Review: CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Brightening Eyeliner

I really like the CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Brightening Eyeshadow Quad for Hazel Eyes (click here for my review) so I was hoping that I'd love the eyeliner from this collection as well. Sadly, this isn't quite the case. Let's take a closer look.

I purchased "Vivid Ruby" which is actually for green eyes, not hazel (they were all out of the eyeliner for hazel eyes so I guess it must be a very popular shade).

To me, the name "Vivid Ruby" doesn't match the color of this liner. At all.

Is it just me or does this look like a standard dark brown to you? I'm not getting any "ruby" in this whatsoever.

And now let's see how it passes the rub-test:

This pic was taken after running my finger across the line twice.

Here's what the liner looks like on:

I've got to say that, even though this looks like a standard shade of brown, there IS something about this color that made the green in my eyes totally pop (and that's why I'm showing you this blurry pic--I just want you to see how much green is coming through!). It was so strange yet pretty darn neat at the same time.

But I'm afraid that this is where my love affair with the Exact Eyelights Brightening Eyeliner ends. After wearing this for 2 hours in 80 degree weather, my boyfriend stopped me and said:

"What's up with your eyes?"

Naturally I thought he was admiring how pretty and green my eyes looked. But then he said said:

"Your eye makeup never smears like that. Are you ok?"

I basically wanted to throw my new liner into the trash the very minute he said that. My boyfriend rarely notices things like makeup malfunctions, so I knew it must be pretty bad. Sure enough, I looked in the mirror and it was a brown, smeary mess under my eyes. Bah!

Sooo. Yes, the color is sort of magical in that it brings out the green in my eyes, but is it worth the smeary, runny mess that it leaves behind? Sorry, CoverGirl, but I'm sticking with the eyeshadow quad and returning the liner.

I would love to hear if you've tried this product and if you've had a better experience with it than I have.

  1. It looks like a brown with maybe some copper sparks, hard to tell from your pictures. Copper is usually flattering with green eyes, in my opinion. I have no idea why they came up with the name ruby :P

  2. Hey Phyrra--I'm getting no copper in this at all (looking at it right now). I think maybe there's a teeny tiny hint of red in this brown that's pulling the green in my eyes, but it's really not even visible to the naked eye. It's kind of crazy! lol. :)

  3. You know, I just read a rave review for this product the other day (not this color though), only it didn't have pictures to back up the review. I'm so glad I read this, because I was thinking of purchasing the Vivid Ruby liner, as I have green eyes. I will most definitely NOT be purchasing now. It does look like a plain ol' brown liner to me, of which I already own several. And if it's not long-wearing, I'm all set.

    Thanks!!

  4. Hey Emma! I'm so glad I could help you out! Yeah...I have to say that if you already have many basic brown liners, you probably don't need to add this one to your collection. But I have read that other people have had much better luck with the staying power, so your experience could be different from mine. My eye area is pretty oily, but even so, my Styli-Style liners *never* run like this. This liner gathered in the corners of my eyes and then smeared downward after just two hours. Not a good look! :)

  5. Oh no! When the boy has to point stuff like that out, it's not good! I agree that if you already own similar liners, don't knock yourself out trying to fork out the cash-- because the magic in this line doesn't reside in the liners. I think it's in the Eyelights Shadow Quads myself! The liners to me are a good addition, but not necessary. I gotta admit, with a name like Vivid Ruby, it wasn't very vivid :( I've used Vibrant Pearl and the formula is okay for me as long as I keep it close to the lashline! I didn't experience a marathon run or anything with it on-- but I can see where the staying power would be in jeopardy. It wouldn't be pretty! Get us something good with your refund! xo

  7. So glad to hear this! I have been wanting to buy the whole set for awhile now, but I am a stickler for smearing eyeliners. You saved me :)

  8. Oh I hate it when people points out your make up - because usually it means that it is bad :p

Like "Why is your face so sparkly?"... UGH!

What an evil little eye liner!

  9. Oh, hey, I reviewed the matching mascara for this today! Great minds think alike, I guess. The mascara was also a disappointment.

  11. Hey Amber! Good to know that the Vivid Pearl worked better for you than Vivid Ruby did for me, but I agree--they really didn't need to add these to the collection since the star of the show is the e/s. Oh and the boy actually said to me, "I bet you're going to talk about this on your blog" when he discovered my smudged liner. lol!! Oh, and I'm currently at a loss as to what to get with my refund! I think maybe that Ageless blush you wrote about, maybe? But I don't know which shade to get (they all look so pretty in the store). xo

  12. Hey giz89! LOL! Yeah, that's the worst question EVER. :) I'm glad I saved you, but I should also add that others have had better luck with this liner so if you eventually reconsider, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Hopefully you won't have anyone asking YOU if you're ok. lol!! :)

Hey Christina! Soooo glad I could help. Really, the star of the show in this collection is the e/s quads so I'd suggest looking into those first if you want to buy anything. xo

Hey ndoodles! OMG, I totally agree. I've gotten the "Why is your face so sparkly?" question myself! The worst! :)

Hey Leigh! Oh that's fantastic! I'll read your review asap. This is the only product in the collection that I haven't tried, and I've been scared to try it, actually. I was so afraid that it would disappoint...guess I should trust my instincts, eh? :)

Hey Michelle! I would definitely suggest trying the eyeshadow quads in this collection before you try anything else. They are sheer and shimmery and quite lovely. :)

    Excellent review.

  14. Hey Beda! lol, yeah, I have to admit that you're probably not missing much (unless you don't already own a basic brown liner, which I *highly* doubt! lol!). :)
