Review: Nyx Prismatic Shadow in Punk Heart

Updated 2/21/15 with additional comparisons.

So you know I had to do it. The minute I posted about the new Nyx products on the Ulta site (back at the end of January), I placed an order. I only purchased one of the new Prismatic Shadows, but I purchased a boatload of other new Nyx products to review for you (I already reviewed the new Nyx Tres Jolie Gel Liner Pencil HERE if you missed it). I just wasn't sure how I was going to like these shadows, so that's why I just bought one. You know...baby steps.

So let's take a closer look, shall we?

Nyx Prismatic Shadow in Punk Heart
(retail: $6, 0.043 oz)

Keep reading for my full review...

There are twelve shades in the Prismatic Shadow range. You can view/purchase all twelve shades on the Nyx site HERE, and these are also available for purchase on the Ulta site HERE. I believe these shadows are also starting to pop up in-store at Ulta right now as well.

These shadows come fully safety-sealed (yay!) and instead of the usual all-black packaging, the lid on these pots is silver:

You can see that a bit better in this photo:

And we have the signature Nyx bow on the latch:

It's just so cute, isn't it?

Made in Taiwan

If you look really closely at the surface of this shadow, you can see teeny tiny bits of iridescent micro-glitter. But it turns out that this doesn't read so much as glitter on the eye as it does reflective sparkle. And even then, this is not really what I'd call a "sparkly shadow." It's a metallic shadow with teeny tiny bits of sparkle, but it doesn't look like a glitterbomb on the eye.

Looking at my swatches above (which I did using just ONE swipe of color for each swatch), the pigmentation of this shadow is very impressive. We're talking ridiculously impressive. I mean, Urban Decay, MAC, LORAC impressive. The only difference between these two swatches is that the color seems a bit more intense over primer. But you most certainly do NOT have to wear primer with this shadow. In fact, you might prefer to skip it if you're going for a most subtle look. But more on that in a moment.

When I first opened my Ulta package and saw Punk Heart in the pan, I immediately thought, "MAC Cranberry dupe?"

Um, that would be a BIG NOPE:

I can't believe how incredibly off I was about that one. Ha! Anyway, that caused me to pull out some of my other higher-end shadows, and I quickly realized that I currently own nothing like Punk Heart when it comes to higher-end shadows. I did, however, want to show you some other shadows next to Punk Heart, just to give you some perspective:

Same swatches in slightly dimmer lighting:

As you can see, UD Coax is pinker, LORAC Merlot is warmer, and UD Voodoo is bluer. Again, I wasn't really trying to find a dupe--I just wanted to give you a basis for comparison.

So let me cut right to the chase here. Punk Heart is amazing. The pigmentation is exceptional, both with and without primer, the texture is smooth and buttery (almost creamy, although it's NOT a cream or cream-powder hybrid--it's a super buttery powder). I get zero fallout in the pan when I'm picking up color with my brush (ZERO, I tell you), and this shadow applies like a dream. No patchiness and no difficulty with blending out or smoking out this shadow at all (by the way, it looks stunning when blended out as liner on the lower lash line). Staying power is also exceptional. I can go all day and into the night when I wear this over primer, and even without primer I can get a solid 6-7 hours before I see some light fading/creasing.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, there is very, very fine micro-glitter in this shadow but it does not really translate as glitter on the eye. It appears more like a very fine sparkle. which gives the overall finish a reflective quality.

I don't know if all of the shadows in this range are this incredible, but I certainly intend to find out. I honestly can't remember the last drugstore powder eyeshadow that impressed me like this one. Punk Heart ABSOLUTELY feels like a MAC, Urban Decay or LORAC eyeshadow, and if you were to take it out of the pot and tell me that it was a MAC shadow, I would completely believe you, without question.

UPDATE:

After I originally published this review, I received some reader requests for additional comparisons. Since I own two of the shades that were requested, I've included swatches above. As you can see, Urban Decay Last Call is much warmer and redder than Punk Heart, and Too Faced Candied Violet is cooler and more blue (it's actually a completely different finish; it's more of a blacked purple matte with lots of pink glitter). Nyx Punk Heart is more of a plummy-purple. I hope that helps!

FINAL VERDICT: If you like this color and you like metallic finish eyeshadows, Punk Heart is a must-have. Honestly, you will feel like you're wearing a higher-end shadow when you apply this. For all of the reasons I stated above, I give this eyeshadow my highest recommendation.

Do you own any of the new Nyx Prismatic Shadows? If so, I would absolutely love to know which shades you own, and how they've been working for you!

  1. I did a similar review on my blog a few weeks ago. In my opinion you NEEd primer, these shadows rub away really easily. However, they are amazingly pigmented and priced right!

    1. Thank you so much for the different perspective!! I have worn this shadow three times without primer (the rest of my testing was over primer) and it stayed pretty true for the entire day on me without primer (I did blend it out a lot for a more subtle look though).

Could this possibly be the ONE instance where my oily lids worked in my favor?? I'm thinking that maybe the natural oils from my skin actually HELPED to keep it in place without primer. If that's what's going on, that would be a dream! Lol!!

