Since we're a tight-knit little community here, I occasionally like to ask you about, well, life stuff! It doesn't always have to be about makeup. right? My blog, my rules! This week's question is a fun one that I hope you'll take a moment to answer. I love getting inspiration from you, so I can't wait to see your responses!
What are you watching, reading, and listening to these days?
Here's my response:
Watching:
For current television, I'm obsessed with Better Call Saul and The Walking Dead (that season finale though!). I'm also waiting (impatiently) for the new season of Black Mirror to start on Netflix. For Netflix/Amazon on-demand stuff, I just finished watching the entire run of Gilmore Girls for the very first time (thanks to Kelly of Vampy Varnish, who urged me to give it a try) and I took it HARD when it ended. I literally didn't know what to do with myself and found that no other series on Netflix or Amazon could fill the void. I cannot WAIT for the revival episodes of Gilmore Girls to start airing on Netflix this year (have you seen the new on-set pics? If not, click HERE)! Although I'm so bummed that Sookie won't be a part of the new episodes.
Reading:
I just finished probably my fourth re-read of A Confederacy of Dunces and also Wise Blood (I'm a huge fan of Southern Gothic). But I'm taking a break from Southern Gothic for a bit and I just now started Suite Francaise.
Listening:
I always have Queens of the Stone Age on at some point in the day, and there's always an 80s New Wave mix or two on heavy rotation on my Spotify and Pandora, as well as lots of Yacht Rock and 80s & 90s R&B/Soul. But right now my boyfriend and I are kind of obsessed with the micro-genre called Vaporwave. If you've never heard of it, think 80s tv commercial jingles + elevator music mixed with vintage video game and computer blips, all distorted, twisted, and slowed down a bit. It's totally weird, but I find that it's both depressing and nostalgic (in a good way) at the same time. Not for everyone, but I'm loving it right now. You can check one of the many YouTube mixes HERE (warning: the thumbnail image of 80s artwork is slightly NSFW).
Since the Walking dead is over, I'm watching the newest season of Vikings. I have missed this whole season! Love me some Ragnar!! Listening, Crowder's Neon Steeple, LOVE IT!! and reading, The new rules on Love, Sex and Dating by Andy Stanley.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to get back into Vikings! I watched the first few episodes but then kind of forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder!
DeleteYou are in for a treat! It really gets so much better after the first season
DeleteOooooh. Fun one!
ReplyDelete1. I just started a series called Attack on Titan. It's an anime series which is not my thing AT ALL but a friend who knows that I (also!) love TWD suggested it so I'm giving it a whirl. I also have the entire final season of Downton Abbey to look forward to.
2. Don't laugh, but I'm deep into the Maze Runner series. I love YA (it's like brain candy) and this series is really good. Just fun and easy but not too easy.
3. Listening to lots of Juanes (yum) and 90's folk pop -- also not normally my jam but I'm going to an Ani Difranco concert this Friday for nostalgia's sake so I'm gearing up.
There's absolutely NO shame in YAs! In a past life, I worked for a publishing house in the Bay Area and their YAs were always my fave! :)
DeleteAnd omg I haven't thought of Ani DiFranco in YEARS!!
1. Love me some walking dead (in a a season behind because I don't have cable) Vikings, Dancing with the stars and Fixer upper
ReplyDelete2.Reading Aiming your child for true greatness by dr. Tim Kimmel
3.Listening to Zumba music (always as I'm an instructor) Gwen Stefani,For king and Country and Miranda Lambert radio on Pandora :P
How are you liking DWTS this season? I literally have never missed a season but for some reason I'm having a hard time getting into this one. I'm super bummed that Edyta is already gone, and I just miss Derek so much. :(
DeleteThere are a couple of Netflix or maybe Amazon prime series that you might like. One is called the falls with Gilian Anderson and the other is the killing. There is a British series called Luther that is really really good and Showtime series called Billions that I didn't think I would like that I like a lot. My favs are TWD, Top Chef and Project Runway. And Homeland and The Americans to get my spy fix.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading the last 3 Kay Scarpetta novels that I never made it to when they first came out. I'm anxiously waiting for the next book in the Kick series by Chelsea Caine.
I rarely listen to music in my car because I listen to books on tape and I'm listening to a science fiction book on tape right now called Judas Awakening. But the music I do listen to is the Beatles, Aerosmith, and old U2.
