Review: As Seen On TV Salon Express Nail Art Stamping Kit (pic heavy)

NOTE: Before purchasing this kit at my local Rite Aid, I was a nail stamping virgin. I don't own the Konad or any faux-nads, etc. and I've always been intimidated by the entire process. So this review is from the perspective of a complete newbie. If you already have experience with nail stamping, your opinion of this kit could be quite different from mine.

I have never posted a review of a product after owning it for less than 24 hours, but I'm breaking my own rules here today! After Caitlin shared the news that there is now a DRUGSTORE nail stamping kit available at Rite Aid for $9.99 (according to some of you this kit is also available at Sally Beauty and CVS but perhaps with different plates), I pretty much jumped in my car and raced to my Rite Aid last night to get it. In retrospect, I'm glad I rushed to get it because it was the last one left in the As Seen On TV aisle!

The retail price of this kit is like almost all other As Seen On TV products: $9.99. But because I'm a Rite Aid Wellness+ Gold Member, I got it for $8 (yay!).

As Seen On TV Salon Express Nail Art Stamping Kit
(retail: $9.99)

There are six steps to this process (actually, there are more steps that they don't list but I'll get to that later):

Note the plate designs on the packaging (these are NOT the plates that I received, but more on that in a bit):

Tucked away in the bottom of the kit on a little piece of paper (that I did NOT see until after I spent hours using this kit), are some VERY valuable tips:

The contents of the kit:

Clockwise from the top: dual-ended stamper, scraper, plate holder
(apologies for the messy condition of these items; I took these pictures after I had used the kit)

the small end of the stamper

the large end of the stamper

 the plates

You get five plates in this kit, and they come with a peel-able protective blue coating. After using the plates, I instinctively replaced the blue film because I figured it would keep the plates from getting scratched. I'm not sure if you're supposed to do this, but that's what I did.

NOTE: these plates are made of metal (silver in color) but I photographed them at an angle that makes them look black. I did this because it was easier to see the designs at this angle.

NOTE #2: You'll soon see that the plates I received are NOT the same designs as indicated on the packaging of the kit. I actually prefer the designs I received, with the exception of the seahorse. I really wish I would have gotten the seahorse in this kit!

NOTE #3: I have heard from a few of you that the plates in this kit vary, and if you buy this kit at CVS or Sally Beauty, your plates may be different than what I received.

NOTE #4: Apparently some of these plates are also available from other manufacturers. For instance, the plate with the graduated dots (plate SE12 in my kit) is identical to the plate that Erika used in this post.

And here's how the plate fits into the holder. This is where the magic happens!

Like I mentioned at the top of this post, I never post a review after having owned a product for less than 24 hours, but I honestly feel like I'm a old pro at using this kit after having spent the entire night obsessing over perfecting my technique (it's far from perfect now, but I'm getting SO much better!).  I started playing around with this kit while Mr. G and I sat down to watch Boardwalk Empire, followed The Walking Dead, followed by The Amazing Race, followed by the movie Meatballs. So my estimation is that I spent about five continuous hours using this kit, and I really feel confident writing this review and sharing my insights with you. After all, it's not rocket science, right?

Funny story: when I sat down at the couch and started to open this kit, here's the dialogue I had with Mr. G:

Mr. G: What's that?

Me: Oh, it's a nail thing. I could explain but it would totally bore you.

Mr. G: But that doesn't look like your normal "nail stuff". What IS it?

Me: It's a Konad-type of thingy. Nevermind. Watch the show.

Mr. G: A GONAD? What the hell???

Me: (uncontrollable laughter) No, not a GONAD, a KONAD! Seriously? If I explained, it would take too long and your eyes would glaze over. It's a thing to make pretty designs on my nails.

Mr. G: Oh. You're right. I don't wanna know.

