1.99, 0.45 oz)

At first glance, this polish looks like one in a sea of many, many pastel mint green cremes that have flooded the drugstores over the past few years. But upon closer inspection, you'll see that it's NOT really a mint-green, but more of a blue-tinged mint green.

Two coats of I Need a Refresh-Mint, no top coat

Do you notice anything strange about the above picture? Well what if I told you that on TWO of my fingers, I'm wearing a totally different nail color by another brand?

OK, enough playing around. Here's the big reveal:

Yep, I'm wearing China Glaze For Audrey on my index and ring fingers!

I know that in the above bottle shots, it looks like For Audrey is the greener of the two, but on the NAIL, For Audrey actually has a hint more blue to it. Look again and maybe you can see it:

It was incredibly difficult for me to capture the slight differences between the two polishes in photographs, but in real life you can see the blue in For Audrey a teeny bit more, while I Need A Refresh-Mint reads a TINY bit more green on the nail. But honestly? Who is ever going to look that closely other than nail freaks? (And I include myself in that category, of course.)

BOTTOM LINE: If you already own China Glaze For Audrey, you do not need Wet n Wild I Need A Refresh-Mint. But if you don't already own For Audrey (one of my personal faves from China Glaze), then Wet n Wild I Need A Refresh-Mint would be a nice, low-cost alternative.

PS: I Need A Refresh-Mint has a good consistency (a tiny bit on the thick side but nothing intolerable). The first coat goes on streaky but the second coat yields fantastic opacity. However, it's not without its faults. The brush that came with my bottle is rough, meaning the bristles aren't as soft as they could be. This led to visible brush marks on my nails after this polish dried, but you have to look closely to see them (a clear top coat makes them practically invisible).

A HUGE thanks to Impoverished by Polish for the heads-up on this drugstore dupe!

Do you own I Need A Refresh-Mint and/or For Audrey? How do YOU think they compare? Please check back soon for the next post in my ongoing series covering all of the shades in the new Wet n Wild Megalast collection.

  1. What a cheap alternative for For Audrey! Now I'm regretting not picking this up when I saw it at Walmart yesterday... I shall go back lol.

    Thanks for the comparison!

  2. How ironic...Im actually wearing the WnW polish on my nails as I type this. :)

  3. I Need a Refresh Mint is awesome! It's also very very similar to Essie Turquoise and Caicos, and L'Oreal Club Prive.

  4. I think I may have an addiction to mint green polishes - I have For Audrey and picked up the WnW thinking it was a totally different shade. Haha, I guess I can't help it, I'm drawn to the color. Thank you for the comparison shot!

  5. does it have a better formula than for audrey? lol

    1. To me, yes. For Audrey can require three coats for me, or even four sometimes. The wnw shade is perfect in two. Hope that helps!

    2. I agree the WnW formula was much better than my For Audrey. I actually just did this comparison last week when I was on a Sinful Colors spree (they were on sale for $.99) & decided to throw in ”I need a refresh mint” ... The brush is just so big & ragged, my only complaint with the new WnW polishes (the Spoiled brushes were just as bad)

  6. Once I heard that I Need a Refresh Mint was blue-tinged, Essie Mint Candy Apple came to mind. Do you (or anyone else here) know if they are similar? Thanks!

    1. I don't own the Essie shade, but I've heard that it's a good dupe of For Audrey,. So if that's the case, than yes, it would be very close to I Need A Refresh-Mint.

    2. Mint Candy Apple has a similar color to the WnW but it's a bit lighter and a bit greener. Also, the formula is just terrible. Takes forever to dry, and it's very, very streaky!

  7. I picked up the I Need A Refresh-Mint because it looked like a beautiful base color to some cherry blossom nail art I am planning to do this spring. I was so surprised by this, I bought 6 more in the collection. I understand what you say about the brush, but I work around it. Even though China Glaze it's that expensive through Sally's, I am glad that it is an exact dup of For Audrey.

Thanks for the post! Can't wait to see more! Wonder if there are any more WnW dup of other polishes. : ) Can get costly when purchasing multiple bottles!!

    1. Yep, there are. I did a post a while back about how Sugar.Coat is a very close dupe for OPI Bubble Bath. Hope that helps!

  8. I almost picked this up! But I picked up the blue-purple On a Trip polish instead, which is ultra pretty, btw. I layered 1 coat of Break the Ice over it, and it was really pretty.

  9. This is nice to know! I was thinking about picking up For Audrey, but I already have Refresh-Mint so I guess I don't really need to.

  10. I am a WNW fanatic myself. Anything new that comes out, I but it all. I may never wear them, ut end giving them away...as I have some these colors. Really not impressed, 1.99 is perfect for how long it stays on. JMO.

    1. Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. It's funny because of all the wnw polish formulas I've reviewed on the blog, the new megalasts have received the most raves from readers when it comes to staying power. I have had so many people tell me (even in the comments in this post) that they're able to get 4, 5, 6 days of wear without chips. So again, I'm really sorry this hasn't been the case for you. Maybe you can try a diff base or top coat and see if that works better?