Thank you! I love Luther and I binge watched The Fall like a maniac! Lol! I never got back into The Killing after it moved from AMC to Netflix, but have been meaning to revisit. :)
Delete1. I haven't been watching anything in particular since Scandal and How to get Away with Murder ended. Just random documentaries and movies on Netflix.
ReplyDelete2. I've been reading Fervent by Priscilla Shirer, Pink Lips Empty Hearts by Heather Lindsay, Lady in Waiting, Big Magic.
3. Listening to Newsboys, Jamie Grace, Casting Crowns
I feel like I've watched every single documentary on Netflix due to the fact that my boyfriend is a serious doc fanatic! I love them too, but he REALLY loves them, and his favorites are the really dry, political ones. I'm really into the true crime ones like Making a Murderer, etc, right now. Have you found any good ones lately?
DeleteIn my mind I always thought docs would be boring. I watched the Titanic one yesterday. Nahh to the political ones. Gunna watch the holocaust ones, the twin one. I haven't watched making a murderer yet. Ooo I'd have to go back and see the names. I don't remember :/
DeleteThis is a good one! Here are my answers:
ReplyDelete1. I have a couple of shows. I watch Jane the Virgin, New Girl, The Walking Dead, The Royals (can't wait for the new season), Shahs of Sunset (my guilty pleasure show). I need to catch up on Gotham and Sleepy Hollow.
2. I'm reading makeup-related books and just finished Lisa Eldridge FacePaint. It's great! I don't look at makeup the same anymore. There's so much history that it explains how things are today.
3. I've been listening to Classic Rock like Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rolling Stones. I've been missing my dad lately (going to be 4 years of his passing in May) so listening to his favorite genre makes me feel better.
I'm so sorry about your dad, Lisa. Music is a beautiful thing that helps SO much to keep us connected to those we've lost. I'm so glad listening to his favorites helps make you feel better. Led Zep is always, always good for the soul. *hugs* xoxo
DeleteWhat's Jane the VIrgin about? I hear people talking about it.
DeleteLove all things 80's...think John Hughes movies plus Valley Girl & Fast Times at Ridgemont High & more, New Wave Music (Squeeze, New Order, The Go-Go's, Depeche Mode, INXS, Duran Duran, Elvis Costello, Echo & the Bunnymen, Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs & so on...& on) scary movies like Friday the 13th & A Nightmare on Elm Street & more, and TV Shows such as Remington Steele, Hart to Hart, & The Golden Girls! If you're a James Spader fan and haven't watched The Blacklist yet, give it a shot on Netflix (there are 2 seasons up) & The original Netflix series Daredevil is good too (It's pretty dark tho) Oh yeah, the TV show The Goldbergs is a really a cute show that's all about the 80's!
ReplyDeleteI literally (in the truest sense of the word) could have written your entire comment. Yes, yes, and yes, girl! Everything! All of it x1000!
DeleteAnd do I like James Spader? Are you new here??? Lol!! ;) Pretty in Pink is my all-time favorite of all the John Hughes films, and so much of that is because of Steff. If you haven't watched this yet, you will LOVE it:
https://youtu.be/GCRD7RUd6i4
Yep...that video pretty much sums up James Spader and Pretty in Pink, or as I like to call it...Pretty in Spader or Spader in Pink! If you watch the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with Kim Richards, you should check another Spader flick out called Tuff Turf. If you haven't seen it yet, it's also got a cute Robert Downey Jr in it!
DeleteThis is an 80's playlist after my own heart. Echo and the Bunnymen "The Killing Moon"...just added it to me playlist the other day. Whole soundtracks of every John Hughes movie (as the girl who could have been Molly Ringwald's doppleganger back on the day). Sigh...I miss high school. Class of 1990!
DeleteWatching: I'm always current with The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on The CW. Yes, I'm a total nerd. I'm also completely obsessed with binge watching Prison Break on Netflix. One of the best shows I've ever seen, especially the first two seasons.
ReplyDeleteReading: Nothing right now. I need to rectify that.
Listening: My Amazon Music playlist looks like an ADHD toddler assembled it. Anything from 80's Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, to Sarah McLachlan, to Michael Bublé, to current pop like DNCE and Adele. There are a few movie soundtracks on there too, like Hair spray and Godspell. And even High School Musical. It's totally ridiculous and totally me.
I admit, I LOVE watching cartoons! I'm currently watching the new Powerpuff Girls reboot and Adventure Time. I can't wait for the Steven Universe hiatus to be over! I'm also watching Once Upon a Time and any show that airs on Investigation Discovery. I also enjoy watching the Splat on Teen Nick.
