The Wednesday Question

What are some universally-loved beauty products that do NOT work for you?

I've asked this question before, but I love seeing your responses so I'm asking again! The first product that comes to mind for me right now is Maybelline Full 'N Soft Mascara. This product is loved by so many, but it did absolutely nothing for my lashes (no length, no volume). I really wanted it to work for me because I love so many other Maybelline mascaras, but I just didn't get the results that others seem to get.

  1. MAC Mineralized Skin Finish Natural!! Although this product is high end and loved by all, it doesn't work for me.

  2. I had a similar experience with Maybelline Great Lash. I don't understand why it consistently makes Best Of beauty products lists.

    1. I have to agree on the Maybelline Great Lash. It's OK but I can find cheaper mascaras which give me better results. I suspect half of it might be the distinctive packaging.

    2. Me three! And the limited edition colored versions were no better for me. :(

    3. Another vote here for Great Lash! It is the worst mascara, IMO, I swear it does nothing. I'm with you guys in wondering how it consistantly ends up being voted one of the best. How?

      Delete
    4. I agree about the Maybelline Great Lash original but the BIG version actually works well.

    5. ELF mascaras works better (I feel like) and are cheaper!

    6. My Mom swears by Great Lash but not me; I used it years ago and didn't like it at all. I used Loreal until they discontinued my stuff. Now I go cheap with NYC and WnW, good stuff. This week I need to go to Kmart for ELF eyeshadow primer and see about getting some ELF mascara... not that I need any... I stocked up for a good long time on the other 2 brands during some BOGO free sales. I went a little crazy.

    7. I agree! I despise Great Lash! How the heck does it keep winning awards?!

    8. Another vote for Great Lash. I WANT to like it... but, it flakes and smudges something awful on me. I thought maybe the colored versions would be different, but, nope... same issue.

    9. I didn't like the great lash at first either but I've found that the tiny brush is GREAT for doing my sparse lower lashes! It's the perfect size. I keep a tube of that stuff around just for that.

    10. Too funny. It's the only mascara I'll use, and I have all the LE colors also. Love this stuff.

    11. HATE the regular great lash - i'm actually extremely allergic to it because it contains shellac. but have you tried maybelline lots of lashes? it looks just about the same in the pink and green tube and it's my holy grail!!

    12. Great Lash! I'd rather have none at all.

      Delete
    13. I bought Great Lash thinking it must be worth the hype, but for me....it did nothing! Maybe people just like it for nostalgic reasons?!?!?

  3. benefit's they're real mascara! i had such high hopes for it because beauty bloggers everywhere seem to rave about it, but it was a major fail for me. the bristles on the brush are SO SHARP and the formula just seemed painfully average. luckily i only bought the mini. thankfully i think i've found my HG mascara in maybelline's the rocket!

    1. The they're real mascara is so overrated. And, yes, those bristles. I don't know what they were thinking. I scratched my cornea while applying it and I am always super careful. Dangerous.

      Delete
    2. Totally agree on the They're Real mascara. I got a sample of it, and was so excited to finally try it. The bristles poked my eye, and the formula only weighed down my lashes.

      Delete
  4. The L'Oreal Voluminous mascara. I even tried the waterproof formula. Everyone loves that mascara but all it did for me was smudge and flake not even an hour or two after application. I was so disappointed!

  5. I agree on the Great Lash. Stuff ended up all over my face by the time I was done. I don't know how anyone can put it on and not end up looking like they got punched. Did not work for me at all.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Bare minerals. I've tried it at different points in my life. Just doesn't work on my skin :(

    ReplyDelete
  7. Milk of Magnesia, gets rave reviews for folks with oily skin but for me it didn't really do much. Same with the UD setting facial sprays...no luck there either. As far as true cosmetics, I don't get the hype with the Revlon balm stain pencils. I bought 2 of them, a lilac-y pink and a nude. The cooler toned one morphs into a garish fuschia stain, while the warmer nude turns a bad brown tinged orange. Never felt the need to venture into other shades after that. The Matte pencil balms by Revlon though...now those work great for me!

    1. For me, it's just the lighter shades that morph in the Revlon Balm Stain line. I never have this problem with the brighter, deeper, more pigmented shades. Don't give up on them, BB! I swear they're lovely (and they have great staying power). PS: Did you see my response on the Love 2 Love post?

  8. Mine would have to be Revlon Colorstay foundation. I don't know if I just didn't have the right shade or what, but that stuff was downright cakey on me.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Revlon face products broke me out, but that foundation blended so well with my skin.

