The Wednesday Question

This week's question is one that I hope even the lurkers out there (people who read my blog regularly but never comment) will come out to answer! The more comments the better, right? It gives so many of us great ideas when more people answer these questions, so I hope you'll take a second to leave a response!

If you're currently using a drugstore foundation, which one are you using, and why?

I find that I'm always reaching for Physicians Formula SPF 50 Powder Foundation these days, because it's just so darned easy to apply, it provides excellent coverage and it's got incredible staying power on my super oily skin.  I was able to find a great color match and if I wait for a sale, I can avoid the $15 price tag, which is always a plus.  So what about you? What drugstore foundation are you wearing these days, and why?

  1. I'm using Revlon Photo Ready. I like that it has a pump, and the coverage and finish are nice. Wish the shimmer would disappear, though

  2. I'm using Physician's Formula SPF 50 powder foundation too. Why? Because I read about it here! It's easy to apply and very natural looking.

  3. I've been using and loving L'Oreal True Match Liquid foundation. It provides medium coverage that matches me perfectly! However, with the hot weather around the corner I will be switching to Revlon Colorstay.

  4. I'm using Maybelline Pure Makeup. I think that's what it's called. xD I don't have it next to me at the moment but I think that is the name. It is oil-free and a liquid foundation, and comes in a little blue bottle. I started using it a while ago when I was in desperate need of foundation but was pretty broke. This foundation costs around 5 bucks. I love it now! I've been using it ever since. It's lightweight, a perfect match for my pale-ness, and it blends really nicely!

I am also testing out the True Match Roller foundation now.

  5. Revlon Colorstay; I have very oily skin, so I need the extra staying power. Also, I use so little at a time that I'm nowhere near finishing this bottle. I've had it for six or seven months and I'm not even half done.

  6. Neutrogena Healthy Skin. I was afraid to try it because of the comparisons to sheer glow (I was afraid it's be too dewy) but it's actually very nice. Reminds me a lot of Colorstay in terms of coverage and blending ability but doesn't feel as heavy, and the ingredients list is a lot better for your skin!

  7. I use Olay Definity Color Recapture, it's a treatment with SPF 15 along with sheer, illuminating coverage that is just enough for daytime. I love it, it makes my skin look pretty but not made up at all.

  8. I'm one of your more mature readers, ahem, with very dry skin & redness, scarring etc. I love Cover Girl Simply Ageless. I had to experiment for the best application, but found that my fingers work best. It's easy to apply, provides the full coverage I need but doesn't feel heavy or masklike, and stays put all day. Doesn't settle in fine lines, either.

  9. I'm using Physicians Formula SPF 50 Powder Foundation in Translucent Light with a layer of Meow's Pampered Puss foundation in Snow Lynx on top of it. Physicians formula is nice, but too dark for me. Like 99% of all drugstore foundations are too dark for me, so I can't really wear them. The Physicians formula one I like and works if I do the 2 layers.

  10. Lately, I have been liking Palladio Wet/Dry Foundation or the CG Advanced Radiance Liquid Makeup. I switch around a lot and use mineral foundations sometimes too ie. Meow or Aromaleigh also. Why I can't stick with one thing is beyond me.

  11. Neutrogena Healthy Skin. I love it beacause it looks natural and really diffuses redness and flaws, giving an airbrushed look. It never cakes and has a nice finish. I use it every day! ^-^

  12. I too am a Physicians Formula user. I'm using their new(ish) Illuminating Powder Foundation Duo from their Mineral Wear Talc-Free line. It is quite "glowy" so I top that off with a dusting of their Correcting Powder, also from the talc-free line. I've become so disillusioned with liquid foundations because I just cannot find one that looks and works great on me, so I was SO happy to have found this! I have mild rosacea, and it gives enough coverage to blend the redness from that away, but it still looks like my skin, not a mask. LOVE! :-)

(I also like their Healthy Wear tinted moisturizer, but even the lightest shade is too dark [I'm a MAC NW15 for reference]. Maybe it'll work this summer!)

  13. I alternate between Revlon Colorstay and Maybelline SuperStay Silky. The Maybelline is discontinued, but I've been able to swap for a few bottles. My Big Lots didn't have any. :(

  14. I don't use it always... actually I rarely use it,but I have Revlon Colorstay I decided to buy it since everybody was talking about it, I still can give a verdict, but I kinda like it, what I don't like is the smell of it.

