The Lipstick League - Week of 6.29.15

The Lipstick League Question of the Week

What was your first “signature scent’? Do you still wear it?

G's answer: The first perfume that I can really recall being a signature scent was Anais Anais by Cacharel, which I wore constantly in junior high (fun fact: Anais Anais was actually Cacharel's first fragrance and it debuted in 1978). I wore it every day for a long period of time and then I completely burned myself out on it (if I remember correctly, I moved on to Giorgio Beverly Hills or Liz Claiborne in the yellow triangle bottle, if anyone remembers those!). But it was only until very recently that could I come to truly appreciate Anais Anais again. In fact, I purchased a bottle several months ago when I saw it at Ross, and I fell back in love with it all over again! I'd say I wear it probably once every two weeks now. PS: I've heard people say that Cacharel reformulated Anais Anais and that it doesn't smell like the original anymore, but I swear that the new bottle I purchased at Ross smells exactly how I remember it.

  1. I can't remember the name of my first signature scent.. but I'd love to know. It was a gift, and was pretty expensive. One of the department store brands (I'm leaning towards lancome), the name was french (eau de "somthing), was in a clear tall rectangular bottle with a blue square cap. Would have been about 1989 when it was purchased.

    1. Hum...I'm trying so hard to pin this down! The only bottles that I can remember from that period that were tall and rectangular were by Elizabeth Arden, but no blue caps. Lancome Magie Noir was super popular back then, but the bottle had a black lid. Oh gosh, maybe someone else can help us out! Lol.

    2. I've been digging on google for a while now.. no luck. It was square on the bottom.. like a square column.. and the top was the same size as the bottle. So crazy because I can picture it in my mind, but it's like it didn't exist lol.

    3. Dulce and gabbana light blue?

  2. I have two that are dear to my heart! My first was Victoria ' s Secret Vanilla Lace. My husband first mentioned how much he loves vanilla - based scents on me when we were dating, when I was wearing this semi-regularly (but of course upped its usage when he said he liked it, lol)... it's still a great layering vanilla on me and I wear the body mist still a couple times a month. I just don't really wear the lotion anymore (trying to use up my 5000 bath and body works lotions) but miss having it in my rotation too!

Now, my current signature is Dior Addict edp! Yet another that I discovered when I was first dating my husband. He gave me the gift set (i wish they still had the sets in this scent for the holidays) for my birthday, and it was my first "grown up girl" perfume ;) I remember feeling so luxurious when I first sprayed it!! I still wear my Addict almost daily! It just makes me happy!

    1. Oh my gosh, I know EXACTLY what you mean about upping the usage when he said he like it! Lol. When Mr G and I first started dating, he told me he loved jasmine, so out came all my jasmine perfumes! He went crazy every time I wore them so guess what I wore for like a year straight? Lol. Now I only bust out my jasmine perfumes on special occasions, but he still goes crazy when I do. :)

    1. Omg, my mom wore nothing but Sweet Honesty when I was a little girl! It is the most comforting scent in the world to me. In fact I just ordered a bottle from Avon the other day because I want to smell it again! My mom wears Tresor almost exclusively these days, but I can't wait to give her this bottle and see if she still likes it. When was the last time you smelled it? :)

  4. My first signature scent was Philosophy's Falling In Love. I still wear it, just not as often. But, when I do my fiancé who I've been with for 9 years(dating and engaged) gets scent memories and tells me I smell nice. So that's what's special and what I like about it now. :)

    1. Aaaah, I know exactly what you mean! That's what happens when my boyfriend smells jasmine on me (see my story above). So nice that you have a special scent that takes you both back like that. :)

  5. My first signature scent was Red Door by Elizabeth Arden. I loved that so much. I have a tiny bottle now and I sniff it occasionally just to bring back memories. Vanilla Fields, EA's Sunflowers, and Britney Spears' Curious have all hit signature level over the years. Oh, I almost forgot Tabu. My mom told me a story about how she and my dad were out to dinner (I think they were dating at the time) and the waitress had on a perfume that she liked. Mom was too shy to ask her what it was! Dad wasn't shy at all so he asked and it was Tabu. So she bought a bottle of it. When I worked in a cosmetics department, I remembered this story and tried Tabu for myself and loved it. A couple years ago I bought tiny bottles of it for Mom and me. It reminds me of family, Autumn, and cozy sweaters.

I grew up with Avon fragrances, too: Sweet Honesty, Pearls and Lace, etc.

Love's Baby Soft was an important fragrance milestone in my life.

    1. Yes! Love's Baby Soft and EA Sunflowers were definitely in rotation for me back in the day. I actually revisited Tabu and reviewed it here on the blog several years ago...I still love that root beer note. :)

  6. Curve Baby Curve! I felt so cool wearing it. The scent hasn't changed, but I don't think I can go backwards.

    1. Oh yes, Curve!!! Many memories come flooding back with that one! ;)

  7. My first fragrances: Love's Baby Soft and Love's Fresh Lemon (in elementary school). High school fragrances: Anais, Anais, Pavlova, Cristalle, by Chanel. I continued with those into college, until I discovered Paris by YSL, which I loved until I started dating my now husband, who disliked it. early 20s: Eternity, Angel and Montana by Claude Montana. Now: all Tocca fragrances, anything with lemon or bergamot, the occasional vanilla.