So let's jump ahead and show you the end result of my gonad konad fauxnad nail stamping kit experiment:

After MUCH trial and error, I settled on a combination of LA Girls Metal polish in Antique Gold (base color) and Wet n Wild Craze polish in Gray's Anatomy (this is the original Gray's Anatomy, which was a limited edition release from a few years ago), which I used on stamping plate SE11 to create the leopard spot design.

Not too bad, right? Obviously on some of my nails I applied the stamp too close (or to far away) from my cuticle, but overall I think the design itself is crisp and clear with no smudging or blurring. I'm also very happy with the color combo I ultimately settled on! (If you'd like to see an awesome mani using this design--different plate manufacturer but same design--click here.)

I'm not going to walk you through the entire process since the instructions on the packaging are clear and concise. However, I am going to share with you some valuable info that I discovered during this process. If  you're a nail stamping newbie and you decide to try this kit, I hope this will make your experience A LOT easier.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR NEWBIES:
  • Before you start, check out Erika's post that contains her "set-up" for nail stamping. I'm so glad I remembered this post before I started, because there's one KEY item that you need to have on hand: a cotton pad/ball soaked in acetone (or many, if you're messy like me). This is essential because you'll need to clean off your scraper, stamper and plate in between each use.  So just make sure you have acetone (I use Rite Aid Renewal Extra Strength remover which is my Holy Grail remover--it's 100% acetone) and lots and lots of cotton pads on hand.
  • Protect whatever surface you're working on before you start. I was doing this at my coffee table, so I took some Trader Joe's paper grocery bags (they're nice and thick) and covered the surface first. There's a lot of potential for spilled acetone, polish drippings, etc. so cover your work surface well!
  • YOU'RE ONLY AS GOOD AS THE NAIL POLISH YOU'RE USING. I learned this the hard way, my lovelies. I wish I would have seen that little tip about using a "thicker polish" in the directions before I embarked on this journey. I won't bore you with the list of different polishes I tried before I settled on that metallic silver Wet n Wild polish. What I didn't realize was that none of the polishes I was using at first (unsuccessfully) were THICK enough to adhere to the rubber stamper. So I'd apply the polish to the plate, scrape as directed, and when I'd press the stamper to the plate, there was LITERALLY NO POLISH ON THE STAMP. I think I must have done this 100 times with dozens of different polishes until I realized that thicker metallic and shimmery polishes work best. I know that there are polishes (cremes, etc.) that are designed specifically for nail stamping, but I obviously don't own any. So if you don't own nail-stamping-polishes, I HIGHLY suggest using polishes with a thicker consistency that are shimmery or metallic in nature. I really feel that these yield the best results with this particular kit. (The directions say that you can lightly file the rubber stamper to make the polish adhere better, but I'm scared to try this. If you have filed your stamper, please leave a comment and let me know if it worked? Thank you!)
  • The first time you try this, it's not going to work. I promise you that. But don't give up, because once you get the technique down, it's EASY. Just remember to use a rolling motion with the stamper. Aligning the design on the nail is the hardest part for me (I botched it with crooked designs so many times it wasn't even funny), but it DOES get easier. Just take your time, use a fluid rolling motion from one side of your nail bed to the other, and with a little practice you'll have fabulous looking nails in a few hours (or less if you're more skilled than I am at this).
FINAL VERDICT: Totally worth the $9.99. It takes some time to get the technique down,  but if you follow the tips above, YOU CAN DO THIS. I"m so thrilled that there's a drugstore kit for nail stamping that actually works! How awesome is that?

Thanks so much for reading this, and I hope that this helps other nail-stamping-virgins out there! It's far less intimidating than I thought it would be but you have to be willing to put in some time to get the technique down. I built nail stamping up in my mind as this scary, highly technical process which is why, in addition to the price, I stayed away from it for years. But now that there's an accessible, affordable kit at the drugstore, we can all give it a shot!

  2. I THINK I SO NEED THIS! I have a Konad starter kit (bought so i could get the stamper and scraper lol) and a monster bundle thing i got off amazon, BUT I NEED THIS. why? mainly for the disk holder thing, hahaha, and because i think those disks have some designs none of mine have, hmmm...might go check cvs and sallys too to what the different disks look like to compare!

