A (Very) Detailed Look Inside the First Play! by Sephora Beauty Box

You have may seen some sneak peeks of the first Play! by Sephora Beauty Box ($10 + free shipping) floating around social media, but today I have an in-depth look inside the box, courtesy of reader @nonamemary on Instagram! @nonamemary is lucky enough to live in a test market where this new monthly subscription service was available for sign-up (for the rest of us, be sure you're signed up HERE to be notified when it's available in your area), and she was kind enough to share lots of pics and info with us.

So let's take a look inside the very first Play! by Sephora beauty box!

01 September 2015 Play! by Sephora Beauty Box
(retail: $10 + free shipping for Play! by Sephora subscribers)

The first thing you see when you pop open the (very cute lipstick-themed) lid:

You receive a large booklet containing product info and other info (much more on this in a moment). @nonamemary mentioned that you can scan the images in the booklet with the Play! by Sephora app, and you will most likely be taken to the page on the Sephora site where you can purchase the full-size version.

@nonamemary also mentioned that the box (with the lipstick-themed lid) is on the thinner side. Just an FYI in case you like to reuse these types of boxes for storage.

All items in this box are deluxe samples.

Contents of 01 September 2015  Play by Sephora Beauty Box:
  • Marc Jacobs Highliner in Blacquer - 0.37g / .01oz
  • Glam Glow Supercleanse Daily Clearing Cleanser - 1oz / 30g
  • Sephora Rouge Infusion in #19 (Peony) - 2ml / .068 fl oz.
  • Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer - 1 fl oz./ 30ml
  • Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation Face Creme - .25 fl oz. / 7ml
  • Elizabeth and James Nirvana White Fragrance - .07 fl oz. / 2.0 ml

The Marc Jacobs Highliner in this box is the same size as the pencils in the Holiday 2014 The Skyliner Petite Highliner Set, if you're familiar with that set. I've heard that those pencils were a generous size, and I would agree considering that the full-size Highliners are 0.5 grams (for $25), while this deluxe sample is 0.37 grams. Overall, I would say that this box is an excellent value at just $10 (with free shipping).

Included in the booklet are tips about how to use all of the products (above), and also detailed product info about each item in the box (below):

BONUS POINTS:

Play! by Sephora Play Pass

Also in the booklet is a PLAY! Pass card which you can redeem/scan at a register in-store to earn an extra 50 Beauty Insider points with any purchase. @nonamemary metioned that it is not 100% clear if this means ANY purchase, or just any purchase of these specific PLAY! box items. @nonamemary also was left to assume that even though it says "scan," you don't get the card back; you probably surrender the card upon use. But that probably doesn't matter, considering that @nonamemary mentioned that they specifically note that this card can only be used by the PLAY! subscriber and redeeming multiple passes will still only result in 50 points. So you cannot use this card multiple times, and if your friend doesn't want to use his/her card and gives it to you to use, you're still only going to get 50 BI points total. So basically, don't even try. The card expires May 31, 2016, and it is not transferable and has no cash value.

I'm happy to see that you have so much time to use this card, considering that those Target beauty coupons we receive in our Target Beauty Boxes expire practially at the time of receipt!

  1. I suspect I'll be cancelling ipsy and getting this when it's available! I think this box looks FUN!

    2. I can't wait for the sub to come to my area! I will cancel Ipsy for this. That being said I already have several of samples that were in this box so I don't feel too bad about missing the first!!!!

    3. That's what I'm going to do too!

  2. Oooo nice first box. I hope they continue to be filled with that much awesomeness. Def. better value than a few other subscription boxes I've tried. Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. Considering I just ordered the .5 ounce size of Sheer Transformation for $14 this looks like an awesome deal to me!

  4. I was very impressed with my first Play box. The booklet includes different ideas of how to use the products. For instance, rubbing the remaining Bumble and bumble spray into your hands and cuticles or using the Ole Henriksen Creme as an intensive hand treatment in the winter months.

  5. I was quite impressed. I'm in Columbus. Shipping took a decent amount of time and it didn't ship until the 18th but that's not really a huge deal. I really liked the booklet. It goes through each item and the pictures are the deluxe sizes. It's pretty neat. I am definitely excited for the second box. This was definitely a hit for me. FYI they do charge tax on the subscription. For me in total it was $10.75.

