My steal of the week (a tip about high value coupons)

I mentioned this in a previous post, but just in case you missed it: last week CVS was printing out high-value Physicians Formula coupons to many members ($7 off any Physicians Formula cosmetic item). My normal inclination is to use coupons like this as soon as humanly possible, but I want to take a minute to remind you (and myself) that sometimes it REALLY PAYS to wait.

Since the expiration date on that coupon was May 15th, I decided to hold on to it so I could investigate exactly which pressed powder I wanted to buy (I knew I wanted a pressed powder because I'm running low, and I've been wearing liquid/cream foundations more often these days and would like to find a Holy Grail pressed powder).

What I SHOULD have done was consulted IHeartCVS and looked ahead a few weeks to see if there was a good upcoming sale on Physicians Formula where I could maximize my $7 coupon. But as luck would have it, THIS week (as I mentioned in the Weekly Drugstore Makeup Sale Post here), CVS is running a fantastic sale:

ALL Physicians Formula cosmetics are $5 off through May 12th

So this is how I got the following item for just $2.49 (before tax):

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Airbrushing Pressed Powder SPF30
(retail: $14.49)

The sale + the coupon = a $14.49 powder for $2.49!

(If I had a $1 off manufacturer's coupon to stack with the CVS store coupon, it obviously would have been an even better deal)

So the moral of this story is, the next time you get a great, high-value coupon at the drugstore, consult IHeartCVS, IHeartRiteAid or IHeartWags and see if there's an awesome sale coming up in a week or two (before your coupon expires). Don't rely on luck, like I did, or you could miss out on something that could save you a lot of money.

PS: A huge thanks to reader Kari for the heads-up that THIS week, CVS is printing out $12 off coupons for Physicians Formula skincare! I checked next week's ad and there doesn't seem to be a good sale to pair with this coupon, but be sure to check the expiration date on your coupon (if you get it) and hopefully something good will come up before that coupon expires!

  2. I saved my coupon as well and have had my eyes on the Mineral Glow Pearls. Luck will have it, I got the (last) "delux" pack- it included both a full-sized Glow Pearl compact AND a deluxe mini compact of Glow Pearl Blush- for $3.23!

I used a brush to take off the top layer which is SUPER shimmery and the stuff underneath is a more tempered glow.

    1. wait, I'm confused. So did it allow you to take 12 dollars off a cosmetic? I'm not sure if the tinted moisturizer is in the skin care line. Thanks!

    2. I would love to know too! I'm going back to CVS today; I'll check if the tinted moisturizer is in the cosmetics section, or the skin care section. I know my CVS has the two sections segregated. I'll let you know!

    3. I used my $15 off skincare on Organic Wear tinted moisturizer a couple weeks back when they had an extrabucks special. It's not part of the official skincare line, but I think it still works since it's a type of moisturizer.

    4. Just got back from CVS. I looked closer at my coupon and it specifically said "not on cosmetics". I went to the Physician's Formula skincare and there were five products, ranging from $19.99 to $21.99. I went to the Physician's Formula makeup aisle and I couldn't even find a tinted moisturizer :(. Bummer. I'm gonna hold off and check iheartcvs to see if anything is coming up. PS, thanks for the thanks in your post! It made me happy as a clam at work today!

  4. I didn't like that powder at all. It felt kind of wet (for lack of a better descriptive word) on my face. Definitely not good for oily skin. Hopefully you have better luck, G!

  5. I used my $12 off skin care coupon to buy the new moisturizer and bout the matchmaker blush and matchmaker lipgloss with $5 off and they had $3 off coupon decals stuck on them so in total I saved $28 dollars. I love the gloss, and the blush I have to wait to try the moisturizer until I finish what I'm currently using. AAHMMAZING!

    1. Yep! It's not a traditional Kabuki, but it's super soft and dense! I'll be sure to post a review in the near future.

    3. Can't wait! You made me love PF Healthy Wear Powder and now it's such a pain to get ahold of it. I'd love to know if this powder compares so I can stop going to Ulta every time I need powder!

  7. I'm really trying to stick to a no-buy for the rest of the month... I think I'm going to have to stop looking at your blog! The boyfriend doesn't understand that sometimes I buy things just because I am getting such a good deal on them....But the collection is taking over my bathroom and I need to pad my savings.

  10. I got the $12 off skincare with both my CVs cards (my parents have one and I have one), and used them both yesterday to get makeup almost free. They didn't even give me any trouble, just scanned the coupons and away I went. I got the jumbo lash mascara, Ph lipgloss, and the age defying liquid foundation and powder and paid maybe $5 out of pocket. I also had a $3 off coupon from last week.

  12. Today I had the $7 and $12 off coupon, with the $1 off coupon. I got the organic wear moisturizer and a mineral wear foundation for free basically. I paid 1.75 for those, a spoiled nail polish, band-aids and two bags of pretzels. Great deal.

  13. I picked up the shimmer strips eyeliner trio for 3 cents today!! The lady who rung me up even said I spent my money well :p Best part I finally got the 12 off coupon and a 5 ebc!

  14. I don't understand how some people are getting this special coupon from the CVS machine? I buy everything, tons of cosmetics, skincare from CVS, have had an extra bucks card since they first came out and I didn't get a PF coupon last week or this week! How do you get them??

    1. I felt the same way until I scored the $12 coupon. I never got any of the good coupons other people talked about and I spend a TON of money on cosmetics and skincare at CVS. I'm guessing it's either luck of the draw, or maybe the region that you're in? Or the certain store? I have no idea. But I would honestly try to go to CVS every day and scan your card to see if you get it!

  15. I'm so glad I waited on the coupon too. I got three different types of PF concealer to try out for a mere $3 after the sale and coupons. I'd love to hear what you think of the powder!!

I got the skincare coupon tonight and will probably try the eye cream. I definitely need to research that one. They recently did a similar promo and I got the SPF 15 Moisturizer with it for just a few bucks :)

  16. I just went today n got 3 concelear , 1 eyeshadow quad and 1 eyeliner and paid just 1.98... I had a q from the red machine for 3 off physician formula and my manufacture Q's

  17. I got the same powder you did, G except my regular price is a dollar cheaper than yours. So it was $8.49 after the $5 savings then the $7 coupon brought it down to $1.49. Then I had the $3 coupon from a couple weeks ago and got the Shimmer Strips Eyeliner Trio in nude which was $5.49 after the $5 savings so with the $3 coupon it went down to $2.49. PLUS, I had a leftover CVS gift card from a return I made a while back where I had lost the receipt that had $4.73 on it! So basically I got everything for free! :)