  11. I have For Audrey, good thing I saw this post before I decided to pick up I need a Refresh-mint.

  12. I have this and I have for Audrey but I like this better. For Audrey just doesn't do it with my skin tone. There is a slight difference which makes me lean towards this. I love it really love it.

  13. I have CgG For Audrey, WnW Refresh-Mint and Essie Turquoise and Caicos. I had my husband do a swipe of each on my plastic swatch wheel. I really had a hard time telling which was which, except I knew their brush strokes and formulas. I love wearing any of these 3 when I work at they cupcake bakery, it matches our logo!

  14. WOW. That's insane! I'm excited to hear this, since I've been tempted by For Audrey for quite a while now!

  15. I'm wearing Refresh-Mint now and I love it. I'm really picky when it comes to blue/green polishes, but this one is a real winner!

  16. I have the WnW version and love it because the color reminds me exactly of a Tiffany's box! :) I really like the new brush shape on these. But, agreed that the brush is a bit stiff. :)

    1. No surprise at all that this shade reminds you of a Tiffany box, hun. For Audrey was named for Audrey Hepburn, who of course starred in the classic film Breakfast at Tiffany's. ;)

  17. I am so glad I have both! I also bought On a Trip too! I am suprised that I am getting 4 days of wear from a WNW polish. With the older polishes I wouldnt even make it a day!

  18. With the brush being so hit or miss with this brand, I'd rather spend the money on For Audrey.

    1. I have a few of these new Megalast polishes, and I have yet to find one with a wonky brush.

  19. I just saw this color today and said to my self "Tiffany Blue" didnt buy it but bought the purple--Through The Grapevine.
The shape bottle reminds me of the Sally Hansen complete manicure

  20. Not sure where to post this, but is there a dupe for WnW's "Break The Ice"? I can't find it at any Walgreens where I live and I totally love that color. Help? Thanks!

    1. When Walgreens resets the WnW wall display in order to make room for all the new 2012 products, you'll be able to easily find Break The Ice there. Just give it some time. :)

    2. FINALLY found Break the Ice. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

  21. I would have never thought of these two as dupes for some reason. I have For Audrey and just picked up I Need a Refresh-mint today. I love the color so much though that I don't mind owning both.

  22. I was so excited to see this post. I bough I Need a Refreshment thinking it looked like For Audrey and I loved the color so much I didn't even bother to check swatches. So good to know that I don't need the other. I am enjoying the wear on these polishes and of the phone I own, none of the brushes are "raggety"

  23. Sinful colors Mint Apple is also a dupe of these.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hum...I'm going to have to politely disagree with you on that one. I own Sinful Colors Mint Apple and to me, it's true jade green (not a blue-green) and it also has gold shimmer running through it (the polishes in this post have no shimmer in them).

  24. This is your fault. You people do this to me. For some reason this post just made me want to run out and get both. Yes, both, I'm a freak. I've actually had both of these in my hands many times and always leave them. GAH!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm so glad I could help, G. I'm always drawn to mint greens so it's no surprise I had to buy this one. Guess the WnW is a good backup of the China Glaze.

  26. Thanks for the info! I have wanted For Audrey for a while and now I can just get the drugstore dupe! Love it! I also have wanted to try the new megalast formula for WnW so this is perfect :)

  27. I have For Audrey but it bubbles horribly on me for some reason. I am glad to report that I don't have that problem with the Wet N Wild! I don't know if my CG is just a bad bottle or what, but the formula on the WnW seems vastly better. I am glad, because I really loved the color of For Audrey and hated having to fight it all the time to wear it!

  28. I got this WnW I Need a Refresh-Mint today,
haven't tried it on but already love it ♥ ♥ ♥

  29. I recently bought I Need a Refresh-Mint and I LOVE LOVE it, it's my new go to color!

  30. I bought the WnW color last week in a polish binge and I was surprised to find that the formula is much better than For Audrey (and I'm a For Audrey fanatic!). It was completely opaque in 2 coats where Audrey takes at least 3. I will agree on the brush being streaky on the first coat but, for me, the second coat covered it up. I also added a bubble gum pink accent stripe on my ring fingers. Super cute.

  31. Alright, I don't know about about anybody else, but I had absolutely terrible, horrific, outstandingly bad staining with this polish :( The color is lovely, yes, but I don't know if I'll EVER use this again because of the staining. I'm including a picture of my nails after removing this polish. Please ignore the yellowness, that's stained from a couple weeks back that I simply couldn't buff out. Normally I use two coats of base coat to make sure my nails don't get stained, but no matter what I couldn't get this blue out! D:

  32. Ooooooh, thanks for this post! I've been wanting to get either China Glaze or Finger Paints in this "Tiffany" color but am trying hard to stay on a strict budget for a couple of months. This WnW color plus the CVS sale this week is a win-win for me.

  33. There must be two different formulas for the I Need a Refresh-Mint. I have seen the color in the stores actually be stocked in the place of Retro Mint because it looked so green. My I Need a Refresh-Mint is super blue. I just got For Audrey today and swatched them and they are nothing alike. For Audrey is actually lighter and seems to have a more green tint. I love them both but like I said there has to be something different with my bottles because they are world's apart.