  3. I am like I can't get my nail polish correct on my nails and that s what kept me from buying these stamping thingies. But I pat my back that i read your post and I did learn a few tips. Checking out Erika's post too... Please do let me know if this set is available online too. I' love to buy it.Thanks.

  4. WHAT. I MUST have this!!! wow. omg. They made a budget version of the Konad. I'm so happy! lol :D

I almost got the expensive Konad! eeee. thanks for the review!

  5. I bought a stamper/scraper combo off Amazon when I got the Bundle Monster plates, and I lightly filed my stamper. It definitely worked better for me after the very light filing.

  6. I file mine and the image would adhere better. The sally chrome pens are good for konading, I have all the bundle monsters.. The fauxnad keep selling out on me. But I will have those pretties. I got mine today. Just because. didnt see any at CVS though or walmart. They all have As seen on tv.. sections!!

  7. looks like the stamp designs are nearly identical to Konad or bundlemonster plates (I own both) so it's affordable for someone who's just starting with nail stamping.

some China Glaze polishes work well for stamping (chrome collection especially), and nearly all of the American Apparel polishes work if you want a creme stamp. Color Club and Finger paints also have polishes that work for stamping :)

  8. I also had problems with my stamper until I filed it using a glass file - and I gently file it about every other time I do a stamped mani.

  9. Great review! I saw that at Rite Aid the other day and was wondering how it worked/if it worked well :)

  10. Just an FYI, I found these at my local Grocery Outlet for $8.99. Though I'm not sure if Grocery Outlet's are everywhere.

  11. I was wondering if this kit could be at CVS, since we don't have Rite Aid here. I'm going to look for it. Thanks for the review!

  12. Im so sad. Theres no Riteaid in Minnesota. G, maybe you could do a drugstore swap? For your readers if they would like to participate?

  13. My daughter just asked for this stamping kit for Christmas. Thank you for this Gonad, I mean Konad review! LOL!! ;)

  14. I went to 3 different Rite Aids today and couldn't find this! I was so disappointed, I didn't even check the two closest to my house. I was worn out from disappointment. But I will go check tomorrow. I want the plates you got with your kit, and the plate holder will be a nice bonus!

So glad to hear they work well because I was worried the plates wouldn't be as good as the Konad ones. Thanks for the review!

  15. I always lightly file my "stamper" before I start stamping. It helps hold onto the polish. I keep 2 cotton balls, nail polish remover, tape, and q-tips nearby for making it a cleaner experience. It gets easier every time you do it! They look great, keep having fun with it!

  16. do you know if the stamper works on the konad plates?

they really do have it at sally's! and it says in store too :D
my rite aid didn't have it, so i plan on going to sally's tomorrow! ^_^

  18. How do you clean the stamper, etc., between uses without messing up your nails?

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Sally Hansen Insta Dri polishes work really well for stamping, if you don't have actual stamping nail polishes, and they're inexpensive and come in most colours. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm new into the world of stamping myself, but I find it just as amusing as you do. :D
And! I find it great that there are coming more manufacturers on the market!

    ReplyDelete
  21. That Mr. G convo is classic lol :)

FYI a good drugstore polish for stamping is Sally Hansen's Insta Dri polishes. Also Wet N Wild Black Creme is supposed to work well too. I haven't tried it out yet though!

Oh and using an old plastic credit card or gift card to scrape works well too. The metal scraper sometimes scratches the plates so I stick to cards.

Thanks for the review. I didn't know about the different plates thing and I've already got the Konad versions of two of the plates you got.

