Swatches: All Six Color Tattoos from the Maybelline Limited Edition Spring 2014 Dare To Go Nude Collection

NOTE: If you're looking for the Dare To Go Nude Collection, click here to take a look at the interactive sightings map (and if you've found this collection in your area, I'd be grateful if you left a marker on the map so that other readers can find it too!).

I was able to find all six of the Color Tattoos in the Maybelline Limited Edition Spring 2014 Dare To Go Nude Collection (click here for pics of the entire collection) at Bed Bath & Beyond a few days ago, and I wanted to get the swatches up for you as quickly as possible.  I know that the seasonal Color Tattoos sometimes sell out the moment they hit the shelf, so let's get to it:

Maybelline Limited Edition Color Tattoos from the Spring 2014 Dare To Go Nude Collection
(retail: $5.79 each at Bed Bath & Beyond, 0.14 oz)

CONFIRMED (2/18/14): Maybelline confirmed to me directly today that all of the Color Tattoos in this collection ARE limited edition (even though they don't say "limited edition" on the labels).

Limited edition? Maybe, maybe not...

Until I hear from Maybelline, I don't know what to tell you other than, just today, reader Lauren left a comment on the sightings map post letting us know that the display at her Bed Bath & Beyond had recently been restocked. Now, I don't know if BBB stores get multiple shipments of certain limited edition collections or if that's a sign that these are new permanent shades, but either way that's good news. That said, I think that if there's anything here that you REALLY want, you might want to grab it when you see it. Just in case.

All swatches applied to bare skin using my fingers:

Left to Right:
80 Pure Nude, 85 Beige-ing Beauty, 90 Nude Compliment, 95 Sleek & Spice, 100 Caramel Cool, 105 Stroke of Midnight

Here's a closer look:

I thought that Beige-ing Beauty was going to be the more opaque and pigmented of the two, but I was WRONG. Pure Nude is much more pigmented and opaque on the skin, while Beige-ing Beauty is quite sheer. Also, Beige-ing Beauty contains sparkle ({Pure Nude does not). Nude Compliment is the warmer of the two taupey-browns in this collection, and it's a winner. Smooth consistency and nice pigmentation.

Sleek & Spice is the cooler of the two taupey-browns, and it's also deeper than Nude Compliment. Just like Nude Compliment, Sleek & Spice has a smooth consistency and excellent pigmentation. Caramel Cool is an orangey, coppery bronze shade that looks a little flat in my photos but it has some nice dimension in real life. Again, great consistency and pigmentation. Lastly we have Stroke of Midnight. This one surprised me because it's actually a matte black, but it has tons of iridescent glitter in it. Here's what the pan looks like after swiping the surface::

Stroke of Midnight, after I swiped the surface...

See all the iridescent glitter? Sadly, the matte base of this shade is very dry and it's a challenging color to apply to the lid. The moment you start to blend, it sheers out and becomes very patchy. I think this one would be best used as a base for powder eyeshadows or maybe as a liner for a smoky eye. I just couldn't get it to look decent on its own when I tried to wear it by itself.

I hope this post helps you figure out which shades might be worth the hunt. My personal favorites are Pure Nude, Nude Compliment, Sleek & Spice and Caramel Cool. But if I were pressed to pick just two, I would go with Nude Compliment and Sleek & Spice. Warm and cool taupey-browns are just so darned versatile--I can see many of you getting a lot of mileage out of both of these shades.

Don't forget to check the sightings map if you're looking for this collection in your area. In the meantime, what do you think of these shades? Any must-haves here?

  2. Oh I hope these are permanent, except maybe that black as it looks really patchy. My wallet really can't handle all the newness.

  3. Nice. I've got my eye on the 4 darker ones.

  4. I was at my local Bed, Bath and Beyond yesterday, and they did not have this collection yet :-( They are the only BB&B in my area that has a cosmetic department. I didn't think to look at the permanent display. I hope these pop up at CVS, etc soon and they're permanent.

