My New Holy Grail Detangling Product: Kinky-Curly Knot Today Natural Leave In / Detangler

I raved about this product on my Instagram several weeks ago, but I wanted to be absolutely sure about it before I posted this review. Now that I've been using Kinky-Curly Knot Today for several weeks, I can safely and confidently say that it is my new holy grail detangling product. Ever. Of all time.

And guess what? If you want to try it for yourself after you read this review, it's $11.99 at Target and it's going to be 20% off tomorrow only (6/28) at Target HERE (details about the sale HERE). If you miss this sale, you can also get it on Amazon HERE for $12.75 (free shipping with Prime) if you can't find it locally. There are other retailers that carry it as well--Walgreens carries it HERE (you can click that link for an in-store locator). You can also purchase directly from the Kinky-Curly website HERE.

Kinky-Curly Knot Today Natural Leave In / Detangler
(retail: around $11.99; 8.0 oz.)

First, let me tell you that I've been on a quest for the perfect detangler for a few years now. The various children's detangler sprays (L'Oreal Kids, Johnson & Johnson, Suave, Target Up & Up, etc.) that I used to use all stopped working for me a while back, and they all seem to weigh my natural waves down and make my hair a bit flat and straight.

So for the past few years, I have been searching and searching websites like Makeup Alley, Sephora, Ulta, Amazon, Target, etc. for the keywords "detangler" and "detangling" and I've purchase many, many products that receive raves from people with hair types similar to mine. Here is just a partial list of the products I have purchased over the last two years or so:

  • Pravana Nevo Intense Therapy Leave-In
  • Pantene Pro-V Moisture Mist Detangler
  • Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution
  • John Masters Organics Detangler
  • Paul Mitchell The Detangler
  • Neuma Tangle Me Free Conditioner
  • Joico Daily Care Leave-In Detangler
  • Bumble and bumble Prep

If you opened my cabinet in my hallway right now, you'd basically see a detangler store. I have even more products than what I've listed above; these are just the most popular and well-known products that I've tried. And guess what? For one reason or another, NONE of these products worked for me. Either they worked to detangle but weighed my hair down, or they didn't do anything at all to help detangle my hair.

So in a fit of desperation to find the perfect detangler for my fine, long, naturally wavy hair, I went to one of my favorite "curly girl" websites: NaturallyCurly.com (why I didn't think to search there first? Apparently I was in a tangle fog and not thinking clearly). So I did some searching on their site, and found over a thousand reviews (many of them five stars) for Kinky-Curly Knot Today. I ordered a bottle from Amazon immediately (at that time, the price was better on Amazon but now it's better at Target).

Which brings us to my review:

Made in USA

Kinky-Curly Knot Today is a leave-in conditioner that will help you manage your hair throughout the day. You can use it for conditioning and detangling purposes. It offers a natural conditioning treatment that's safe for your hair. This paraben-free hair conditioner has no added preservatives and protects your hair against damage. It's free of sodium lauryl sulfate and other harsh chemicals. The creamy formula of this alcohol-free hair conditioner makes it easy to apply. It's suitable for all hair types.

After washing hair, apply generously and work through troubled areas with a wide tooth comb.

Ingredients:
Mango Fruit Extract Organic, Slippery Elm Organic, Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) Root Organic, Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Schoenanthus) Organic, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance

Standard flip-top lid

The pic of this product on the back of my hand is about the size of two peas. This is all I need for my hair, which hits me at about the middle of my back (your results may vary; always experiment with different amounts until you find the amount that works best for you!). Because I only need a tiny bit per application, and the bottle contains 8.0 oz, this bottle is lasting me FOREVER. Seriously, I've been using this product almost every day for several weeks, and I have still barely made a dent.

I apply Kinky-Curly Knot Today from about my ears all the way to my ends on my wet hair right after I get out of the shower. I like to let it sit for a bit to let it work its magic, and then I grab my KareCo Tangle Buster Brush (which you can still get with free shipping through the end of June via that link) and let me tell you--it is a WINNING COMBO. My tangles brush out between 50-80% easier vs. when I don't use Kinky-Curly Knot Today. I give it that range because it really depends on how tangly my hair is to begin with--if it's SUPER tangled, then it helps by about 50% (vs. when I don't use it). If it's not too tangled, it loosens the light tangles so easily and helps by about 80% (vs. when I don't use it).

Now if you read my KareCo Tangle Buster review, then you know that this brush is a miracle worker when it comes to my hair (which is so prone to tangling). I still stand by that statement, and it's now my favorite detangling brush (I prefer it over The Wet Brush and Tangle Teezer). HOWEVER, using Kinky-Curly makes the tangles slip apart even easier, but this product works great with traditional brushes and combs as well. You don't have to use the Tangle Buster with it--I just prefer it.

What I really love about Kinky-Curly is that not only does it truly help tangles slip apart easier, but it also does not add any weight, grease, oil, crunch, or residue to my hair. It doesn't make my hair flat, it doesn't make my waves flat, and it doesn't cause my hair to be frizzy. It provides some mild anti-frizz protection, so in that respect it does work  as a leave-in conditioner but I prefer it as a detangler. You can easily use other styling products in conjunction with this product if you find that it's not enough on its own--I have used it with curl creams, other leave-in conditioners, hair oils, you name it. It works beautifully underneath every styling product I've paired it with.

