The Wednesday Question

It's time again for The Wednesday Question!

What's your favorite drugstore eyeliner?

Have you got a favorite drugstore brand that works just as well (if not better) than high-end products? Do you own a great drugstore gel liner, liquid liner, pencil liner or maybe even a drugstore eyeshadow that you like to convert into a liner? I'd love to know what you're using. And don't forget to tell us the shade, too!

  1. Love Revlon Colorstay eyeliner in Black/Brown. It goes on so smooth and lasts all day.

  2. Styli-Style Line & Seal Twist Carbon Black or Black Brown, the beeeest and most smudge proof eyeliner i've ever used. (found in rite-aid for about $5-$7)

  3. No surprise, I'm a Prestige girl, love the both the emphasis and color of Fearless Teal on lightish blue eyes. Stays forever, even on the bottom my top lid all day!

  4. Laurie, kelligonzo and Suz! You each mentioned my very favorite drugstore liners! Seriously, my top three of all time are ColorStay, Styli-Style Line & Seal Twist and Prestige! We are eyeliner soul sisters. :)

  5. For liquids, Prestige is the bomb. I used to have their black liquid liner but the store was out of stock last time i checked, so i bought their bronze liner, which i LURVE. i'm now using maybelline's black liquid liner (nonwaterproof) and it's ok. not as black.

For pencils, Rimmel is good but smudgy. I use Wet'N'Wild pencils in basic white and basic black a lot. Have a few automatic liners kicking around- Milani or some such. Less smudgy than the Rimmel, but now-intensity colours. They're darker/duller than the packaging.

Adore L'Oreal HiP Colour Truth gel liner (in the pot). The brown looks so fab on me and it NEVER. BUDGES.

Think that is all...are you looking for new ones or just taking a pulse? What's your fave?

  6. clarification- the Prestige liner is almost gold. it's a very bright metallic, not a brown.

  7. I loooove my Covergirl Line Exact liquid eyeliner. It's cheap, portable, last forever, and easy to apply due to a felt tip applicator. I have yet to find a liquid eyeliner that I love just as much.

  8. L'Oreal HiP Colour Truth gel liner in the purple shade is my only drugstore liner. It works well for me.

  9. Ohhh, girl, this is my topic, yo. I apologize in advance for the longness of this comment.

I am a self-proclaimed eyeliner klutz. I have never in my life worn eyeliner until a couple months ago, when I started this whole makeup online community journey, and I saw many pictures and I loved how pretty ladies looked with their gorgeous eyeliner, and I said to myself I am going to master eyeliner if it kills me! Hehe. Little did I know what an undertaking this would be!

After, like, 5 different products and many many practice sessions, I think I have like a 25% understanding and success rate of eyeliner application. :-P Well, maybe a little more than that.

I'll tell you about my fav first. Wet'n'Wild creme eyeliner in the little pot + Sonia Kashuk bent eyeliner brush from Target. I have had the most success with this combination. It allows me to draw straight, thin lines that I can make thicker if I wish. The brush is THE AWESOME. The angle and fine point just makes drawing so much easier. The liner is the bomb! It stays put. I haven't tried it on my waterline yet, but I've put it right under the lower lash line and it didn't budge!

As for pencils, which I do use because it's quicker than the brush and creme routine, I like Prestige Waterproof and L'Oreal HiP liquid pencil. The HiP isn't as good on the waterline as Prestige is. They are both creamy and easy to draw with. They both stay put on upper lash line. HiP is more expensive, I'll probably rebuy Prestige instead of it.

I did try Almay's liquid eyeliner, 'cause you recommended it, but I guess I'm too much of a klutz to use that stuff. I've tried and tried but I always end up looking like a blind man drew my liner on. And it's not very forgiving, to fix errors you basically have to scrub with makeup remover. It is a great formula if you can work with it, but I don't think I can. :( I tend to do okay on the inner half of the lid, but when I get to the outer is when I start having problems.

Hey, do you pull your eyelid taut to do eyeliner? I just don't like doing that. It doesn't hurt or anything, but I just feel like I'm wrinkling the heck out of my eyes, not that they need any help in that department! So through all my practice I just keep my eye relaxed.