  22. OMG I am so getting this if I can find it! :D Thank you so much for this amazing review and all the tips!

  25. :) this post made my day. Found It at CVS in store (was sold out online)I got the plates that are on the package (which kinda sucks so I'll still be looking I really wanted the cheetah plate). Happy I found it on the fisrt try. was 9.99and used my $10 extra care bucks so it was only .60 cents :) Happy Happy joy joy

  26. I found mine at CVS (after not finding it at the Sally and BigLots in the same complex), and mine has the plates pictured on the box. I'm okay with that except the "full nail" design ones, which would only cover my pinky. But I'd like to see a list of possible plates.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I went to 2 Sally's and a CVS last night trying to find this. The 3rd place was a charm, the Sally's closest to my house. The girl there said they had just gotten them earlier that day. I got the plates pictured on the package, but I like the ones you got better. I don't use the scraper it cam with because I read it scratchs up the plates so I use an old rewards card from a pet store. I think I'm going to buy some of the bundle monster plates....

  28. I saw your post yesterday and I ran to my Ride Aid store and I got the last one, I was so excited!! I did some research through youtube and I found a tutorial by "woolyrunt", she uses the Wetnwild black nail polish $0.99. I did my nails today just like she showed it in the video and it looks awesome, you might want to practice a few times before you do it.

  29. I found this at the first Rite Aid I went to a few days ago and tried it as soon as I got home, although my metallics and shimmers didn't show up so well, as I'd predicted after reading your review :( But I just did my first full stamping mani today using WnW Ebony Hates Chris in the fishnet pattern over WnW Shield and I think it looks pretty good for my first real try, heh (http://bit.ly/v3otJX). I'm going to try the filing trick next time and see if I can get my golds and silvers to show up over darker colors. (I lightly filed the stamper for the fishnet mani, but I think the black would've showed up pretty well regardless.)

Thanks so much for heads up on this kit and the review! Now my friends who don't live near Rite Aid's want me to get this kit for them, haha.

  30. I just scored one from Hancock Fabrics in their as seen on tv section. They accept competitors coupons so i used a 40% micheals coupon and got it for $6.43.

  31. I don't have any stamping plates, but I've had my eye on the Bundle Monster set.
I've heard that Wet and Wild Mega Shine Black Creme is amazing for stamping! The post you linked-she used that for the spots.
    It's 99 cents! lol
I have it- it's thick and opaque in one coat.

  32. hey texas girls! we don't have rite aid, but i did find this today at HEB! there's also a $2 off yellow coupon good until the january 2nd, so you should be able to get it for $7.99. my store has the as seen on tv section on an endcap near the home cleaning products!

  34. I got this today. It worked well for me, but my kit came with an extra insert saying for best results use nail art paint brands. I also applied a clear top coat real nice. no smudges because i filed my stamper so the middle area was not rounded just flat.

  35. I asked for a knock off konad kit for christmas/my birthday so If I don't get that then I will go out to sally's and get this! I want one sooooo bad!

  36. Thank you so much for posting this in-depth review and all of your tips. I just picked up this kit at Sally's Beauty Supply a few days ago, but I've been hesitating at using the kit because I've never done nail stamping before. So thanks! Hopefully it'll work out well for me. :)

  37. I have purchased a set at Rite Aid, and at CVS. The one I got at Rite Aid are the same plates you reviewed. The CVS set only has one image plate with full nail designs, and the rest are just the little images. They are actually the same as what's featured on the back of the package.
I don't know about the ones from Sally's though... I wonder if it's got different plates as well?

  38. I just wanted to let everyone know that I found the Salon Express Nail Stamping Kit at Ross last night for only $6.99! I went to two different Ross stores in the Chandler and Gilbert, Arizona areas for those of you that live in those areas. I know Ross can be hit or miss, but maybe you can find them at different Ross stores throughout the country. I hope this helps some people find it!

  40. I first saw this on their commercials and almost called & ordered it but changed my mine. That was about a month ago & I came across your post the other day & was so jealous that you guys were able to find this at your local drugstores bc I haven't seen them around here. Well I was at CVS yesterday and decided to look through the As seen on Tv Section and they had it!! I was so happy lol. Plus I got it for only $6 with my CVS cash coupons. Im hoping Im not that horrible at it. But these tips seem like they'll really help. Thank you!!!

