Review: New Garnier Pure Clean Shampoo & Conditioner

Every time a drugstore brand releases a new silicone-free shampoo or conditioner, I'm always curious to try it. I have a love/hate relationship with silicones. Certain products that contain silicones work WONDERS on my hair, while others do the opposite. Some silicones, which are less water-soluble, can build up in my hair and leave it feeling flat, heavy and lifeless. Other silicones can make my hair soft and bouncy, so it's kind of a guessing game for me.  Either way, if you use products that contain silicones, it's always a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while, just to guard against product build-up. OK, enough about that!

If you're the type of person who likes to avoid ALL silicones in your haircare, I'm hoping this review can help you to better determine whether the new silicone-free Garnier Pure Clean products might be a good option for you.

Garnier Pure Clean Shampoo and Conditioner for Normal Hair
(retail: around $4 each, 13 oz)

(Whoops! As you can see in the photo above, I forgot to take a picture of these products before I started testing them. Oh well, at least you know I gave them a thorough testing, right?)

I got a fantastic deal on these products a few weeks back. Rite Aid was having a 2/$5 sale on all Garnier shampoos and conditioners, and I also had two $1 coupons from the Sunday paper, which means I paid a grand total of $3 for both the shampoo and conditioner. Gotta love sales + coupons!

As you can see in these photos, this is Garnier's "greener" option for haircare. These products contain no silicones, parabens or dyes, and they're quite biodegradable as well.

If you're a new reader, let me tell you that my hair is long, naturally wavy, and fine in texture (but I have a lot of it). I have oily roots, dry ends, and my hair is color-treated as well. I don't use a lot of heat on my hair (I wear it wavy most of the time), and I barely use styling products aside from the occasional leave-in conditioner, mousse or smoothing serum.

My top needs when it comes to a good shampoo are:
  • It should thoroughly cleanse my hair without leaving it feeling stripped or excessively dry
  • It should lather up easily and thoroughly
  • It should be easy to distribute through my long hair
  • It should rinse clean with little effort
  • It should not contribute to tangling
My top needs when it comes to a good conditioner are:
  • It should help detangle
  • It should make my hair feel moisturized
  • It should rinse easily yet leave a light, protective coating behind
  • It should, at the very least, not interfere with the curl of my hair (even better if it makes my hair more curly)
  • It should not weigh down my hair or leave it feeling greasy
  • Less than 24 hours after use, it should not make my roots oily
So if your hair type and needs are anything like mine, then you might be interested to know that these products did not work well for me. Given the product claims, I had such high hopes for Pure Clean but, sadly, they did little to improve or maintain the look or feel of my hair.

Let's start with the shampoo: it did lather easily and it was easy to distribute through my hair. It rinsed clean as well, but my hair felt dry after rinsing. It DID feel clean, but I couldn't get past the dryness.

The conditioner was easy to apply, and I was rather hopeful after noticing that it did a very decent job of detangling. In the shower, my hair feels smooth and silky after application. When I rinse this conditioner out of my hair, it does leave a nice protective coating behind, which doesn't feel too heavy or greasy.

But the real issues come when my hair is dry. The "healthy hair that shines" just isn't there for me. My hair looks dull and kind of lifeless after using these products, and my curls are almost nonexistent. Also, the longer I use these products, the more dry my hair feels. Every time I look in the mirror, I kind of get sad because I have no shine, no bounce, no "oomph" to my hair after using this shampoo and conditioner.

Like I mentioned at the top of this review, I'm not a complete silicone junkie, and I've used other products that have been silicone-free in the past. So I knew going into this that I wasn't going to get the results I get when I use products that DO contain silicones. BUT, I was just hoping that the shine and weightlessness that are part of the product description would actually be visible on my hair. They're not.

FINAL VERDICT:  Garnier Pure Clean Shampoo and Conditioner for Normal Hair are not a love-match for my particular haircare needs. I find the shampoo lathers well and rinses clean, and the conditioner does a really nice job of detangling my hair. However, when my hair is dry, it looks flat, dull and lifeless, and my curls are weighed down to the point where I need to use a curl-enhancing styling product to bring them back to life. If you're used to silicone-free products already, and your hair is in healthier condition than mine, then these products might perform much better for you. Unfortunately, they just don't do the trick for me. By the way, the fragrance of both the shampoo and conditioner is very similar to other Garnier products, with maybe just a tad more of a green apple note.

Have you tried the new Garnier Pure Clean products yet? If so, how did they work for you? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I won't even go near this. I have absolutely NO luck with Garnier hair products AT ALL and the worst part is that I really want them to work for me as they are so accessible and you can always find a sale and a coupon.

Thanks for quelling any curiosity and insanity I would have had torturing myself over whether I should purchase or not!