  5. I swung by Bed, Bath and Beyond in hopes of finding these. No luck. But I did pick up a smiley face (dish) spongy! LOL

  7. Thanks for the swatches, G. I'm getting them all for sure. Caramel Cool looks pretty unique for a Color Tattoo, it's my favorite of the bunch. :D

  8. I bought the black and mine is very smooth and creamy and applies nicely on the lid. Maybe a different batch?

    1. I am SO HAPPY to hear that!! The reason I was late in getting these swatches up was because I tried several times to get that one to work, but I just couldn't do it. I tried with a brush, my fingers and even a sponge tip applicator. I tried with and without primer. I tried everything! Lol. And it always looked patchy and dry. :(

I'm jealous that yours is creamy and applies nicely! But I'll still keep it because I think it will work as a liner for me and the glitter is fun for an evening look. :)

    2. I thought I would pass on the Pure Nude and black one but seeing your swatches, I think that Pure Nude will also appear in my haul, once they show up in my area. Thanks for the swatches to help me plan for a bigger haul!! ;D

  9. What's the best type of brush to apply these with? I've been using my fingers but the resuls are sloppy.

    1. I have used a small concealer brush and also a regular eyeshadow brush. I would give both a shot to see which works better for you. :)

  10. I was really going to skip these, but I think I could get a lot of use out of Nude Compliment. Thanks for being so quick posting swatches!

  11. I was't going to bother with the Color Tattoos but I see a couple that I really like. G. if you get a chance could you post a pic of an eye look? I am interested on how they read on the eye combined with different colors. Thanks!!! :)

  13. How do Nude Compliment and Sleek ans Spice compare to Bad to the Bronze? They look very similar.

    1. I don't own Bad to the Bronze so I can't tell you how it compares to Sleek & Spice, but here it is swatched next to Nude compliment: http://nouveaucheap.blogspot.com/2014/02/more-swatches-maybelline-limited.html

    2. Bad to the Bronze looked warmer than both of these. They had just put them out at my local CVS 2 days ago and I compared Bad to the Bronze with the two taupe-y brown shades. I prefer cooler shades, but I honestly thought they were so similar for what I do with these (use as bases) that I skipped all of them.

I also compared the two nude shades with Barely Branded and found them both to be too similar (again, for how I use these, as bases) to buy.

    3. I haven't opened Nude Complement yet because I got it in a swap and I'm waiting for the other person to get her package in the mail but I bought Sleek & Spice and Caramel Cool tonight and I swatched Sleek & Spice next to Bad to the Bronze and they are almost the same color, very subtle differences but will probably look the same on the eye. Caramel Cool is very pretty though and if I find another I might have to buy a backup lol.

  15. My BBB had this display but only one pot of Nude Compliment left (which I bought). I'm starting to think someone who works there is a beauty junkie who buys them as soon as they come in ;) I hope they're permanent, or at least that they show up at the drugstores, because I know I would get a lot of use out of Pure Nude.

  18. Love these swatches! At first, I only wanted the Caramel Cool, but now I think I may also want Nude Compliment and Sleek & Spice.

  19. When the L'oreal Le Matte and La Laques came out my Harmon and Bed Bath & Beyond did restock the limited edition display a few times, so I think they may get multiple shipments of some limited edition collections. I hope this helps!

  20. Yay found them today! Picked up nude compliment, sleek, and caramel. At Harmon. AND used coupons so it was a steal :)

  21. I got all 6!!! I plan on using the black for eyeliner and smoky looks, the 2 light ones for various highlighting/inner tear duct, and the others to use by themselves. This is probably the most versatile collection they have had because they all can serve a good purpose. I'm excited about the looks I can make with these!!

  22. Pure Nude looks great!

  23. I agree with the previous commenter.. I compared all them them side by side in store and both the light shades are extremely close to barely branded.. also sleek and spice was really close to bad to the bronze. BTTB was just the slightest bit warmer but not enough for me to justify owning both. I wish they had made them matte.. then they would have been more unique.

  24. I picked up 5 of the 6 colors at a Christmas Tree Shop in the beauty department. If you have one near you, stop in and see what they have. I have always had great luck finding limited edition/hard to find makeup here. I hope they restock as I am still missing be Beige-ing Beauty.