    Kelly :)

  41. Do you think this would work on a 5 year olds nails? I'm trying everything possible to stop nail biting and I'm finding that keeping them pretty works best.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I just received this as a birthday present, and was grateful to your post as I was having problems with it till I read there was a blue plastic cover!! LOL. Its still difficult, but I can see getting the hang of it. I didn't see a single mention of a cover and it took forever to get a hold of it to pull it of, it may have been weeks before I noticed - so thanks! I still have a problem of not all of the polish getting scraped off, I think my scraper is a little uneven, have you had this problem?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Great post! I just wanted to let anyone who is trying to find this product that I found it at my local Price Chopper of all places (with all the other as seen on tv stuff). I am horrible at it so far, but I usually pick up nail things quickly and I think my essie nail polishes are a little to thin. I am going to pick up some metallic. I am super jealous of your plates, I wanted a cheetah one so bad!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I bought mine at Sally's for $9.99. I have tried this quite a few times and am finding that the plates are not deep enough to hold polish. I tried scraping off the nail polish with the scraper ( whiched scratched the plates and left grooves deeper than the designs). Switching to an old credit card (this did not scratch the plates), I found that there was no polish left in the design. I have tried all types of polish with the same result. Is there anyone who bought theirs from Sally's and is having this problem??

    ReplyDelete
  45. I bought mine at CVS but I'm still having problems with it. I just can't get the image to transfer onto the stamper or if I do I cant get the whole image to transfer. But I just found a new drugstore stamping kit made by Fing'ers, it comes with 1 plate, a stamper, scraper and a bottle of stamping nail polish. I only tried it once real quick but I could tell this one works better. Im going to do a review on it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Are you sure you removed the blue plastic covering? I did the same thing before realizing that was problem... they stick that plastic on so perfect and tight you can't hardly tell...

    ReplyDelete
  47. OMG, this is AMAZING!! I'm DYING here! I found this on a walk at WalMart at 2am and actually squealed and jumped up and down a little bit! My husband just shook his head at me and said, "Sure, whatever..." Poor guy doesn't get it, but he humors me!

I'm so out of practice stamping, but I'm really digging it! I've stamped in the past but wanted the double-ended stamper so badly! This is such a good deal, and the image plates are so adorable! (Even though I think yours are cuter!)

I wish I had the cash to pick up a few to give away on my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  48. OK first off let me say I am so a virgin at this nail stamping thing. Second let me say I feel like a total idiot! I never noticed the protective coat on the plates and for the life of me I could not get the polish to adhere so I could pick up the design with the stamper. Thank you so much for your post you saved me from throwing this back in the pack and seeing if I could get my money back because it did not work. I am off now to see if since I took that plastic off if I can get some nail designs going. Gonads konads information is vital they should make a note of this in the instructions.

  49. I bought this set from Rite aid for my daughter for xmas....i loved it so i went and bought one at Sally's....both sets are the plates shown on package. I also own a huge collection of konad plates, bundle monster, and red angel...yes, im obssessed LOL I have been stamping for a while now and would like to give a few hints ive discovered. When I first started my designs wouldnt transfer...this was due to me pushing down and smooshing stamp onto plate.....doesnt work! You must lightly roll stamp on plate....instinct makes u think u should press hard but u dont. This will actually prevent the transfer! Also, I do own several stamping polishes but found out that reg polishes work too! I also use Sally Hansen Insta-dry polishes....the silver actually worked better than the konad stamping polish! Also...def do lightly file ur stamper...it wont hurt it...it will get a build up sometimes of residue from polish remover and prevent transfer. I do this every other stamp. One last thing... i actually prefer the kit from rite aid's stamper over my konad stamper! Only because this one has a white surface and u can see what youve stamped better than Konads pink rubber. I use the Salon Express stamper for all my plates...works amazing! Once you get good at this...u can try multi-colored designs as well! For example...a red rose with a green stem!

