The Wednesday Question (Online Hype Edition)

Have you ever purchased a beauty product based solely on online hype from websites, blogs, YouTube, and/or social media? If so, what did you buy and how did it end up working for you?

  1. Bought the pink mascara with the green cap.
Worst mascara I ever used. Super clumpy, not liquid at all, kind of oily. I returned to using a nyc mascara.

    1. I do not understand the years of popularity that mascara has...I think it sucks too!

      Delete
    2. Add me to the list of ppl who don't get it. I think it was a conspiracy between maybelline and allure magazine.

    3. I have never cared for that mascara, either. I don't understand it's popularity.

    4. Thank goodness I'm not the only one! That stuff is the pits.

    5. Yesssss, worst mascara ever.
They must have an amazing marketing team.

  2. I used KathleenLights code to buys a set of Ofra brushes(white bristles green handles)...craptastic. she didn't hype the brushes but I bought them along with some lippies. ABH liquid lipsticks...HORRIBLE. LOL

Becca Highlighters...worked so well for my dark skin. Love them.

    1. When Youtuber's leave shopping code's for their viewers, it usually means that they're getting paid for the promo, so you should always take those type of suggestions with a grain of salt.

  3. I bought a bunch of ColourPop items because of all of the hype surrounding the brand. I was okay with the eyeshadows, just eh with the blushes, impressed with the Lippie Stix, and I LOVE the Ultra Matte Lippies. I was pleasantly surprised that I found some gems with the brand and I have a wishlist for more in the future.

  4. I tried out the LA Girl Pro Conceal based on Shaaanxo raving about it and it has changed my life!

    1. Funny, I bought it solely based on reviews and it was BY FAR the worst consealer I have used in a long time! Didn't blend at all, pilled...tried a brush, finger, and BB application, all major FAILS. I ended up throwing it out after 4 tries. Not worth it. AWFUL. But, I am glad it worked out for you, I think I'm the odd one out.

  5. Mostly everything I buy is because of online hype haha. Most of the time the hype is completely understandable because the products are amazing, but other times not so much! These are some I can remember:

Becca x Jaclynn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector - Champagne Pop:

I absolutely LOVE this highlighter. It is beautiful and shimmery and everything I like in a highlighter. To be fair I've only tried two highlighters, this one and the Anastasia Beverly Hills So Hollywood, and I prefer Champagne pop by far (but often just use them together).

    Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette:

I have to say this was one of my first eye shadow palettes and I really liked them, but now that I have bought a few more (maybe more than a few haha), I rarely find myself using them. I have to say they're very pretty and pigmented, specially when using a wet brush, but can't compare to my Lorac and Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows.

MUFE Ultra Invisible HD Foundation Stick:

LOVE this foundation!! I usually use MAC or more recently started using the Born this way by Too Faced, but since I bought this MUFE stick I haven't touched the others (except for the Kat Von D Lock it when I want photoshopped skin haha). I have mixed skin, and have noticed however, that when I don't prime my face correctly or use setting powder it does get somewhat oily after a while on my T zone, which doesn't happen with the Born this way. But it's just so practical and easy to carry around that I still prefer it!

    Benefit They're Real Mascara:

    Best mascara ever! Just perfect.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer:

I just got this concealer this week, so I'm still testing it out. I have very dark circles under my eyes, and have struggled finding the perfect concealer ( I've used MUFE, Maybelline and MAC) but have never been completely satisfied or found something that covered EVERYTHING. This concealer is way more pigmented than any other I've tried. Which is fantastic because it get everything covered, but I don't know how I feel about the texture. It feels kind of heavy and when I put it on it's glossy but not greasy. I can't really explain it, but since I haven't tried it with proper priming and setting powder I have a feeling it will set better then. I'm loving it anyhow!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Contour Kit:

Well, it is a GREAT product! I love it, but I feel like it's not that unique or different from any other contour kit. I don't think it's a MUST if you're on a tight budget.

    ColourPOP Lipstick:

Meh... I mean for the price they're a great deal, but I have literally used mine ONCE, because they're really dry. Not "want to rip my lips out" kind of dry, they're very tolerable, but ompared to other great lipstick like Kat Von D, I never really pick out my colourPop lippie! But again, for the price you get very similar pigment to the more expensive ones.

I can't think of any more right now! Hope this is helpful for some :)

    1. ITA about Benefit's They're Real Mascara -- I think it's fantastic BUT I have the hardest time removing it and I've tried lots of different removers. What works for you? I need help, lol.

