Brow powder as eyeshadow?

OK, here's a switch! I know that a lot of us use eyeshadow as brow powder (for years when I was a redhead I used MAC Haux on my brows and it was THE perfect shade) but using brow powder as eyeshadow? I just don't know...

I spotted this idea in the current edition of Ladies' Home Journal (I somehow got a free subscription to this magazine--don't ask me how, but it arrives in my mailbox every month). There is an article on budget beauty in this month's LHJ and although I had seen a lot of the tips before, this one struck me as unusual. BUT, I like the idea behind it. The author of the article says that since brow powders are designed to be sweat-proof, the staying power in fantastic. Now who doesn't like a good neutral brown matte eyeshadow with fantastic staying power?

The article suggests Ardell Brow Defining Powder (around $4 at most drugstores), which comes in two shades:

I spotted these on the Walgreens website for $4.79 and I know that you can find them at Rite-Aid and most other drugstores as well. Also, I know that Milani, Wet n Wild and Maybelline also have inexpensive brow powders.

I've got to say, the more I think about this, the more intrigued I am. Talk about the perfect safe-for-work color that might just have the best staying power ever! I think I've got to give it a try and report back.

In the meantime, have any of you used brow powder as eyeshadow? I'd love to hear about your experiences.

  1. I've actually used brow powder before as eyeshadow it applies just like regular eyeshadow.

I bought the same Ardell brow powder at Walmart for under 3 dollars I think it was like 2.67

  2. I've been using my Bare Escentuals brow powder as eyeliner ever since I got the starter pack. I love it. Not only does it have great staying power, it can look polished OR smoky with very little effort (as a result, I can look put together in about 60 seconds).

  5. For the loooongest time I used eyeshadow as brow powder too (until I found the perfect match with bareMinerals brow powder in Brunette), but I haven't tried the reverse yet! I will now ;) Thanks for those suggestions!

  6. Hey CD! Wow, since you have actually used the Ardell as eyeshadow, would you mind telling us your thoughts? Was the staying power a lot better than the average eyeshadow? Thanks!

Hey yogagrrl! Wow, brow powder as liner? I love it! I will definitely have to try this too! Thanks sweetie. :)

Hey Arezu! You got it! I'll report back as soon as I try it. :)

Hey Becky! I know--it doesn't seem like it would do any harm at all because it's already a product intended for the eye area. I'm all over it! I'll keep you posted. :)

Hey Amber! I would love to know what you think if you give this idea a whirl! xo

  7. i don't see why brow powder wouldn't work as shadow (as i suspect it is e/s and companies are just packaging it differently). however, i would judge it like a shadow...does it blend well and i'm assuming like a lot of brow products, a lot of the brow powders are cool toned with grays and taupes.. not always my fave for e/s... just my preference.

  8. Hey yummy411! I totally agree. It seems like it would work just fine, but I too am curious about how it would blend. And you're right about the colors--they do generally tend to be cool and taupey. But that's ok for me since those colors generally work for me. :) I'll definitely have to give it a shot and report back. :)

  9. Actually, I have. I have the Milani brow powders (the one that comes in a set of two brow powders, one highlight shadow, a mini sponge tip applicator, a mini brow brush, a mini tweezer, and a mini mirror). I used the highlighter shade all over my lid, then one of the brow powders on my crease, and it works beautifully! Perfect everyday look! And the staying power is indeed fantastic! ^_^