Have you done an eyeliner tut/post yet and I missed it? I think you draw awesome liner, it'd be nice to see a step by step of how you do it. But I understand you're busy! :-)

This was an excellent Wednesday question!

    Okay, now I'm done. :-P

  10. The drugstores here carry the Gosh line and I love their liners! I forget the shade name but my favourite is the blackish brown with gold sparkle... pretty pretty and supposedly a dupe for a liner by mac called Buried Treasure. I've heard really good things about Prestige liners and would like to try those sometime soon, too.

  11. Ok I love the Jordana automatic eyeliner pencils, the NYC waterproof eyeliner pencils, and L'Oreal Lineur Intense liquid liner. I also think my WnW purple gel liner is ok - I can't use an angled brush with it though! It skips =( if I think of anything else, I'll add to this =)

  12. NO questions about it, Styli-Style Line & Seal 24. They have gorgeous colors, they're easy on the price, and they last FOREVER. Especially my lower lash line. I also really like the Prestige Total Intensity liners, AND the Jane Gel liners- I use the brown one almost everyday. OH- and the Sonia Kashuk gel liner in black is my favorite black liner to use.....um, I like liners ;D

  13. I love the prestige glittery liquid liner as well...I have one in brown. Their other liquid liners are pretty good as well. (I have 4 of their pencil ones, the color doesn't go on my lid at all...I don't even have oily/mature eyes.)

  14. For me, my favorite liquid eyeliners are either Mary Kate & Ashley (found at Walmart), or LA Splash, which I get at Ulta. My favorite gel eyeliners are the Loreal HIP and my favorite pencils are either the new Loreal HIP pencils or prestige!

  15. I am surprisingly, totally in love with Wet n Wild Megaliner (the liquid liner) in black. I haven't tried the waterproof formula, but the regular one stays on all day and has the tiniest, most precise brush applicator. I love it. I'm terrible at applying eyeliner but with this one it's really easy, even for me! :] Plus it costs under $2 most places.

  16. Always the thing that would get mess up the easiest! I love the Revlon Colorstay ones but they smudge sometimes on me. I think during crazy heat or stress or something my lid gets crazy oily! But nomrally 95% of the time, it really stays!

That's pretty much it. Haven't really branched out b/c I am pretty satisfied w/ the Revlon ones :D

  17. WOW, ladies! I seriously am floored by all these wonderful and helpful comments! I have a long list of new goodies to try and I also got some confirmation that my beloved ColorStay, Styli-Style and Prestige liners rock many of your worlds and not just my own. :)

Just so you know, I'm really taking what you ladies have to say seriously, and I'll take your recs and purchase some of them to review here on my blog. For instance, I am currently testing the Maybelline concealers that were mentioned a few times on last week's Wednesday Question about drugstore concealers. I'll review those this week and hopefully, little by little, we'll all be able to find our holy grail drugstore products and also continue to share new products with each other.

Thanks a million for all of these responses--and femputer! I'm sorry that Almay didn't work for you. I feel personally responsible! lol. :( I'm not a tutorial blog, but thank you for asking--I am so honored that you'd even want to see an eyeliner tutorial from me! If I had a decent camera I might put one up, but I don't. BUT, I will mention some application techniques on my next eyeliner review. :) If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me: nouveaucheap@gmail.com. Oh! And remember: If you're applying liquid liner, start at the middle of your eye and work out, then go back and do the inner part of the eye. You will rarely succeed in drawing a clean, straight line if you start on the inner part and try to sweet the line all the way across your lid in one motion. So just start in the middle, work the line outward and then go back and do the inner part of the lid and join that line up with the middle. Hope that helps! :)

  18. late to the game, but I love revlon colorstay's pencil liner in vixen; it lasts forever on my lid and a little longer than average on my waterline. I also love mark.'s eyeliner in jet. It doesn't do well on the waterline, but it is perfect for the smudgey days. I am still deciding on L'oreal HiP's cream liner. It is okay, a little drier than I am used to, but it gets the job done. I have the WnW cream liner to try out.