    2. Yes, the color stay foundation looks awful on me! Way too cakey, not matter how or how much I apply.

  9. L'oreal carbon black mascara (one clumpy mess), maybelline great lash and full and soft, Jordana mascara, Clinique black honey (very drying on my lips) ,MAC foundation and most MAC products in general. I really don't understand the MAC hype.

    ReplyDelete
  10. NARS Sheer Glow is the first to come to mind. I really, really wanted to love it...but it dries out my skin horribly, pools in pores, and the closest color match isn't the greatest. I went back to Maybelline Dream Smooth!

Hourglass ambient powder in Ethereal. Supposedly gives you a glow, blurs impections, makes your makeup look airbrushed. It does none of those things on me, I was so disappointed. Maybelline Dream Wonder powder does nicely, though.

Maybelline Dream Lumi. I think I have the lightest color, but it is still a little too dark on me for a highlighter. Also I was not impressed with the formula at all.

Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick. It dries out my lips and the perfume smell is awful.

    1. I tried the Ethereal powder for two months, and finally just took it back last weekend. For $45, I want the product to "wow" me. Sadly, it didn't.

    2. the Moisture Renew lipsticks looked awful on me as well. it swatched nicely but on my lips, it was a hot mess

  11. The Maybelline color elixers didn't rock my socks off the way they seemed to for everyone else. They were just fine, not life changing. Benefit's Hoola Bronzer was also just okay - still a little orange on my skin; I prefer ashy-brown shades that look more like shadows. And pretty much any hair product by LUSH - though they all smelled amazing, they made my hair feel really dry and rough.

    1. I have to agree with the benefit's bronzer as well as nars laguna didn't work for me either.

  12. Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation - horrible on my combination skin, clung to my flaky areas & made my t-zone like a shiny beacon after 2 hours! And I've been having the same problem with the Revlon balm stain in Honey - lovely pink shade at first; vibrant magenta after 10 minutes! Very strange!

  13. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. It never worked on me, always clumpy and it melts even in AC places.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bare minerals! The foundation broke me out!! I can't use any of it on my face! I've tried using warmth by itself and it still broke me out! It makes me so sad :(

    ReplyDelete
  15. Any Chanel lipstick (not glosses). Every one I have ever tried just becomes little balls of wax on my lips

    ReplyDelete
  16. Gosh I would have to say Maybelline The Rocket mascara. The stuff just doesn't work for me and it is way too hard to take off at the end of the day for me. So I feel that I use it more on rainy days. Personally I cannot wait to finish the tube I have.

  17. MAC Nail Polish. $16 of chips in 12 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  18. MAC amplified lipstick, Most NARS lippies, Carmex, and any other lip product that contains lanolin makes me break out in hives around my mouth. I understand that it's a very luxurious ingredient, but I wish manufacturers would switch to something else instead.

  19. Neither Too Faced Shadow Insurance nor UD Primer Potion worked very well for me. I get better results from the Milani & WnW Fergie eyeshadow primers. I HATED Cover Girl Clump Crusher Mascara. Did absolutely nothing for me, no length, no volume. I might has well have had bare lashes. After hearing raves about the Eco Tools Pure Complexion Facial Sponge for sensitive skin I bought it, It is rather delicate and within a week I ripped a hole in it with my thumb.

    1. the same thing happened to me with the sponge! I think it's ju poorly made as the Boscia and My Konica Sponge brand ones have been holding up great for me.

  20. The Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. All it does is sit on my hair and leaves a funky white film. $10.00+ gone down the drain.

    1. That's unfortunate. I love that stuff!

    2. I have the same problem, so I've been using it as a regular conditioner. At least it smells great ;)

    3. Maybe I'll try it as a conditioner, thanks

  21. Any and all the major face primers with silicone in them- sure they originally look nice but they don't last at all on my skin, I hate the texture and they all cause me major break-outs!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Chanel Velvet Allure lipsticks dried my lips out )-: and I really wanted to love them because of the color choices.

    ReplyDelete
  23. WnW Fergie primer. Everyone says it's a dupe for higher end products, but on me it makes my shadow look flat and chalky. I have oilyish lids but it seems to dry them out too much. Even my most buttery shadows look patchy with that primer. Which sucks, because the price and availability are right!

  24. Mint julep by QH and the Mint and Lemon by Freemans both broke me out so badly. I'm still recovering from the Freemans mask. Also the moisture Renew lipsticks from Rimmel were a fail for me. Haha! it's funny how you mentioned Full and Soft from Maybelline because that is one of my favorite mascaras G LOL!