    2. I use Pond's C Cream, it takes it right off with no problem :)

  6. Hoola bronzer by Benefit. Lives up to the hype! It's the ultimate matte bronzer.

  7. Bought Loreal Telescopic because of CarliBybel and I love it even more than some of my more expensive mascaras. Milani Luminoso Blush because of NikkiTutorials and now it's one of my faves. Jeffree Star liquid lipstick for all the hype in general and I believe it really is the best liquid lipstick I've tried. So all in all I've had pretty good luck.

  8. I bought a Lipstick Queen lipstick based on a bunch of magazine Top something lists. It was awful. The lipstick was too soft and started to lose shape while I was applying it. I returned it after that. I also bought the new Burt's Bees lipsticks from Ulta since almost everyone online was raving about them. They were too light and not pigmented enough for my taste, so I returned them.

  9. When I first really started watching YouTube videos, L'Oréal True Match foundation and the Infallible eye shadows were all the rage. I hated the foundation. I couldn't find the right color, and it seemed to melt off my face. That was a huge fail! I continue to love the Infallible eyeshadows!

  10. after months & months of resisting , i finally gave in & bought 2 of the jeffree star liquid lippies (i'm royalty & blue velvet) from beautylish this past december .

when i got them , i was disappointed that they were not as vibrant as advertised on the photos shown on their instagram . i was expecting blue velvet to be a bright , cobalt blue , but it's more of a muted blue with alot of purple tones . i'm royalty wasn't as bright & a true grape purple .

the formula is pretty nice , but since it is so thin , you'd have to wear more than one layer & let the previous one dry first . if not , the product will move around & certain areas will be patchy when you try to build the color . also , the unique wand applicator needs some practice to get used to . there's a little divot near the tip which they claim helps hugs your lips better , but i found it quite tricky to get precise lines around the edges .

on a more positive note , i do like how they feel pretty much weightless on & don't suck the moisture out of my lips , but the fact that they weren't true to color makes me really apprehensive about purchasing more colors in the future .

    1. I didnt try the darker colors, I actually only got the the one called Celebrity Skin which is a nude. So I didn't get to experience the color issue. But yes the formula is very nice, nicest I've tried so far.

  12. Maybelline dream velvet foundation, due to a ton of youtubers trying. Thankfully I love it!

  13. Off of Jacklyn Hill's recommendation I bought the Sigma E25, e45, e65, and F80 and I am just AMAZED by how much of a difference that has made! I got an angled eyeliner from a kit I got on sale from Lorac and I thought that was good until I tried the E65. SERIOUSLY a game changer. ALL of them actually. They are WAY better than the brushes I've tried from Sephora, Urban Decay, and Lorac.

I also bought the beauty blender cause of all of the hype but have since worn it out and thrown it away. I don't miss it for blending (the sigma f80 does a fine job of that and it costs just as much and will last much much longer)but I will miss it because it was so great for blending out eyeshadow fall out. I dunno why but I perfer to do my face make up and then my eyeshadow and the BB was so handy to wipe away whatever mess I made and it would make it as if it never happened. I'll have to try the Real Techniques knock off and see if it is just as good

  14. Oh yes! MOST of what I purchase is based on lots of research and watching reviews on youtube from women I trust.

Some AMAZING successes: Lancome Teint Idole Foundation, Benefit Erase Paste, Milani lipsticks and lipliners, Loreal Setting Spray, Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, Physicians Formula Mascara (green tube), Philosophy renewed hope in a jar moisturizer, Sephora cream lipstain, Wet N Wild Comfort Zone eyeshadow palette, Tarte blushes, Maybelline Color Sensational Matte Lipsticks, Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor, Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer, Becca highlighters...

Some TOTAL duds: COUNTLESS "waterproof" eye liners for my waterline (Malley, Stila, MUFE, Urban Decay, NYC, Loreal, Rimmel, etc., etc.). Several drugstore foundations: Rimmel lasting finish (balled up on my face), Revlon Colorstay Whipped (never set), Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless (ACK!). The Balm Bahama Mama bronzer, Some of the Milani Amore Lip Creme colors were VERY patchy, Diorshow Extase Mascara (made my lashes fall not even 60 seconds after applying)...

