Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance vs. Jordana Magenta Magic

After posting part two of my series featuring the brand new glitter polishes from Jordana (part three to come soon!), I received several comments from readers asking if the Jordana shade Magenta Magic might be a good dupe of Revlon Facets of Fuchsia (when layered over black, of course). Well since Revlon Facets of Fuchsia (recently re-released under the name Scandalous) is a near-identical dupe of Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance, and I happen to OWN Bad Romance, it would be downright silly of me not to compare the two, right? Right!

Left: Jordana Magenta Magic (retail: $2.99, 0.5 oz)
Right: Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance (retail: $18, 0.5 oz)

For the first set of swatches, I applied two coats of each color to each nail with NO base color underneath and no top coat:

Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance contains small and chunky magenta glitter in a sheer black jelly base (again, Revlon Facets of Fuchsia, aka Scandalous, is a dupe for this shade--you can check out side-by-side photos here).

Jordana Magenta Magic contains small and chunky magenta glitter in a clear base.

Right off the bat, you can see that the glitter in Magenta Magic is much more dense than the glitter in Bad Romance. Also, the black jelly base in Bad Romance seems to "dull" the sparkle of the glitter, when compared to how sparkly (metallic) the glitter in Magenta Magic appears.

In terms size, I think both the small and chunky glitter in Bad Romance is nearly identical to the small and chunky glitter in Magenta Magic.

For this set of swatches, I applied one coat of each polish over a black creme base color. I also applied one layer of clear top coat to each nail:

As you can see, the vibrancy and metallic quality of the glitter in Magenta Magic really stands out against the more subtle sparkle of Bad Romance (again, I think this is due to the fact that Bad Romance has a black jelly base, which dulls down the glitter).

Swatched over black, you can really see how much more densely-packed the glitter is in Magenta Magic, even with just one coat.

Jordana Magenta Magic is NOT a dupe of Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance (or Revlon Facets of Fuchsia, aka Scandalous) when worn over black. BUT, if you're just trying to achieve the general feel of Bad Romance, and you're on a tight budget, I think Magenta Magic worn over black is a nice alternative. And of course, if you aren't happy with the subtlety of the glitter in Bad Romance and you want something with more bling, then you will definitely be happy with Magenta Magic.

PS: If you own a sheer, black jelly polish (which I don't), you might be able to achieve even better (closer) results.

I hope this helps those of you who were curious how the two polishes compared!

  3. Another "dupe" for Bad Romance for those of you near an Ulta or within Europe, like myself - Essence's Nail Art Special Effect! topper in "it's purplicious".

  4. I think if you made a "jelly sandwich" manicure with the jordana glitter layered between the sheer, black jelly... it'd be a perfect dupe!

  5. BTW, it would be really easy to make "Bad Romance" from the cheaper Jordana.... Just take half a bottle of clear, add a fourth black and a fourth purple glitter. So cheap! Hope that helps someone....

  10. Wet n Wild "Night Prowl" has fuchsia microglitter in a sheer black jelly base. It looks just like these without the larger glitter chunks, so it's more subtle.
