The Lipstick League - Week of 10.24.16

The Lipstick League Question of the Week

What is the most you have paid for a mascara (and was it worth it)?

G's answer: I'm a drugstore mascara girl for life, so that's hard to answer. This past May I did buy this Diorshow Mascara + Primer Set ($27.50) when Belk was running one of their $10 off $20 sales. So that brought the set down to $17.50, which I guess isn't obscenely expensive given the price of high-end mascaras these days. Anyway, it didn't work that well for me. I loved the primer, but the mascara itself was too clumpy and the brush was too big for my tastes. It's weird because I actually prefer a bit of clumpage to my mascaras since I have tiny lashes, but I just couldn't get this one to work for me. I'm thinking it was a combination of the formula and the brush--I just couldn't seem to control it during application.

The Lipstick League Links of the Week

EauMG - I can’t travel without shopping for beauty products. I went to Mexico and here’s my haul: mamey mascara, orange blossom colognes and more!

Gouldylox - My best of beauty November list is live and you'll never believe what's missing... (hint, the reviews aren't so hot on most of the them, anyway.)

My Beauty Bunny - Tired of the matte lip trend? Check out these super yummy NARS Velvet Lip Glides.

Nouveau Cheap - The Fall 2016 Sephora VIB Sale is coming (very) soon. Not sure where to start? Need some tips about how to maximize your savings? Here you go!

Olive & Ivy - There have been very mixed reviews on the Tarte Pretty Paintbox Collector’s Makeup Case, so of course I had to try it out for myself! Was it a hit or miss?

Phyrra - Makeup Regrets? We all have them. Find out about my latest Disappointing Beauty Products I Regret Buying!

Prime Beauty - is trippin' over the Marc Jacobs Object of Desire Face and Eye Palette! The packaging can double as a clutch!

we heart this - Everyone knows Urban Decay is the gold standard for sparkle. Check out the product that has upped their shimmer game even more.

Beautygeeks - The more Janine learns about psoriatic arthritis, the more her heart breaks for everyone who struggles with it every day. Early detection is key, but most people don’t even know that psoriasis and arthritis are linked, let alone that they’re at risk.

Blushing Noir - Holiday gift giving can be more stressful than it needs to be. In a new series I’ll be sharing a few gift ideas that will help you shop a lot more easily. First up; Shopping for the Planner Girl!

Clumps of Mascara - Bring in the holiday collections! I don’t have my eyes on many but I am currently swooning over ZOYA’s Enchanted Holiday collection.

(Wondering what the Lipstick League is? Find out here.)

EauMG is Currently Craving: N°5 L’EAU. Change can be good. And this new perfume is the perfect example of this. This update is a sheerer version but hasn’t lost any of that velvetiness that I associate with classic N°5.

  1. My answer is the same as yours. I have not even opened it yet. I've been using a couple of the primer samples( from Nordstrom) and I love the primer. I hope I love the mascara.

  2. I spent $32 on the Le Volume mascara by Chanel. Totally not worth it in my opinion. I am forever a Maybelline Mascara girl!

  3. My HG high end is Better Than Sex, so $23? HG drugstore mascaras are Maybelline's Lash Discovery and Volum Lash Express (yellow tube/purple writing). Both are around $10 and I use them together. Similar pricing either way.

  4. I bought Diorshow and wasn't impressed. I stick to drugstores now, though I have a sample of Perversion by UD that I love but don't think I will buy since DS mascaras are so good.

  5. Same here, G. Purchased the Dior mascara with primer for $10 off thinking it would be the end all be all of mascaras. Wrong! Didn't really do much for me. I was kind of shocked because, c'mon it's Dior, right? It's a shame though. I still use it but I'm just glad I didn't pay full price for it.

  6. Definicils (Hi Definicils with the teeth comb instead of a brush) a few years ago when it was $24. It became my favorite but I only ever bought it one more time before I realized some drugstore wands also have teeth. Thankfully it was discontinued so I was never tempted again

  7. try adding a few drops of visine in it,,,I almost tossed out a new tarte mascara because it was too clumpy,,, a few drops of visine and now it is perfect!!!

  8. Hate to say it, but mascara is something you just have to try for yourself because the same stuff works differently on different eyelashes. I too have tried expensive and cheap ones and I find the differences to be negligible between the two. That is to say, the good drug store stuff that works well for you is going to be practically as good as the expensive stuff. I personally prefer silicone over fiber wands and think Loreal Voluminous Butterfly and Covergirl Bloom are best currently sitting on drug store shelves (though I have not tried the Loreal Feline line yet, that's supposed to be good too).

  9. Well...I purchased the Tom Ford mascara in the waterproof version and I must say I love it!!! I used it way longer than I should have. I felt I needed to as paid $33.00 at the Estée Lauder outlet. Will I buy it again? Only if I can get another coupon from them to bring it down to less than $33.00, regular price is $45.00. To be honest a lot of drugstore mascaras dont work well for me. And that is ok...not everything works for everyone. I am currently using an UD Perversion sample and I love it!!! Now that I am thinking I have so many mascara samples I don't need to buy any no time soon. Also I purchased the Dior primer during the last Sephora sale and it is the best primer I have ever used! I didn't really use it under mascara...it was way to dramatic for my taste. But as an overnight primer...two thumbs up. I have that on my list to purchase this Friday!!!

  10. I think the most I've ever paid is about $10 for some drugstore brand and I always look for a sale if I'm going to spend more than $5. Since mascara is ideally supposed to be tossed in three to six months, I don't want to shell out big bucks for it. But I've tried a few higher-end varieties through deluxe samples or it was included with a purchase. There was one high-end brand that gave me nice, long lashes, but it wasn't amazing enough to merit spending something like $27 on a tube of it.

  11. I only buy drugstore mascara. I only wear mascara every four months or so (winter holidays, spring birthday, and fall anniversary.) I maybe use a mascara a couple of times, and then it sits there until it's time to throw it out. I can't imagine spending $20+ on something I only use once or twice.

  12. My HG mascara is Benefit's Roller Lash, which I know some people hate, so that just speaks to how personal mascara can be :) That is also the most expensive mascara that I've tried (I think it's around $24). I usually stock up when I find it on sale (when Ulta has 20% off prestige deals, or HSN). There are some drugstore mascaras that I will always love, but with Roller Lash, I don't have to layer mascaras or use a primer (the Loreal Double Extend gives me the same effect), so it's easier when I'm running late (which is almost always :))