  25. Any concealer. No matter how many claims of being moisturising etc they always go dry and flakey and emphasise my bags and lines. I am 46 but there must be something out there that works???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Try Smashbox photo ready under eye concealer. It's the best one I've found. It doesn't emphasize the lines under my eye. Be sure to use just the teeniest, tiniest dab- the smallest amount possible with this or any other concealer and be sure to moisturize the area lightly before using the concealer.

      Delete
    2. I feel your pain! Either they don't cover my dark circles, or they accumulate in my fine lines by lunchtime. I tried Benefit BOING! when that was all the rage--big, expensive disappointment!

      Delete
  26. Maybelline Great Lash and Loreal's Voluminous mascaras. People rave about them all the time, but they both smudge and flake all over the place within the first two hours of wear.

Maybelline Baby Skin, which does absolutely nothing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Covergirl's 3 in 1 foundation! I continued to have to use concealer afterwards, plus it broke me out and dried out my skin. I had high hopes for it but ended up returning it.

    1. I can't stand Cover Girl 3-in-1 and people rave about it! I have combo skin and the stuff oxodizes and slides right off my face! I've given it 3 tries and it just doesn't work for me :(

  28. Maybelline "Great Lash" Mascara.
    I don't get it!

  29. UD primer potion. Does nothing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. anastasia brow gel it makes my eyebrow hard n feels weird when i move them!
i just rather use my essence clear mascara

    ReplyDelete
  31. The worst for me is the UD naked eyeshadows. I just don't get it with those. They flake, they're muddy, they have a ton of fall-out, don't go on smooth. I can't believe they're so loved by other women. I took both naked 1 & 2 back because the quality was so low. Their primer that came with it was sub-par also. BIG disappointment after all the hype I saw everywhere.

  32. Burt's Bees cuticle balm that everyone raves about. Stinks like Pledge and dries out my cuticles :( Now I use pure jojoba oil, love it!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I dislike that scent too! But it works if I sleep with gloves.

      Delete
    2. LOL Stinks like Pledge! I don't quite get the love for this one either. I have an old tin that seems a little dry, and picked up a new one to have in my purse to use at work during the winter. It's just okay. I picked up the Lush Lemony Flutter as well, also due to the repeated mentions in blog posts. It's best to use at night and of course I forget. I've got the Zoya Qtica Solid Gold gel oil stuff, various nail oil pens...gotta use'em for them to do any good! lol

  33. Maybelline Greaf Lash. Pointless!

  34. covergirl lashblast!! does NOTHING for my lashes...actually makes them look worse!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybelline and Revlon foundations. The deeper tones are too yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  36. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer... It doesn't cover my dark circles at all!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybelliene Great Lash. That stuff is bloody terrible. I'm fairly sure it only shows up on those Best Of lists because Maybelliene purchases the spots. That's really the only thing I can think of, because I've yet to meet anyone that truly likes it. It's utterly abysmal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Naked palette. I didn't really get seriously into eyeshadow until last year and bought into the hype. The eyeshadows too shimmery for my taste. Because I'm never one to waste, I use the naked only on my lid add mattes to my crease and

    ReplyDelete
  39. Accidentally, Hit publish before I was finished...lol. For my crease and brow bone, I'll use a matte eyeshadow. Shimmery eyeshadows just don't work on me.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Maybelline color tattoos. I don't get the hype cuz they dried out in the pots super fast and it's hard to use.

    ReplyDelete
  41. NARS Orgasm blush! After hearing SOOOO much raving about it, I finally visited a city that had a Sephora and bought it. Does nothing for me and way too much shimmer. Couldn't return it because by the time I decided I hated it, we were back home in the middle of nowhere. Expensive mistake! And every time I see people looking for dupes, part of me thinks "Hey, you can have mine." Had the same experience with a MAC lipstick--a cult favorite, I bought it on vacation--now it sits unused.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was so excited about color tattoos. I ran to buy the gold one but it dried super quickly and i had difficulty applying it. I rather use loreal infaillibles; they are much better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Benefit's Erase Paste! It is so dry and creased like crazy! I like the Pixi correction concentrate much better. It's not nearly as dry and the peach tone conceals my dark circles very well!
Maybelline Color Elixers. While I think the color and formula is nice....the smell makes me nauseated. It's like extremley strong old lady floral perfume that doesn't fade as time goes on!
