Review: Prestige Skin Loving Minerals Shimmering Trios Mineral Eyeshadow Dust

My fellow beauty blogger and all-around awesome pal, Amber from BeautyJunkiesUnite, told me to "get us something good" with the money I received when I returned that CoverGirl Eyelights Eyeliner I reviewed a few days ago. Well, Amber, I did my best the other day at CVS and here's what I got.

Prestige Skin Loving Minerals Shimmering Trios Mineral Eyeshadow Dust (retail: $11.99) is one of a long list of new Prestige products that I've purchased in the past few months (just do a search on this blog for "Prestige" and you will see the others).

I've got to say that every time a new Prestige product catches my eye, I secretly wonder if it will be the product to finally let me down. Well...I've yet to be let down and this one's no exception.

The Shimmering Trios comes in a container with three generously-sized compartments full of loose shadows. I picked up "Rose Crystal" so let's take a look at some pics:

As you can see, when you remove the lid there are three sections and each section has its own little pull-tab that's very easy to open and close (when you close one you can hear a little "snap" so you'll know it's shut).

All of the colors are (obviously) shimmery and in this trio you get a peachy-white shimmer, a light golden taupe and a deep maroon-berry. I love how you can dip your brush into each compartment to get an individual color, or you can mix any of the colors together right there on the container. So convenient!

Before I get into the review, let me show you the other Shimmering Trios that are available. This pic was taken at CVS and the Shimmering Trios section is located at the very bottom of the permanent Prestige display:

It took everything in me not to purchase the warm neutral trio ("Luster", second slot on the left) and of course I'm wondering what the cool neutral trio looks like (as you can see, the slot for "Jasper" is empty because they're sold out!). But anyway, I forced myself to not buy the neutrals OR "Emerald" because lord knows I own enough neutral and green eyeshadows, so that's how I ended up with "Rose Crystal".

Back to the review: I've got to say that I love how these eyeshadow dusts are...well...dust. They're super fine and sheer. But don't let that fool you--these eyeshadows pack a punch on the shimmer. Actually, I would say they're more sparkly than shimmery, and although the colors are sheer, they do have good pigmentation. I absolutely looooove the look of a sheer, sparkly eyeshadow so I'm pretty much in love with this product.

The colors go on smoothly but beware: You will get some fallout. It's just unavoidable when you're working with superfine, sheer, sparkly loose powders. But if you're patient and careful, it's all worth while. The colors are so pretty and they blend very easily. Here are some swatches (with flash and without):

The first two pics were swatched dry.

These pics were swatched wet.
I love how you get a foil effect when you apply these wet.

And here are some pics of me wearing all three colors:

I applied the lightest shade from lashline to brow, then I put the medium shade on my crease and the darkest shade on the outside corner and also to line. I didn't add any water to these shadows because I was going for the sheer look.

I didn't use an eyeshadow primer and it took 5 hours before I noticed some faint creasing. Not bad! I would imagine that using a primer would keep things in place all day.

Have you tried these Shimmering Trios? Do you plan to purchase any? I'd love to know your thoughts.

  3. Hi there!
I saw these about 2 months ago and purchased Emerald just a week back. I love the colors and shimmer as well. On me the pigment is sheer and morphs into a nice accent which enhances my eyes while avoiding the "Makeup!" look. I've never thought of applying it wet - tips/how tos? wet the brush first and dip? would love your input.
I also love the value - $11.99 for 3 different colors. Took pics to send (but got distracted)comparing size with that of HIP's loose pigment. Just 1 color = 2x as much as the HIP! Granted they're less of a sheer color, but still. Especially if the color changes so dramatically when wet! Yay! thanks for reviewing these. Am now encouraged to purchase the Rose Crystal.

  6. Hey Suz! Glad you like these too. I really want that Emerald collection. lol. As for how to apply these wet, let me explain. First you need a mixing medium. Some people use plain ol' water, some use a few drops of Visine, some use a mixture of water and glycerin (1 part glycerin to 3 parts water), and some use a professional mixing medium. If you use water (like I did for these pics) you should dip your brush in the pigment first and then swirl your brush in the cap of the container, depositing the pigment into the cap. Then run your brush under the tap for a quick second, tap off the excess water and then dip your brush into the cap and mix the dry pigment around with the water that's still on your brush. You'll know when it's the right consistency. You can keep adding more pigment or more water until it feels right, and then just apply it on your lids like you would a cream eyeshadow. The benefit of using a mixing medium as opposed to water is that the staying power with water isn't as good as a medium. Hope that helps! :)

  7. Hey Kitty! Yes, Prestige does do BOGO sales, however I've only seen them at Rite-Aid. Sometimes it's BOGO free, other times it's BOGO 50% off. Hope that helps! :)

Hey Thiamere! Thanks so much! I hope you can find them in your area! :)

  10. I also bought the Rose Crystal trio and realized a little goes a long way. It's my first time with loose eye shadow and it was tricky. I dabbed too much, didn't tap the brush and it fell all over my cheek. The dark color is intense and the highlight sparkles like fairy dust. Your blog is dead on about how to apply it. This is my first time with Prestige cosmetics and I like this so much I'm going to try the mineral foundation and cheek powder.

  11. Hi Anon! Oh believe me, my first time with a loose shadow was a total disaster, but you quickly get the hang of it, right? You'll be a pro in no time! :)

I am thrilled that you like this product and thank you so much for the kind words about my review. I would absolutely love to know what you think of Prestige's mineral foundation and cheek powder (they are both on my to-buy list!). Thanks!! :)
