"Hey, do you remember that candy from when we were kids?"
"WHAT candy?"
"You know...it was super popular and we all used it to eat it?"
"What did it look like?"
"Well, it had this wrapper..."
And then you go into describing said candy, only to discover that your friends have NO idea what you're talking about? Well, for me, it's always this candy called Flicks. If I had a dime for every time I've tried to describe Flicks to people my age, and how many times I've received black stares in return, I'd be rich. I always try to describe this candy from my childhood like this:
"OK, it was these little chocolates that came in a toilet-paper-roll type of container. The container was wrapped in blue foil, and the chocolates were larger than M&Ms, sort of like little disks."
NOBODY ever remembers them. Trust me.
Well the other day when I was at CVS, I saw something that made me gasp out loud. Near the registers, there was a FLOOR DISPLAY of Flicks, with the tagline:
"The Original! Just Like When You Were A Kid!"
See, people, I'm NOT losing my mind! These not only existed, but they're back and now being marketed to nostalgia-hungry old people like me!
So of course I bought a tube (in blue, which is the color I remember from being a kid and eating these at drive-in movies with my parents in the late 70s):
Flicks - Original Flavor
(retail: $0.99 each, 0.16 oz)
When I was a kid, these didn't have an inner wrapper. You opened the end of the tube and the chocolates were just rattling around inside. But now, thanks to the tamper-crazy world we live in, Flicks have a sealed inner wrapper:
So the big question: do they taste the same? YES! Exactly. And after doing some research, it's no wonder they taste just like I remember them: they're using the original recipe which dates back to 1904!
I cannot believe I have Flicks in my possession again. DEFINITELY my best purchase this week at CVS.
Do YOU remember Flicks? You can check out their website here.
G, u should totally hoard the chocolates and freeze them out of fear that u may never see them again. I would. :-)
ReplyDeleteHaha! I'm thinking about it :)
DeleteThey look good. I don't remember them and I was a kid in the 70s too...I want to try them now though!
ReplyDeleteAwww, you were? Yay! I wonder if they were regional?
DeleteHmmm. new to me but I totally want to try them! (old but not old enough) ;-)
ReplyDeleteLol!! ;)
DeleteThis literally made me laugh out loud!
ReplyDeleteGlad I could make you smile! :)
DeleteAt first I had no idea what you were talking about... but then I saw the pictures. I do remember these!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have a Cracker Barrel restaurant in your area, but they have an old fashioned country store attached to them... and are a great place to find candies from the past. They even have boxes themed to particular decades.
You do?!? Yay!!!!
DeleteNo Crackle Barrels in San Diego. I don't think they're even on the west coast. :(
oh man i totally remember these. i want some now!!
ReplyDeleteWhoo hoo!! SO glad you remember them!!! :)
DeleteWow, never heard of them til now! I'd like to try them though, haha.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like them if you do!
DeleteI don't remember them but I'm going to try some if I see them!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like them if you find them. :)
DeleteI don't remember these. My mother doesn't either. Maybe they were only in certain regions.
ReplyDeleteSounds like that might be the case! Oh well. :)
DeleteOMG just read their web bio and the recipe was created by Ghiradelli Chocolates!! You've got me sold on these gonna stalk a few of my CVS locations to find them!
ReplyDeleteWow!! I totally missed that! I really hope you can find them! :)
DeleteI don't remember these, either; born and raised in Georgia since 1968. I will have to try them, though. I have a CVS shopping addiction, due to that danged red box. It's like the lottery. Anyway, you might like a book called "Candy Freak," which talks about all the really old candies and what happened to them and why.
ReplyDeleteWow, it sounds like, based on what other commenters have said, that these might have been regional. :(
DeleteAnd yes!! I own Candy Freak! Great book! :)
I had the same deal going but my memory was fir Turkish Taffy!!! I couldn't believe when I found them in 5 Below!!! I bought all flavors and stuck them in the freezer and then cracked them into pieces!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTurkish Taffy sounds familiar! I'll have to google it! :)
DeleteAnd congrats on finding it! That's awesome!!
Not heard of Flicks before but they resemble Hershey's chocolate kisses, don't u think? :)
ReplyDeleteSort of, but they're flatter and a bit wider...and they taste better (to me, at least)! :)
DeleteThere are so many unknown candies out there! I remember when candy paint brushes, whistling lollipops, & such were all the rage.
ReplyDeleteI remember those whistle pops!! :)
DeletePretty sure they had a bird on them & were meant to drive parents mad.
DeleteAround here (southeastern PA), they call these "Wilbur buds." I wonder if they taste like Wilbur buds. They are seriously the most creamy delicious chocolate I've ever had outside of Europe. I'll be on the lookout here because usually you can only buy Wilbur buds somewhat north of where I live (Springfield, PA), and if these taste the same, I'll definitely be buying (or ordering)some soon!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is SO interesting! I hope they're the same if you try them! :)
Deletehaha! I don't remember these, but there are definitely candies out there that bring back childhood memories for me. Like the Whatchamacalit bar. These are still around, though. I wonder if the Flicks will be available at any other stores. We don't have CVS here. If I find them, I will try them for sure!
ReplyDeleteI love whatamacallits! And I hope you can find Flicks somewhere in your area! :)

ReplyDeleteI too used to love these, and when I saw them recently (I think it was a convenience store) I grabbed one out of nostalgia. I think my tube was the green color.
ReplyDeleteOmg, you found them too?? Yay!!!!! So...did they taste like how you remembered them? :)
DeleteThey did taste like I remembered, but I'm used to dark chocolate now, so they tasted kinda "milk" chocolatey. Also, I thought putting them in the wrapper took away from the fun of shaking them out of the tube, didn't you?
DeleteAw, bringin' back memories for G! :D I wasn't even born the first time these were around, but next time I'm in CVS, if I find them, I'll totally give 'em a go. Looks yummy, I like chocolate- so what the heck? Plus you give me good advice on what to buy for makeup, so I'm figuring you'll be spot-on in the candy deparment, too. :D
ReplyDeletehaha Never heard of them but I love how excited you are about them! Makes me want to try them!
ReplyDeleteI most definitely remember them well. I've been ordering them from Hometown Favorites (online)for quite a while. :)
ReplyDeletewow!! i want that.. :)
ReplyDeleteCan't believe there was a chocolate candy that I missed! I'll be on the lookout for them though! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I ever heard of these before. What do they taste like?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Flicks!!!! I actually live about 5 minutes from where they make them :)
ReplyDeleteI love those, if you have a bed, bath, and beyond near you they sell them! :)
ReplyDeleteI remember these, and think of them in a red tube. Grew up in Washington state. No CVS where I live to check them out, though. I just keep waiting for my favorite - the Marathon candy bar to come back.