  19. Ah, don't feel bad! I've been trying lots of new things recently, it's all been a learning experience. I think I may just dig the Almay back out and try that starting in the middle thing you mentioned. Practice makes perfect, right? I can't be the only chick who sits at home late on Friday nights practicing putting makeup on and then running to the bathroom to wash it off every five minutes...am I??? LOL! ;)

  20. femputer- no you're not, ducky. and practice will get you there. that's what i did- though my problem was getting the wings even (i love winged liner). i could do the lining bit but everytime i flicked the tip up i couldn't do it the same on the other side....so i would redo the tips until i looked positively Egyptian.

  21. beautifulmonday--
Oh good, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one that does that. LOL!

I LOVE winged eyeliner! It looks so classy. I have trouble getting both my eyes to look the same, too! I even have trouble making eyeshadow look the same on both eyes. I'm starting to think my eyes aren't symmetrical, that in fact they're very differently shaped and that makes eyeshadow look different on each one even though my technique is the same. I wonder if this is a problem for a lot of gals?? EOTD pics that many bloggers do always look absolutely perfect...*sigh* Ah well. I feel a practice session coming on this weekend! As much as I love to practice, I kinda wish it weren't so hard on my skin, washing things off repeatedly. I'm very dry. :(

    ReplyDelete
  22. femputer- my theory is that i am SO overwhelmingly right-sided that my right hand is most effective on my left eye. left always ends up looking better than the right but it's very subtle. nobody has truly symmetrical eyes. :)

and for example when applying mascara....you know how most mascara brushes are wider as they extend lengthwise? well, the thick part of the brush hits my inner eye perfectly on the left side....but i can't flip the brush around when doing the right side, so only the thin part catches the lashes of my inner eye.

so that probably made 0 sense....but anyways, nope you're not alone. i have heard that using lines of Scotch tape or holding a credit card up to the edges of the eye can help with winged tips. i prefer to work freehand but maybe those will help ya!

    ReplyDelete
  23. T--thanks for joining the discussion! I think I own one of those L'Oreal liners but I haven't used it in quite a while. I need to revisit that one. Glad you like the ColorStays too! xo

femputer and beautifulmonday! I love the conversation you two are having about liquid liner application. :) I have to say that I can relate to the whole left-hand vs right-hand thing on so many levels. I'm a lefty and applying liner, eyeshadow and mascara is much easier for me on my LEFT eye. I can't seem to get the same coverage of mascara on my right eye no matter how hard I try. So it's good to know that you guys have similar issues as well! And you both are right--practice definitely makes perfect. I can't stress that enough.

Also, regarding the winged eyeliner issue, I saw a tip on QVC a while back (can't remember which MUA or line I was watching) but it totally makes sense. When you're applying your liner to the outside edge of your eye, pay attention to the natural curve of your eye, and think of the liner as an extension of this curve. Everyone's eyes curve up a little bit at the outside corner, so literally just make your liner an extension of this natural line and you can't go wrong. Of course as you become better at doing this you can go all crazy and make the tick go up for that cute retro look, but if you're just starting out, following the natural line of your eye is the easiest and safest way to go. xo

  24. Recessionista -- I'm a lefty too! I always put makeup on my left eye first, and it always seems to look stronger and better than my right. Also, when I remove my makeup, I always take it off the left eye first, and as a consequence I think I rub the left eye a little more, because the lashes are sparser on that side. :( I gotta remember to change that up.

Oh, I don't think I've given up on the Almay yet! I had a little practice session last night, trying what you said, starting in the middle and then going back for the inner. It went great! It wasn't perfect, but if you'd seen my results before you'd know it was a great improvement! :-D

  25. This is a week too late, but mine is Wet 'n Wild's H2O Proof eyeliner. It doesn't quite stay on me all day long and sometimes it takes a little rubbing (because makeup removers don't always work) to get it off, but I like the hard, precise tip and the price tag!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wet `n Wild Creme eyeliner, it's so good for $4!