  6. OMG I'm going to cry--October is all Asian Beauty!?!? So jelly of the people in the test markets!!!

  9. I put my name on the "waiting list". Wonder how long that will take.

  10. It looks nice, wish I could get the Marc Jacobs eyeliner for $2 (prorating each item). It's frustrating having to wait... I want this box now so I can cancel Ipsy which has turned into a disappointment.

    1. I also want to add that 50 pts translates to about $5, so that ain't too shabby! If used, it brings the cost of the box down to $5. However, it's only good in-store and I only ever shop Sephora online, so I'm out that little perk. :-)

  11. This is so much better than ipsy! :sobs:

  12. I've previously received all but one of these products from Sephora as samples or deluxe samples -- love the products themselves but kind of a bummer to feel like they were just clearing out the shelves. Hope next month brings some new-er things!

  13. The test market has expanded some for sure. Im in the New Orleans area and i recieved my first box this month!

    1. Oh wow, that's very good to know! I tried getting on the Wait List right away, but they said all spots were filled, so who knows... I hate when companies pull an Ipsy and claim there's a wait list. Come on, you have the products in stock, just let everyone with the cash buy one and quit trying to create this buzz about a supposed hard-to-get product.

    2. I've also seen some locations in Texas and Kentucky added. Random! I just received an invitation to an in store event for subscribers for next month. That will be interesting.

  14. I hope eventually they give out full size items. Sometimes they send u emails vouchers u can redeem for free inside jcp. The items u get look like the same size as shown on the pictures..perfume samples, we can get as many as we want inside sephora for free. .I do like the 50 points card though.. Thnx for keeping us update on this beauty box.

  15. Hmmm I may look into this one since I just cancelled Birchbox and never had a good experience with Ipsy. The only one I have now is Julep which lately has had a nice mix of nail stuff and makeup, for my needs anyway.

  16. Test market must have expanded. I just go an email that I could sign up for October. I went ahead and signed up. I'm pretty excited about it!

In other news, I cancelled Birchbox and Ipsy...

  17. I just got mine too (Boston area). I'm not renewing Ipsy which ends soon, and keeping this one.

  18. There are A LOT of products in that box for $10 shipped! Wow! BUT...I wish the majority of the items were color cosmetics. My skin is extremely sensitive/highly reactive so I never use random skin care and hair care samples. There are only 2 color cosmetic items in the box so this is not the box for me.

I've been wanting to subscribe to a cosmetics box for a long time but I can't seem to find one that is all color cosmetics (mini lipsticks, eye shadow samples, blush samples, mini eyeliners/lipliners, mini mascaras, etc.). If they came out with a box called Sephora COLOR! (or something like that, lol) that was ALL COLOR COSMETICS I'd sign up immediately!

I'm still dreaming of an all-mini-lipstick-box... *mini lipstick obsession* XD

  19. I signed up for the waiting list. I hope this comes to PA soon! I'm probably going to cancel Ipsy by then

  20. I just got an email inv for this (which I signed up for ASAP, as a matter of course!), and I live just outside of Boston. Not sure if this means they expended the range (geography-wise) of the test market or if they just expended the overall quantity of the available subscriptions. Only ever had experience with the Glam bag before it became ipsy, but that got canceled right quick since it just wasn't for me. Really looking forward to this though!

One thing that on one has bought up though. That fragrance sample in this month's box is not what I would consider deluxe size at all. I always considered these as regular samples that you can get from any fragrance counter and online order from pretty much everywhere. That feels like a ripe-off right there since the service did promise 6 deluxe samples. Hopefully this gets changed in the future.

  21. Looks like a fantastic value for $10! I've been avoiding Sephora for a while, but I'll probably have to suscribe when it launches nationally.

  22. Thank you! This is news to me, and I'm so excited! I don't know how they can keep the price so low for what you're getting. I already signed up for the list, I think it gives you a fair try at high end products.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The only downside is everyone gets the same products.

    1. Actually, I think that's better. Ipsy's fifty different choices causes a lot of bag envy, lol....

  24. I'm in Columbus OH and got email late this week I could sign up. It didn't seem to take the first time so I've tried again and seem to have a confirmation number and it's in my order history now.

I had cancelled Ipsy awhile back just because it had been exactly two years, so I have two years worth of bags and products, which I was using less and less...

  25. Wow I would be really upset if I paid for this. I have some of these already of from their 100 & 500 pt perks. Like someone else said, they are just clearing out the free sample shelves. Surprise surprise, Sephora is ripping off their most loyal customers once again.