    1. Oh Pam, PAVLOVA!!! Yes!! My goodness I haven't thought about that perfume in years! I LOVED that one and I can still see the pink roses on the black box in my head as I write this. :)

Since you wore Pavlova, I have to ask: Did you also love Paloma Picasso and/or Niki de Saint Phalle? :)

And I too had a love affair with YSL Paris... memories!

    1. Aaaah, one of my best friends wore nothing but this for a long time. Such fun memories! :)

  9. Mine was Dior's Poison. I am really giving away my age!! I scraped together every cent I had when I was in college to buy the beautiful purple bottle and loved every drop of that stuff. Does not smell anywhere near the same today.

    1. Yessss!!! I was obsessed with this back in the day and remember freaking out when my dad gave it to me for Christmas. WHY did they change it??? I sniffed it recently and you're absolutely right. It is nothing like its former self. So sad!

Do you remember the original Lauren by Ralph Lauren in the square maroon bottle? I would kill to smell that again!

  10. I found my signature scent very early in life, in the middle of high school -- Revlon's Jontue. That was in 1975 and I've worn it since. Yep, 40 years! I've met people (OK, old boyfriends) I haven't seen in decades, and after we hug each other they say, "Wow, you still smell the same; I loved that perfume!" If Revlon ever quits making it, I'll stock up on bottles.

  11. I remember being into Avon's Odyssey, Tasha and Topaze as a kid, when my mom sold Avon for a spell and I liked the perfume samples.
Then later I loved Love's Baby Soft (I still do, in fact) and The Body Shop's White Musk in the mid-1990s. I still have a Baby Soft I found on clearance at Rite Aid, and I have a little White Musk in a travel size spritzer, but the latter is too powdery for me on some days. My mom, being German, always loved 4711, and I still love that. I could buy that buy the gallon, I love it so much, especially in summer, with the citrus and jasmine in there.

    1. Oh gosh, White Musk and Dewberry were my jam for a period of time in the 90s!! And yes, I still love 4711 as well! :)

    2. Tasha is still one of my all time faves. I'm almost finished with a bottle I've been nursing for years and years. I wish Avon would bring it back.

  12. My signature scent is Ralph Lauren's Hot... It was in a magazine and I fell in love with it. Now I buy it for ridiculous amounts on Ebay, Poshmark and Mercari. Its the only perfume I have ever loved. I buy roller balls of other scents but never finish them. When my kids smell "Hot" they say they instantly think of me.

  13. I wore that Liz Claiborne yellow triangle bottle for years in junior high. Wow, I hadn't realized it was so long ago! Memories and scents go hand-in-hand!

    1. Yay!!! Oh I'm so happy to hear you remember (and wore!) that one too! :) I've heard they reformulated ("updated") the fragrance and that it's not what it used to be, so I haven't even tried to revisit it, have you? :(

    2. It is odd how scents and memories are so closely related. If I smell Chanel No. 5, I start to cry, because my late mother always wore it.

    3. I haven't tried in a long time, but I may have an old bottle of it around here, somewhere! Lol.

  14. L'Air du Temps Parfum - I have worn this perfume for decades and have always loved it. However, the last bottle I bought and am currently using is definitely not the same. It still has the flowery scent but that darker tone that comes out after it sits on your skin a while is gone. And that was what I loved most about it.
I haunt perfume counters trying out perfumes and scents. I have tried and tried to find one I like as much as I did the L'Air du Temps, but, so far, no success. The only other scent I wear is C. O. Bigelow Lemon No. 1999 - I love the lemon scent, just like a fresh squeezed lemon.

  15. Calvin Klein Obsession. Haven't smelled it in years, but I know if I did it would take me straight back to the 80s! My two best friends at that time wore Lauren in the burgundy bottle and Anais Anais, so thinking about those really takes me back as well. Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane. ;)

  16. Let's see, Jean Nate was my jam lol. Also Curve for Men (don't judge me lol it smelled better to me than the women's) Lucky You and Bora Bora.

  17. It's amazing how smells send you back.
My mom's signature fragrance is Halston. My signature was Lucky You but people asked me what it was and I stupidly told them then everyone was wearing it so I needed a new signature which is Kenneth Cole Reaction. They discontinued for like 2 years and have now brought it back. My first perfume was electric youth....the Debbie Gibson one. Remember that one? I wish I still had that bottle it was so pretty.

  18. There have been many over the years - Jovan Musk, Love's Baby Soft, Charlie and Liz Claiborne (like you), and now for a while, Cashmere Mist.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Easy... "Pumpkin Spice" body mist by Bodycology is undeniably my first and favorite signature scent! I went a little crazy after my first bottle and bought FOUR MORE on clearance... What can I say? It's wonderful! =D