ReplyDeleteI'm not reading any books out of personal enjoyment, only college textbooks. I'm not really listening to a lot of music either.
I just have to mention Bob's Burgers. EVERYONE needs to watch it! It's on Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI am currently watching The Amazing Race and Project Runway All-Stars, currently reading Flight of Dreams by Ariel Lawhon and Death Rays and the Popular Media by William J. Fanning, Jr., and currently listening to "Corrupt" by Karissa Noel and lots of Black Keys.
ReplyDelete1. For new series, love Vinyl! Was watching Downton Abbey from the beginning, in season 5 now. Going to start Mr. Selfridge from the beginning next.
ReplyDelete2. Not reading anything now, no time.
3. Anything Bowie - still can't believe he's gone. Or is he..........
Confederacy of Dunces is one of my favorites! I must reread. I am halfway through a huge (1400 pages plus) novel - A Suitable Boy.
ReplyDeleteTV - Vikings, The Americans, Bates Motel, Project Runway Allstars, Ink Master.
Great question!
ReplyDeleteWatching: Just finished House of Cards (that ending!) and The WAlking Dead too. Love Better Call Saul also. On Netflix I am working on Portlandia and The Last Man on Earth. On Hulu, I started The Path with Aaron Paul.
Reading: Just finished "A Mother's Reckoning" by Sue Klebold about the Columbine tragedy. it was excellent, I highly suggest everyone read it. Currently reading " While the City Slept..." By Eli Sanders about a murder in Seattle. Up next is "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace.
Listening to: I am a headbanger so right now I'm into all things hard rock and heavy metal: Slipknot, A7x, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack and a new (to me) band Baroness. Oh and I can't get enough of Nothing More. Their self-titled album is amazing!
Wow! I'm so far off of what most of you watch!! ;) music wise we are good! Tv size, welllll, The Voice, Survivor project runway All-Stars, Couples therapy,The little couple, Teen mom OG,Teen mom2, Donnie loves Jenny, Wahlburgers. Sadly that's JUST to name a few.. HA My girls & I have a few we love to watch together as well!:) I don't watch them all at once, I watch them while I'm cleaning or when my girls are at school or when and when it's BED TIME!! Books, I'm not much of a reader. Sadly..
ReplyDeleteWatching: I don't watch much TV. I do like Blindspot and Agents of Shield.
ReplyDeleteReading: LOVE to read. My favorite genres are mystery and suspense. Right now, though, I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series.
Music: I think my iPod is permanently attached to me, lol. I love all types of music but my favorite genres are hard rock and heavy metal. Lately I've mostly been listening to Adelita's Way and Killswitch Engage.
TV: Lucifer, Magicians, Outsiders (so good!), and Limitless are my favorite new shows this year.
ReplyDeleteBooks: I'm not actually reading anything right now, a friend passed away suddenly Tuesday and I'm finding it hard to concentrate. The last one I finished was Jim Butcher's "The Aeronaut's Windlass" and it was amazing. But I do have one called "The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster" that sounded good when I ordered it.
Music: right now I'm listening to "comfort" music like Agalloch's "The Mantle" and "The Serpent & The Sphere", Musk Ox, and Off the Beaten Tracks. Not in the mood for the really heavy stuff I usually listen to. If anyone else listens to metal though, Borknagar's new one is amazing, Amon Amarth's disappointing, and Swallow the Sun's is... long and varied ;)
I've been watching "Walking Dead", "Better Call Sal", "Vikings" & "The Last Kingdom" (on Amazon) which has some of the same characters from Vikings but a totally different story line.
ReplyDelete"Empire" just came back so I'm watching that and I can't wait to watch "Outlander" on Saturday & "Fear the Waking Dead" on Sunday! eeekkk (I'm exited...more so for Outlander!)
I'm also just finishing the book "Dragonfly in Amber", which is what season 2 of Outlander is based on.
my gosh, you guys! I think I've found my new family! Class of 1991 here - I was the outcast of the school coming from a small Texas town and I was the only "punk" at the time, lol!
ReplyDeleteWatching: I love my reality shows: Survivor, Amazing Race, my guilty pleasure: Bad Girls Club. Regular series: Better Call Saul!!! (five episodes behind), Almost Royal, Bob's Burgers, The Walking Dead
Reading: Open Source Intelligence Techniques by Michael Bazzell (because in RL I'm an investigator, lol) and Gangster Warlords by Ioan Grillo (for work as well). For pleasure: MAKEUP BLOGS!!!! and sewing blogs :)