  15. I also bought NYX eyebrow cake powder after seeing one make up artist use it on one of her looks. This artist predominantly uses high end brands so I was curious why she would suddenly thrown in a drug store product. Now I see why; it is AMAZING! For the longest time my boyfriend couldn't tell I filled in my eyebrows. He just thought I naturally had perfect ones and so he would tease me about it. Then I told him I fill them in and he was shocked! Haha for $6 it lasted me every day for like 2 years. Of course I use a different brush than the one it comes with but still, I have a hard time believing Anastasia is worth its price.

  16. I think the Morphe 35O was part hype but mostly because I LOVED the colors in the palette. There are some great ones but then there are some not so great ones. Colourpop was another but I think it was mostly my love to see new business thrive and survive. They offer great products at such an affordable price! They have me spoiled.

  17. Lots of stuff! The hyped "fail" I remember is Jack Black lip balms. Several bloggers mentioned how much they loved them, so I picked up a holiday set at Ulta. It's scented vaseline. I could have bought enough vaseline to swim in for what I paid for 3 tubes. I won't be repurchasing! But I also bought the Hard Candy glamoflauge concealer based on blog recommendations, and I love that. I also use my Milani blushes constantly.

  18. I tried Morphe brushes and palettes from all hype. The brushes are horrible crap that went in the garbage and the palettes were equally craptastic. I do not get the hype with Morphe. At all.

    1. Haha I thought I was the only one who thought the same. And I have brown skin, when applied with brush nothing comes of on my eyelids, it's fades even with good primer and not to mention the fall out, it's every where, affordable price but when you factoring in the clean up time and all the extra products needed for that clean up on my face it's not worth it for me.

  20. Emilynoel83 on the Wet n Wild palettes. Not the Fergi ones. She was correct. Tati and Emilynoel both loved Covergirl's The Super Sizer so I thought it was a sure thing. Nope, not for me. Sad face.

    2. I've used the Super Sizer mascara since it came out and it's HG status for me. I say give it a shot and see if you like it. It's kind of a wet mascara, so keep that in mind.

    3. I love the SuperSizer, too! You should try it first, but keep the receipt, if you think you may want to return it to the store.

  21. Most of what I buy is from hype online. Mostly here G. I have 50/50 results. The one huge fail is anything from ColourPop. The lippies suck any moisture right out of my lips and the shadows I can't get to blend out at all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gerard Cosmetics lipsticks. They were awful and drying! Everyone raves about them so I thought it was me. But lately I've been hearing more complaints after it came out that they wanted bloggers to sign contracts that they wouldn't say anything negative about them. Its hard to know who to trust! Except for G...I always trust your reviews, girl!

  23. I really don't get the hype for Morphe. I think the brushes are really cheap and of poor quality. There is such a varied quality of the eyeshadows that I never use them because it is way too time consuming and the result is below average.

The Covergirl truenaked roses was awful!

The maybelline anti-age concealer did not suit me. I am baffled that so many see it as their HG.

  24. nice to ask!! My makeup collection before getting into YouTube reviews and blogs fitted on a makeup bag. 1 foundation, 1 blush, 1 concealer, 1 foundation brush, lipstick, a few profusion mini palettes.

now.... I have an Ikea Alex drawers 1 drawer for lose and individual eye shadows, 1 for eyeliners, 2 for blushes and bronzer, 2 for eye shadow palettes, 1 for lipsticks... and so it goes...

most of the items are worth the hype! but a normal person like me don't need all of those but right now I need them all!! why???? why???> lol!

  25. Of course, I have! LOL! I actually picked up one of the new Hard Candy Velvet Mousse lip colors, after seeing you blog about it. I picked up the color Dahlia. It was $6.00 at my local Walmart. I was a bit nervous about it, but it worked out great for me. I put some on this morning, before work, and it keep going all the way through my lunch. I thought for sure i would not have anything on my lips when I looked in the mirror, but the lipstick was still going pretty strong, It faded a little bit around the inner lip area, but it was not too noticeable. I have to say I am impressed. Also, it not drying on my lips, which is important to me. I want to go back and pick up Tulip (red color), Wisteria (vibrant purple), and the nude shade. I'm happy with my purchase.

  26. Worst fails: Laura Mercier primer, and Hourglass highlighters.
I have reasonably good skin, and they both highlighted every last imperfection to make me look like an avocado.
    Winners:
The Balm Balm's away and La Roche-Posay's Effaclar BB Blur were both worth the hype.

  27. Nars lip pencils, they're nice but nothing to write home about.
