Beauty Bite: CoverGirl Queen Collection Eyeshadow Quad in Lion Queen

So I finally found a full display of CG Queen Collection products in my area after a couple of years of searching! And I found the display in the place where I least expected it: Burlington Coat Factory. Can you believe it? I didn't even know that certain Burlington Coat Factory stores had extended beauty departments, but the one I went to last week had permanent wall displays of CoverGirl, Maybelline, e.l.f., Sally Hansen, etc., just like at a normal drugstore. They also had limited edition Wet n Wild collections and even Color Club holographic polishes at an amazing price.

So before I even get to this little review, I strongly advise you to check the Burlington Coat Factory stores in your area to see if any of them have an extended beauty department. Trust me, if could very much be worth your while!

CoverGirl Queen Collection Eyeshadow Quad in Lion Qneen
(retail: around $4, 0.19 oz)

I did a little damage at the CoverGirl Queen Collection display, because this was the first time that I was able to see many of these products in person. I will be posting several other reviews in the weeks to come, but I thought I'd start with this eyeshadow quad. So let's take a look...

Without primer:

Over Milani Eyeshadow Primer:

PROS:
  • Nice balance of cool and warm shades in one palette
  • Pigmentation is decent over primer
  • A few of the shadows have a smooth, silky texture
CONS:
  • Availability (it can be challenging to find a full Queen Collection display in certain areas, but you can order online at drugstore.com and other retailers)
  • Very weak pigmentation when worn without primer
  • A few of the shades have a powdery, chalky consistency

THE LAST BITE: I hope that this palette is a fluke, and that some of the other eyeshadows that I purchased from the Queen Collection have better pigmentation. One of the many reasons why I loooove color cosmetics created for Women of Color is that the pigmentation can be amazingly vibrant and rich (hello, Black Radiance blushes!). But sadly, these shadows are very difficult for me to see on my NC20 skintone when worn without primer, so I would imagine that they'd be difficult to see on deeper skintones as well. Over primer, all four shades in this quad did improve, but not dramatically. I love the colors in this quad and I appreciate that there are two warm shades and two cool shades, but I'm afraid that, overall, this one fell flat for me. I'm really bummed about that, considering how difficult it is to find a good, dove-gray matte eyeshadow at the drugstore. I was hoping that this would be the one, but it's just not as pigmented as I hoped it would be.

Please check back in the weeks to come for more CoverGirl Queen Collection reviews (lip colors, eyeliners and more eyeshadows). In the meantime, do you have any favorites from the Queen Collection? I would love to hear your recs!

  1. I saw this display at my Burlington today. I didn't buy anything, though (I wasn't looking for the Color Club holos ;).

  2. I have a few of the Outlast lipsticks and think they are great. They are just like the ones in the regular line, but with a different color range. Since I love reds and I love the CG Outlast lipsticks, the Queen collection allowed me to expand my love of both with buying a few more.

  3. I can vouch for the quad in Desert Bronze, it's beautiful.. and the vivid impact liners in Gilt (a gold/khaki/green) and Amethyst ( a silvery warm purple, that sounds weird but it's the best I can describe it.. a unique pretty color), both smooth gel formula, pigmented, and stay all day on the lash line (have not tried them inside the eye). I have not tried any of the other shadows, there are only three other quads and they did not interest me.. and I'm not one to buy singles, although I've been tempted there are some gorgeous colors, especially the jewel tones like Peacock and Romance. Hopefully you picked a few up and can tell me if they are good.

  4. Bummer that they're so weak; they're such nice shades :( Of all places, the Kroger a few miles from where I live has a large CG Queen collection. I'm actually currently using Lash Fanatic mascara and I like it quite well.

  5. Here in town most of the Meijers carry Black Radiance, but we have one and only one Walgreens that carries CG Queen (and also Iman). I got the only one of those chubby lip crayons that I actually like there, a CG Queen one that I'd tell you the name of if it actually had the name on it. -.- (It's a coralish red and is one of the few reds that I can actually wear as an everyday sort of color.) Unfortunately the failings of this quad are a lot like the failings of some of the regular CG eye quads and trios I have -- they're nice and all, but if I hadn't discovered how useful primer can be, I'd probably find them almost useless, because they're just not very pigmented on their own -- and I'm kind of wary of CG shadows right now.

  7. I bought this same palette about a year ago at Walgreens, I thought the colors looked beautiful. But it was so horribly pigmented ( I could not even get the light purple gray to show up at all). It frustrated me so much that I threw it out. I've tried some of the single eye shadows and they were better.

  8. Black Radiance needs to put out new stuff! I totally agree with you on their pigmentation.

  9. I noticed the other week that CoverGirl has a bunch of the Queen collection products listed in the discontinued product section of their website. It makes me wonder if they will be continuing on with the Queen collection. http://www.covergirl.com/discontinued-products

  10. I've been on the lookout for CG Queen products ever since my favorite Youtuber, Total Makeup Junkie 101, mentioned that she found a perfect match for her skin tone with their foundation. Since she recommends the foundation so highly and seems like she has a similar skin tone to mine, I've been wanting to try it. I've struck out so far on finding CG Queen products, though! Now I know I can skip this eyeshadow quad if I ever do!

  11. They ARE hard to find. Only a few individual department/drugstores in my city carry the line at all.. and those displays are usually pretty empty. I live in a city with a large AA population as well.. I'm betting it's even harder in a less diverse area. I bought the few items I have at drugstore.com when they were having a sale (which they do all the time, they just don't always advertise them, you kind of have to just go and look http://www.drugstore.com/templates/featured/default.asp?catid=159673&sctrx=dps-16&sctrxp1=286157 right now CG is 20% off). I've also noticed if I buy something they will often send me customized offers based on my purchase history. Back then they also had free shipping for a $20 order which they don't have anymore.. now it's $35.. so I don't order from them nearly as much, in fact I haven't placed an order since they changed. Walmart, Target, and Walgreens also have store finder tools so if you choose an item you can see what stores in your area sell them before you go.

  13. Ok you definetely need to try the Vivid Impact eyeliners. I have the black one. From the products I have I would recommend the gloss balms, bronzer, the 4-kit in Brass n' sass, the lipsticks, and the eyeshadow singles in emereald, peacock, down to earth, romantic. I'm still trying to get my hands on the other stuff. Sadly CG Queen has discontinued their lipliners.