  2. It reminds me of MAC's Star Violet!

    1. You're so welcome, Miranda. It really is stunning.

When you get it, could you please let me know what kind of wear time you get without primer? I'm so curious if I'm an anomaly here! Lol! (see my comment above.) thank you!! :)

  4. Hi, G.

Could you do one more comparison? I've been on the fence about buying Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette (mainly because of price, plus it didn't pass my "do I really NEED it" test). I really think the Candied Violet (is that the name of the purple shade?) is gorgeous in the pictures I've seen. How does Punk Heart compare to Candied Violet?

    1. No problem! I was actually going to include a swatch of that too, but it's similar to UD Voodoo and I already had that swatched, so I skipped it. Candied Violet is much bluer than Punk Heart. Hope that helps! :)

    2. Thank you so much! It sounds like Punk Heart might be what I want! Might have to order online since no retailers near me carry Nyx.

  5. I saw a review that compared these eyeshadows to the new makeup geek foiled eyeshadow - Do you have any of those or plan on getting any for comparison?
    P.S. I love your blog :)

  6. I ordered three of them that day in January (Bedroom Eyes, Girl Talk, and Tin) and a couple weeks later I picked up Frostbite and Golden Peach at Ulta... I. LOVE. THEM!!!!! I also swatched Mermaid and Blue Jeans while I was at Ulta, and they are definitely next! LOVE these eyeshadows :)

  8. I too bought just one of the new Nyx Prismatic shadows to see how I liked it before committing to any more. Got Golden Peach which I cannot recommend highly enough. I LOVE it! It's a color that will go with browns and other neutrals, purples, you name it.

Nyx has become my favorite budget brand but their eye shadows are so hit or miss. All their singles are fantastic but I've been so disappointed with every one of their palettes I've tried. No pigmentation in those.

One caveat on the Prismatic shadows -- you cannot de-pot them into a palette because there is no metal pan under the actual shadow. Found this out the hard way!

    1. Golden Peach looks like a dupe for Too Faced Paper Roses… and if so, I will definitely NEED that one. I love Paper Roses soooo much!!!

    2. Thanks for that info.. I was totally planning to depot. I may not buy more now even though they are gorgeous.. have to see if I can come up with another storage option (they could wind up in a plastic organizer like my Colorpops).

  9. I saw these at ULTA last weekend, and I ALMOST bought one but talked myself out of it on account of the fact I have way too many eyeshadows. They were already looking pretty picked over. I'm still tempted to buy some...

  10. Gorgeous color. Sadly I can't wear pinks/purples because of a cochineal/carmine allergy. Oh well.

  11. Picked up two yesterday. Gorgeous and so creamy. I've actually been a bit disappointed with the MUG foileds, they look beautiful in a swatch but are kind of hard to get on the eyes and are not nearly as metallic as I thought. Hoping these work out better. They are a bit underwhelming in the pan, you don't see that gorgeous shine until you spread them out.

  12. This is stunning. Purples are great for green eyes, so I may have to check this one out. I just bought NYX "Love in Rio: Bikini Bottom" three-shadow palette and I love it. Perfect brown neutrals. I find these nicely pigmented.

  14. Oh my god I need this in my life. Do you have UD Last Call to compare it to?

    1. I do! Last Call is pinker and warmer, while Punk Heart is more purple and a bit cooler-toned. :)

    2. Thanks for the update! I DEFINITELY need this.

  15. This looks great. I'm going to check this shade out as well as the other shades next time I'm at Ulta. Nyx has the best stuff coming out this year. They are fast becoming a favorite brand of mine.

  16. I really like the quality of the eyeshadows but I hate how easily they shatter. I bought 5 of them and that day 3 of them shattered. A lot of people told me they had the same problem. I also purchased some of the new HD blushes and one of them shattered on me as well. I still love them tho!

  17. NYX usually doesn't disappoint when it comes to eyeshadows. This one looks beautiful and the pigmentation is impressive. I'm curious to try one of these soon

  18. With those comparison swatches, you have created an amazing palette! It will be fun to have more pics like that...maybe staying within drugstore/value brands? As always, you did an amazing job, G! Thank you!

  19. After reading this post, I placed my first ever NYX order from the website and got Punk Heart and 8 friends to keep it company on the trip! :-D

  20. You need to get Mermaid it's the most beautiful Metallic Mint Green ever! I just ordered a few more shades off of NYX's website anxiously awaiting their arrival!

  21. I bought 4 of the NYX prismatic shadows, I also have 6 of the Makeup Geek shadows. I love both formulas! I think MUG color options were more useable (for me) but NYX made some really unique colors like peach & mermaid. I am scared to de-pot the NYX shadows!!! MUG had issues with these shadows breaking. One of my NYX shadows was shattered when I opened the box. So I know these shadows are fragile. If anyone successfully de-pots these, I'd love to know about it!!!

  22. WOW! Punk Heart is seriously impressive. I definitely want to get it and some of the other shades in the range! :D I love that they offer free shipping at $25 too - that's a huge deal to me. Yay Nyx! <333