  15. I'm switching between Revlon ColorStay and Maybelline De=ream Liquid mousse

  16. Thanks, Recessionista, for all the great product reviews and money saving suggestions!

I'll come out of lurker mode to answer this question. A few months ago, when it seemed that all the drugstores were having 50-75% clearance on make-up, I bought a bunch of foundations for ridiculously low prices.

So far, the one I've most consistently been complimented on is Maybelline's Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation. Once, when I was wearing it along with MUFE HD Powder on top, a woman walked up to me and said my skin looked like porcelain (and my skin really doesn't look great bare naked).

I had received the MUFE powder as a gift from Sephora for accumulating points on their Beauty Insider Card, so it was better than cheap, it was free, so I feel that it qualifies to be mentioned on NC. :)

  17. Almay Nearly Naked liquid foundation. This is a light coverage foundation which I like because I am of the belief that foundation should veil not mask the skin. It's made for normal skin, but I find it works well for my slightly oily skin. The thing I love most about it is the blendability. Super easy to apply with the fingertips.

  18. I am currently switching between Almay Pure Blends and Revlon Photoready, depending on the day.

  19. Ditto on the True Match; it's the only one I've been able to find that matches me perfectly! I do wish my color, W8, came in a blendable compact or roller. I prefer creams to liquid foundation, us dark girls need love too!

  20. I'm using Maybelline 24hr wear (the one with the white lid) and i love it! Creamy, smooth, great coverage, and blends easily.

  21. i am a totally broken record on this score: i am hopelessly devoted to L'Oreal's TrueMatch liquid foundation (and the powder and concealer and blush from that line is all pretty sweet too!) i get so many compliments on my skin*- it always looks natural- it has SPF too- and it's very blendable, medium coverage.

*which may also have to do with all the dark chocolate i apply internally

  22. Hello (former) lurkers!!! I'm THRILLED that you have come out to play with us today!! Yay!! Hopefully this means we might see you around even more in the future. :)

Thank you all for such amazing, and thoughtful responses. I am having so much fun reading through your comments and jotting down little notes to myself. I have plenty of new foundations to try out when my "to test" pile gets a little thinner. Thanks so much for the great recs! xo

  23. I use Rimmel True Matte. I have oily skin in my t-zone and it stays put all day and as long as I have a powder on top, I don't get too oily. Plus it looks natural on me. I think I will try the Revlon Photoready next..

  24. I've been using Revlon Colorstay Active for a couple years now. I LOVE it! It's kind of sheer, very natural looking, has SPF 25 and lasts all day. Plus the ivory is the perfect shade for me. I just can't say enough about it!

  25. Count me in as another fan of Physician's Formula SPF 50 Powder Foundation, thanks to your review, and its ease of application :-)

I also top it off with their new Correcting Powder -- loooove this stuff! -- and it makes my skin look incredible!

  26. well i just dab concealer where i need it and then set with maybelline dream matte powder, but i was using maybelline instant age rewind eraser treatment makeup, but that my the sides of my nose itchy i think, well thats what im blaming it on anyway, and then for special occasions i have the revlon photoready

  27. I just bought Loreal True Match because of the recommendations here and I am so glad I did. It's blendable like my Almay Nearly Naked but better for those days when I want more coverage. Thanks ladies!

  28. Yay!! More wonderful responses! Thanks so much ladies!! (And hi, Lipstick Chick! So wonderful to see you around here again! I missed you, girlie!).

oldfashioned: I LOVED your comment!! I just love it when someone here introduces me to a product that turns out to better than the thing I'm currently using. I'm so happy this happened to you! :D

  29. Right now I'm using Wet'n'Wild sheer foundation. I tried the Hard Candy tinted moisturizer but it really was drying. The color wasn't right either...I need something sheerish.

    Loving these recommendations!

  30. i use boots tinted moisturizer, does that count? i also have a bottle of almay barely there (is that what it's called) that i bought on clearance and have been using for six years (yeah, i probably use foundation about once a week, and even then not all over my face), but since it's running out and discontinued i picked up the almay smart choice (is that what it's called? the one with the magic color bead thingies), which i don't think is nearly as good as the former. the boots TM is nice since i prefer sheer, light coverage, just enough to even out the slight redness around my nose and chin and shadows under my eyes.