Another thing I love is the scent. To me, it brings back some nice memories, since it reminds of old-school pomade. Back in the day, I used to date a guy who was a rockabilly/greaser and that boy had a beautiful head of jet black hair (no disrespect to Mr. G, who also has a beautiful head of hair!). Anyway, he used one of those old-school pomades (I think it was either Murray's or Royal Crown) and this detangler reminds of it. It's sort of hard to describe, but it kind of smells like mango a little bit, but it also smells a bit like candle wax or surfboard wax. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, don't worry--it's not a heavy scent and it dissipates quickly.

FINAL VERDICT: if you suffer from tangles and you have yet to find the perfect detangling product, I think this is definitely one to consider. As I mentioned above, I have tried a zillion detanglers over the past few years, and NONE of them have worked for me like this one does. It's like magic for my tangle-prone hair, and I never, ever want to be without it. Official holy grail status.

  1. Your hair sounds *exactly* like my hair -- length, texture, curl, tangles, etc. I'm gonna have to give this stuff a shot! Thanks for the recommendation, G!

    1. Oh girl, if you hair is like mine, you NEED to try this! I'm serious--I have never tried one better in terms of detangling and NOT weighing down my hair or making my curls flat. Please please let me know what you think if you give it a whirl? Keeping my fingers crossed!

    2. My hair is the same as both of yours also, but to really make it a hot mess, my pet parrot loves to fly to the top of my head and he really makes it super tangled!! Naughty birdie!!

  2. Great review! I try to only wash my curly hair once every 5-7 days, and it can be a tangled mess when I try to wash it. I'm going to try this stuff and see if it helps.

    1. Thank you, Nidia! I cannot wait to see how it works for you! I have gone 2-3 days without washing just to test this on super tangled hair, and it works so, so well! Please do come back and let me know what you think? :)

  3. Yes Knot today is an overall crowd pleaser. G, you should also try some Giovanni hair products. My curls melt apart with their lines. You can find it at tj maxx, marshalls, etc.

    1. OMG, I love Giovanni! Their leave-in was one of my very first reviews on my blog back in 2009. :)

  4. I like the Nevo leave-in, but am not married to it. What made that one not work for you, out of curiosity?

    1. Well it LOOKS super cool in the bottle (right?) and I like the way it made my hair feel, but I bought it because I had read that it was excellent for detangling. But it didn't help detangle my hair AT ALL. :( Does it help your hair with detangling?

  6. I bought the Verb Ghost Oil after reading about it here and Love it, was wondering if you still use it? It works great on my hair for detangling right out of the shower. How does the Kinky Curly compare to the Verb?
    Thanks!

  7. Would you still use the Verb Ghost Oil with it G?

  8. I want to try this, though my hair is already detangled when I get out of the shower. I comb conditioner through my hair with a wide-tooth comb.

  9. I highly recommend detangling hair in the shower after applying conditioner. I want to try this just for added moisture and curl control.

  10. I'm curious. I just cut my hair into a layered bob, so the tangles are much subdued, but when it gets longer ...

I do love the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard Gel, though. I found it for $2 in a clearance bin at Rite Aid and fell in love. It doesn't leave my hair crunchy and smells so good.

  11. Thank you! I've got the Tangle buster and like it, so I'm expecting another winner here! Fyi I bought a wooden paddle brush by Aveda a while back and it's another winner!

  12. I used to swear by this stuff. I got a little tired of the scent and texture, and found it only worked best with Kinky Curly Curling Custard, so I moved on to Carol's Daughter Marula oil detangling milk. But it is great

  13. YES! Thank you SO MUCH for this review. I made a homemade hair detangler with slippery elm and marshmallow root a few years ago that worked wonders on my super long hair. I only made it once because it was pretty labor intensive, but I'm totally going to give this product a go since it has those ingredients! They're little miracle workers, I swear!

  15. I love knot today and it's one my holy grail products for my hair (kinky afro texture hair that is relaxed). It's such a great product that so many people with different hair textures can use this

  16. G, I just wanted to say that I just picked this up at Target today based on this review, and I am impressed! I have very long, very straight, very very fine hair down to my waist. When I was younger I used to hide from my mother when it came time to brush my hair due to the tangles. The Wet Brush helped some, but let me tell you: two pea sized dollops of this product with the Wet Brush is a winning combination. My hair combed out so easily! I can't believe it. The only thing that concerns me is that IIRC, slippery elm is an endangered species?

    1. I was just looking at the comments to see if anyone with straight hair tried this! I have longish straight, superfine hair that tangles so easily and I swear by the Wet Brush and was thinking of trying this product. With your feedback I might just pick it up at Target today!

  17. I picked this up a while back on your recommendation but it isn't really working for me. I have thin curly hair and while this product is great for detangling, no anti-frizz help continues after it dries.

I did see it on the shelf at target last week which some of your readers may find helpful.

I'm going to abandon the bottle and head back to Paul Mitchell skinny serum.