  2. I really wanted to try this because it smells like apples to me, maybe not such a good idea... The Garnier Sleek & Shine shampoo was okay for me though

  3. Like commenter gggggg above, I've never had any luck with Garnier products. I was curious in trying some of their products again and possibly this line, but I think after your review I'll pass. Thanks for the review and saving me the money. :P

  4. Sorry to hear it didn't work out well for you. I have medium-length mostly straight with slight wave hair. Very oily roots (which makes me a huge fan of your dry shampoo reviews). I didn't have very high hopes for this shampoo/conditioner but I was very pleasantly surprised. The shampoo actually kept my oily roots at bay for TWO whole days (a record!). But I should say that my hair has done well with Garnier products in the past.

  5. ggggg: Wow, I actually was relieved to hear you say that, because I haven't had good luck with Garnier haircare products either. I seriously thought I was alone, because I know their products work so well for SO many people. Glad to know it's not just me, and I'm so glad I could help give you a bit of extra info on these new products.

cjx3pooh: Well if the Sleek & Shine works well for you, I say stick with it! It's always great to find shampoos and conditioners that fit your needs. :)

Stephanie: Like I said to ggggg above, I'm so glad to know I'm not alone here! I haven't had great luck with Garnier haircare in the past, which really bums me out because you can get such great deals on their products (like I did with the products in this review). Glad to know we're not alone.

  6. Eugene: Thank you SO much for your feedback regarding these products! I love hearing from people who have had success with something that didn't work for me--it helps so much. You know, I WISH this kept my oily roots at bay for as long as it did for you--I got about 24 hours from this one. At any rate, I am SO glad these new products worked for you (and that Garnier haircare on the whole works for you). That's fantastic! Thanks again for sharing your experience with us. :)

  7. I always get suckered into buying GArnier products because they SOUND great, but they always turn out to be just "meh" at best.

    P.S. I love the purple!

  8. I don't know about anyone else, but I find that Garnier shampoos and conditioners tend to make my hair fall out. I don't know if that's because they make my hair really dry, causing it to be brittle and break easily or what. Anyone else have that problem?

  9. I just bought the shampoo (already have my HG conditioner GVP Conditioning Balm) . I was running out of my loved Tresemme Naturals (its really good imo) and decided to see if this was about the same. I just used it for the first time today. So far so good but I also put the GVP Sebastian 9 Potion in my hair and that stuff always makes me hair look good (thanks for the rec on that one G)

  10. Dang. I was going to get some at Walgreens on Sunday, 4 for $10 with $4 RR back. I also had 4 $1 off coupons. I might re-think my plan now. Maybe it's a good shampoo for the hubby and kids? ;)

  11. Jessi: It sounds like we've had similar experiences! I was really hoping this would be "the one" to convert me, but...no. :(

Sarah: Hum...I haven't experienced any breakage, but dryness? Yes. So I can understand that if these products cause extreme dryness on your hair, that breakage might be a result. Sorry to hear that. :(

Harlow: I'm glad to hear the shampoo is working for you so far! I'll try switching it up with another conditioner, maybe! :)

Lilybeans: I would still try it! You never know, and if it doesn't work for you, you can always return it if you've got your receipt (Wags is great about that). And you're right--it could be a good option for the hubby and kids! Keep me posted? Thanks!

  14. I did try this shampoo and I really liked it! Of course everyones hair is different...Seems like you and I have pretty similar hair (wavy, long and color treated) and I'm using Yes to Cucumbers shampoo and conditioner. Really great for wavy, color treated hair! :D Might wanna give that a shot!

  15. Hey G! (That's what I'll start calling you :)) Thanks for the review. Have you tried Suave Professionals new Lavishing curls line since you mentioned curly hair.

  16. Hi G!
I've read on the long hair community forum that this is great for conditioner only washing.
I use VO5 kiwi squeeze for conditioner only washing and it's fantastic! My scalp and hair have never felt more awesome! You should give it a shot. I have stick straight, oily hair but I've hear this works wonders for wavey hair. If you decide to try it, let me know.

  18. I use Garnier products, and I tried the Pure Clean conditioner, and it was terrible. It made my hair extremely greasy, heavy, and gross. I haven't had this problem with any other product.

  19. I know I'm a little late to the party with my comment, but I just recently bought these products and should have read your review first! My hair is not shiny or weightless..and it's oily the very next morning, not even 24 hours later! I've never had that problem before. Good thing I have left over shampoo and conditioner!

  20. I used this product and had exactly the same results as the post. Dry, lifeless.

  21. I've been through every shampoo in the beauty aisle. I like the smell of Garnier and their serum, thickening spray, and curl gel are great. I like to be product-loyal so if I'm using their serum, I want to use the shampoo too. The fragrances match.
This one does have an odd feel but lathers well and has no silicone. It doesn't have that heavy "Pantene" feel if you know what I mean.
I change shampoo a lot but hope this one doesn't disappoint. Comes in large and small bottles. Great price too.