  50. have you found that stamping on gel polish doesn't work? I don't know if it's the polish I'm stamping ON or stamping WITH that is the problem.
I bought this kit plus a few sets of plates and can't wait to get started. I'm all about collecting then trying. =)

  51. Have you girls had trouble stamping on gel polish (gelish)? I don't know if it's the polish I'm stamping ON or the polish I'm stamping WITH that's not working. I tried a couple different polishes and after reading your comments I think it might be the thin polish.

I bought this kit on-line along with a bunch of plates and can't wait to get started. I'm all about collecting then trying. =)

  57. I bought this at big lots today ($6.50) and I can't wait to use it. The plates are true to what's on the package.. the only thing that's different is that my stamper isn't double sided. It only has the large head.

  59. The plate SE10 is completely identical to the Fing'rs Flirt nail art plate (available in a 2-pack bonus package) B65, and another Konad plate. A couple of designs on SE03 seem similar to Fing'rs plate B17 as well.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This looks like so much fun!! And your nails look great!! Im not 100% sure, but it seems like I saw this kit at Big Lots the last time I was there...I didn't notice the price or anything (or even if it was the same exact one)...it was just one of those things my eyes grazed over while checking out the Philosophy stuff...but of course now Im intrigued and HAVE to go to BL to see if in fact it WAS this kit I saw (and if it was, I bet it'll be a little cheaper than at Rite Aid:)) Too bad the closest BL is 45 min away:( anyway, thanks for the awesome post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yup I saw this as big lots too, when I was searching for philosophy items lol. I.don't remember the exact price...maybe around $5-$6. I got the same set from walmart and it has the same plates it shows. I like the ones you got though! But we ain't have any rite aids here :(

    ReplyDelete
  62. Well, I went back to Big Lots yesterday....and they had TONS of Salon Express nail stamp kits...like prob 20 or 30!! AND the best part...they were $6.50!! So of course I picked one up...I havent had a chance to try it out yet, but I will today....one thing though....Is it just me or is it ALOT smaller in real person?? I mean it really is the perfect size considering the designs you put on your nails are small anyway, but from your great pics, I guess I thought it was gonna be a lil bigger, oh well!! haha...I hope everybody has a great Friday and a great 3-day holiday weekend!!!:)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh and I forgot to put that the disks I received in mine WERE the same disks that were pictured on the package...so I guess that there are at least two different sets out there....only thing is you won't know which one you got until you open it?!?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yeah, I got mine in the Walmart As Seen on TV section, and got the plates pictured on the package (SE 18, 19, 20, 21, & 22). It seems to be the general consensus that there are two sets out there, with Walmart & CVS (& Big Lots, according to Mel) getting the plates on the package, and Rite Aid looks like the second set. I'm a little disappointed because I really wanted that argyle plate. But I did get a cute turtle and a seahorse, so I'm okay for now lol. I haven't tried it yet, but when I'm ready to take my DIY cheetah mani off, I will probably be playing with this :)

  66. I found this today at ROSS (like Jillian S.) for $6.99! It was definitely worth it! My mom and I had also seen this at Walgreens and at Sally's for $9.99. We just spent the last 30 minutes playing around with it and I totally feel like a pro thanks to this post! I've been using some old wet n wild polishes that I was ready to throw out too! I feel so thrifty!

I got the plates on the box and I LOVE them, but I also REALLY want the ones you got. Is there anyway to get those too? Do I have to buy another stamper? How can I be sure?

  69. Hi, i just bought this - 1st time trying stamping, hehe.

Found that some of the designs were not so deeply engraved, so the scraper always got all the nail polish off the design.

So I wanted to find out - is this an issue of skill / lack of practice (in scraping)? Or does the depth of engraving really make a lot of difference?
Also, any tips for doing the scraping better?
